CAPTAIN Mike Keen victoriously lifted the
League Cup above his head after Queens Park
Rangers won the first final of the competition to
be played at Wembley.
Division Three leaders QPR were massive
underdogs before the game against top-flight West
Brom. But the R’s turned a 2-0 half-time deficit into
a thrilling 3-2 win in the rich afternoon sun.
Albion dominated the early stages and former R’s
winger Clive Clark scored twice for the Midlands
side in the seventh and 36th minutes.
The opener came after the ball was worked down
the left in a conveyor belt of touches between
Baggies trio Tony Brown, Bobby Hope and Doug
Fraser. It was then slipped through a gap to Clark,
who scored with ease.
Clark broke clear to notch his second following
another quickfire interchange of passes involving
Doug Fraser, John Kaye and Tony Brown. QPR
seemed dead and buried at this stage.
But an incredible fightback ensued as the R’s went
out in the second half and scored three goals in 19
palpitating minutes.
First, Les Allen floated over a cute free-kick for
Roger Morgan to scamper into the middle and
head into the top corner on 63 minutes.
Then 12 minutes later, Keen’s clever through ball
picked out Rodney Marsh near the left touchline.
The Rangers talisman magically dribbled past four
bemused Albion defenders before firing in off the
base of the post for his 37th goal of the season – a
dazzling individual strike.
The winner followed in controversial circumstances
with eight minutes remaining. Amid a scramble
in the Albion box, R’s defender Ron Hunt pushed
forward and slid in to heavily challenge goalkeeper
Rick Sheppard, who lost possession and Mark
Lazarus crisply shot into the net.
