Fall in Florida is usually not as
chilly and colorful as northern states.
We aren’t quite ready for puffy coats
or fuzzy boots, but the slightly cooler
temps are still a relief to the scorching
heat of summer, and they bring an
opportunity to better enjoy the outdoor
beauty that Florida has to offer.
Central Florida is blessed with
many options for hiking. Local
trails offer something for everyone,
whether you want to spend
an hour or a day exploring.
Below are some tips on making
your hiking experience as enjoyable
and safe as possible.
• Start in the morning.
Although the temperatures are a
tad cooler these days, the heat
can still get intense by midafternoon.
Beginning your hike early
in the morning ensures that the
weather is more conducive to
physical activity and reduces the
likelihood of overheating, especially
if you are new to hiking.
• Stay hydrated. Even if it
doesn’t feel like you are expending
a lot of energy, it’s still
very important to stay hydrated.
Some trails may be longer
than you anticipate or the temperature
could change quickly.
Always have a bottle of water
with you. An even better option is
a hydration pack that holds at least
two liters of water. You carry it like a
backpack and have hands-free access
to water throughout your entire
hike.
• Have the proper gear. Hiking
is more than just going for a walk.
The terrain can be anything from
pavement to sandy hills to paths
The state of Florida boasts more than 5,000 miles
of various trails to explore.
HOW TO ...
Go Hiking in Florida
Safely Enjoy Local Trails
covered in roots. It’s important to
be prepared for anything you might
encounter. Shoes should be either
sneakers designed for walking if the
path is paved or hiking boots for
more unstable terrain. Long pants
may not sound comfortable when
it’s still warm out, but lightweight,
breathable pants are cool enough to
wear in the heat and will also protect
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x November 17 — 30, 2022 x 5
by Lauren Salinero
your legs from the elements. You
should always wear sunscreen to
protect against the sun and reapply
as needed during your hike. A hat is
also recommended. Insects like mosquitoes,
ticks and other bugs are still
out and about. Before you start your
hike, make sure you apply bug spray.
When your hike is done, check your
body and clothes for ticks. Closely
inspect any areas where clothing is
tight, like waistbands and armpits.
No matter where you plan to hike,
review the area carefully beforehand
and know your route. Many
trails have a downloadable map or
signage that shows where each trail
leads. Even in small hiking areas, it’s
possible to get lost or be out longer
than you expect. It’s always a good
idea to bring a friend or partner to
enjoy the hike with you. Cell phone
service may not be accessible in
some areas, and if an accident occurs,
the buddy system will ensure
someone can get help if needed.
Even when you take all the recommended
precautions, accidents can
happen, and it’s important to be
prepared for anything from a scrape
to a sprained ankle. Always carry a
first aid kit that contains Band-Aids
of various sizes, tweezers, antiseptic
cream, bandages and a small pair
of scissors. Either assemble a kit
yourself, or one can be bought as a
prepackaged kit.
An activity that can be enjoyed by
anyone at any age, hiking is a cardio
exercise that helps reduce your
risk of heart disease, stroke, high
blood pressure and more. It builds
muscle mass, boosts mental health,
helps manage weight loss, and is
less strenuous on joints than running
or other high-impact workouts.
To take advantage of Southwest
Orlando’s nearby parks and wilderness
areas, search for nearby hiking
trails at floridastateparks.org. ª
Q Skal Orlando celebrates 50
years
Skal Orlando — part of Skal
International, the only international
organization that brings together
all branches of travel, tourism and
hospitality — is ranked as the second
largest Skal Club in the U.S.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this
year, Skal Orlando has more than
120 Central Florida members who
are executives and leaders with
hotels, attractions, sports and entertainment
venues, restaurant companies,
travel companies and more.
The organization meets monthly for
networking, business meetings and
dinners with speakers from the local
travel, tourism and hospitality
industry.
“For as many years as Walt Disney
World has been here, Skal Orlando
has been networking, doing business
and serving communities locally
and internationally ...” said Steve
Vinciguerra, a MetroWest resident
and president of Skal Orlando.
Skal Orlando has supported the
Perry Pavilion at Dr. P. Phillips
Hospital for five years, raising
more than $50,000 through a golf
tournament and member companies
donating supplies for guest rooms,
bathrooms and the kitchen and laundry
areas. The club has also collected
thousands of toys in an annual
holiday toy drive to benefit the Perry
Pavilion, Toys for Tots and Coalition
for the Homeless, and it has donated
a substantial amount of money to The
Joe Neary Memorial Foundation,
supporting three orphanages in Sri
Lanka.
Q Varkey organization
donates food packages
Ann Varkey, a resident of
Phillips Landing, continues her extensive
charitable efforts through her
organization, the Varkey Charity
Foundation. She recently donated
nonperishable food packages to
packages to the disabled and those
in need at an event held at the Dr. P.
Phillips YMCA. For more information
Q Harbor House programs set
up for success
During the Signature Purple Door
Luncheon, which occurred last
month during Domestic Violence
Awareness Month, representatives
of Harbor House of Central
Florida, Orange County’s only
state-certified domestic violence organization,
announced in front of
nearly 700 guests that 99.9816% of
those helped through the organization
survive an abusive relationship.
compiled by Lauren Salinero
During the event, the nonprofit
also recognized six Champions of
Courage. Among those honored
was Southwest resident and Orange
County Mayor Jerry Demings,
who was named the Champion of
Advocacy. He was honored for helping
survivors early in his career as a
beat cop all the way to reinstating the
Orange County Domestic Violence
Commission as mayor.
Harbor House is more than the 24-
hour confidential crisis hotline and
temporary emergency shelter. It also
works closely with law enforcement,
the state attorney’s office, and the
clerk of courts, as well as provides
various key programs.
Harbor House has attorneys who
work with and represent survivors on
injunctions for protection hearings. Its
Courage Closet has distributed more
than 1,500 food bags, thousands of
diapers and hundreds of car seats
ad strollers to survivors. The Paws for
Peace Kennel on its main campus enables
survivors to bring their animal
family members, thus removing a barrier
to someone leaving an abusive
relationship.
Harbor House expanded its focus
on youth to include a Children’s
Services Program, which strives to
create an environment that fosters
Phillips Landing resident Ann Varkey’s charitable organization — Varkey Charity Foundation — donates nonperishable food
packages to those in need.
During its Signatures Purple Door Luncheon, Harbor
House of Central Florida officials release the fact
that 99.9816% of those the organization helps survive an
abusive relationship.
the whole child and builds strong
families. It also works with families
to rebuild the parent/child bond that
might have been damaged
during time with the abuser.
Harbor House’s Primary
Prevention Program engages
teens in high schools and
after-school programs by
educating them with positive,
non-violent messages
about healthy relationships.
And, the organization was
the first to bring Camp
Hope to Florida, which is
the first evidence-based
camping and mentoring
program in the United
States to focus on children
and teens exposed to domestic
violence.
Q Oakland receives Local
Support Grant
The town of Oakland was
awarded a $300,000 Florida
House of Representatives Local
Support Grant for its water-system
bypass project. The grant, sponsored
by Southwest resident and
Rep. Geraldine Thompson,
would pay for approximately onehalf
of the estimated construction
costs.
The water system serving
Oakland is bisected by Florida’s
Turnpike and currently has only one
connection to the west side of town,
with a second connection eliminated
by the Turnpike widening. This
project would extend an additional
water main from the north side of
State Road 50 south underneath
the Turnpike to Johns Landing,
where it will connect to an existing
water main. All easements and
rights of way have been acquired
for the project. Drinking water quality
will be enhanced by having a
loop in the water system. Should a
water main break occur, this project
will offset the occurrences of complaints
associated with loss of water
or potential water quality issues.
“The construction of this pipeline
will provide for increased watersystem
reliability on the west side
of the Turnpike/SR 50 interchange,”
said Mike Parker, public works
director. “In addition, it will provide
assurance of water quality, water
quantity and fire protection for our
citizens in the event that interruption
of the other waterline takes place.”
The project is expected to be completed
by summer 2023.
entryway warrants some tender,
loving care. Focus on making it
open and inviting by removing
any unnecessary furnishings.
Some functional storage like a bench
with integrated coat hooks can serve
a practical purpose, and, if you have
the space, some built-in cabinetry
with an eye-catching countertop can
incorporate stylish storage.
Laundry Room
Getting motivated to do chores like
laundry is easy when you have a
beautiful setting for getting to work.
Introducing pops of color in nontraditional
places like the cabinetry adds
Unexpected Spaces
Transform small, unused areas into functional spaces to make a big impact.
a high-end elegance. Water-inspired
and earthy hues like Midtown
Matte Tidewater or Arcadia Chiffon
Cypress are perfect for the laundry
space. Both are options in Wellborn
Cabinet Inc.’s Aspire Series, which
features concealed hinges with selfclose
functionality and matching interiors
for a high-class look, even when
the doors are open for business.
Closet
A cluttered closet may not be the
first thing a guest notices, but it’s a
space you visit daily. Improving the
organizational features can streamline
your morning routine and put
you in a more positive frame of mind
to start each day. There’s no right or
wrong when it comes to closet design,
but using cabinetry in place of
open shelving and rods lends a more
luxurious feel. Plan for adequate
hanging and closed storage, and,
if space allows, be sure to plan for
shoes and accessories since these
items can easily contribute to a closet’s
disarray.
Minibar
If you fear you don’t have room
for a minibar, you may be surprised.
widths — can create an instant bar
out of just about any wall space
where you can fit a cabinet. Install
it as a coffee bar or traditional bar,
or add an optional appliance pullout
shelf for more versatility.
Pantry
Guests may not find themselves in
your pantry very often, but you likely
use this space every day. Transform
your pantry for heightened utility in
simple ways like using clear plastic
bins for small boxed foods or stylish
wicker baskets to hide away snacks.
For a more permanent solution, take
advantage of unused space on the
back of the pantry door with thin
shelves for items like seasoning packets
and smaller canned goods.
Guest Bathroom
Swapping out a tired vanity and
countertop is a relatively affordable
upgrade that can completely change
the style of a secondary bathroom.
Be sure to also update the fixtures for
a more contemporary look, and, if
the budget allows, replace the flooring.
Finish the project with a fresh
coat of paint in a light, airy shade,
and add new textiles and a few decorative
touches to complete the job.
Hideaway Storage Spaces
One feature that enhances virtually
any space is more storage. Having
convenient places to tuck away all
your stuff makes rooms feel more
open and inviting. Hidden storage
solutions are often better because
you can enjoy the functionality they
add to the space without interrupting
your design aesthetic.
Here are some clever ideas for
keeping necessary items tucked out
of sight but within easy reach:
• Built-in step stool. If you love the
look of tall cabinets but struggle to
reach the top shelves, a practical
addition is a hidden step ladder in
a pullout caddy. Specially designed
ladders that fold down extra narrow
and feature nonslip rubber treads
make this a handy addition you’ll
reach for again and again.
• Paper towel pullout. Keep paper
towels hidden but close by hiding
them in a pullout cabinet such as
Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s 12-inch-wide
model, which features a built-in paper
towel holder and bottom shelf
ideal for organizing cleaning products.
There’s also a space behind the
paper towels that’s perfect for storing
sponges and other kitchen supplies.
• Drawer dividers. While you can
find many after-market options to organize
the insides of your drawers
and cabinets, choosing organizers
designed to work seamlessly with
your cabinetry creates a more polished
look (and saves the headaches
of measuring and guesstimating the
fit). Tray dividers are useful for sorting
cookie sheets and baking pans,
while you can find dividers in a variety
of heights to match drawers below
the oven or where you store your
cutlery. Another option that serves a
similar purpose is pegs, which keep
fragile items from shifting when
drawers are opened or closed.
As temperatures drop and seasons
turn, that doesn’t mean you
have to give up on the vivid blooms
you love in your yard. Strategically
adding seasonal plants that can
withstand cooler weather is a great
way to bring color and dimension
to outdoor spaces, enhancing
your curb appeal into the autumn
months.
To educate and inspire, the plant
and gardening experts at Ball
Horticultural Co. share simple tips,
top trends and standout plants that
are ideal for fall:
Pollinator Plants
in Traditional Autumn Hues
There’s no easier way to add autumn
atmosphere to your entryway,
walkways and flower boxes than
with the warm hues of rich yellows
and sunny oranges. Blooms in
these colors convey happiness and
warmth, making them beautifully
eye-catching. Some plants in these
tones are especially attractive to
bees and butterflies, helping create
pollinator-friendly spaces.
Enjoying Living Color
in Your Outdoor Space
For example, award-winning
Echinacea Artisan yellow ombre
is a native-type prairie plant that
attracts songbirds, bees and butterflies
throughout fall and into
winter. It’s drought-tolerant and
Update
your
home for
fall with
plants and
flowers in
autumnal
colors.
low-maintenance, making it a nobrainer
for colorful autumn gardens.
Another great option as the weather
cools is Achillea millefolium Milly
Rock yellow terra cotta. This perennial
has a breathtaking golden-orange
color that is perfect for fall because
it is frost tolerant, plus it attracts pollinators
while resisting hungry rabbits
and deer.
Moody Blues Are Trending for Fall
While yellow and orange are
quintessential fall colors, you can
add an on-trend element to your
outdoor space with spreading pansy
Cool Wave blue. The stunning,
dark, moody blue hue plays nicely
when combined with a jewel-toned
autumn palette. It is also a standout
choice by itself, reflecting the cooler
weather, crisp air and clear night
skies associated with the fall months.
The vibrant shade of solid blue is
beautiful in planters and hanging
baskets as well as in landscaping
and window boxes. This sun-loving
variety is a spreading pansy, meaning
it can serve as great ground cover,
as well. You can enjoy this pansy
in fall, and with superior overwintering
hardiness, it’s the earliest pansy
to return in the spring.
Create Dimension
Through Floral Shapes
Color is one important aspect of
landscape design, but to really elevate
your outdoor appeal, consider
dimension, as well. Creating variables
in plants through shape and
texture adds visual interest, bringing
new depth to a space. To create this,
mix florals with greenery, and don’t
be afraid of nontraditional flower
shapes.
The perfect example is celosia,
which features blooms in unique
shapes such as plumes, spikes or
wavy crests. You can create any outdoor
aesthetic you desire with varieties
available in yellow, orange, red
and dark purple. Each adds texture
and dimension, pairing well with
mums and other popular autumn
florals.
Whether it’s containers, window
boxes or several strategic places in
your landscaping, you can update
your home for the fall season and
boost your curb appeal with fall
flowers. A dash of color and texture
will help your home be a standout on
the block.
Prepping windows for cold, gusty
weather is essential no matter your
home’s age, but what exactly needs
to be done? Read on for the ultimate
breakdown of how to seal windows
and protect your home from winter
chill.
• Test for air leaks. Any style of
window could have small air leaks
that allow drafts and moisture to enter
without your knowledge. Check
your windows’ seals by lighting a
match or candle and seeing if the
smoke is affected by a breeze. The
smoke trail can help pinpoint any
small cracks you should address
while weatherizing.
• Fill the seals. Reinforcing the
seal around the entire window
frame will ensure it’s ready for cold
weather. Using a product such as
Duck brand Foam Weatherstrip
Seals will help form a solid barrier
around window edges, thanks to
self-adhesive foam strips that block
drafts. This can help lower utility
costs by stopping leaks. Updating
these seals every few years helps
keep the window frame in the best
Window Weatherization 101
Keep cold winds out of your home by updating window seals.
possible shape and maintains protection
from winter winds.
• Restore with paint. Updating
your window with a fresh coat of
primer and either paint or stain
helps keep it in great condition for
Southwest Orlando Home & Real Estate x November 2022 x 5
a change in season. Not only will
it provide a new look, but paint or
stain also creates a tight seal around
the wood framework and acts as an
additional barrier for pinhole cracks
or air leaks.
• Insulate the frame. Winter
weather can be brutal in certain regions.
Rolled window insulation kits
are crystal clear and create an additional
cold-air barrier for when you
need extra protection on top of foam
seals. The window kit film comes
in an easy-to-use roll of shrink film,
which means no measuring is needed,
and excess film can be cut once
applied. Once secured to indoor
window frames, the film provides
an airtight seal that can be removed
once warmer weather arrives.
• Add thermal protection. After preparing
your window for the approaching
winter winds, swap out your
everyday curtains for thicker, thermal
fabric window treatments. These insulating
curtains typically have two or
three layers of thick fabric, combined
with a layer of acrylic foam, to prevent
air infiltration and cold.
Precautionary steps to seal in warm
air and keep out potential drafts will
help reduce energy costs this winter
— and help protect the longevity
(and comfort) of your home.
