Pavilion ownership transfers
to Geraldine Croquet Club
On Wednesday,26October, theGeraldine
Croquet Club hosted representatives of
the Geraldine Combined Hockey Club
for aspecial occasion: the handing over
of the key to the old hockey pavilion to
its new owners, the croquet club.
Speaking onbehalf of the club,
Peter McAuliffe says, The Geraldine
Croquet Club has been working with
Geraldine Combined Hockey Club and
is pleased to confirm that ownership of
the pavilion has been transferred to
Geraldine Croquet Club. The croquetclub
appreciates the significanceofthe building,
which opened on 22 October, 1923 as a
memorial to theeight hockey club members
who died in World War I.Amemorial
Hockey club presidentMeg Catherwood,
on passing over the key to croquet club
president Sue Hutchins, says, We are
thrilled to hand over the building to the
croquet club, and we wish to thank them
for the careand attention they havegiven
the building over the last20years ... they
have made many improvements to both
the pavilion and surrounding area.
Karen OKane, hockey club youth
delegate, has been liaising with the croquet
club and knows the pavilion is in safe
hands. She says, The Geraldine Croquet
Club realises the significance of the
building,and we knowthey will preserve
the heritage and history behind it. We
discussed thesalewithour life members
to reassure them that its history will be
preserved. The time was right to let the
croquet club continue with the pavilion
as their own.
Peter says, Next year willbethe 100th
anniversary of the pavilion, so celebrations
will be planned to mark this event. The
hockey club is arranging to have ahistorical
information board mounted outside the
pavilion and looksforward to celebrating
the anniversary with us.
Croquet has been playedinand around
Geraldine for over 100 years, and itis
great we nowhave ourpermanenthome
alongsideour groundsthat we canplay
on all year round. This is great for the
future of croquet in Geraldine.
An extract from the book 150 years
of Geraldine reads, The early fortunes
of the Geraldine Croquet Club were in
the hands of Mrs Hislop, the inaugural
president in 1911. Some of the original
members were Mesdames WA Sherratt,
Donald MacDonald and JP Cliff.
Two foundation members, Mr and Mrs
WHKirk, gainedNew Zealand honours.
By 1927 the membership had grown to
40, and games were played against Temuka
and Timaru clubs, though the club was
affiliated to the Christchurch Croquet
Association.
One of the croquet clubs foundation
members, 95-year-oldMarjory Matheson,
attended the celebrationsand was excited
to see it still going strong. She says,
I played croquet for many, many years,
and Iremember right back at the start
using this wonderful pavilion. Ihave a
lotofmemories, and Iloved everymoment
of it. The club hasdone alot of hardwork
keeping the pavilion and lawns looking
lovely.
The Geraldine Croquet Club always
welcomes new members. If you want to
trycroquet,turn up at the croquetlawns,
