Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyard-biodiversitybugs-in-my-lincoln-section Clever white-tailed spider tricks its prey AS THE days get longer and temperature warms up white-tailed spiders become more obvious. There are two species in New Zealand, the eastern white-tail Lampona murina in the North Island and common white-tail Lampona cylindrata in the South Island. The common white-tail is slightly larger being 18mm long for females and 12mm for the males. They are slender and cigar-shaped, dark reddish grey in colour with orangebrown legs. The abdomen has a pair of white dots on each side and the distinctive white tip of tail. Both white-tail species are native to south-eastern parts of Australia, with Lampona murina arriving over a 100 years ago. The Lampona cylindrata was first found in Nelson but had spread throughout South Island by 1980. White-tailed spiders feed on other spiders, particularly the grey house spider Badumna longinqua, and black house spider Badumna insignis, both also Australian natives. White-tail spiders do not use webs to catch prey, but rather find their prey guarding webs and trick them to come out. They pretend to be prey caught in the web enticing the host out, only to be eaten. White-tailed spiders are found in and around the house, garage and sheds where folded clothing, sacks and tarpaulins have been stored for a while. More concerning is that they seem to be spreading into forested areas also. White-tail spiders can bite and may leave a pair of puncture holes that can result in a small red or discoloured swelling like an insect bite. Two major scientific studies on white-tailed spiders have not found evidence that they cause necrosis even though many people claim otherwise. The issue is that people don’t keep the offending spider for a definitive identification and any puncture wound can get infected and turn necrotic.
