Resurrectional Apolytikion
By means of Your Cross, O Lord, You abolished
death. To the robber You opened Paradise.
The lamentation of the myrrh-bearing
women You transformed, and You gave
Your Apostles the order to proclaim to all
that You had risen, O Christ our God, and
granted the world Your great mercy.
For the Hieromartyr
Becoming a partner with the Apostles in way of
life and successor to their thrones, O Godinspired
Saint, in the active life you found an
entrance to contemplation. Hence you rightly
expounded the word of truth, and you shed your
blood in struggling for the faith, O Hieromartyr
Cyprian. Intercede with Christ our God, beseeching
Him to save our souls.
Apolytikion of St. Catherine
Let us praise the most auspicious bride of
Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai,
our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly
silenced the eloquence of the impious by the
sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr,
she asks great mercy for all.
Apolytikion of the Church
Ιn giving birth, you did preserve your virginity;
in your dormition you did not forsake
the world O Theotokos. You were
translated onto life, since you were the
Mother of life; And by your intercessions do
you redeem our souls from death.
Kontakion
O Protection of Christians that never falls,
intercession with the Creator that never
fails, we sinners beg you, do not ignore the
voices of our prayers. O good Lady, we implore
you, quickly come unto our aid, when
we cry out to you with faith. Hurry to intercession,

EPISTLE READING
CORINTHIANS (6:1-10)
Brethren, working together with him, we
entreat you not to accept the grace of
God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable
time I have listened to you, and
helped you on the day of salvation." Behold,
now is the acceptable time; behold,
now is the day of salvation. We put no
obstacle in any one's way, so that no
fault may be found with our ministry,
but as servants of God we commend ourselves
in every way: through great endurance,
in afflictions, hardships, calamities,
beatings, imprisonments, tumults,
labors, watching, hunger; by purity,
knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the
Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful
speech, and the power of God; with the
weapons of righteousness for the right
hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor,
in ill repute and good repute. We
are treated as impostors, and yet are true;
as unknown, and yet well known; as dying,
and behold we live; as punished,
and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always
rejoicing; as poor, yet making
many rich; as having nothing, and yet
possessing everything.

sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies,

This week’s Sermon
Do on to the others
St. Luke 6 (31-36)
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today’s gospel teaches us something that we have been
told from our youngest age.
“Do unto others as you wish others do to you”. This is an
expression that sometimes we use very casually without
reflecting upon its deeper meaning. Sometimes we use it without finishing the sentence.
Do unto others… We assume people should know the rest because it is such a common
phrase. What should we do on to others? If we look at this from this perspective, we
could come up with all kinds of things that we think is appropriate to do unto others.
Most of the time unfortunately we do things to others we would not want to be done to
us. Sometimes even good things that we do for others we would not want others to do
for us.
Why?
The answer is very simple. Freedom is the most precious thing for us humans.
We would rebel against anything and anyone if they dared to take our freedom away
from us. We would even rebel if they were doing good things for us but were limiting
our ability to choose for ourselves. Freedom has been the core of the dreams of all societies.
The example of the Israelites in Egypt is a classic example. They left their livelihood
that they had in Egypt, not for a better life, but for freedom. They did not migrate
to another country, but they headed towards the desert. They embraced the unknown
because they preferred freedom over security. They preferred freedom with all that
comes with it. They chose freedom with responsibility, vulnerability, danger, fear of the
unknown.
Dear brothers and sisters, they were not naïve to choose all these things just because
they wanted to make their own decisions for themselves. In the desert there were
not too many choices anyways. The best outcome of the freedom for them was their
relationship with God. That is one of the best outcomes of freedom for us. True relationships
are based on freedom. “Do unto others” is the deepest form of relationship
and it is most beneficial when it is based on freedom. After all, it is our relationship
with one another that determines the relationship between God and us.
If God requires people to be free to relate to them then the best gift, we can
give to our neighbor is to let them be free. The best we can give them is the truth because
the Truth sets us free. Even Love can be binding or intimidating, but the Truth
sets us free. In fact, we can choke people with our overbearing Love. This is where the
expression comes handy. “Love me less but let me be free”. I would say give your
neighbor a love that comes out of Truth.

Κύρηγμα της εβδομάδας
Αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,
Το σημερινό ευαγγέλιο μας διδάσκει κάτι που μας το έχουν
πει από νεαρή ηλικία.
"Κάνε στους άλλους ό,τι επιθυμείς να κάνουν και οι άλλοι
σε σένα". Αυτή είναι μια έκφραση, που μερικές φορές
χρησιμοποιούμε πολύ άνετα χωρίς να αναλογιζόμαστε το
βαθύτερο νόημά της. Μερικές φορές τη χρησιμοποιούμε
χωρίς να ολοκληρώνουμε την πρόταση. Κάνε στους
άλλους ... Υποθέτουμε ότι οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να γνωρίζουν
την υπόλοιπη φράση, επειδή είναι μια τόσο κοινή φράση. Τι πρέπει να κάνουμε σε άλλους;
Εάν το εξετάσουμε από αυτή την προοπτική, θα μπορούσαμε να βρούμε όλα τα είδη των
πράξεων που πιστεύουμε ότι είναι κατάλληλα να κάνουμε στους άλλους. Τις περισσότερες
φορές δυστυχώς κάνουμε πράγματα σε άλλους, που δεν θα θέλαμε να κάνουν αυτοί σε
μας. Μερικές φορές ακόμη και καλά πράγματα, που κάνουμε για τους άλλους, δεν θα
θέλαμε να κάνουν άλλοι για εμάς.
Γιατί;
Η απάντηση είναι πολύ απλή. Η ελευθερία είναι το πιο πολύτιμο πράγμα για εμάς
τους ανθρώπους. Θα επαναστατούσαμε ενάντια σε οτιδήποτε και σε οποιονδήποτε, αν
τολμούσαν να μας στερήσουν την ελευθερία μας. Θα επαναστατούσαμε ακόμη και αν
έκαναν καλά πράγματα για εμάς, αλλά περιόριζαν την ικανότητά μας να επιλέγουμε για
τον εαυτό μας. Η ελευθερία αποτελεί τον πυρήνα των ονείρων όλων των κοινωνιών. Η
ζωή των Ισραηλιτών στην Αίγυπτο είναι ένα κλασικό παράδειγμα. Άφησαν όλα τα
υπάρχοντά τους, που είχαν στην Αίγυπτο, όχι για μια καλύτερη ζωή, αλλά για την
ελευθερία τους. Δεν μετανάστευσαν σε άλλη χώρα, αλλά κατευθύνθηκαν προς την έρημο.
Αγκάλιασαν το άγνωστο, επειδή προτιμούσαν την ελευθερία έναντι της ασφάλειας.
Προτίμησαν την ελευθερία με όλες τις συνέπειές της. Επέλεξαν την ευθύνη, τον κίνδυνο,
το φόβο του άγνωστου και το να γίνουν ευάλωτοι.
Αγαπητοί αδελφοί και αδελφές, δεν ήταν αφελείς να επιλέξουν όλα αυτά απλά
επειδή ήθελαν να πάρουν τις δικές τους αποφάσεις για τον εαυτό τους. Στην έρημο δεν
υπήρχαν πάρα πολλές επιλογές ούτως ή άλλως. Το καλύτερο αποτέλεσμα της ελευθερίας
γι 'αυτούς ήταν η σχέση τους με τον Θεό. Αυτό είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα αποτελέσματα
της ελευθερίας για εμάς. Οι αληθινές σχέσεις βασίζονται στην ελευθερία. Το "κάνε στους
άλλους" είναι η βαθύτερη μορφή σχέσης και είναι πολύ ωφέλιμη, όταν βασίζεται στην
ελευθερία. Εξάλλου είναι η σχέση μας μεταξύ μας, που καθορίζει τη σχέση ανάμεσα στον
Θεό και σε εμάς.
Αν ο Θεός απαιτεί από τους ανθρώπους να είναι ελεύθεροι να σχετιστούν μαζί
του , τότε το καλύτερο δώρο που μπορούμε να δώσουμε στους γείτονές μας είναι να τους
αφήσουμε ελεύθερους. Το καλύτερο που μπορούμε να τους δώσουμε είναι η αλήθεια,
διότι η Αλήθεια μας καθιστά ελεύθερους. Ακόμη και η Αγάπη μπορεί να είναι δεσμευτική
ή εκφοβιστική, αλλά η Αλήθεια μας καθιστά ελεύθερους. Στην πραγματικότητα, μπορούμε
να πνίξουμε τους ανθρώπους με την Αγάπη μας. Υπάρχει μια φράση που πιθανώς έχετε
ακούσει. "Να με αγαπάς λιγότερο, αλλά άφησέ με να είμαι ελεύθερος". Θα έλεγα να
δώσετε στον γείτονά σας, μια αγάπη που βγαίνει από την Αλήθεια.

Theophilus the Confessor
Saint Theophilus the Confessor of Bulgaria came from the area
surrounding Tiberiada. When he was thirteen, the saint secretly
left his home to go off to the monastery on Mount Selenteia. There
he matured spiritually under the guidance of the Elder, Saint Stephen.
After three years Saint Theophilus was tonsured into monasticism.
When the parents of the saint learned where their son was,
they went to the monastery and asked the igumen to send Theophilus
and several of the brethren to establish a new monastery closer
to the their home. The igumen bade all the monks to fast and to
pray, so that a sign might be received. On the third day a voice
was heard in the church giving the blessing for Theophilus to start
a new monastery, since he would become renowned for his many
spiritual exploits.
During the period of the iconoclast controversy culminating in the reign of the iniquitous
iconoclast emperor, Leo the Isaurian (717-741), Saint Theophilus openly revolted
against the iconoclast folly. In accord with the emperor’s orders, the saint was subjected
to beatings and led through the city tied up like a criminal. The emperor then gave Theophilus
over into the charge of the official, Hypatius who tried repeatedly to compel the
confessor to renounce holy icons. Theophilus remained steadfast. Instead, he succeeded
in converting Hypatius.
As proof of the validity of icons, Theophilus cited the brass serpent set up by Moses
(Num 21:9), the corroboration of the Cherubim atop the Ark of the Covenant, and finally
how the Savior Himself had given to Abgar, the Prince of Edessa, His Icon Not Made
by Hands (August 16). Persuaded by this evidence, Hypatius gained the emperor’s permission
to set the saint free. The confessor returned to his monastery. He lived only a
short time longer, and in the year 716 Saint Theophilus fell asleep peacefully in the
Lord.
