16 | 01907 ROOSEVELTS, continued from page 11 Coverage of the event began months before the wedding actually happened. “After the announcement was finally made and the date set, preparations for the president’s visit began,” the article said. “A press center was located in Town Hall. Newspapers for days carried story after story on the upcoming event.” Articles on the wedding also kept coming after it was over. One such article was about the cake from a Boston newspaper. The headline read, “Big supply of wedding cake fails.” “Five hours the Roosevelt-Clark wedding reception lasted yesterday. Each moment of these five hours had its own individuality, and each little group its newsworthy importance, for gathered inside the small area of the Nahant Country Club, circumscribed by a makeshift ring of fence, were 800 of the nation’s most prominent men and women,” the article said. This article went over even the smallest details of the wedding, including the fact that there wasn’t enough wedding cake for all the guests and that the president, who was paralyzed from the waist down, was “tired from standing.” Some articles wrote about the gowns that were worn by the bride and bridal party. “The bride’s gown was fashioned of some 20 yards of the organdy to which countless yards of narrow white ribbon, satin-faced on one side and dull on the other, were appliqued in leaf pattern,” one article said. “The neck was square cut across the bust line where it formed a heart shaped vestee partly concealed by a bow of organdy.” Another aspect of the wedding the papers printed was a map of Nahant showing the locations of the wedding, including where the president’s yacht would be docked. Pictures of the bride and groom, the first couple, and wedding guests flooded the pages of these newspapers that covered the event. In some of the pictures you can even see the large crowds that gathered on the side of the road to catch a glimpse of the president and the newlyweds as they drove by.
