A Note from the Director
Burbank has a thriving Library system with a choice
of locations, several of which are hitting significant
milestones in 2022 and 2023.
The Buena Vista Branch Library – the last new building
the City constructed – has its 20th anniversary this
December. Buena Vista resulted from a partnership
and land swap between the City of Burbank and the
Burbank Unified School District that saw a new library built on the site of the
former Lincoln Elementary School, while BUSD constructed the Mary Alice
O’Connor Family Center on the site of the former branch. For 20 years,
Buena Vista has supported its neighborhood and the broader community
by providing a modern space with study rooms, a large community meeting
room, and a strong connection with its neighboring park and playground.

The Northwest Branch Library just reached its 50th anniversary, and 2023 will
mark 10 years since the City renovated its interior and brought it up to modern
seismic standards. While it is Burbank’s smallest Library branch, Northwest
serves as an anchor to its community, providing space for afterschool studying
computer access, and children’s programs. In 2021, in response to community
need, Northwest shifted hours to provide better weekend and evening access.
Burbank Central Library will hit the milestone of 60 years in 2023. Unfortunately,
the Central Library has seen the least investment of any Burbank branch in
recent times, leaving it in deteriorated condition without many features
needed by today’s Library users. In September 2022, the City Council took action
to support continued work toward a replacement Central Library. Watch for
opportunities this fall and winter to contribute input into the new Central
Library, as well as new open space proposed for the future Burbank Civic Center.
An online survey at www.burbanklibrary.org is currently accepting responses,
with additional opportunities for public input to follow after Thanksgiving.

A Beginner’s Guide
Dr. Haydeh Fakhrabadi will discuss strategies to
combat feelings of sadness during the winter holidays.
While we will be covering ways to cope with the stress
that can arise around this season, the tools we will
discuss are applicable through out the year.
The resume writing workshop will be facilitated by
Marianne Noss from Burbank Adult School’s Workforce
Readiness Class and will provide an opportunity for
you to learn resume basics, rules of resume etiquette,
and to work on your own resume.

Virtual Write-ins
November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo).
What is NaNoWriMo? It’s a fun, seat-of-your-pants
approach to creative writing.
On November 1, participants begin working toward the goal of writing a
50,000-word novel by 11:59 pm on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm,
determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever
thought about writing a novel.
The Quill & Pint Writers’ Group will host four virtual write-ins during the
month of November (2, 9, 16, & 30). They are focused gatherings for writing but they also include writing tips, writing
games, and prizes! Let’s get that novel out of your brain and onto the page!
We will be writing together, but separately, on Zoom! Register to receive the Zoom link for
the workshops.
