HERO Closet helps kids
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
An in-school resource is helping
Hamilton Local Middle Schoolers in need
by providing day-to-day necessities.
The HERO Closet is the school’s own
‘rest stop’ where students can pick up
and take home items such as snack
food, hygiene products, and clothing
items. It was founded last year by a pair
of teachers - Cole Freshkorn and Jenna
Berry - who saw a need and turned
their idea into action.
“The closet is a one-stop spot where
students have access to essential items
that they might have limited access to,
or potentially zero access to, at home,”
said Freshkorn.
When Berry and Freshkorn started
working together, one of the first things
they connected with and agreed upon
was putting student-well being at the
focus of their teaching and everything
they did at Hamilton.
“With that of course comes challenges,”
said Freshkorn. “We understand
that we work in a tight-knit community,
and also understand that even
if they don’t always show it, many of our
students come from varying walks of life
and backgrounds. We never fully understand
what they are dealing with, and
we want to have the ability to help them
even after they leave our classroom.”
In its pilot year, the HERO Closet
was set up in a classroom cabinet where
students had access before and after
school, as well as between classes. This
year, Berry and Freshkorn are moving
the closet into a different classroom
with a larger space in order to expand
the closet.
“We had students use it almost every
single day to take home snacks and
other supplies,” Freshkorn said. “It
gave us a good sense of what we need to
have stocked, and what items the kids
might not need as much. Though we
started with a donation from the
Alumni Association, we saw many
members of the community, friends,
and family, as well as fellow staff members
make contributions to the closet
Zucchinifest features big time entertainment
By Katelyn Sattler
Staff Writer
The Obetz Zucchinifest is this Labor Day weekend featuring national
musical acts, rides, games, a car show, arts and crafts tents, lots of food, a
beer garden, and, naturally, delicious zucchini baked goods.
The event will be held from Sept. 2-5 at Fortress Obetz, 2050 Recreation
Trail, Obetz. Visit obetzzucchinifest.com for information. Parking and
admission are free.
According to Obetz Mayor Angela Kirk, “We decided to continue to allow
free parking again this year, which benefits residents and could help a family
that wouldn’t be able to come otherwise.”
There will be rides and games.
“We have a new ride company because the other ride company retired.
The new company told us they will be bringing more rides this year than
we’ve had in the past,” said Kirk.
The city will publish a food guide on the Zucchinifest website, so residents
will know what to expect ahead of time.
This year’s Zucchini Beer is the delicious new Summer Squash Hazy IPA
by BrewDog USA.
The event will feature more than 60 vendors, with 22 of them being food
vendors.
Kirk said there’s a parade on Sunday, Sept. 4, and “Anyone can sign up
to be in the parade. We have high school bands, some businesses, some
youth sports teams, and, of course, some politicians passing out their literature.”
The more than three-decade festival started small and has grown.
“When Zucchinifest first started out, it was in a downtown park with a
couple of pup tents and a church that was selling fried fish and cans of ,”
said Kirk. “There were no rides. It was all tents.”
The festival grew and then moved to Memorial Park and now to Fortress
Obetz.
“It’s always a good time and it’s like a homecoming for us,” said Kirk. “I
mean, everybody comes home for that. It’s our thing.”
Highlights include:
•On Sept 1, the pageant takes place in the Fortress Courtyard at 6:30
p.m.
•On Sept. 2, the festival runs from 5-11 p.m. A car show will be held
from 6-8 p.m. Concert gates
open at 6 p.m. Hott Lucy takes
the stage at 7 p.m. and Great
White performs at 9 p.m.
•On Sept. 3, festival hours
are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Red
Light Go takes the Courtyard
stage at 3 pm. Fortress gates
open at 7 p.m. The tailgate
viewing party for the Ohio
State vs. Notre Dame football
game starts at 7:30 p.m. and
Berry and Freshkorn said they were amazed at the
outpouring from fellow Hamilton Township alumni
once they noticed what they were doing in support of
students.
“It speaks to the type of community we have here,”
said Freshkorn.
Hamilton Schools Superintendent Mark Tyler said,
in a former position, he was a middle school health
teacher and an endeavor like the closet is near and
dear to his heart. He commended Berry and Freshkorn
for stepping up and taking the lead on a project that
serves the needs of Hamilton students.
The two educators are exploring options for the
HERO Closet and discussed setting up an email
address that students can go to if they need something,
but don’t want to bring attention to themselves. The
items would be delivered with anonymity.
As for keeping the closet well stocked, the organizers
are hoping the Hamilton community will continue
to support the endeavor. Berry said they need basic
clothing items such as socks and undergarments for
both boys and girls.
According to Berry, shower supplies and deodorant
for boys and girls are in demand and, during the previous
school year, socks were the first item to fly off the
shelves.
“It's one of the small items that many people don't
think about, but something our students really need,”
Berry said. “In September, we will be doing a donation
coats, jackets, hats and gloves. Many of our students
struggle to get adequate gear heading into the wintertime.
We wanted to get ahead of that this year and provide
students with what they need to stay warm.”
Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are in short
supply. However, the closet is currently well stocked
with feminine supplies and oral hygiene products.
Donations are accepted at the middle school during
IF IMPLANTS FAILS?
A dental implant is inserted into
the bone in order to support “permanent”
dentures. In effect, it is a
replacement for removable dentures.
The technique is getting better
each year. Records show that
some implants have now lasted
over 20 years.
However, what if an implant fails?
Would it leave your jaws in a worse
state than if you had worn conventional
dentures? The answer depends
on three factors:
1) How much bone was originally
available, and should the implants
have been done in the first place?
2) How well were the implants inserted
surgically and how well were
the teeth made?
Dr. Kelly
3) How long have the failed implants
remained in the mouth? If
the patient was a suitable candidate
to begin with, if everything
was done correctly, and if the failed
implant is removed as soon as possible,
there should be little or no
bone loss. Very often, another implant
can be inserted at a later date.
There is always the option for the
patient to go back to wearing conventional
dentures.
Obetz establishes Buckstone community authority
By Katelyn Sattler
Staff Writer
Obetz City Council approved the creation
of the new community authority for
Buckstone.
Buckstone is a mixed use development
that will occupy about 800 acres at the corner
of Lockbourne and Rathmell roads.
“The new community authority is a separate
board that operates independently of
the city,” said Obetz City Administrator
Rod Davisson. “It’s comprised of members
from both the city and from the participating
developers. It is the entity that receives
the tax distribution.”
The new community authority also
receives the 5 mill new community authority
charge in addition to the tax money for
the Buckstone area, and has been named
the “Buckstone Community Authority.”
“With regard to the improvements, they
can either contract with the city to make
those improvements themselves or pay for
the improvements,” said Davisson. “The
new community authority is a separate and
distinct entity. Although, to be fair, it is
controlled by the city in the sense that your
representatives are the most numerous on
the board.”
Of the nine board members appointed by
council, four are citizen members, one represents
local government, and one is a
developer (since Obetz is also a developer of
the former Warner farm in Buckstone). So
council appoints six out of nine board members.
Each board member council appoints
will serve two-year overlapping terms with
two of each of the initial citizen and developer
members appointed to serve initial
one-year terms.
Mowing expenses
Obetz is looking to reduce expenses by
contracting out mowing.
“Our lawn care expenses are running at
$1.1 million,” said Davisson. “Some of our
folks took the buyouts that worked on the
lawn care crew. We were able to continue to
get through because we have interns who
work in that department, where we keep
mowing, then reshuffle some of our other
guys to help out. All of that's coming to an
end.”
Davisson couldn’t get many companies
interested in a big contract this late in the
season, but found Davey Tree was interested.
Davisson said, “They do the tree trimming
and the neighborhoods and we were
kind of like, ‘you've been doing a good job
for us’. They were interested in taking on
this contract for us for this year. But
because they have to hire people and buy
equipment, they would really like an 18
month contract. So essentially you finish
out this year and do one more year.”
The total cost would be $550,000 per
season with Davey instead of the $1.1 million
per season the city spends on lawn
care.
Zoning issues addressed
By Katelyn Sattler
Staff Writer
A request for a zoning variance for the
property at 4251 Holstein came before the
Obetz Planning and Zoning Commission on
Aug. 10.
The application is for a variance to construct
a small shed on the corner of the
property. The property owner told the city
that because of the way the property is
graded, that was the only spot available to
put a shed. The shed would be two feet
from the property line on each side. The
zoning code requires five feet from each
side. The shed would also be in an easement.
The homeowners association is
agreeable to this location. There have been
no objections from neighbors.
The city would need access to the utility
easement, so the shed would need to be
moveable.
Council Clerk Stacey Boumis said, “I
think a lot of these smaller sheds can be
moved on skids.”
The property owner is agreeable to that.
Mayor Angela Kirk said, “As long as it
can remain moveable so that we can have
access to the utilities, I’m agreeable to
that.”
The motion passed 5-0.
Other P&Z news
•The owner of the property at 4125
Groveport Road is asking for a variance to
allow a five foot high mesh fence. A mesh
fence by itself is not permitted in the zoning
code. Chain link is permitted up to four
feet, however, mesh fence has only been
permitted as a filler for typically another
type of fence. For example, in the Butler
Farms subdivision, if they have mesh, it is
to be as part of a split rail fence, like the
three-rail.
For this parcel, the fencing is visible
from Dill Street.
Boumis thinks the fence should be more
decorative than the one the owner showed
the city, like what is permitted in Butler
Farms.
The owner indicated that a more decorative
one is no problem. He also wants to
put some landscaping on the inside and
outside of the fence.
“I think there needs to be a top rung and
a bottom rung on that fence to make that
look more like a fence than stockade fencing.
How quickly are you going to take to
do this?” asked Kirk
The owner said he can comply with the
type of decorative mesh fencing that was
shown during the meeting.
The commission approved the variance
to the zoning code, with the conditions
being that the city has access to that utility
easements as well, and that the same or
similar type fencing be constructed in comparison
to something like in Butler Farms.
Davey wanted a three year contract, but
Davisson said, “My plan would be to let
them finish this year and do next year, presuming
everything goes well, bid it next
summer for the 2024 mowing season.”
Davisson said Davey wanted to buy the
city’s equipment, but the city will keep
their mowers.
“We have about $20,000 in Scag mowers
that we’ve already bought and paid for,”
said Davisson. “If we use those every time
(for finish mowing of rights-of-way and
ditches), we won’t have to really buy anymore
for a while.”
Davisson also said Jess Griffith, now
assistant safety director, and Lionel Dean,
now in the facilities department, will still
do all of the spray and treatment, which
will “save the city about $2,000.”
Davisson estimates it will take about 65
days for the bidding process, which is why
he asked council to approve a no-bid contract
for Davey Tree this season.
“Sixty five days without mowing grass is
a problem,” he said. “But the city will save
about $600,000” off the $1.1 million the city
spends on mowing.
Other news
•Obetz Police Chief Mike Confer said
that there was not a shooting in Butler
Farms, even though television news and
Facebook said there was.
Mayor Angie Kirk added, “Several
weeks ago, the Citizen app said there was a
house on fire, which happens to be my
brother-in-law’s house. I called him and we
drove by and it was not on fire.”
Sink your teeth into “Day Shift”
While the mining of stories in the well-worn book on
vampiric lore has never truly gone out of style within
the entertainment industry, there has been a shift in
recent years to make these creatures of darkness more
humorous, and thus more palatable, to the masses.
However, there comes a time when the fan of the vampire
wishes to see something that is edgier than these
undead lightweights, but still wants the offering to
maintain an overall sense of dangerous and mischievous
fun.
Enter “Day Shift,” a new Netflix original that
attempts to bring back a more serious type of vampire,
but not one that is so serious that it makes you dream
of closing a lid on your still breathing body just to
escape the banality (see, or rather don’t see, “30 Days
of Night”). In this film, the majority of the vampires
rarely speak; instead, they use their rapidly contorting
bodies to inflict harm, horror, and a healthy dose of
humor on the audience and on those who dare try to
kill them in this bizarrely entertaining new universe.
Leading the charge on those who dare try to kill
them is Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx), a hard-working
guy who just wants to provide a better life for his 8-
year-old daughter Paige (Zion Broadnax). On his
resume — one he freely admits should be updated and
sent out to more reputable businesses — he is a longserving
and committed cleaner of swimming pools in
the San Fernando Valley but it turns out this is just a
front to hide his primary source of income: hunting and
killing the vampires who reside in his beloved city.
In this world, killing vampires is a business — slayers
earn cash by selling the fangs of the vamps they
slaughter. And although Bud tends to kill a lot of them,
his wallet and his savings are not displaying his financial
rewards. This lack is due to the revoking of his
membership in the international vampire hunting
union and the low-ball figures he gets from black market
dealers.
Upon finding out that his ex-wife plans to relocate
to Florida with their daughter in order to save money,
Bud knows that the only thing that he can do to keep
them in California is to try to get his union job back
and kill a bunch of vampires in the process — but by the
book this time. Although Bud figures the latter will not
pose an issue, he soon discovers that there are human
entertainment
The Reel Deal
and not-so-human complications at
play on his mission to earn money
for fangs. The human complication
comes in the form of Seth (Dave
Franco), a quasi-babysitter from
the union who is meant to oversee
his work and write down all of the
code violations, and the not-sohuman
complication comes in the
form of Audrey San Fernando
(Karla Souza), a feared vampiress
who is not at all impressed with
Dedra
Cordle
Bud’s slaughtering of her kin and the bloody mess he
leaves behind in his wake.
Although it is hard to find originality within the
vampire genre — the undead creatures of the night
have been around for more than a century and there
have been just as many interpretations in books, film
and television shows throughout — this film feels familiar
yet creatively fresh, and that is due in large part to
the smart script by Tyler Tice and Shay Hatten that is
so well-played by Foxx and Franco.
I have to admit that I wasn’t really feeling this
movie until the 30 minute mark when Bud and Seth
meet for the first time. While impressed with the fight
choreography that takes place prior to this event, the
human action was lagging until these two started
butting heads and jockeying to see who could chew the
most scenery. Though this film likely could have stood
on its own with this clever script, it is these two who
really made it so effortlessly entertaining.
While this film doesn’t always stick the landing or
pull off plot beats the way it wants to, “Day Shift” is a
terrific combination of humor, ferocity, and fun. And
although it won’t be for every fan of the vampire, I
think it will be a good time for those looking to sink
their teeth into a fresh action horror that packs a bit of
a punch.
Watching for the signs of the seasons
As summer steams along toward its
midpoint, I start to look for my purple pal
in the countryside.
Specifically, while I am out riding my
bicycle on the paths of Three Creeks Metro
Park, my eye scans the meadows as I watch
for my annual, colorful friend to appear.
By mid-summer, June’s wildflowers
have had their day in the sun and have
waned. The soft, lush bright green grasses
of spring have transformed into sturdy,
more coarse blades of faded green as the
sun ekes away their moisture. The plants
in the meadows are all taller as July rolls
by, but their height does not match the
glory of what is to come.
In years past, I would not expect to see
my friend in the fields until August, but in
recent times I have noticed it gracing the
meadows in late July.
I watch for it with each bike ride as July
begins to blend into August. Then, on July
26, I saw it, along with many of its purple
brethren, gracing one of the big meadows
of Three Creeks Metro Park. Ironweed -
big, bright, beautiful, and bold - its royal
purple blooms standing out amongst all
the green of the fields.
Ironweed is a tall wildflower that can
grow three to eight feet high. It’s a naturally
occurring flower and gets its name from
its strong stem. It attracts butterflies,
bees, and other pollinators.
Ironweed is a seasonal marker for me
Editor’s Notebook
along with lightning
bugs in June;
Resurrection Lilies
(which I inaccurately
call Day Lilies
because they shoot up from the ground so
fast) in July or August; Goldenrod in
September; pumpkins in October; and
Peonies in spring.
Another seasonal clock marker for me is
noticing how the angle of sunlight changes
bit by bit from month to month and the
amount of daylight changes as the solar
system spins around in its cosmic dance.
But the first sight of Ironweed remains
special for me. It is an example of beauty
and strength. Its bloom lasts a while giving
each successive bike ride a visual treat.
When its magnificent purple bloom
fades, I know that summer is slipping into
autumn. But as I continue to bike the
Three Creeks Bike path into the fall and
early winter, the Ironweed’s spent tall
stem remains as a promise that it’s glorious
bloom was once there and that it will
return again when the air is steamy, the
bugs are buzzing, and the sun is high in
the sky.
Down on the farm
reshing time
Messenger photos by Rick Palsgrove
A golden wheat field is a beautiful sight and its appearance in July means it is grain
threshing season at Metro Parks’ Slate Run Living Historical Farm, 1375 State Route
674 N., near Canal Winchester. On July 13-14, the farm workers use a 19th century era
horse powered threshing machine (at left) to separate the seed heads of wheat, oats,
barley and rye from straw stalks. Our 19th and early 20th century Central Ohio farming
ancestors used a machine similar to this. The wheat is planted in October, lies
dormant in the winter, grows again in the spring, and ripens in July when it is harvested.
After threshing, the wheat is sold for profit, fed to livestock, and some is saved for
seed. Pictured here, wheat stalks are tossed into the thresher from the farm wagon.
Threshing is hot, dusty work. One worker stands atop a wagon piled high with wheat
and uses a pitchfork to toss the wheat to another who runs it through the thresher.
After the wheat is separated the straw flies out a chute where another worker piles it
up. A Slate Run Living Historical Farm worker (above) drives the horses in a circle to
to drive an apparatus of belts and gears to power the threshing machine.

No Kidding program
The Franklin County commissioners
voted to accept a $1 million grant from the
U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services to operate a three-year program to
address economic mobility and responsible
parenting with teens and young adults.
The county’s Child Support
Enforcement Agency (CSEA) will administer
the grant and provide instruction using
the No Kidding Ohio curriculum to promote
economic mobility, build parenting
and healthy relationship skills, reduce
unplanned pregnancies, and prevent relationship
violence.
“Each of us commissioners has kids and
we know that, even in the best of circumstances,
parenting can be really tough. For
young people who are still figuring themselves
and their relationships out, and who
might not yet have a career or other
resources to fall back on, it’s even more difficult,”
said board of commissioners president
Erica Crawley. “And once you’ve
started a family, it can be even tougher to
get ahead, so with this program, we aim to
help give young people the tools and confidence
they need to thrive.”
In addition to material from child support
experts, the program will use a peerto-peer
approach, employing young parents
to augment its lessons with their own firsthand
experience. It will include a social
media and digital marketing campaign to
further the message and reach teens and
young adults with the knowledge, skills,
and resources that will help them achieve
their goals, move up the ladder of economic
mobility, and to be successful, responsible
parents.
Franklin County’s teen birth rate is
more than twice the state and national
averages, with 41.6 births per 1,000 women
aged 15-19. The grant will fund two fulltime
positions in CSEA, which will partner
with several other county and community
agencies to provide a full suite of wraparound
services to the program participants.
The new program will be stood up over
the course of the next year, with programing
set to begin in the fall of 2023.
•The first township road, which was later abandoned
and became part of farmland once owned by with Hibbs serving as the first postmaster. As late as
name was Shade. A post office opened the same year,
Timothy Sherman, was the Franklin and Chillicothe 1880, the town still contained the post office, a saloon,
Road. The first township tavern, kept by James hotel, gristmill, shops, church and school.
Culbertson, was located on the roadway.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is reminding Ohio school officials
that his office provides resources designed to help prevent
such violence before it happens.
“Prevention training saves lives,” Yost said. “We help educate
the men and women who wear the badge to recognize and defuse
catastrophes before more families are devastated.”
As part of ongoing efforts by the Attorney General’s Office to
improve school safety, the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy
(OPOTA) has developed a course called Single Officer Response to
Active Threat (SORAT), designed for school resource officers and
instructors from law enforcement agencies.
The office also awards grants to schools for use across an array
of areas to enhance student safety, including certification training
for school resource officers, active-shooter or school safety training
or equipment, and training to identify and assist students with
mental health issues. The school safety fund has about $5.4 million
remaining.
More than 1,000 Ohio law enforcement agencies and 100
schools have taken advantage of the program.
In addition, the Attorney General’s Ohio School Threat
Assessment Training Program continues to teach law enforcement
officers and school officials how to recognize and act on
behavioral warning signs before they lead to violence. Funding is
still available for school resource and DARE officers who wish to
complete the training.
Yost encourages all law enforcement officers to complete the
training; to date, 2,200 officers have done so.
Since 2020, the Attorney General's Office has provided a combined
$1 million in grant funding for Ohio law enforcement for
taking Ohio School Threat Assessment Training and conduct vulnerability
assessments on school buildings.
