FA Cup Fourth Round Replay
The Wanderers were just four
minutes away from producing
another White Hot night similar
to 1993 when they knocked
Liverpool out of the FA Cup.
Unfortunately on this occasion
they couldn’t hold on to a lead but
it wasn’t for the lack of trying. Neil
Lennon’s lack of options, due to
injuries, saw Matt Mills drafted in
as emergency striker and, in the
58th minute, his header fell to Zach
Clough who was felled by Martin
Skrtel.
The official, Roger East, hesitated,
then pointed to the spot and up
stepped Eidur Gudjohnsen as cool
as you like to stroke the ball past
‘keeper Simon Mignolet.
Eight minutes later Bolton’s task
was made harder. Neil Danns
received a second yellow for a
late challenge on Joe Allen but,
despite this, they continued on
the front foot with both Clough
and Gudjohnsen going close. The
game was so open and David
Wheater managed to deflect a
Jordan Henderson shot onto his
own post.
Finally Liverpool got it right and
Henderson found Raheem Sterling
who drilled a ball into the bottom
corner for the equaliser. The fourth
official showed five minutes of
added time, enough for Phillipe
Coutinho to send a cuurling shot
into the top corner for the winner,
the home support leaving rightly
proud of the team that had come
so close to causing an upset.
