It’s not often a manager can
sign a player who has already
proved he can be a star man
in his team, but that was certainly the
story with the deal that took striker
Benik Afobe from Stoke to Millwall
last summer.
This one-time Arsenal graduate
caught the eye during a loan spell with
Millwall last season, inspiring Lions
manager Gary Rowett to make a bid
to seal his services on a permanent
basis last month.
The move was looking unlikely
when Afobe went for a medical and
the chance to play in the Champions
League at Club Brugge, but he turned
down a three-year contract in Belgium
and returned to London.
“It’s great to be back. I’m absolutely
delighted,” said Afobe. “The welcome
I’ve had from the lads, from fans
on social media, the feeling is
mutual. I’m happy to be back.
“It’s been a busy summer for
me, the phone has been ringing.
There have been a few
clubs here and there
speaking to my family,
my agent, myself but at
the end of the day, I’m
coming back to Millwall
Football Club where
I feel there is a bit of
unfinished business.

“I’ve spoken to the manager
the whole summer, spoken to my
teammates and the love I’ve been
getting here, as a footballer, that’s all
you want and all you need. For me to
go to the next level, this is the place
for me. It’s everything, every person
here has been great, and I feel like
I’ve got a lot of repaying with lots of
goals this season.”
Afobe’s move to Millwall confirmed
he has found his home for his talents,
and he is convinced the Lions can
enjoy a successful season.
“It was hard for me before I came
to this club,” he added. “I’d come
from Turkey (loan spell at
Trabzonspor) where I’d hardly
played at all and I was trying
to get my rhythm back,
trying to understand my
teammates and my teammates
understand me. But we
got there in the end.
“I feel like if
our away form
improves this
season, we’ve got
a good chance
and I’m delighted
to be back here.”
