Newproperties in
updatedtsunamizones
The Ashburton District Council
has released updated tsunami
evacuation zones after scientific
modelling showed new areas that
couldbefloodedinsome worst-case
tsunami scenarios.
The modelling was commissioned by
Environment Canterburyand has already
been completed for many other parts of
Canterbury. In theAshburtonDistrict, the
changes arerelatively minor with around
10 newproperties included in the revised
zones. Settlements such as the South
Rakaia Huts, Lower Hakatere Huts and
NorthRangitataHutswerealready located
withinexisting tsunami evacuation zones.
JaneDonaldson,StrategyandCompliance
Group Manager, said most of the newly
included area is rural land rather than
homes, however the Council still
encourages people who liveorspend time
near the coast to familiarise themselves
withtheupdatedevacuation zones.
“Coastal residents should search for
their address on our website and see if
any of their property is within atsunami
evacuation zone. These events arerare, so
people don’tneedtobealarmed,however
theyshould haveaplan forwhattodoif
theyneedtoevacuate.”
The Ashburton District has two tsunami
evacuation zones: red and orange. The
red zone ismost likely tobeaffected by
atsunami and includes estuaries, river
mouths,and beaches whereatsunami of
any size could cause strong currents and
surgesinthe water.
The orange zone is less likely to be
affected byatsunami than the red zone
and includes areas ofland that could be
floodedinalarge tsunami.
Ms Donaldson said that people in the
red and orange zones need toevacuate
immediately if they feel along or strong
earthquake, or receiveanofficial tsunami
warning.
“Our message hasn’t changed, if you feel
an earthquake that islong or strong, get
gone,” she said. “There may not be time
foranofficial warning, so once the shaking
stops, head immediately inland until
you’re outside of the evacuation zones.”
Helen Jack, Senior Scientist - Natural
Hazards at Environment Canterbury,
said the likelihood of atsunami being
created close to Ashburton’s coast is
small, and thebiggest tsunami threatsfor
the Ashburton District are those created
by large earthquakes on the Hikurangi
or Kermadec subduction zones (to the
east and north ofthe North Island), the
Puysegur subductionzone(to the southof
Fiordland),orbylarge earthquakesoffthe
coasts of CentralorSouth America.
“These tsunami evacuation zones
represent an ‘envelope’ around many
different possible worst-case tsunami
scenarios,” says Ms Jack. “Most tsunamis
will only affectthe beachand river mouth
areas inthe red zone, but occasionally
we may experience alarger tsunami that
could inundate partsofthe orangezone.”
Ms Donaldson said residents in the
affectedareascanexpecttoreceivemore
information in their mailbox shortly and
tsunami evacuation signage at coastal
locations willbeupdated.
Ashburton Civil Defence Emergency
Management will also work with coastal
communities to update their local
response plans as required.
“Many of our coastal settlements already
have good plans for warning and
protecting theircommunitiesfromnatural
disasters,”she said. “These can include
phonetreesorlocal firesirens,soifyoulive
in one of these areas, makesureyou know
whatyourcommunity hasinplace.”
She says as with other natural hazard
information, the tsunami evacuation
zoneswill be reflectedin Land Information
Memoranda (LIMs).
