Gin Wigmore: Expect lively mix of
old and new at Selwyn Sounds

AMERICAN-BASED Kiwi
musician Gin Wigmore is
leaving her husband, fellow
musician Jason Butler, and their
children, Pascal, 6, and Izaiah,
3, back in the US for her New
Zealand tour, which kicks off
with Selwyn Sounds on March 4.
“Unfortunately I am leaving
my babies, husband and dear
doggie at home in LA whilst I
play this next run of shows. I will
miss their cuddles, chats and
love so much,” she said.
“But they know I need to do
this for my soul to live, grow and
be great. So, they get it. Plus, my
kids love getting their dad all to
themselves.”
Speaking from her home in
California, Wigmore said she’s
looking forward to returning to
Canterbury, having last played
here at the Isaac Theatre Royal
in 2019.
She said the crowd at Selwyn
Sounds can expect to hear some
of her famous songs like Oh My
and Black Sheep, along some new
material.
“A lively set, full of old and
new songs. My band is awesome
and such incredible players so
I can assure everyone a whole
lot of fun on hopefully a (very)
sunny summer day.”
Wigmore was in New Zealand
earlier this month and played
at the Opotiki Lantern Festival
before returning to the US to be
with her family.
She has released four albums
since 2009. She has just finished
writing a new record, with the
first single from the forthcoming
album released on Valentine’s
Day.
The song is called Someone’s
Gonna Die Tonight.
“I think that day is kinda
ridiculous, so I thought it would
be funny to release something
a little morbid, sort of the polar
opposite of Valentine’s Day.”
Wigmore is now an American
citizen, and credits living in the
US with helping to lift and
challenge her as a songwriter.
“I think the ingredients I use
for what goes into creating a
song have grown immensely.
“With more life experience
and the ability to work with a
huge amount of highly talented
individuals in all sorts of genres
I was not too familiar with prior,
has allowed me the confidence to
now write in those genres too –
or at least borrow from all styles
to create a new kind of sound for
me.
“I often feel that with more
life experience brings about new
perspectives, a more relaxed
point of view for me in this
case. And I feel this new record
reflects the ‘zoom out’ on what
life looks and feels like for me
now.”
While Wigmore works with
musicians in the US, she is
playing with her Kiwi band on
this tour – Dave Goodison and
Joe Walsh on guitars, Hannah
Elise on bass, Adam Tobeck on
drums, and Matthias Jordan on
keyboards.
At Selwyn Sounds, Wigmore
will share the stage with Blam
Blam Blam, Australian music
legends Hoodoo Gurus, Mi-Sex,
Greg Johnson, Stellar* and New
Zealand music’s elder statesman
Sir Dave Dobbyn.
