Helicopter electricity network<br />

surveys<br />

From June to August <strong>2022</strong>,wewillbecarrying<br />

out aerial network surveys across theMainPower<br />

network.This willallow us to monitor thecondition<br />

of our assets, identify potentialissues and resolve<br />

them before they cause harm or outages.<br />

We’reconscious thathelicoptersmight disturb<br />

animals or planned events. If you have concerns<br />

Surveys willbegin in theKaikōura area and will<br />

move down thenetwork until completion in mid-<br />

August (weather permitting).<br />

This work willbecompleted using equipment<br />

mounted to ahelicopter flying continuously at a<br />

moderate pace, approximately 270 metres above<br />

power lines.<br />

EV ChargerFaults<br />

We’venoticed agradual increase in blown fuses<br />

from EV charger installationsatresidential<br />

properties.<br />

installing the equipment checks that your home has<br />

sufficient capacityfor the chargerand your home’s<br />

average consumption so that overloadingwillnot<br />

occur.<br />

Astandard residential EV charger can draw 25 Amps<br />

per phase, whereas most household fuses are 32<br />

Amps –leaving littlecapacityfor the house itself. If<br />

someone at the property turns on atoaster,kettle,<br />

heat pump, or oven at thesametime as the charger,<br />

they caneasily blow afuse.<br />

MainPower is attending moreand more of these<br />

instances,atacost to thecustomer.Inaddition,<br />

customersare also payinganelectriciantoreturn<br />

and rebalance thehouse acrossthe 3phases to<br />

prevent blowing fuses in the future.<br />
