Teen dancers fundraising for US competition

LIFE-LONG dancing friends are
hoping to take on the world in
the United States.
Three dancers from Avonhead
and Russley have joined forces
to raise funds for their trip of a
lifetime, further cementing their
life-long friendship, as they aim
to raise about $10,000 each.
The trio could join 14 fellow
Canterbury-based dancers
hoping to head to a prestigious
Highland Dancing competition
in the US early next year.
Cantabrian dancers make up
more than half of the 33 Kiwis
aiming to fly the flag at the
Virginia International Tattoo in
April 2023.
Addison Jones, 16, Estelle
Buchanan, 15, and Siara Clarke,
15, have been dancing together
since they were three or four
years of age, and all agree it is an
amazing opportunity.
“The most I’ve danced in front
of is a couple of hundred [people]
at the most,” Addison said.
Estelle said the scale of the
competition is a little daunting,
“especially as it’s in a bigger
country, there’s going to be a
big amount of people coming to
watch.”
Meanwhile, Siara is looking
forward to the multicultural
aspect of the tattoo, “where it’s a
world event, it’s going to be cool
seeing different people speaking
different languages,” she said.

The New Zealand dancers
have been selected by the
New Zealand Academy of
Highland Dancing, but each
dancer needs to raise between
$7500 and $10,000 to cover their
expenses, so along with their
parents, the Christchurch trio
have decided to band together
in a number of fundraising
activities.
Estelle’s mother Sarah Buchanan
says the three families
have launched a Give-A-Little

they’ve also organised a quiz
night at The Elmwood on
November 16, and are looking
at hosting a car wash in mid-
January 2023.
The trio are students of
dance teacher Julie Hawke,
often training at Christchurch’s
Showbiz Canterbury Studio.
The trio describe being
invited to join the New Zealand
Highland Dance Company to
perform at the Virginia Tattoo
in the US in April 2023, as a
huge honour, and they’re all
hoping members of the public
could ‘highland’ fling them some
money to help them on their
way.
