PAGE 10 - MADISON MESSENGER - February 26, 2023 I have to admit I have not stayed up-to-date with the latest happenings in the Marvel cinematic universe. After the release of more than 40 Marvel films and television shows in 15 years, I am a bit tired of this world. But, I also have to admit I always keep my eyes open for anything and everything related to the “Ant-Man” franchise. Ever since the shrinking superhero series debuted in 2015, it has stood apart. I think that’s because it centers around an average guy. Or, in this case, an ex-con named Scott Lang who temporarily gains superpowers after he accidentally dons a suit that shrinks him to ant-size with the push of a button. Played by the affable and charming actor Paul Rudd, Scott’s adventures in and out of the suit have made these films that are full of low stakes, fun hijinks, and shiftsin-scale camera shots something to look forward to. When I heard “Ant-Man” was getting his third solo film, I was excited even though the Marvel fatigue had set in. When I heard the film was going to kick-start phase five of bringing every single Marvel comic book character to life on the big screen (that might be a slight exaggeration), my excitement waned. I knew this probably meant Marvel Studios had taken over the “Ant-Man” franchise in service of the greater Marvel machine. And that is exactly what happened with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” Gone are the fun hijinks, the quirky personalities, and the laidback feel of the first two Ant-Man films. Instead, we get a proper Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, complete with high stakes, intense drama, copious battle scenes, lore and villainy to sustain the next decade of Marvel film and television properties. The only thing that saves this film or makes it worthwhile to watch are the performances by the main cast and the warrior ants. When the awkwardly titled film begins, we learn Scott has been on quite the tear in the years since helping save the world from Thanos. His tear nowadays is not helping people, technically, but rather touring the country to sell his memoir. The book recounts his transition from an ex-con to an Avenger whose idea sparked the www.madisonmessengernews.com Marvel uses latest ‘Ant-Man’ film to plan for future time heist that restored billions of lives during the Infinity Battle. While Scott is proud of his accomplishments, his 18-yearold daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton) is less than impressed by this latest version of her father, believing he should still be “looking out for the little guy.” Since taking up the little-guy cause herself, Cassie has gotten into trouble with the law. After her latest arrest at a protest for homeless rights, Cassie and her dad get into an argument. They then get sucked into the Quantum Realm, a subatomic world under the Earth filled with beauty, mystery, and dangerous creatures. Along for the ride are Scott’s superhero romantic partner Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and her parents Janet van Dyne and Hank Pym (Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas). One of the most dangerous creatures in this strange new world is Kang the Conqueror (a fantastic Jonathan Majors), a time traveler who had laid waste to much of the Quantum Realm. Trapped there for decades, Kang is eager to travel into a different timeline because there is so much to see, so much to conquer, so much to destroy. Naturally, it falls on Scott and his not-so-merry band of troublemakers to ensure that Kang does not get out. Boys’ basketball • League champion: Jonathan Alder • First team all-league: junior Peyton Heiss of Jonathan Alder and junior Zach Jones of London; • Second team all-league: senior Carter Harrington of Jonathan Alder and senior Brady Carter of London; the reel deal Dedra Cordle confuse me. The introduction of Kang the Conqueror in the “Ant-Man” series is a real headscratcher. Kang’s presence creates a tonal imbalance throughout the film, especially when Scott and Kang meet and eventually battle. I guess that’s what happens when you shoehorn a bunch of lore and heavy action into a movie franchise that has always been light on both. “Quantumania” relies too heavily on computer generated imagery and action to get points and plots across. It did not have to be this way. Marvel Studios should have trusted director Peyton Reed and writers Jeff Loveness and Jack Kirby to come up with something inventive that fit in the previously established “Ant-Man” framework. Instead, Marvel executives ended up making a very sad “Ant-Man” experience for this fan. Good thing we had the charming presence of Rudd and the talent of Pfeiffer and Majors to make up for all that it lacked. Grade: C- Dedra Cordle is a Messenger staff writer and columnist. Life saving award goes to two sheriff’s deputies Madison County Sheriff John Swaney (left) presents the Buckeye State Sheriffs Association Life Saving Award to Dep. Dominic Parks (middle) and Dep. Mike Stone. On Oct. 19, 2022, Parks and Stone were on patrol around Darby Drive in Jefferson Township when they noticed smoke coming from a resident’s home. They notified dispatch and began to check around the residence at which time a male was found still inside. Entry was made and the male was escorted out. He then advised deputies that his wife was still inside. Entry was made back into the residence and the female was located and escorted out of the home.
