THE STATE OF PLAY…
The big news in the build up
to the new campaign was the
birth of the Premier League.
The breakaway competition
included a new broadcasting
deal with Sky, which included
live games, whilst the BBC would
show highlights. Meanwhile,
transfer fees were on the rise
with Alan Shearer moving from
Southampton to Blackburn for
a new British record of £3.5m.
Other big money moves saw
Dean Saunders join Aston Villa
from Liverpool, John Jensen
move from Brondby to Arsenal,
David Rocastle from Arsenal
to Leeds whilst Dion Dublin
swapped life at Cambridge for
Manchester United.
HEADLINE ACT…
It is fair to say Mike Walker’s Norwich were a team which didn’t stand out from the
crowd at the start of the campaign, but they received many an admiring glance after
the opening weekend. The Canaries were 2-0 down at half-time at Highbury after
goals from Steve Bould and Kevin Campbell had Arsenal in control. Norwich though
produced a stunning fightback when goals from Mark Robins (2), David Phillips and
Ruel Fox bagged Walker’s side an eye-catching 4-2 win against a side who had won
the league just two years before.
