ANDY, the first season of the
Premier League was 30 years
ago now – does it only seem like
yesterday?
Where does time go, eh? It just shows
you that we are all getting old! As you
said, it seems like yesterday. But great
memories and great recollections of the
team I played in, my team-mates, the
coaching personnel, the atmosphere at
the club and the fans in a packed Loftus
Road most weeks playing against top
clubs. Lovely times and the happiest
period of my career. I am very proud to
have appeared in that QPR side with
some wonderful players who were
fantastic human beings under a brilliant
manager.
The season started for us with a live
televised game away to Manchester
City on the Monday might. There was
an incredible hullabaloo beforehand
because R’s boss Gerry Francis was
unhappy with our hectic opening
fixture schedule…
It was the dawn of a new era with what
was coming in for the Premier League.
Rangers got the fixture list through
and Gerry was a little bit up in arms. We
had a long trip that Monday, where we
wouldn’t get back to London until the
early hours of the following morning.
Then it was Southampton at home on
the Wednesday and Sheffield United at
Loftus Road on the Saturday, followed
by a midweek visit to Coventry City. So
there were four games in a very short
space of time and Gerry wasn’t happy at
all. As players, we just took the view that
we had to get on with it.
