I-71 overpass
study approved
By Andrea Cordle
Twenty-four hours before hundreds of
recent and not-so-recent Grove City
High School graduates descended upon
the city’s ball diamonds to participate in
the oft-billed “world’s largest alumni
softball tournament,” they took to the
streets of the historic Town Center for
the annual Homecoming Celebration to
gather, reminisce, and generally have a
good time in each other’s company.
Helping to keep the lively festivities even
more lively was the band Naked Karate
Girls, who describe themselves as a
“Las Vegas-style dance and rock show
band.” From 7 to 9:30 p.m., they charmed
the crowd with their multi-generation set
list of bops and got quite a few to create
their own makeshift dance center near
City Hall. Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage said
that he was initially scared to have them
perform during the celebration because
of their band name, but admitted they
were the right quartet for the night.
“They have done a terrific job,” he said.
Shown here pumping up the crowd is
lead singer “TeePee” and guitarist
“Mustang.” The band, who only use their
stage names during performances, hail
from Cincinnati.
The Homecoming Celebration wasn’t
just for alumni of GCHS. Below, Ryan
Jones of West Virginia dances the night
away. Jones said while he has been living
in the area for several years, this
year was the first time he has attended
the annual celebration. “I’m having a
great time,” he said during a brief pause
in his dancing.
Children are delighted as Naked Karate Girls drummer “Lt. Jack Woo” uses his toilet
paper thrower during a musical number.
The city of Grove City will review
options for an Interstate 71 overpass.
Council acted at the Aug. 1 meeting to
appropriate $212,100 and enter into an
agreement with the engineering firm
EMH&T for an alignment and feasibility
study for an I-71 overpass.
This overpass project was part of the
City plans for sidewalk repairs
By Andrea Cordle
Grove City Editor
The city of Grove City is preparing to fix
sidewalks.
At a recent meeting, city council
approved a resolution to authorize the
city’s consulting engineer to prepare plans,
specifications, and cost estimates for the
construction and repair of sidewalks on
Haughn Road, Angela Drive, Acorn Court,
Grant Avenue, Park Street, Midland
Street, Curtis Avenue, Lincoln Avenue,
Elm Street, Grove City Road, and Front
Street.
“This is the first step in the annual sidewalk
program,” said Cindi Fitzpatrick,
director of public service for the city of
Grove City. “This allows the city to hire a
third-party consulting engineer to evaluate
the sidewalks in this area.”
Sidewalk repair is commonly the
responsibility of the homeowner. However,
the city is implementing a grant program
Food Truck Festival
and Shop Hop
that will assist homeowners by paying up
to 50 percent of costs for the installation or
improvement of sidewalks. According to
the legislation, the remaining portion of
the cost not covered by the grant program
can be financed, interest free, over a 20-
year term.
Fitzpatrick said once engineers have
completed their evaluations of the listed
sidewalks, they would prepare a cost estimate.
That estimate would then be brought
back before council for final approval.
Grove City resident Roger Burket
addressed council on the legislation and
asked who makes the decision about which
sidewalks will be repaired.
“There are sidewalks in other areas that
also need to be addressed,” said Burket.
He said the sidewalks near the corner of
Front Street and Cleveland Avenue need
attention.
“I guess those are not included in this
year’s round,” said the resident. “Maybe it
should be.”
19 from 4 to 9 p.m. Patrons can enjoy an
evening strolling and shopping in the
2050 is a blueprint to update the city’s
plans and policy to proactively shape
where and how the city grows. It includes
recommendations for land use, thoroughfare,
and economic development.
“The land use study area names a plan
to link the east side of 71 to the western
part of the city,” said Grove City Mayor
Richard “Ike” Stage. “This is an evolution
that has been going on for quite a while.”
The goal is to have access over
Interstate 71 in the southern part of the
city. The 2050 community plan recommends
an overpass at Holton Road.
According to the document, this would
allow a new frontage road to be developed
on the west side of the interstate, like
North Meadows Drive on the east side of
71. It would open land for development. An
additional point of connectivity across the
highway would also decrease the traffic on
existing roadways.
The study would determine if a connection
to Holton Road is possible. According
to city legislation, the feasibility of the proposed
overpass must be studied in terms of
roadway alignment, bridge configuration,
hydraulic modeling along with environmental
and utility reviews. It must also be
coordinated with the Ohio Department of
Transportation.
One of the other challenges of the proposal
is going into an area already partially
developed with both residential and
non-residential development.
According to Stage, city officials have
already met with Mount Carmel and most
of the other landowners who would be
impacted by this project.
“The meeting with Mount Carmel was
quite productive because they had some
good suggestions,” said Stage.
The mayor said city officials have also
met with representatives from the
Buckeye Ranch and the Solid Waste
Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO).
“We had pretty good feedback from
them,” said Stage.
The city plans to apply for various funding
sources to offset the initial capital cost
for the improvements, including but not
exclusive to, federal attributable funds
through the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning
Commission and roadwork development
funds.
Stage said the city needs to look into
funding from the federal infrastructure
bill.
“We need to make sure we are queued
up into the system if it makes sense to do
so,” said Stage. “I believe if you don’t have
the attributable funds queued up, your
chance of getting infrastructure dollars is
pretty much eliminated.”
Sharon Downs (nee Thomas) has always
been a fixture in the city of Grove City.
When she was a child, she could often be
found riding her bicycle up and down the
streets, waving hello to everyone who
would pass her by.
When she was a teenager, she could
often be found driving her car throughout
the city’s downtown, waving hello or goodbye
to the passersby in her much-loved silver
gray 1957 Chevy convertible with the
sharp red interior and the glasspack muffler.
Admittedly, she put many miles on
the odometer during this time because she
wanted to give the people in her sparsely
populated hometown something beautiful
to look at.
“My car was so hot,” said Downs with a
big laugh. “I was so proud of it because I
had spent years saving up by working at
my parent’s place (Rush N Opal’s Party
House) to be able to afford that car so of
course I wanted to take it out and show it
off any chance I got.”
When she was an adult, she traded in
riding her bicycles and driving that car
throughout the city to walking in and out
of Zachary’s, the restaurant she co-owned
with her husband, Joe Downs. There, she
would serve the food and beverages to the
masses who decided to take advantage of
the nice days with the area’s first outdoor
seating and eating arrangement.
It was during this time in Downs’s life
when she began to think that there was
something amiss in her beloved city.
“I would look around and there would be
nothing there,” she said. “I wanted to see
flowers, I wanted to hear live music, and I
wanted to see new businesses going up in
the area. But back then, no one was really
thinking about putting floral arrangements
downtown, or creating live music
venues or anything like that; at least not
around these parts.”
Tapping into her well of determination —
“she inherited those skills from our parents,”
said Daryl Thomas — she told her
friends and fellows members of the business
community that they had to put all of
their heads together to come up with ideas
to “spruce up the place” and “add a bit
more life” to this region. Thus began the
formation of the Grove City Town Center
organization and the slow transformation
into growing and bustling area it is today.
“She really started the rebirth of our
downtown,” said Mayor Richard “Ike
Stage.
On July 29, Stage was just one of dozens
of city officials, civic leaders, long-time
friends and beloved family members who
came out to City Hall to celebrate Downs
and her contributions to the community as
she was named the recipient of the 2022
Grove City Rotary Club Service Above Self
award.
“It is well deserved, in my opinion,” said
Thomas. “She has done so much behindthe-scenes
work to make an impact on this
place she loves so much.”
Members of the rotary and the citizens
who served on the Service Above Self selection
committee said they could not have
agreed more.
“I have known Sharon for close to 20
years and I have always been very
impressed with her activism in trying to
create new businesses and her attempts to
bring new opportunities to the community,”
said Jim Hale, who represented the
Southwest Franklin County Historical
Society on the selection committee. “Now,
not every idea of hers manages to come to
pass, but she is sure going to work hard
and work with others to try to make it happen.”
In addition to helping establish the original
Grove City Town Center organization,
she was a promoter and advocate for the
city’s museum, an activist and cheerleader
for the city’s Buddy Ball League, the organizer
of the popular Christmas Tree Gala
at the Pinnacle, a long-time member of the
chamber of commerce, and a second generation
member of the city’s community club.
“My mother was heavily involved in the
community club and I learned so much
from the women within that association,”
said Downs. “I can only hope I have taught
something to the younger women in the
club, and to those outside of the club, too.”
Concerns about Pleasant Township road
conditions were brought up at a recent
board of trustees meeting.
Mark Mader, resident of the Timberlake
subdivision, attended the July 26 meeting
on behalf of several residents in the area
who are concerned about road conditions.
“It’s dangerous to bicycle or run on these
roads. It’s getting really bad,” said Mader.
According to Road Superintendent
Robert Bausch, the problem with the roads
in Timberlake are the transverse cracks.
“There isn’t really a good fix,” said
Bausch. “Anything that goes on it right
now is a band aid.”
Bausch said several years ago a product
was found to address these type of issues
but it was never discussed again.
“I have to see if that product is still
available with the county and what the
cost is to fill it in,” he said.
Brian Gillem also attended the meeting
as a representative from the Timberlake
Home Owners Association. He said that
they are going to have the residents in
Timberlake come to them first with their
complaints so that the Home Owners
Association can compile them into one
request to present to the trustees.
Bausch said that at the current prices,
it would cost approximately $2 million dollars
to repave the whole Timberlake subdivision,
so if anything is to happen, it would
have to be done in stages.
“I appreciate anything anyone can do,”
said Mader.
In other news, the Pleasant Township
Fire Department is looking to replace its
thermal imaging camera. The camera is
approximately 7 years old and was won in
a raffle.
“It’s reaching it’s life expectancy,” said
Fire Chief David Whiting.
As the camera is broken again, Whiting
obtained approval from the trustees to get
several quotes on what the cost of replacing
the camera would be.
Nicotine to help treat memory loss?
A study funded by the National Institutes of Health is testing
whether the nicotine patch can improve memory and functioning
in people who have mild memory loss or Mild
Cognitive Impairment (MCI).
The MIND Study – or Memory Improvement through
Nicotine Dosing – is the largest and longest running study of
its kind. MIND is looking for study volunteers who have mild
memory loss but are otherwise healthy, non-smokers over the
age of 55.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately
12 to 15 percent of people age 65 or older have mild memory
loss or MCI and are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease
or other dementias.
Currently, there is no FDA approved medication indicated
to treat this condition; however, nicotine stimulates an area in
the brain known to be important for thinking and memory, and
scientists believe it could be an effective treatment for adults
with MCI.
“People often think nicotine is addictive and harmful,
because it is in tobacco products, but it’s safe when used in
patch form,” said Paul Newhouse, MD, director of the
Vanderbilt Center for Cognitive Medicine and lead investigator
for the MIND Study. “Nicotine is an inexpensive, readily available
treatment that could have significant benefits for people
experiencing mild memory impairment.”
The MIND Study needs people to enroll in sites across the
United States. Researchers are looking for healthy, non-smoking
adults over the age of 55 who are in the earliest stages of
memory loss to participate in the MIND Study.
“The MIND Study will provide valuable information for
researchers with regard to early memory loss that is associated
with normal aging and early Alzheimer’s disease, but we need
volunteers if we are going to succeed,” said Dr. Douglas
Scharre, Director, Division of Cognitive Neurology, Center for
Cognitive and Memory Disorders.
You, or a loved one, may be eligible to participate if you
have been diagnosed with MCI or if you or your family members
notice changes in your memory:
•Are you, or a loved one, having difficulty remembering
recent events? Have you noticed changes in your memory or
your loved one’s memory?
•Is your memory as good as it was two years ago? If you
asked someone close to you about your memory, what would
they say?
Potential study volunteers can learn more by visiting
www.MINDStudy.org or by calling 1-866-MIND-150.
e benefits of learning a new language
Foreign language courses pose a significant challenge to many
students. But learning a second language can benefit students in
both the short- and long-term.
• Early language learning can improve cognitive abilities. The
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages notes
that various studies dating back several decades have connected
language learning with improved cognitive abilities. Such studies
have linked early language learning with higher IQs and superior
problem-solving skills compared to non-bilingual students.
• Bilingualism can improve memory. A study published in the
Scandinavian Journal of Psychology found that bilingualism had
positive effects on both episodic memory and semantic memory.
Episodic memory is a type of long-term memory that involves conscious
recollection of previous experiences together with their
context. Semantic memory also is a type of long-term memory
that involves the capacity to recall words, concepts or numbers.
Strengthening these types of memory can benefit children in the
classroom and outside the classroom when they reach adulthood.
• Bilingualism can make foreign travel easier. In addition to
improving students’ academic and professional prospects, bilingualism
can make it easier for students to fully engage in other
cultures when they travel overseas. Understanding a native
tongue in a foreign country can simplify travel within that country
and potentially pave the way for lifelong friendships.
Developing fluency in a foreign language is no small task, but
it’s one that’s well worth the effort.
A prehistoric display
www.columbusmessenger.com
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
The dinosaurs are coming! The
dinosaurs are coming!
A trio of prehistoric creatures will call
the atrium of the Columbus Metropolitan
Main Library, 96 S. Grant Avenue,
Columbus, their home from Aug. 16
through Oct. 31 and the library is celebrating
with special programming and activities.
“We want our Main Library to be a destination,”
said library media specialist Ben
Zenitsky. “We’re always keeping our eyes
open for engaging attractions. We’re excited
to welcome these awe, and reading,
inspiring dinosaurs as we head into the
fall.”
A Megalosaurus, Stegosaurus, and
Triceratops comprise the three-dinosaur
display created by Billings Productions–
also known as The Dinosaur Company–
which creates animatronic dinosaurs, giant
bugs, and primal predators for zoos and
museums across the world. The company is
considered a world leader in the design and
development of animatronics that focuses
on life-size, educational designs.
Although the dinosaurs at the library
are a static display, their Dinosaur
Company moving counterparts can be
found at the Columbus Zoo on Dinosaur
Island now through the end of October.
They appeared previously at the zoo in
2018 and 2019.
“Our animatronics run on air compressors
which would be a little bit noisy for a
library,” said Ande Davidson, marketing
and customer relations manager for
Billings Productions, Inc.
While details are being finalized,
Zenitsky said the Main Library’s children’s
team is planning a number of engaging
staff-led programs and customer-led activities
intended to inspire and excite.
“Everything we do ties back to books
and reading, so you can expect our shelves
to be stocked full of books about dinosaurs,”
said Zenitsky. “As always, our hope is that
children bring their curiosity with them to
the library and leave with a big stack of
books in their hands.”
Adults are not immune to the allure and
charm of prehistoric behemoths, much like
their younger counterparts. Zenitsky said
adults transform back into children when
in the presence of dinosaurs.
“Of course, we’ll have books ready for
every reader of every age,” said Zenitsky.
Once the dinosaurs are created in Texas
and ready for their journey to central Ohio,
Billings Production workers will load them
into a 53-foot truck and drive them to
Photo courtesy of Billings Productions, Inc.
This Megalosaurus is one of three dinosaurs that will be on display in the atrium of the
Columbus Metropolitan Main Library, 96 S. Grant Avenue, Columbus, from Aug. 16
through Oct. 31. There will also be a Stegosaurus and a Triceratops.
Columbus where they will be unloaded and
placed on display in the library’s atrium.
“Visitors should expect to see an amazing
and educational display of dinosaurs,”
said Davidson. “The library staff will be
there to share facts about the dinosaurs
and help teach people about their prehistoric
lives.”
The Franklin County Commissioners and Sheriff
dedicated the new James A. Karnes Corrections
Center at 2551 Fisher Road on the westside. The new
facility is scheduled to open later this year and will
replace the county’s downtown jail, which was built in
the 1960s. It provides 864 beds, and a second phase of
the new jail will open next year with an additional 426
beds.
“This jail is a legacy project and one that will serve
our community for many years to come,” said board of
commissioners president, Erica Crawley. “And the way
that it can do that most effectively is by providing
mental health services, job training and other educational
programing so that our neighbors in the jail are
able to find success when they become our neighbors
outside of the jail.”
The county team responsible for planning to replace
the county’s jail facilities partnered with the National
Institute of Corrections and traveled the nation to visit
the country’s most progressive and successful jails.
The James A. Karnes Corrections Center combines all
the best features in use around the country including
mental health and detoxification centers, accommodations
for virtual visitation, natural lighting for both
inmates and deputies, and training and programming
space to help prepare inmates for their return to the
community.
“If you want to know how a community regards its
people, you don’t have to look any farther than its jail,”
said commissioner John O’Grady. “And with the new
James A. Karnes Corrections Center, we’ve finally got
a jail facility that’s worthy of our community and its
residents.”
The new facility is designed to accommodate a new
youth services team lead at the Westland Area Library.
For close to an hour, Newport Aquarium conservation
educators Daphne Schaaf and Jordan Zulli spoke to a
crowd of more than 100 children and adults about the
amazing animals found within Tide Pools, how they
survive and adapt to their changing and hostile environments,
and then supervised as the attendees got
to touch hermit crabs, fighting conchs, sea urchins
and a lively horseshoe crab named Mushroom. Shown
here getting to touch a lively horseshoe crab is Erin
Heintz and her children Evelyn, 4, and William, 6.
Heintz said not only did her family have a great time
learning about these fascinating animals, but they
also had a great time participating in the Summer
Reading Challenge that ran from June 4 through July
31. “That is always a fun time for us,” she said.
model of corrections focused on Strategic Inmate
Management and Direct Supervision. It’s a model in
which deputies share space in pods with the incarcerated
persons they’re supervising. Each pod has built-in
rooms for medical checks or other professional visitation
and its own area for recreation. The space will
allow for increase programing, training, and education
to prepare the inmates for success when they return to
the community, and the updated philosophy has been
shown to make jails safer for both inmates and staff.
“It’s not just a jail, it’s an investment in rehabilitation,”
said commissioner Kevin Boyce. “Bettering this
infrastructure first helps support those in a crisis situation,
it then reduces recidivism and generates positive
long-term outcomes.”
Jim Karnes was the longest-serving sheriff of
Franklin County, capping off a 48-year career in law
enforcement. Karnes first joined the sheriff’s office as
a deputy in the corrections division in 1963, and served
as sheriff from 1992 until his death in 2011.
“We know that today’s inmate is tomorrow’s neighbor,”
said Sheriff Dallas Baldwin. “The vast majority of
people who enter our doors will leave the facility in a
few days. The sheriff’s office is committed to helping
those individuals start down a better path in the sincere
hope they won’t come back to jail.”
The James A. Karnes Corrections Center encompasses
nearly 430,000 square feet and cost about $360
million to build. The facility includes enough concrete
to build a sidewalk from Columbus to Dayton, more
than two miles of plumbing, and its roof covers approximately
four acres.
PAGE 16 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - August 7, 2022
In Entertainment
“e Gray Man” is a slick action thriller
Have you grown tired of the ultra-slick
and stylized action films of today? Do you
ever wish there would be more in the same
vein of those cheeky and cheesy highoctane
thrillers that were so abundant in
the past? Well, if you have in fact found
yourself wishing for just that, you might be
in luck as there is a new offering that could
be well-suited for your exquisite, albeit
extremely questionable, taste.
In Netflix’s latest attempt at the action
movie blockbuster, “The Gray Man” hits
the ground running early with a slew of
cheeky puns, groan-inducing quips, and
intense scenes of action and mayhem.
Rarely does it let up throughout the course
of its two-plus hour run time although
sometimes you wish they would scale it
back just a smidge. Small and par-for-thecourse
annoyances do lay within — as do
some more serious issues with choppy transitional
editing in a plot that incorporates
an international cat-and-mouse game — but
this film is overall a delightfully stupid
throwback to the action classics of the
1980’s and 1990’s.
Instead of using an overly beefy star like
they would in the action films of yesteryear,
the heavy lifting in the heavily
action-packed film comes from Ryan
Gosling, who is known more as a svelte
beefcake rather than a meaty meatball.
While some in the audience may find his
lack of a physically intimidating body too
unbelievable for this role (I argue that slim
people can pack a punch and dodge the fists
of 100 foes just as easily as a well-muscled
person can) he performs it quite capably in
all aspects because he can, you know, act
and emote unlike some of his action-star
brethren.
In this film, he plays Sierra Six (an OK
name for an action hero though it is no
John Matrix), a member of a covert team
within the CIA that is made up of former
criminals, some more reformed than the
others. Recruited by program lead Donald
Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton), he is tasked
with carrying out off-the-books assassinations
throughout the world although the
toll weighs heavily on his mind, body and
soul.
Upon the retirement of his long-time
handler, Six believes he may have found a
way out of the killing business, but you
know how it goes with shadowy organizations:
Just when you think you’ve found a
way out, they pull you right back in. The
person doing the pulling this time is Denny
Carmichael (Rege-Jean Page), the
youngest director in the history of the CIA.
Six is tasked with eliminating a target but
it turns out that target is a fellow “Sierra,”
only of a different number.
After a brutal fight scene that is beautifully
styled and directed by Anthony and
Joe Russo, the soon-to-be felled quasi-agent
starts spilling a few secrets about the
newest head of the CIA. Six is unbelieving
of his claims at first, but a flash drive hidden
within a medallion shows his foe was
actually telling the truth.
Knowing his time on this planet is now
limited — or more limited, given his line of
work — he jets off around the world to try to
deliver this vital piece of jewelry to the safe
hands of his allies. Of course, this challenging
task is made even more arduous when
Six discovers that a sadistic former agent
turned mercenary named Lloyd Hansen
(Chris Evans) has put a $50 million bounty
on his head and called in just about every
wetwork team in the world to take him
down.
The story in “The Gray Man,” which is
adapted from a series of spy novels from
Mark Greaney, comes across as a little convoluted
but what makes it engaging to
watch despite the deficiencies is the acting
strength of Gosling and the apparent great
www.columbusmessenger.com
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
time the secondary actors are having, especially
Evans. With a sinister mustache that
is deemed a “Trash Stache” by Six, he
chews the scenery in a way that would
make every classic action movie villain
proud.
And that is really what makes this film
work, most of the time that is. “The Gray
Man” is not a dour film or one that takes
itself too seriously; it rolls out bad puns
and quips with frenzied frequency. While it
does employ the use of more high-grade
computer effects than its throwback predecessors
— it can come off as a little slick and
stylized — the spirit of those bygone flicks
are coursing throughout this movie. While
those films and this film may not be for
everyone, it should be appreciated and
watched by those of us who sadly and inexplicably
miss the cinematic action legends
of the past.
Q: How often should someone with diabetes
get an eye exam?
A: Someone with diabetes should see an eye care professional at least
once a year for a comprehensive dilated eye exam.
Q: How can diabetes affect my vision?
A: Over time, diabetes damages small blood vessels throughout the body,
including the retina. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when these tiny blood
vessels leak blood and other fluids. This causes the retinal tissue to swell,
resulting in cloudy or blurred vision. The condition usually affects both
eyes. The longer a person has diabetes, the more likely they will develop
diabetic retinopathy. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause
blindness. (AOA)
Symptoms include: seeing spots or “floaters”, blurred vision, and difficulty
seeing at night.
Schedule your diabetic eye exam today
with Dr. Morris.
