ATHLETES FROM across
New Zealand descended on
Corsair Bay on Sunday for the
Canterbury Classic Triathlon and
Duathlon.
Environment Canterbury and
independent water quality testing
leading up to the event – which
doubled as the South Island age
group championships – showed
no contamination in the bay,
giving the Canterbury Triathlon
Club the confidence to proceed,
race director John Newsom said.
“It’s well known that you
should not go open swimming
for 24 to 48 hours at any venues
after heavy rain where there
may be storm water run-off. In
the last five years, there have
only been eight tests showing
contamination in Corsair Bay
and six of them are linked to
testing done directly after rain,”
Newsom said.
A wide variety of races were
held, including the aquathon
(swim-run) for children aged 5-9
and the main Olympic distance
triathlon and duathlon, where
the hilly route to Orton Bradley
and back was covered by the
cycle leg before a punishing run
around the trails and footpaths
between Corsair Bay and
Lyttelton. Saxon Morgan and
Brea Roderick won the Olympic
triathlon while Sam Anderson
and Lindy Millar took out the
duathlon.
