Geraldine Cup up for grabs at trotting meet
Geraldine Trotting Clubcommittee member
David Hay encourages the community
to support therace meeting on Saturday,
26 November, at Ōrari. He says, Geraldine
is one of the top grass courses and is
highly regarded. Nevertheless, the
New Zealand Racing Board is threatening
it with closure.
David says the committee operates
independently of government, so little
can be gained in petitioning political
figures. He says that rationalising the
countrys courses is inevitable but believes
thereisagoodcase for retaining Geraldine.
In the meantime, he hopes that agood
crowd will turn out to support this meeting,
the most important ofthe two annual
meetings held at Geraldine. He says that
traditionally they have enjoyed good
community support with an attendance
of between 2,000-3,000 people. In past
yearsasmall entrance fee has beencharged.
To encourage families, entry is now free.
Prize money of $150,000 is at stake,
including the $25,000 Geraldine Cup.
Punters will enjoy anine-raceprogramme.
On-coursebetting is available.Catering
andabar are available. Whilethe public
is invited to bring gazebos and picnic
lunches, the terms of the liquor licence
mean that BYO isnot permitted. The
