Time to think about
the barbecue season
Gone are the days when choosing a
barbecue was an easy task. Now, with
spring in the air, it is time to think
seriously about either replacing that old
version that is rusting away in the back
yard or buying your first one to make
the most of the fine weather and the
opportunity to cook outdoors.
There are so many different ones that
making a decision can be difficult. The
first step is having a think about what
you will use the barbecue for.
If you will usually be cooking for
your family you don’t need the largest
version in the show room with all the
bells and whistles. If however you are
often the host for large family functions
or get-togethers with friends, then that
might be just what you need and they
often include roasting, smoking and
baking options.
For some people having a portable
one is the perfect choice. You can use
it at home but also put it in the car and
take it with you when you are camping
or going for a picnic at the beach.
Some versions have removable legs so
it can sit neatly on a picnic or outdoor
table. They are also a great choice if
you only have a small outdoor patio or
courtyard.
The two basic barbecue designs are
the round kettle which uses both direct
and indirect heat or the flat top grip
which cooks using direct heat only.
Another important question is
budget and prices can vary. Often
the cheaper versions are made from
painted steel so will not last as long
as those made from powder coated or
stainless steel. Also think about the
cost of accessories when working out
a budget. Extras like rotisseries, side
burners, built in thermometers,
hood lights and glass
windows can all add to the
cost.
Whether you are
upgrading or buying
your first barbecue it
pays to pre-plan what you
are looking for before you
visit your local retailer and
also ask the salesperson lots
of questions so you choose the
right one to meet your needs.
