Hair careduring the summerseason
It’s the season of fun! Officially we
are still in spring but we have had
some mega warm days heading into
undoubtedly, the best season of the
year.
Summer is spent having fun, living
outdoors and while for most of us
it’s the favourite season, summer
activities can wreak havoc onyour
hair.
As we starttoenjoy and partake in the
endless fun, take aquick moment to
brush up on some hot and essential
tips to help youand your hair make it
through the summer.
Avoid excessive heat
When its already so hot outside,
adding extra heat isn’t always agreat
idea. Airdrying where possible and
trying to keep hot tool styling to a
minimum. Summer is aperfect time
to start embracing natural texture,
using salon professional products to
help youachievethis.
Sun protectant
We buy SPF products for our skin,
why would we not add some sort of
barrier to protect our hair? While sun
damage is morelikely forpeople with
fine and or lighter hair –everyone is
prone to sun damaged hair and the
best waytohelp protectand prevent
is to add abarrier between our hair
and NZ’sdamaging sun.
The best way is a direct barrier; a
hat, bandana or scarf. There are also
arange of SPF products specifically
designed forhair.
We love and recommend our Keune
Sun Shield range.Try to avoid the sun
when we reach the hottest partofthe
day. Youdon’t completely avoid the
sun keeping your hair away from the
sun when its at its most harmful can
help minimise damage.
Keep it loose
As much as ‘beachy waves’ are a
summer staple look it is also super
helpful in caring for your hair and
preventing damage in the heat.
In thesun, hair gets dryand damaged
and over time if not cared forcorrectly
ends in breakage.
Keeping hair in looser styles takes
some of the strain off especially at the
tension pointwhereyour hair tie sits.
When swimming
Wearing a cap is not everyone’s
cup of tea, so before you head out
swimming give your hair aquick rinse
with cold water and aconditioner.The
cold water closes off your hair cuticle
keeping absorption to a minimum
and conditioner acts as a barrier
against potentially damaging water.
Make sure you give it a rinse or
light flat handed wash afterwards.
Make sure you have asoft piece of
clothing or microfibre towel to dry
hair off afterwards instead of abeach
towel, apply aleave-in conditioner/
treatment and use atangle teaser or
wide tooth comb to brush after itis
towel dried.
Don’t rip hair ties out and get stuck
into anytangles createdbythe water
-hair is in its most fragile state when
its wet sobrushing and ripping hair
ties out stretches the hair causing it
to be incredibly weak and sometimes
immediate breakage.
Add in a moisturising treatment
to your night time regime after a
day’s swimming to replenish some
moisturethatmay have been lost.
Shampooing
As tempting as it is to wash probably
more often than usual, try to do the
opposite. Hair has many natural oils
thathair desperately needs especially
in the summer. Every time you
shampoo, you are stripping your hair
of these natural oils.
Extend days between shampooing by
using adry shampoo and conditioner
to absorb any excess oils. Ifyou find
even this impossible, switch to a
mild/ daily shampoo which is gentler
on hair and scalp and scrub (gently)
just the scalp and let the suds rinse
through the rest. This keeps dryness
to aminimum.
