Having endured a
frustrating
pre-season nursing
a thigh problem, Tommy
Doyle is closing in on a
return to full training with
the Blades and admits he’ll
be looking to make up for
lost time when fully fit.
The England U21
international became Paul
Heckingbottom’s first
signing of the summer in
early July, but unfortunately
has yet to kick a ball in
anger in a red and white
striped shirt.
The highly regarded
midfielder joined City at
the age of just eight and
has progressed through
the ranks at the Etihad
Stadium, making his senior
debut for Pep Guardiola’s
men in the EFL Cup in
October 2019.
Capped by England at
every youth level from
U16 through to the U21s,
Tommy has furthered his
development with two loan
stints away from City, in
Germany with Hamburger
SV and last season in the
Championship with Cardiff
PLAYER FOCUS
City for the second half of
the campaign. In Wales,
Doyle impressed scoring
twice in 17 league starts for
the Bluebirds.
Reflecting on completing
the switch across the
Pennines, Tommy
remarked: “I’m excited to
join the Blades and now
I just want to get out there
as quickly as possible and
show the fans what I’m
about.
“It has been a frustrating
few weeks, not been
able to play in any of the
friendlies and having to do
my rehabilitation away from
the main group has been
tough, but hopefully the
injury is behind me now.”
Having played at S2 as
recently as April, Tommy is
looking forward to having
the crowd at his back
rather than on it, as he
recalls his experience from
last term.
He concluded: “I got the
phone call that Sheffield
United was interested and
it is hard to say no to a club
like this.
“I played for Cardiff at
Bramall Lane last season,
and it wasn’t easy. It was a
tough day that I remember
well, the fans and stadium
were brilliant and I’m
looking forward to playing
there again.”
