District Swimming Championships. Lotton’s sixth-place finish earned him a trip to the state championships.
Lotton: LHS’s first state
qualifier in swimming
The London High School swim team may
be small in numbers, but the team continues
to perform at a high level. Earlier in the
season, the squad of six swimmers placed
third in the Kenton Trail Division at the
Central Buckeye Conference meet. On Feb.
16, the team was hoping to place well in the
OHSAA Central District Championship
meet held at the McCorkle Center at The
Ohio State University.
Despite only having four qualifiers for
the meet, the Red Raiders placed 16th out
of more than 65 teams. Leading the way for
the red and white was freshman sensation
Griffin Lotton who, with a sixth-place finish
in the 500-meter freestyle, became the first
London swimmer to qualify for the OHSAA
State Championships.
Lotton also placed ninth in the 200-meter
freestyle and was the leadoff swimmer for
the London boys’ 200-meter free relay and
400-meter free relay teams which finished
14th and 12th, respectively. He was joined
on the relays by sophomores Isaiah Capell
and Luke Thompson and junior Isaac
Capell.
The brothers Capell and Thompson competed
in individual events at districts, as
well. Isaac Capell placed 25th in the 200-
meter individual medley, Isaiah Capell
placed 30th in the 100-meter freestyle, and
Thompson placed 25th in the 100-meter
backstroke.
On the girls’ side, London senior Isabelle
Tipton made a return trip to the McCorkle
Aquatic Center after qualifying for districts
in one event as a junior. This year, Tipton
qualified for two events; she placed 30th in
the 200-meter individual medley and 32nd
in the 100-meter breaststroke.
The first in a series of rate hikes for London sewer, water,
and trash services goes into effect July 1.
London city council unanimously approved the increases at
their Feb. 16 meeting. The city’s Board of Public Utilities (BPU)
has proposed an estimated $18.5 million in sewer and water system
repairs and upgrades. Revenues from the sewer and water
rate increases will go to loan payments on those projects.
Currently, residents pay a base minimum rate of $1.50 per
month for sewer services. A
$5.99 per month increase
will go into effect starting
July 1, 2023, followed by a
second $5.99 increase starting
Jan. 1, 2024, and a third
increase of $5.99 starting
Jan. 1, 2025. That will
bring the base minimum
monthly rate to $19.47 per
month by 2025.
BPU also had proposed a 3 percent increase in sewer rates
each year starting in 2026 for a continuing period of time to
cover inflation and ongoing needs of the department. Council
voted to amend this part of the proposal based, in part, on pushback
from the public.
“The 3 percent seems to be a real sticking point with a lot of
people that have talked with me about it,” said council member
Rich Hays.
Council member Bryan Robinson suggested the legislation
require a review every five years, starting in 2028, of the need
for the 3 percent yearly increase. Council voted unanimously to
make that change.
For water services, residents currently pay $17.12 per month
for the first 2,000 gallons of water usage. Council approved an
increase of 51 cents per month starting Jan. 1, 2023, which will
bring the base rate to $17.63 per month.
Trash rates will go from $17.80 per month to $20.15 per
month starting July 1, 2023.
BPU had proposed an ongoing 3 percent yearly increase for
both water and trash services starting Jan. 1, 2024. As with the
water rates, Robinson suggested the legislation for the water
and trash service rates require an automatic review of the 3 percent
yearly increase every five years starting in 2028. Council
voted unanimously to make those changes.
Following the votes, Hays and council member John Stahl
said the rate hikes and the infrastructure improvements those
hikes are funding will help to set up the city for the future.
“Things are going to start coming. We just got to be ready for
it,” Hays said.
Council member Joshua Peters commented, “I’m excited for
the future, especially with the infrastructure. Excited to see
what’s coming to London, how it’s growing. It’s going to be neat
to see.”
Synthetic field turf planned for LHS ball fields
leading to cancellation of practices and games. Because
the season is short, rescheduling can be tough if not impossible.
Last year, bad weather forced the London High
School athletics program to cancel a total of 22 games
across the boys’ and girls’ varsity and junior varsity
schedules.
The school district is taking a major
step to alleviate these woes for future ball
teams. On Feb. 14, the school board approved
a contract with Maumee Bay Turf
Center to install synthetic field turf at the
Ralph Cromwell softball field and the
Sonny Wheeler baseball field at the high
school.
“The turf is expected to significantly
decrease weather-related cancellations,”
said Dr. Lou Kramer, district superintendent.
Construction is slated to start late this summer. The
new turf will cover the entire softball field. The baseball
field is much larger, covering more space than the football
field. To save money, the district has chosen to install
field turf on the infield only at the baseball field,
along with a five-foot strip around the backside of the
infield so infielders won’t have to transition too often
between turf and grass.
The first pitch at both fields is expected in the spring
of 2024. Maumee Bay Turf Center is the company that
installed field turf at the high school’s Bowlus Field
seven years ago.
“Our No. 1 thing is looking at ways to benefit our programs
and our students. This is another step,” said Jim
Wolverton, athletic director. “When we did the turf project
at Bowlus Field, we got a suitable space to play football
and soccer. We think we will see the same return
on investment for the softball and baseball fields.”
The estimated cost of the project is $930,000. In the
past, private donations have helped to cover the cost of
some athletic complex improvements at London City
Schools. This time, the school district is covering the entire
cost.
“Due to keen fiscal stewardship over the last several
years, the district plans to self-fund the project. As such,
the project was included as part of the district’s recent
five-year (financial) forecast,” Kramer stated.
“Our No. 1 thing is
looking at ways to
benefit our programs
and our students.
This is another step.”
Robinson thanked the BPU for the work they have done to create
a plan for addressing infrastructure needs.
Council member Andy Hitt and council president Henry Comer
thanked the public for voicing their concerns and suggestions at
city council meetings. Comer said council
could not have made the hard decisions
without input from the community.
“We made some changes and adjustments
by listening to some of the objections
of the community,” Comer said.
Council member Greg Eades mentioned
a letter the city received from a resident
who opposed the utility rate hikes, saying
school club team of the Champaign Family
YMCA. Team Champ serves student-athletes
from London, Mechanicsburg, West
Liberty-Salem, and Graham high schools.
The team qualified 10 of its 33 swimmers to
districts this year in 13 events, both records
“This demonstrates that the district wants to reinvest
in its facilities,” he continued. “Because we’ve been
mindful of our finances, we’re able to put that back into
the facilities without going out (to the community) for
an ask.”
The benefits the district hopes to see with this project
include increased playing time for athletes
throughout the year, but especially
during the spring competition season.
This is good news most notably for junior
varsity ball players, as the varsity schedule
typically takes priority over the junior
varsity schedule when it comes to field use
and rescheduling games.
Another benefit is more practice space
for other sports. The ball fields will be
built so that bases and pitching mounds
can be removed, making for a flat surface for other
sports to use.
The newly turfed fields are expected to generate revenue
for the school district , as well, through tournaments
and facility rentals. Those revenues will go back
into supporting upgrades to the district’s athletic facilities.
The football/soccer field is a good example. A
travel youth soccer team from Hilliard regularly rents
the field, resulting in $18,000 in revenue for London
City Schools.
Besides the removable bases and pitching mounds,
the fields are being built to accommodate different base
and pitching mound distances. This way a wide range
of ages can use the fields, opening the district to additional
rental opportunities, as well as helping out local
youth programs.
“We see numbers in youth sports growing in London.
Those programs might run out of space if it keeps going
the way it is. The school’s fields can help with that,”
Kramer said. “We are very open to helping. We really
feel like it can be a community asset, not just for our
students but for our (local) youth programs.”
London Fast Pitch, a youth softball program, already
uses the high school’s fields. The London Area Baseball
Council could benefit, too, as could some of the local
travel ball clubs, whether for growth reasons, tournament
needs, or weather issues, Wolverton said.
–Jim Wolverton,
athletic director
she felt she would have to make a decision
between paying her utility bills and voting
for the income tax increase for additional
funding for the fire and EMS department.
The income tax increase for fire/EMS will
appear on the May 2 primary election ballot.
“I really hope that people don’t feel that
they have to make that decision, because we
have a fire department. We need to have a
fire department, and we know that the problems
they have, have been years in the making,
and they’re going to need help
financially.”
for the club. In addition to being the first
Aqua Raider to qualify for the state championships,
Lotton is also the first state qualifier
for Team Champ.
Diving Championships began on Feb. 23 at
C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton (after
the Madison Messenger’s deadline).

Mount Sterling council must fill a vacancy
following the resignation of council
The remaining council members will review the letters, conduct interviews,
and make a selection. If they do not appoint someone within
member Rob Longcoy.
the 30-day period, the task will go to Mayor Marci Darlington.
Longcoy has moved outside of village
Longcoy was elected to Mount Sterling council in November
limits and, therefore, can no longer serve on
2021. At the time of his resignation, he had served 14.5 months of
council. He submitted his resignation on
his four-year term. The person appointed to his seat will serve the
Feb. 14. Council has 30 days to fill the
remainder of the term which expires at the end of 2025.
“I enjoyed my time on council. I feel we worked very well together
Anyone interested in filling the vacancy
and accomplished many great things over the past year for the village.
Every member is truly passionate about our community,”
must submit a letter of interest to Courtney
parties must be village residents
Longcoy said.
He points to his work with parks and recreation as his greatest
accomplishment while on council. He said he has enjoyed watching
Mason Park develop and looks forward to further improvements in
the coming months.
“I really feel Mason Park could be the jewel of our community,”
he said. “Our community’s youth are our future, and having a place
like Mason Park is a huge deal to me.”
Longcoy moved outside of village limits to a home that fits the
needs of his growing family, but he still lives close by.
“I will still be involved with the park, Summer Jam, and any
other activities that bring our village together and give families and
our youth something to do. Our community is often overlooked.
These events shine a positive light on our village,” he said.
Longcoy thanked everyone who supported him in his time on
council and said it was a pleasure to serve his community. If the
right opportunity presents itself and his family moves back into the
village, he said he “most definitely” would run again for a seat on
council.
Staff Writer
Jefferson Local Schools’ ability to prepare,
edit and produce school board documents
could get easier for district staff and
community members interested in following
board action and agendas.
During the school board’s Feb. 14 meeting,
members conducted a video chat presentation
with BoardDocs, a software
company that works with school districts
and other public entities across the nation.
According to the Ohio School Boards Association,
of which Jefferson Local is a
member, “OSBA has teamed up with Board-
Docs to offer board management services
that give governing bodies turn-key electronic
solutions for processing any type of
governance document.
“BoardDocs has helped nearly 4,000 organizations
dramatically reduce costs, increase
transparency and reduce the time
spent producing board packets by up to 75
percent.”
Jefferson Local Superintendent William Mullett said the board
plans to discuss the idea of moving to the cloud-based system during
their next work session. He said Technology Director Curt Dennis
and Treasurer Mark Ingles are spearheading the project.
“The board will give consideration to what (BoardDocs) can do,”
Mullett said. “It certainly would save time with all the preparation
we do, especially my secretary, in getting the board packets ready
for a meeting.
“Generally, the BoardDocs representatives satisfied our questions
during their remote presentation. I know many school districts
use them. They’re the most popular in that platform, and I
think we’ll eventually move in that direction.”
The OSBA reported organizations such as Jefferson Local
Schools have the ability to determine which stakeholders–board
members, staff and the general public–
have access to each document.
“Last-minute revisions are easy, and documents
can be distributed in just minutes,”
stated the school board association.
Mullett said the initial service expense
in contracting with BoardDocs is approximately
$6,000 per year, which he felt would
more than balance out the cost of manually
producing board documents.
Middle-schoolers get head start on career plans
When school started this past fall, most Madison
County seventh- and eighth-graders had a new class on
their schedule: Career Explorations. Tolles Career and
Technical Center instructors teach the semester-long
course on site at London, Madison-Plains, and West Jefferson
middle schools. The course is designed to help
students get an early start on identifying and planning
for potential careers.
“There are so many different things involved in
choosing a career,” says Christina Van Dyke, the Tolles
satellite instructor for London City Schools. “The earlier
they make decisions, the better prepared they can be.”
If, for example, a student wants to pursue a career
requiring a college degree, knowing that before high
school allows them to enroll in College Credit Plus and
Advanced Placement courses as a sophomore, junior, or
senior that can yield free credits at many in-state and
some out-of-state universities. This can save collegebound
students time and tuition expenses as they pursue
their degree.
If, instead, a student wants to pursue a career directly
out of high school, knowing what career interests
them most before they turn 16 allows them to line up a
part-time job or internship in their chosen field to ensure
it’s a good fit—or enroll in specialized career education
courses to get a head start on learning the specific
skill sets needed to be job-ready upon graduation.
“What’s going to help you get where you want to be
and how can we give you the best foot forward on that
path?” asks Jill Hiles, Tolles satellite instructor for Madison-Plains
Local Schools. “We bring all those pieces together.
Not all students know there are different paths.”
The Career Explorations curriculum centers around
each student’s skills and interests and exposes the students
to careers they may not know about but are growing
and could be a good fit.
“Our worlds are so small sometimes,” says Tolles
Satellite Director Dr. Kris Sander. “We know what our
parents or other family members do for their careers,
but sometimes we don’t look beyond that.”
“Letting them see what’s out there can help them
match up careers with their personality and skills,”
Hiles says. “They often have skills they may take for
granted, like operating certain types of equipment or
machinery, or being exposed to large animals, or just
working outdoors. Not everyone has that, but because
we’re in a rural setting, the majority of people they
know have those skills, so they don’t see them as valuable.”
“I like to ask my students, ‘What do you absolutely
not want to be?’” Van Dyke says. “That’s just as important
as what you think you want to be when you’re
starting to consider what’s a good fit.”
As an example, Van Dyke points to her own daughter
who thought she wanted to be a teacher, but when she
started student teaching, realized she didn’t like being
around children.
“It was the lifestyle she liked, but she didn’t take into
account some of the other important factors,” she explains.
“That added a year-and-a-half to her college experience
and wasted a lot of money because she didn’t
think about the things she didn’t like.”
Freshmen at Madison-Plains High School are required
to take a course called Launching Your Career which is
similar to the Career Explorations course.
“At the high school level, it’s more about what training
they need, what minimum education they need, how to
get that, and where those jobs are geographically,” Hiles
says. “For instance, if you want to be a marine biologist,
unless you’re looking at the Great Lakes or the Ohio
River, that’s a career that’s going to be very limited here.”
Van Dyke says the high school course also touches
on workforce readiness skills, including how to interview
and advocate for yourself and the importance of
being punctual and reliable.
“It’s more about your future, not just your career,”
she says. “I ask them, ‘What needs do you see in the
world, and how can you use your passions and talents
to meet those needs?’ Then we start looking at what careers
meet those needs, and I have them do research on
some of those.”
The Ohio Department of Education has identified the
most in-demand occupations in the state and grouped
them into 16 career “clusters” that are also discussed in
the classes.
“We look at what jobs are projected to be the most inneed
in the next 10 to 20 years, and when they research
jobs, I have them check to see if it’s a growing job or if
the number of positions for that job are fading,” Van
Dyke says.
Sander says the new Career Explorations course is
proving to be effective, and she hopes to expand it into
more schools.
“We’re constantly looking at how we can best serve
students in our partner districts,” Sander says, noting Tolles also
serves Jonathan Alder Local Schools, Dublin City Schools, Fairbanks
Local Schools, and Hilliard City Schools. “The more we can
do with seventh- and eighth- and ninth-graders to give them additional
career awareness, the better.”
“The goal is to have this program in all seven career tech planning
district school systems at some point,” says Dr. Todd Hoadley,
Tolles superintendent.
Rockin’ on the Run returns to full in-person event
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
After two years as a virtual event due to
the pandemic and one year off to rest and
regroup, organizers of Rockin’ on the Run
are excited to return this year with a fullon,
in-person extravaganza.
“We’re hoping the event is bigger and
better than ever,” said Ashley Winebrenner,
Rockin’ on the Run board member.
The 14th Annual Rockin’ on the Run, a
fundraiser benefiting pediatric brain tumor
research and awareness, will take place
from 8 a.m. to noon May 20 at St. Patrick
School, 226 Elm St., London.
The run part of the fun includes a kids’
dash at 8:30 a.m. followed by a one-mile
run/walk and a 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. Everyone
who participates receives a t-shirt and
medal. New this year, a deejay will pump
out tunes and announce the names of participants
as they approach the finish line. Visit
rockinontherun.org for registration information.
A virtual option is included.
Along with the opportunity to pound the
pavement, Rockin’ on the Run offers a morning
full of family-friendly activities. Caricaturists,
a face painter, games and bounce
houses are planned. The silent auction will
be back in its full glory with themed baskets
of goods filling tables in the school gym.
Plenty of raffle items will be up for grabs, a
50/50 raffle is planned, and several vendors
will set up shop, as well.
Every year, Rockin’ on the Run honors
area children who have battled or are battling
brain tumors. This year, organizers
will pay tribute to a total of 14 children.
“The children and families affected by
brain tumors come to our event and get to
feel normal. It’s always our goal that they
have a fun day with their families,” Winebrenner
said.
Rockin’ on the Run has another goal.
“We hope to raise $30,000. It’s the
biggest goal we’ve ever set,” Winebrenner
said.
For many years, the event’s proceeds
have gone to Nationwide Children’s Hospital
in Columbus for research purposes and
the hospital’s fun fund for patients. This
year, organizers have added a third beneficiary—Books
4 Brains.
Books 4 Brains is a collaboration of Riley
Hospital for Children at Indiana University,
Rockin’ on the Run, and an Indiana-based
non-profit that provides books to young people.
The hospital reached out to the nonprofit,
seeking books to give to young
patients that address issues related to how
the patients are feeling and what they are
dealing with post-diagnosis.
As for the Ohio-Indiana connection, Dr.
Scott Coven, a doctor in Riley Hospital’s
neuro-oncology program, once served as a
fellow at Children’s Hospital in Columbus.
He was active in Rockin’ on the Run, speaking
at the event a couple of times and participating
with his family in the run.
When the book idea came along last year,
Coven reached out to Rockin’ on the Run to
help fund the program. To his knowledge,
there are no organizations in Indiana raising
money specifically for pediatric brain
tumor research and awareness. So, he called
on his friends in Ohio.
“This is a great program that could be
helpful for any pediatric diagnosis, not just
brain tumors,” Winebrenner said.
The book program will start this spring
with 20 patients.
Even though Rockin’ on the Run did not
take place last year, the organization still
received donations from supporters and
held its annual chicken noodle dinner in the
fall. Those proceeds went to pay for parking
passes for families with children receiving
treatment at Children’s Hospital. Some of
this year’s Rockin’ on the Run funds could
go to creative, helpful solutions like this.
Go to www.rockinontherun.org to learn
more about the event. To volunteer, send
email to volunteers@rockinontherun.org. To
request a vendor application, send email to
ashley@rockinontherun.org. To donate
items for the silent auction or raffle, send
email to info@rockinontherun.org.
PEART
Gary David Peart, a loving husband, father,
grandfather, and great-grandfather,
died on Feb. 21, 2023, with his loving wife,
Mary, by his side. He was the son of John
Isaac and Ruth Pauline (Leach) Peart.
Born on the farm home in Hillsboro,
Ohio, on April 13, 1933, he was a farmer all
his life except for two years spent in the
Navy from 1955-1957, serving in the Korean
War. He loved the land and raising livestock,
showing champion cattle at the Clark
County and Madison County fairs as a
youth.
Known as the gopher in later years when
he could no longer get in his tractor at 87,
he would go for this and go for that to John
Deere for parts or hauling the fuel tank to
his sons all over Madison and Clark counties.
He loved farming with his three sons,
playing euchre with family and friends,
shuffleboard in Florida, and swinging in the
gazebo.
Gary was a member of First Presbyterian
Church of London, Madison County Farm
Bureau, and Lake Choctaw Twirlers. In addition
to farming, he also enjoyed, fishing,
square dancing, playing card games, but
most of all, cherishing time with his family.
Survivors include: his wife of 68 years,
Mary (Jenkins) Peart; sons, David (Cheri)
Peart, Tim (Gina) Peart, Jamie (Valerie)
pleased to honor senior Cole Davis
as Madison-Plains High School’s
February Student of the Month.
Students of the month are selected
by school administrators
based on their academic and extracurricular
achievement and positive
character.
Cole has a 4.008 grade point average
and he is ranked ninth in his
class. His favorite course is
anatomy. Cole has played baseball
all four years of high school. He also
has participated in powerlifting for
two years and basketball for one
year. Cole has been in the National
Honor Society for three years.
When asked to name a Madison-
Plains staff person who inspires
him, Cole named high school Cole Davis
teacher Molly Niese.
“Miss Niese (inspires me) because she always wants
the best for her students, and she is always willing to
help. She is super sweet and always puts a smile on my
face,” he said.
Regarding Cole, Niese stated, “I first ‘met’ Cole during
the early beginnings of the pandemic. He was a
sophomore taking virtual biology, and I never saw more
than a black screen staring back at me as I taught
through Google Meet. Despite this
hurdle, Cole excelled in the class
and turned in some very thoughtprovoking
work. I remember emailing
him suggesting he consider a
career in science because his work
and dedication to the class truly astounded
me.
“Two years have passed since
then, and I still feel the same way
as he sits in anatomy. At the beginning
of this year, he told me he
planned to go into medicine. Though
I think Cole would shine in any profession,
it excites me to know the
medical field will be getting such an
inquisitive, kind, and inspiring person
to join their ranks. He is truly
deserving of being selected as Rotary’s
Student of the Month, and I
cannot wait to see his further accolades
as he leaves MPHS and takes on the world.”
After graduation, Cole plans to attend Wilmington
College to become an occupational therapist. He is the
son of Heather and Glenn Davis.
Flowers are beautiful way to create ambiance
Various elements come together to complete
a wedding day visual. Floral arrangeers
Reception components
Flowers may truly shine during the reception.
They’re one of the most important
components when decorating the space.
Flowers serve as centerpieces, so the guest
list and the number of tables will dictate
how many centerpieces are required. These
centerpieces can be elaborate or simply a
few loose flowers in vases. Florists can customize
the look depending on couples’ budgets.
Some additional reception flowers can
include installations on arches or on anything
hanging like a floral backdrop for
photo opportunities.
Tips and tricks
Couples should create a list of everywhere
they would like to use flowers and
present it, along with magazine clippings or
planning boards, to show florists what they
have in mind. It’s important to set a strict
budget so florists can present ideas that are
in line with what couples can spend. Many
expensive looks can be replicated with inseason
flowers or less costly alternatives.
Planning a wedding requires
making many different
decisions. The choice of
wedding attire is among the
most crucial decisions that
couples must make.
Whether the wedding is traditional
or customized to
suit couples’ personalities,
brides and grooms want to
look their best when they
say, “I do.”
Many brides-to-be spend
a significant amount of time
looking for their ideal wedding
dresses. What defines
the right gown depends on personal preference
and is unique to the person doing the
search. For example, a dress that sets a
fairy tale scene for one bride may not necessarily
align with the tastes of another. The
average bride-to-be tries on try three to
seven dresses before finding the right one.
The following tips can help those shopping
for dresses find a look that makes their big
day even more special.
• Arrive with a firm budget
Weddings can be costly. It’s important to
set a budget for the wedding dress just as
you will with other expenses. There are
plenty of dress designers across a wide spectrum
of price points. A willingness to consider
and ultimately purchase a less costly
dress can help you stay on budget.
Browsing through magazines and looking
online can provide wedding dress inspiration,
as well. Also, when in doubt, defer to
the experts at bridal shops
who have experience choosing
dresses that brides are
inclined to love.
• Try a bit of this and
that
Don’t go into a wedding
dress appointment with
firm parameters. Although
you may have a ball gown
style in mind, after trying
on other options something
with a less voluminous silhouette
may actually catch
your eye. Many brides also
automatically defer to strapless
gowns, when various straps and sleeves
can be appealing.
• Don’t get hung up on perfection
Many brides get caught up as they
search for the one dress they consider perfect.
No dress is likely to check every box.
Getting hung up on a desire to find a dress
that has it all may make it hard to see the
beauty in other dresses. Remember, with
the talents of an experienced tailor or seamstress,
most dresses can be tweaked to suit
your vision of the ideal gown.
• Consider the season
Getting married during the hazy and
humid days of summer is an entirely different
experience than tying the knot during
the heart of winter. The fabric of the wedding
dress should complement the season,
whether it’s lightweight and breezy for a
warm day, or more substantial and cozy
when darting to the ceremony in snowfall.

PAGE 10 - MADISON MESSENGER - February 26, 2023
I have to admit I have not stayed up-to-date with the latest happenings
in the Marvel cinematic universe. After the release of more
than 40 Marvel films and television shows in 15 years, I am a bit
tired of this world. But, I also have to admit I always keep my eyes
open for anything and everything related to the “Ant-Man” franchise.
Ever since the shrinking superhero series debuted in 2015, it has
stood apart. I think that’s because it centers around an average guy.
Or, in this case, an ex-con named Scott Lang who temporarily gains
superpowers after he accidentally dons a suit that shrinks him to
ant-size with the push of a button. Played by the affable and charming
actor Paul Rudd, Scott’s adventures in and out of the suit have
made these films that are full of low stakes, fun hijinks, and shiftsin-scale
camera shots something to look forward to.
When I heard “Ant-Man” was getting his third solo film, I was
excited even though the Marvel fatigue had set in. When I heard
the film was going to kick-start phase five of bringing every single
Marvel comic book character to life on the big screen (that might be
a slight exaggeration), my excitement waned. I knew this probably
meant Marvel Studios had taken over the “Ant-Man” franchise in
service of the greater Marvel machine. And that is exactly what
happened with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
Gone are the fun hijinks, the quirky personalities, and the laidback
feel of the first two Ant-Man films. Instead, we get a proper
Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, complete with high stakes,
intense drama, copious battle scenes, lore and villainy to sustain
the next decade of Marvel film and television properties. The only
thing that saves this film or makes it worthwhile to watch are the
performances by the main cast and the warrior ants.
When the awkwardly titled film begins, we learn Scott has been
on quite the tear in the years since helping save the world from
Thanos. His tear nowadays is not helping people, technically, but
rather touring the country to sell his memoir. The book recounts
his transition from an ex-con to an Avenger whose idea sparked the
www.madisonmessengernews.com
Marvel uses latest ‘Ant-Man’ film to plan for future
time heist that restored billions
of lives during the Infinity Battle.
While Scott is proud of his
accomplishments, his 18-yearold
daughter Cassie (Kathryn
Newton) is less than impressed
by this latest version of her father, believing he should
still be “looking out for the little guy.”
Since taking up the little-guy cause herself, Cassie
has gotten into trouble with the law. After her latest
arrest at a protest for homeless rights, Cassie and her
dad get into an argument. They then get sucked into
the Quantum Realm, a subatomic world under the
Earth filled with beauty, mystery, and dangerous creatures.
Along for the ride are Scott’s superhero romantic
partner Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly)
and her parents Janet van Dyne and Hank Pym
(Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Douglas).
One of the most dangerous creatures in this strange
new world is Kang the Conqueror (a fantastic Jonathan
Majors), a time traveler who had laid waste to much of
the Quantum Realm. Trapped there for decades, Kang
is eager to travel into a different timeline because there
is so much to see, so much to conquer, so much to destroy.
Naturally, it falls on Scott and his not-so-merry
band of troublemakers to ensure that Kang does not get
out.
The decisions Marvel Studios executives make often
confuse me. The introduction of
Kang the Conqueror in the
“Ant-Man” series is a real headscratcher.
Kang’s presence creates
a tonal imbalance
throughout the film, especially
when Scott and Kang meet and
eventually battle. I guess that’s
what happens when you shoehorn
a bunch of lore and heavy
action into a movie franchise
that has always been light on
both.
“Quantumania” relies too heavily on computer generated
imagery and action to get points and plots across.
It did not have to be this way. Marvel Studios should
have trusted director Peyton Reed and writers Jeff
Loveness and Jack Kirby to come up with something inventive
that fit in the previously established “Ant-Man”
framework. Instead, Marvel executives ended up making
a very sad “Ant-Man” experience for this fan. Good
thing we had the charming presence of Rudd and the
talent of Pfeiffer and Majors to make up for all that it
lacked.
Swierz nominated to West Point
Rep. Mike Carey (left) and Major General John Harris (right) congratulate
Madison County resident Zachary Swierz on his nomination
to the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
Rep. Mike Carey of Ohio nominated
Zachary Swierz of Madison County to the
United States Military Academy in West
Point, N.Y. Swierz is the son of Gary and
Terri Swierz and attends Bishop Ready
High School in Columbus.
“One of the greatest honors I have as a
congressman is to nominate ambitious
young men and women across Ohio’s 15th
Congressional District to the United States
Service Academies,” Carey said. “It is encouraging
to see a younger generation with
a drive to serve their country and, having
spent time with these students and having
learned of their accomplishments, I feel rest
assured that the future of our military is in
great hands.”
In pursuit of a nomination to a U.S. military
academy, students submit their application
and are interviewed by Carey’s
Military Academy Review Board. The board
evaluates the students on academic performance,
leadership ability, and community
involvement.
To receive a service academy nomination
from Carey, candidates must be an unmarried
resident of Ohio’s 15th Congressional
District, a United States citizen, and between
the ages of 17 and 23. Qualified persons
interested in pursuing a nomination to
one of the United States Service Academies
can visit www.carey.house.gov for more information
or contact Carey’s office at (614)
Respect for
the U.S. flag
As I drive around the London, West Jefferson,
and Choctaw Lake areas, it does my
heart good to see all the flag poles flying the
American flag (a.k.a. Old Glory). However,
it is very disappointing and disrespectful at
what terrible condition many of those flags
are in: tattered, ripped, torn, etc.
Please, if your American flag is damaged,
retire it and hopefully replace it with
a new one. To correctly retire an American
flag, you can contact any American Legion
post or Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Additionally,
there is a drop box available in
downtown West Jefferson at the corner of
East Main Street (Route 40) and North Center
Street to drop off your American flag to
have it properly retired.
For a list of flag drop-off locations that
can be found around the country, visit
https://www.usflagstore.com/flag_disposal_s/2241.htm/.
