Artists work inspired by
New ealands dynamic geology
Exhibition
Ao-Terra is the title of thelatest exhibition
at theMcAtamney Gallery. The title gives
acluetoartist Andrew Craigs approach
to landscape painting.The dynamic geology
of our young country, New Zealand,
inspires his paintings which focus on
abstract geological forms.
In an articleinthe 29 Septemberedition
of Art Beat, hesays, The New Zealand
landscape is particularly active where
belligerent tectonic forces continually
shape the land, as do the erosive effects
of aboisterous climate. Consequently,
the land is constantly rising and falling,
particularly in areas where erosion strips
away theland surface, exposing what lies
beneath. It is this interface which interests
me, not only because it tells of our countrys
origins, but, in asense,weasindividuals
are faced with similar contests -for
example, the simultaneous effects of
growth versus decay and restlessness
versus contentment. Similarly, like the
earth, we are subject toforces beyond
ourcontrol. Andwhere theseare exposed,
aterrible beauty oftenfinds expression.
Originally from Taupo, now living in
Christchurch, Andrew says that he has
been interested in art for as long as he
can remember. As ayoung man he was
all set to attendart school, but marriage,
mortgage, and family responsibilities
precluded the required full-time
commitment. He elected to complete an
arthistory degreeinstead. He says on his
website, The craftofpainting Ilearntat
numerous workshops, many of which
were based at the School of Fine Arts
at Ilam. He followed that up with a
postgraduatequalification in landscape
architecture, which hesays pays
the bills.
He was encouraged to paint and to
exhibit his paintings by Christchurch art
patron Philip Carter, among others. His
abstract landscapes are often composed
of different geological features, sometimes
inverted. There is no sky to escape to
andnopeople to giveareference of scale.
Andrew is amused when people claim to
recognise the location of landscapes he
produces, as almost invariably, they are
abstract composites. Recently, people
have claimed to see animals and people
in hiswork. He has therefore begun putting
somesubtle humanforms into the paintings.
He says that he will let Carolyn McAtamney
knowwhere they are, so people cancheck
whether what they see is the product of
their imaginations or the artists.
Ao-Terra runs until 11 December at
