Fall in Florida is usually not as
chilly and colorful as northern states.
We aren’t quite ready for puffy coats
or fuzzy boots, but the slightly cooler
temps are still a relief to the scorching
heat of summer, and they bring an
opportunity to better enjoy the outdoor
beauty that Florida has to offer.
Central Florida is blessed with
many options for hiking. Local
trails offer something for everyone,
whether you want to spend
an hour or a day exploring.
Below are some tips on making
your hiking experience as enjoyable
and safe as possible.
• Start in the morning.
Although the temperatures are a
tad cooler these days, the heat
can still get intense by midafternoon.
Beginning your hike early
in the morning ensures that the
weather is more conducive to
physical activity and reduces the
likelihood of overheating, especially
if you are new to hiking.
• Stay hydrated. Even if it
doesn’t feel like you are expending
a lot of energy, it’s still
very important to stay hydrated.
Some trails may be longer
than you anticipate or the temperature
could change quickly.
Always have a bottle of water
with you. An even better option is
a hydration pack that holds at least
two liters of water. You carry it like a
backpack and have hands-free access
to water throughout your entire
hike.
• Have the proper gear. Hiking
is more than just going for a walk.
The terrain can be anything from
pavement to sandy hills to paths

should always wear sunscreen to
protect against the sun and reapply
as needed during your hike. A hat is
also recommended. Insects like mosquitoes,
ticks and other bugs are still
out and about. Before you start your
hike, make sure you apply bug spray.
When your hike is done, check your
body and clothes for ticks. Closely
inspect any areas where clothing is
tight, like waistbands and armpits.
No matter where you plan to hike,
review the area carefully beforehand
and know your route. Many
trails have a downloadable map or
signage that shows where each trail
leads. Even in small hiking areas, it’s
possible to get lost or be out longer
than you expect. It’s always a good
idea to bring a friend or partner to
enjoy the hike with you. Cell phone
service may not be accessible in
some areas, and if an accident occurs,
the buddy system will ensure
someone can get help if needed.
Even when you take all the recommended
precautions, accidents can
happen, and it’s important to be
prepared for anything from a scrape
to a sprained ankle. Always carry a
first aid kit that contains Band-Aids
of various sizes, tweezers, antiseptic
cream, bandages and a small pair
of scissors. Either assemble a kit
yourself, or one can be bought as a
prepackaged kit.
An activity that can be enjoyed by
anyone at any age, hiking is a cardio
exercise that helps reduce your
risk of heart disease, stroke, high
blood pressure and more. It builds
muscle mass, boosts mental health,
helps manage weight loss, and is
less strenuous on joints than running
or other high-impact workouts.

Q Skal Orlando celebrates 50
years
Skal Orlando — part of Skal
International, the only international
organization that brings together
all branches of travel, tourism and
hospitality — is ranked as the second
largest Skal Club in the U.S.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this
year, Skal Orlando has more than
120 Central Florida members who
are executives and leaders with
hotels, attractions, sports and entertainment
venues, restaurant companies,
travel companies and more.
The organization meets monthly for
networking, business meetings and
dinners with speakers from the local
travel, tourism and hospitality
industry.
“For as many years as Walt Disney
World has been here, Skal Orlando
has been networking, doing business
and serving communities locally
and internationally ...” said Steve
Vinciguerra, a MetroWest resident
and president of Skal Orlando.
Skal Orlando has supported the
Perry Pavilion at Dr. P. Phillips
Hospital for five years, raising
more than $50,000 through a golf
tournament and member companies
donating supplies for guest rooms,
bathrooms and the kitchen and laundry
areas. The club has also collected
thousands of toys in an annual
holiday toy drive to benefit the Perry
Pavilion, Toys for Tots and Coalition
for the Homeless, and it has donated
a substantial amount of money to The
Joe Neary Memorial Foundation,
supporting three orphanages in Sri
Lanka.

Ann Varkey, a resident of
Phillips Landing, continues her extensive
charitable efforts through her
organization, the Varkey Charity

nonperishable food packages to

Q Harbor House programs set
up for success
During the Signature Purple Door

month during Domestic Violence
Awareness Month, representatives
of Harbor House of Central
Florida, Orange County’s only
state-certified domestic violence organization,
announced in front of
nearly 700 guests that 99.9816% of
those helped through the organization
survive an abusive relationship.

During the event, the nonprofit
also recognized six Champions of
Courage. Among those honored
was Southwest resident and Orange
County Mayor Jerry Demings,
who was named the Champion of
Advocacy. He was honored for helping
survivors early in his career as a
beat cop all the way to reinstating the
Orange County Domestic Violence
Commission as mayor.
Harbor House is more than the 24-
hour confidential crisis hotline and
temporary emergency shelter. It also
works closely with law enforcement,
the state attorney’s office, and the
clerk of courts, as well as provides
various key programs.
Harbor House has attorneys who
work with and represent survivors on
injunctions for protection hearings. Its
Courage Closet has distributed more
than 1,500 food bags, thousands of
diapers and hundreds of car seats
ad strollers to survivors. The Paws for
Peace Kennel on its main campus enables
survivors to bring their animal
family members, thus removing a barrier
to someone leaving an abusive
relationship.
Harbor House expanded its focus
on youth to include a Children’s
Services Program, which strives to
create an environment that fosters

Q Oakland receives Local
Support Grant
The town of Oakland was
awarded a $300,000 Florida
House of Representatives Local
Support Grant for its water-system
bypass project. The grant, sponsored
by Southwest resident and
Rep. Geraldine Thompson,
would pay for approximately onehalf
of the estimated construction
costs.
The water system serving
Oakland is bisected by Florida’s
Turnpike and currently has only one
connection to the west side of town,
with a second connection eliminated
by the Turnpike widening. This
project would extend an additional
water main from the north side of
State Road 50 south underneath
the Turnpike to Johns Landing,
where it will connect to an existing
water main. All easements and
rights of way have been acquired
for the project. Drinking water quality
will be enhanced by having a
loop in the water system. Should a
water main break occur, this project
will offset the occurrences of complaints
associated with loss of water
or potential water quality issues.
“The construction of this pipeline
will provide for increased watersystem
reliability on the west side
of the Turnpike/SR 50 interchange,”
said Mike Parker, public works
director. “In addition, it will provide
assurance of water quality, water
quantity and fire protection for our
citizens in the event that interruption
of the other waterline takes place.”
The project is expected to be completed
by summer 2023.

• Add thermal protection. After preparing
your window for the approaching
winter winds, swap out your
everyday curtains for thicker, thermal
fabric window treatments. These insulating
curtains typically have two or
three layers of thick fabric, combined
with a layer of acrylic foam, to prevent
air infiltration and cold.
