worksclosely with local authorities to<br />
coordinate local searches and<br />
regional trainingevents.<br />
He cautions Cantabrians to be<br />
smartwhen venturing into their<br />
backyard, ‘‘Ifthey are going for awalk<br />
or tramp, tell someonewhere they<br />
aregoing, plan the walk or tramp,<br />
have adequate food and clothing and<br />
have two forms of communication.’’<br />
Paul is the LandSAR chairperson<br />
forthe Canterbury region,which<br />
ranges fromHanmer Springs to the<br />
Mackenzie valley.<br />
He recognisesthe challenges that<br />
Canterbury’s diverse landscapes<br />
pose to both outdoor enthusiasts and<br />
SARvolunteers, saying it takeshours<br />
to train volunteers ‘‘to ahigh<br />
standard to be able to search in all<br />
thevast landscapesinCanterbury...<br />
beaches, flat land, rugged terrain,<br />
suburban and alpine environments.’’<br />
He said he finds satisfaction in<br />
volunteering for his community, and<br />
that ‘‘it is enjoyable working with like<br />
mindedpeople throughoutthe<br />
country.’’<br />
LandSARvolunteers operate in<br />
urban, suburban, coastal,rural,<br />
mountain, and wilderness<br />
environments, and trainthroughout<br />
theyear to equipthemselveswith<br />
skills in everything from first aid to<br />
radio communications, stretcher<br />
management, rope work, and river<br />
crossings.<br />
They train alongsidepolice,<br />
familiarisingthemselveswithsearch<br />
and tracking techniques, outdoor<br />
SAR volunteers on asearch.<br />

High country anglers<br />
Beautiful weather greetedthe thousandodd<br />
anglers who celebratedthe<br />
Canterbury High Country fishery opening<br />
at the weekend.<br />
Thecalmconditions that greeted<br />
anglers enjoying the highcountry's<br />
stunning sceneryalso enabled easy fish<br />
spotting.<br />
On Saturday afternoon,around 300<br />
anglers attended the annual North<br />
Canterbury Fish &Game Lake Coleridge<br />
Fishing Competition prizegiving.<br />

Emily Craig said, ‘‘it was greattosee so<br />
many familiesout fishing together for the<br />
day. There was plenty of excitement when<br />
the junior anglersbrought their fish in for<br />
weighing.’’<br />
‘‘Just over athirdoffish entered were<br />
caughtbyjunior anglers.One junior<br />
angler hadthe biggestsalmon caughton<br />
the day,and other junior anglers gave the<br />
adults arun fortheir money, catching<br />
somereasonable fish as well.’’<br />
Withover $7500 in prizes, some anglers<br />
were out fishing at midnight to ensure<br />
they had thebestchanceofcatching afish<br />
in the competition.<br />
However, there wasalso aspotprize<br />
draw, whichmeantanglers only hadto<br />
presenttheir fishing licence to gointo<br />
the drawgenerously sponsored bythe<br />
three Canterbury Huntingand Fishing<br />
storesChristchurch,North Canterbury<br />
and <strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
Ninety fish wereweighedin, andthe<br />
heaviestfish wasabrowntrout from<br />
LakeSelfe weighing 3.41 kgs.<br />
Theheaviest 25 fish wereeither<br />
brown or rainbow trout, andexactly half<br />
of the fish weighedinweresalmon,<br />
followed by 24rainbowsand then21<br />
browns.<br />

Withlotsoffish activity on the water,<br />
Glenn changed from adry flytoa<br />
streamer, and twocasts later,caught the<br />
secondheaviest fish of the day, weighing<br />
in at 2.73kg.<br />
The three Lloyd sisters,Hannah,<br />
Charlotte and Lucy from Rangiora, each<br />
caught afish whilst out trolling onLake<br />
Coleridge and came to weigh them in, all<br />
dressed in matching Tshirts.<br />
Many more anglers were outenjoying<br />
the opening of the fishery, withplentyof<br />
fisharoundtotempt anglers.<br />
Emily said,‘‘With the longweekend<br />
coming, it's agreattimefor ahighcountryfishingtrip,<br />
with the bonus that<br />
the conditionsfor searun salmon are<br />
coming right forthe weekendaswell.’’<br />
