Business in the wake of the Covid pandemic
The 2022/23financial year has been one
of the hardestinmemory for local
businesses.

March,but thanks to the ongoingeffects
of Covid­19, 2022was avery hard year.
‘‘It has beenthe hardest year
financiallyfor many businesses Ihave
ever seen, and I’ve been an accountant
for over 20 years,’’ he says.
The two biggestproblems businesses
are facing todayare staffing and costs.
‘‘WhenCovid caused the lockdowns
you knew as abusiness where you
stood,and what the government was
going to do to help.
‘‘But with the number of casesinour
district fluctuating, you don’t know
what’sgoing to happenday to day for
some businesses.’’
Mr Whitesays that, alongwith some
other circumstances, has createda
sense of uncertainty in the future.
‘‘We know we have to live withCovid,
but it has been difficult for many
businesseshere, ours included,
because of the randomness of
infections.’’
While many affected can work from
home via the internet, those businesses
who need staffonthe ground struggle
immensely, as theytry to find
temporary staff to fillholes in rosters.

associated with running abusiness, and
evenliving.
‘‘‘They have all contributed to
2022/2023 being avery interesting year
as an accountant,’’ he says.

He saysthere are people struggling,
but it’s not all doom and gloom as many
local businessesstill have strong
turnover,and are proving their
resilience once again withthe current
challenges.
He expectsproprietors will look back
on these times in the future and say it
made them think more about their
businesses.
‘‘Ithas ultimatelyhelped make us to
be more efficient. It may be hard to
think about right now in the middle of
the battle,but good thingsoften come
from hard times.’’
