Library Services Director
A Note from the Director
It’s hard to believe another summer is almost
over. In August, local students will return to
classrooms, and life will pick up its pace again.
For the libraries, August serves as a big break
between our busiest time of year and the return
of regular school-year programming.
June 2022 was the busiest month at Burbank’s
three libraries since before the pandemic in
terms of onsite visits, with almost 40,000 people coming into the building.
With a packed set of summer programs for all ages, plus extra incentives
to read as part of the Summer Reading Program, that makes sense. July 1
also marked one year since we eliminated Library fines for overdue
materials, which continues our efforts to remove barriers and engage
our entire community in the Library.
Summer programs, eBooks and many other services are supported by
the Friends of the Burbank Public Library, who were also able to hold a
successful book sale this summer and have both of their used bookstores
at the Central and Buena Vista branches open. Without the Friends, the
Library could only offer a fraction of the great services it does. Last year
and this year, that has included matching funds for the Lunch at the
Library grant from the California State Library, through which hundreds
of books are distributed to Burbank Unified School District students who
qualify for free school meals. You can learn more or join the Friends at
burbanklibrary.org/friends.
The success of the Library and our work depends on this network of
partners and influences – our users, our community organizations, our
City and certainly our staff. A recent survey conducted by the City of
Burbank showed 9 out of 10 Burbank residents consider it to be a good or
excellent place to live, with libraries high on the list of services that make
them feel that way. We are happy to do our part to contribute and are
always open to ideas for improvement.
