An international water
consultant will help decide
whether the district council can
avoid chlorinating some of its
supplies.
Blanket chlorination has been
mandated by central government
as a public health measure,
to be undertaken by November
15.
However, local bodies which
obtain an official exemption
from the country’s water authority
Taumata Arowai for any
given supply, can stop chlorinating
that supply.
their fortnightly meeting last
week, staff had met recently
with Taumata Arowai. This was
to discuss the first exemption
the district council had applied
for, for Rakaia Huts community
water supply.
They said Taumata Arowai
had commended the district
council on the structure and
detail of the exemption application.
A site visit was now planned
for September 28, to include
staff, Taumata Arowai and international
Deere has been engaged by
Taumata Arowai as part of its
process for assessing all exemption
applications. He is owner of
“Additional applications are
Warning afTEr
rubbISh fire spreads
Lincoln fire chief Jeremy
Greenwood is warning people
to be careful when burning
their rubbish after a small scrub
fire last week. “Even though we
have had a very wet winter, it
will not take long for vegetation
to dry out,” Greenwood said.
“People will need to be vigilant
about burn piles being spread to
vegetation during high winds.”
His warning comes after the
blaze on Ridge Rd, Tai Tapu,
in which a resident’s controlled
rubbish fire spread to a nearby
hedge when the north-west wind
picked up.
Number of licensed
restaurants dOUbLES
Rolleston’s licensed restaurants
are growing in number but
some are desperately seeking
staff. District licensing inspector
Malcolm Johnston said there
were nine licensed premises from
the square to the Tennyson St
precinct about three years ago.
Now there are 15 and a further
three new applications are before
the district licensing committee.
They are for restaurants Lone
Star and Drafters, and grocery
store Tennyson Market. Lone Star
and other restaurants already
open, including Joe’s Garage, are
seeking hospitality workers.
