trict’s facilities. 

The proposal 

As it stands, the committee’s proposal 

calls for one building with two wings—one 

for grades K-6 and one for grades 7-12—to be 

built toward the back of the district’s 178- 

acre property at the corner of State Route 

38 and Linson Road. The location would put 

the building on the highest ground on the 

property and away from the traffic on Route 

38, allowing for good drainage and increased 

safety. Currently, the FFA chapter farms 

the ground. 

Most or all of the current school buildings 

on the property would be torn down. Among 

them are the high school which was built in 

the 1970s, the intermediate school built in 

1956 with an addition in 1979, and the modular 

units erected 12 years ago to serve the 

elementary students. It’s possible that the 

FFA farm operations would move to this 

portion of the property.

MP proposal: replace 

all buildings with one

The Madison-Plains facilities advisory 

committee is proposing that the school district 

replace its current buildings with one 

new building serving grades K-12. 

Before presenting their proposal to the 

school board for consideration, committee 

members are collecting input from the public. 

The first of two community meetings 

was held on Nov. 17 in Mount Sterling. The 

second meeting is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 5 in the 

high school gym. 

“This is all tentative at this point because 

they are waiting on feedback from the public,” 

said Superintendent Chad Eisler about 

the committee’s proposal. 

The facilities advisory committee is composed 

of a cross-section of the community 

with representation from the seven townships 

in the school district, people of different 

ages and professions, and people with 

and without children enrolled in the schools. 

The group has met several times over the 

last several months to determine a potential 

course of action for the future of the dis-

Put on by the West Jefferson Community Association (WJCA), 

this year’s Christmas in the Park is a two-day event that will take 

place under more than 300,000 lights in Garrette Park. The celebration 

is set for 5-10 p.m. Dec. 9-10. From entertainment to food, 

everything is free; donations are welcome. 

The man of the hour, Santa Claus, will be available to hear children’s 

wishes both nights. He can be found in the Santa House from 

5-10 p.m. Friday and after the parade on Saturday until 10 p.m. 

Participants are asked to sign up for a time slot by leaving their 

name and phone number at the Santa House; they will receive a 

text when it’s their turn. Parents are welcome to bring their own 

cameras to take photos. 

Bonus Santa hours are planned for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. (No 

other activities will take place during this time.) Call Carol Beachy,

“We’ve added the extra hours to give Santa more time with more 

kids. It might give families with younger kids or kids with special 

needs a little more time,” Beachy said.

New this year is a trackless train ride for 

children and adults, and the carriage rides 

are back. For both, participants are asked to 

sign up for a time slot by leaving their name 

and phone number at the Gingerbread House; 

they will receive a text when it’s their turn. 

Per tradition, the West Jefferson High 

School music department will provide live 

entertainment throughout the evening on 

Friday. The music lineup for Saturday features 

two groups new to Christmas in the 

Park: the Norwood Elementary School choir 

and the Madison Choral Group. 

The lighted parade will lineup at 4:30 

p.m. Saturday at the West Jefferson American 

Legion Post, 9701 W. Broad St., and 

step off at 5:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome to 

enter; just show up at 4:30 p.m. Organizers 

ask that participants try to incorporate 

lights into their entries. The parade will 

travel west on Main Street, left onto Twin 

Street, and left onto Fellows Avenue. 

A full menu of food will be available to 

pick up in the shelter house with seating for 

eating in the entertainment tent. The offerings 

include hot chocolate, cookies, hotdogs, 

popcorn, chicken and noodles, sloppy Joes, 

and chili. 

Beachy invites everyone to visit Christmas 

in the Park for “fun, food and fellowship 

made possible by the local community.” 

The main sponsors of this year’s Christmas 

in the Park are the village of West Jefferson,

the lift to string lights), Mike’s Trucking and

CHILDERS 

Ramona Gail Childers, 84, of London, 

Ohio, died on Nov. 17, 2022, in London 

Health and Rehabilitation. Born on April 3, 

1938, in Hardy, Ky., she was the only 

daughter of Thomas Edward and Sophia 

(Brown) Childers. 

Gail graduated from high school with 

honors and went on to work professionally 

as an interior decorator for over 20 years. 

She was a member of St. John’s United 

Church of Christ in Columbus where she 

served in the choir and was often showcased 

for her ability as a trained contralto. She 

was a lifelong member of the Rosicrucian 

Order. Her passions included dancing, 

singing, organizing social events, baking, 

and her family. 

Gail is survived by: her children, Eliza 

Bethe Blythe of London, Guy V. “Rocky” 

(Eve) Teeters of Columbus, and Heather 

Dawn (Howard) Carter of Maryland; 11 

grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 

brother, Thomas Childers of Tennessee; and 

several nieces and nephew. 

She was preceded in death by: both parents; 

her brother, Douglas Childers; and her 

son, Angel Teeters.

A roofer by trade, Jerry loved fishing, his 

birds, but especially his family.

Ty Caldwell and Sarah Whipp; several 

grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings,

(Sutherland) Maynard Sr. 

A proud member of First Baptist Church 

of West Jefferson, he retired from McDonald-Douglass/Rockwell

of The Holden 22 Coal Camp Community. 

Survivors include: his wife of 62 years,

Jessica Ryan Ernst of London, Ohio, passed away on Nov. 26, 

2022. Jessica was born on Nov. 28, 1987, to Ruth Ann and Phil Ernst. 

After she graduated from London High School, Jessica attended 

and graduated from Wilmington College, receiving a bachelor of science 

degree in agriculture, majoring in animal science. Jessica had 

numerous jobs in the field, including London Animal Hospital, Binney 

Rivers Organics, Sexing Technology, and Red Cross. Jessica’s 

passion for animals had her establishing a traveling petting zoo. Jessica 

also was a lifelong 4-H member and advisor. She shared her love 

of animals with her boys, frequenting zoos, aquariums and farms. 

When not busy with the boys, Jessica dedicated time to volleyball. 

She coached varsity at Westfall, West Jefferson, London, and 

Madison-Plains. Additionally, she coached and was the administrator 

for London Elite Club Volleyball. Her love of volleyball cultivated 

lifelong friendships and provided ample opportunities for 

others who shared her passion of the sport. She truly cared about 

every athlete she worked with. 

Jessica is survived by: her children, Hunter William, Hayden Antonio, 

Hudson Ty, and Harrison Ryan; her fiancé, Marco Ortiz; 

mother, Ruth Ann Ernst (Aaron Lanigan); father, Phil Ernst 

(Sherry); sister, Jennifer Cassidy (Brandon); niece and nephew, 

Amelia and Alex; brother, James Ernst; grandmother, Carolyn 

Tewksbury; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Jessica was preceded in death by her grandfather, James Tewksbury, 

and her grandparents, Mary and Emerson Ernst. 

Harrison spent time with family before joining Jessica in heaven 

on Nov. 28, 2022. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by 

loved ones. Jessica's love for her children will live on and the memory 

of Harrison will do the same. 

The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. Dec. 2 at Madison 

County Vineyard, 106 Olive St., London. A funeral service will be 

held at 10 a.m. Dec. 3 at St. Patrick School, 226 Elm Street, London,

celebration of Jessica’s life will be held at Mount Sterling First

cation to multiple locations. 

“They went into this process without any preconceived 

notion of what (the proposal) would be,” Eisler 

said. 

“We understand that some of the people of Mount 

Sterling would like to see a school building in their village,” 

he continued. “The committee has taken data into 

consideration and feedback into consideration, and at 

this point they believe the best thing for the district as a 

whole and students as a whole would be to put a single 

building on one campus. That is the recommendation of 

the committee at this time.” 

The benefits of a single campus, Eisler said, are that 

teachers could meet easily to discuss curriculum, all students 

would receive the same services and amenities, 

and operations would be more efficient and without duplication 

allowing for financial efficiencies. 

According to district Treasurer Todd Mustain, operation 

of buildings on multiple campuses would cost an 

estimated $1.3 million more per year than operation of 

a single building. He also noted the cost to build one 

building instead of multiple buildings in different locations 

would save the district an estimated $2 million. 

Cost and payment 

The overall estimated cost for the project the committee 

is proposing is $72 million. For funding, the group is 

looking at a combination of funds from the Ohio Facilities 

Construction Commission (OFCC) and a bond issue 

to be placed on the ballot. 

The OFCC must approve projects it helps to fund. The 

commission places emphasis on educational spaces over 

areas like gyms and 

auditoriums. As a result, 

OFCC-funded 

projects tend to have 

smaller gyms and 

auditoriums with 

less seating. School 

districts can opt to 

enhance those areas 

on their own dime 

and still receive 

OFCC funding to offset 

costs of the rest of 

the project. 


Currently, the commission estimates it could cover 9 

percent ($5.5 million) of the co-funded portion of the 

project which would be approximately $62 million. The 

estimated cost to build the gym and auditorium spaces 

to suit the district would be another $10 million. 

Mustain noted that the last time Madison-Plains 

passed a bond issue for facilities was 1976. He also noted 

that Madison-Plains is the only school district in Madison 

County without some sort of new facilities in recent 

years. 

“We are well past time for needed improvements or 

replacements of our facilities,” he said. “The district has 

done its best to make sure we’re fiscally sound from an 

operational standpoint to put ourselves in the best position 

possible for facility improvements or replacements.” 

He added that Madison-Plains has one of the lowest 

effective millage rates in the area. 

Next steps 

Following the public input meeting on Dec. 5, the facilities 

advisory committee will take into consideration 

the feedback they receive and finalize their proposal for 

presentation to the school board on Dec. 20. 

“It’s up to the board to decide what they want to do 

with the committee’s recommendation. If they want to 

move forward, they will need to begin passing resolutions 

in January to get a bond issue on the May ballot,” 

Eisler said. 

Timing on any type of project would depend on the 

district securing funding. Construction would take three 

to five years to complete from the time a bond issue was 

passed.

Phat Daddy’s serves up 1,269 turkey dinners 



When it comes to Thanksgiving, the folks 

at Phat Daddy’s Pizza—along with their 

friends and supporters—outdo themselves 

year after year. 

Since 2012, the London restaurant has 

made free turkey dinners for pickup or delivery 

on Thanksgiving Day for anyone who 

wants them. This year, meals went to 1,269 

Madison County residents—a new high for 

the annual effort. 

“If you ever want to know how much 

turkey you need to feed 1,269 people, it’s 

729.52 pounds!” said Phat Daddy’s owner, 

Angie Harris. 

The statistics don’t stop there. The team 

pulling off this huge outreach includes six 

or seven people in the kitchen and 15 delivery 

teams usually made up of two people 

each. The kitchen crew cooks and freezes 

parts of the meal several days ahead of time, 

then meets early on the big day to warm it 

up and prepare the rest of the meal—from 

corn and baked beans to ham, stuffing, and 

mashed potatoes and gravy. 

“This year, we started at 4 a.m., two 

hours earlier than usual because of how 

many meals we were making,” Harris said. 

Three area families arrive at 7 a.m. to 

bag up rolls, butter, silverware, and thankyou 

notes listing everyone who donated in 

some way. The night before, another family 

takes care of bagging up the pies. 

The whole thing got rolling when a local 

non-profit was unable to keep their own 

Thanksgiving meal giveaway going. Harris 

and the Phat Daddy’s staff stepped in. The 

yearly meal tallies tell the story of how 

much the outreach has grown:

While these stats are impressive, what 

can’t be counted by number is the heartwarming 

amount of goodwill and gratitude 

that comes from it. 

“I still see people at the grocery store who 

stop me and tell me the only reason they got 

a Thanksgiving dinner was because of us,” 

Harris said. 

Most of the people who sign up to receive 

meals are older, on their own, or struggling 

financially, Harris explained. During the 

first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, residents 

who were stuck at home appreciated 

the delivery of a special meal. This year, 

many said their finances were stretched 

thin due to the economy. No matter a person’s 

circumstances, Phat Daddy’s opens its 

Thanksgiving doors to everyone. 

That generosity is reciprocated in the 

form of people coming out of the woodwork 

to donate time, food, and money. 

“For the first three years, we (Phat 

Daddy’s) did everything and covered all the 

costs, but now I get a lot of donations,” Harris 

said. 

One example is a man who received a 

meal five years ago. He was homeless at the 

time and promised he would donate a 

turkey every year moving forward. True to 

his word, he has shown up each of the last 

four years with a turkey to donate. 

Several small businesses and random individuals 

pitch in. Some people donate the 

turkeys they receive as gifts from their employers. 

Others ask for a list of what’s 

needed and then show up with food. 

“I never even ask. People just donate. 

They just want to help,” Harris said.

Karman Ogden, club president, said the 

event’s decorations, entertainment, and camaraderie 

evoke the warm feeling of a “Hallmark 

holiday Christmas.” She encourages 

anyone and everyone to take part and enjoy.

Warm & fuzzies await at Christmas in South Charleston

open, and visitors can find vendors set up 

inside First Presbyterian Church, 15 N. 

Chillicothe St. Vendor spaces are $25. To reserve

The popular Passport program is back. 

Children can pick up booklets at any participating 

business, collect stamps or stickers 

at as many businesses as they can, then 

turn in the booklet at the Presbyterian 

Church for a chance to win prizes. The 

drawing is set for 8 p.m. at the church. 

Speaking of prizes, the club is keeping with 

its tradition of holding a raffle. The grand 

prize is cash proceeds from the 50/50 portion 

of the raffle. Last year, the winner took home 

$900. Additional tickets will be drawn for five 

gift baskets containing gift cards and donations 

from local merchants. Tickets are $1 

each or $5 for six and can be purchased at 

Park National Bank, 102 S. Chillicothe St.; 

Village Chic, 17 S. Chillicothe St.; Shoemakers 

IGA, 111 S. Chillicothe St.; or by contacting 

any Community Club member. 

Food is always part of the celebration. Five 

food trucks will be set up along Chillicothe 

Street, the Polar Bar will be open, and the 

Miami View School PTA will host a cookie 

walk at Village Chic, 17 S. Chillicothe St.

The Community Club welcomes new members, 

including volunteers to serve on the
