CHAIRMAN’S
UPDATE
- AUTUMN 2022

As I look back over 2022,
obviously the outstanding
moment so far has been the death
of our late Monarch, Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth II. I believe that
no one would have known or
experienced the rule of such a long
serving and dedicated Monarch as
Her Majesty.
The Institute was founded in 1961,
her late Majesty came to the throne
in 1952. The Royal family and the
nation are led by a new King, King
Charles III. So, in fact, it’s a visible
and emotional end of an era.
Changes or ends of eras are not
always this highly defined. In the
time that I have been Chairman of
the British Institute of Cleaning
Science, I have seen and witnessed
many subtle changes that have
represented the passing of
another era.
For example, a black-tie event is the
only event where you can be sure
that most gentlemen are wearing
a tie (at least at the beginning
of the evening). Also, more and
more staff enjoy the flexibility
of hybrid working... except of
course our cleaning operatives.
Prior to the pandemic, there was
minimal online training at BICSc,
but now approximately 80% of
our training is delivered online.
The driver for this was obviously
the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whether due to outside factors
or BICSc striving over the last
ten years to remain relevant
and up-to-date, things have
changed subtly over time. With
the introduction of CPSS in
2012, there was a major change
as COPC had remained more or
less unchanged since the 1960’s.
For example, we taught mopping in
COPC as a figure of eight (Torvill
& Dean method) but in CPSS, this
updated to systematic overlapping
passes (Carl McDermot method
i.e., Lords Cricket Ground Head
Groundsman). The reasons for
this were a fundamental change
in mopping equipment, e.g.,
flat mopping and the improved
muscular skeletal technique.
The complete rebranding of BICSc
and the name change from BBS
to BICSc Training & Services was
fundamental in consolidating
the change in our systems and
processes. Not all changes can be
traced back to a single event, but
the Institute’s strength is in working
with its members and suppliers and
having a dedicated team of staff
supported by the Council.
