EDUCATION AND TRAINING | PEOPLE
DR LEON FOURIE
business division lead, wintec – toi ohomai
Dr Leon Fourie is passionate
about seeing people reaching
their educational goals. With
a wealth of knowledge and
experience in tertiary education
management, Leon has
recently expanded his role of
Chief Executive of Toi Ohomai
to become the Wintec and
Toi Ohomai Business Division
Lead for Te Pūkenga, the New
Zealand Institute of Skills and
Technology.
Te Pūkenga is the unification of Institutes of Technology
and Polytechnics and Industry Training Organisations across
Aotearoa, forming the largest vocational and applied education
provider in New Zealand. Bringing together on-line, on-campus
and in-work learning into a single network of provisioning.
Leon is known for his deep commitment to the Bay of Plenty
and now Waikato and acknowledges his role has a definitive
impact on the success of the people in these areas. He is
excited by what Te Pūkenga will deliver in terms of reducing
barriers to education. When he is not working you could bump
into Leon as he walks his dog, Charlie, on Pāpāmoa beach or
when he is out on the ocean catching a feed.
ANDREA SHAW
franchisee & training director, dale carnegie
Andrea Shaw is the franchisee
and training director of Dale
Carnegie BOP Waikato.
Dale Carnegie was established
in 1912 and has operated in New
Zealand since the early 60’s with
Andrea and her husband Michael
starting the BOP and Waikato
business in 1997.
Andrea grew up in the far
north and spent her free time
riding and playing polocrosse,
representing Northland. She completed a Horticultural
Science degree at Massey, worked for Telecom and Ubix
before the Dale Carnegie opportunity arrived.
Andrea quickly became certified in all the Dale Carnegie
curriculums and became a certified digital online trainer just
prior to Covid. Andrea is one of only 35 “Carnegie Masters”
responsible for the quality and certification of 3000 trainers
around the world.
“It has been a busy time in business, while raising my
daughter and finding time for my passion of riding.
If a participant is excited about their personal and
professional transformation, but can’t remember that much
about me, then I have done my job!”
EXCLUSIVE
BOP BUSINESS LEADERS SHARE THEIR
VIEWS ON THE STATE OF OUR INDUSTRIES
In this final 2022 edition we wrap-up by
reaching out to industry leaders across the
Bay of Plenty and asking them how they feel
businesses have coped with the challenges
of 2022. They outline their expectations for
the new year ahead – the prospects and
the challenges – and in this issue they also
talk about how they expect businesses to be
performing a year from now.
Their comments feature in
Thought Leaders 2022, pages 10-34.
