CAN’T GET SURGERY
Waiting
list crisis
• By Susan Sandys
SURGERY delays are holding
up the recovery of a man
almost killed in a fiery
explosion in his driveway.
Kevin Burney, 61, this month
marked one year since the
accident, which resulted in
burns to 70 per cent of his body.
While he is happy with
how he has healed, he is
frustrated and angry two
consecutive surgeries planned
at Christchurch Hospital have
been delayed.
The two surgeries will follow
several skin graft operations
Burney had prior to returning
home from hospital in July last
year.
They will be to free up
movement in his elbows,
focused on skin and bone in
the joints. The first was planned
for January and has now been
delayed to June.
FOR THE first time since the
February 22, 2011 earthquake,
Christchurch’s Anzac Day
dawn service will return to
Cathedral Square.
Post earthquake, most of the
city’s Anzac Day dawn services
have been held at Cranmer
Square, and in 2020 and 2022,
they were cancelled due to
Covid-19.
It will be also the first time
the Citizens’ War Memorial
will be on show, previously
behind fences next to the Christ
Church Cathedral.
• By Tony Simons
CYCLING enthusiast and
weekend warrior Steven Dunn
has set himself a year-long
challenge – to cycle every street
in Christchurch. That’s 2700
kilometres, including Banks
Pensinsula.
The 53-year-old, who works
as a graphic designer for the city
council, said his motivation has
simply been to challenge himself
and others to explore the city,
and discourage the use of cars.
“I remember a similar challenge
by a Dunedin man who
walked every street in Dunedin,
finishing with Every St. That’s
what gave me the idea,” he said.
Dunn started six months ago
and this week he reckons he has
reached the halfway mark. To
mark the occasion, he cycled
down Stevens St in Waltham.
He hopes to be finished by the
end of the year. Very appropriately,
he intends to leave Dunn St
in Somerfield for last.
Dunn has been clocking up the
kilometres, mainly on weekends,
about two to three hours at a
time.
To add to the challenge, he
uses one of his collection
of 1970s
and 1980s bikes
on flat sections.
“I have an
old Cruiser,
a Morrison
10-speed
and a
Hudson
singlespeed
that I
use,” he
said.
Dunn
uses
GPS
mapping
to
keep track
of which
streets he
has done and
to try to cut
down on
double-ups.
“It’s phenomenal
how
many cul-desacs
there are
in Christchurch
and,
of course,
Dawn service returns to Cathedral Square
Cyclist takes on the city
one street at a time
I have to go down them all and
come out again,” he said.
He admits he has been doing
the easier sections first, including
the northwest of the city
where he lives.
“I have lived in Christchurch
for 20 years and feel like I
am only now discovering
it,” he said.
He is also complimentary
about driver
behaviour.
“It’s quieter at
weekends and I’m
in quiet streets
for the most part,
apart from a few
dogs and cats,” he
said.
The second
half of the challenge,
which
includes the eastern
and southern
suburbs, the hills
In February, the memorial
was rededicated by Princess
Anne.
The city council
is expecting
more than 15,000
people to attend
the dawn service,
which will start
at 6.30am. Mayor
Phil Mauger will
join representatives of
New Zealand’s armed
forces in laying wreaths.
Later in the morning, the
Transitional Cathedral in Latimer
Square will host the 10am
citizens’ service.
Proposed road closures are
set for Oxford Tce and the
Colombo St entrance to
Cathedral Square from
4am.
Services will also
be held around
Christchurch and
and the peninsula, is going to be
harder.
“I have got to the point now
where I have to take the car to
those places,” said Dunn.
“I am dreading the hills, and
yes I am planning to include
Banks Peninsula but that’s going
to be a big challenge and I will
have to know when to stop.
“I may end up covering
nearly 5000kms by the time I’ve
finished, because of the number
of dead-end roads and doubleups.”
PASSIONATE CYCLIST: Steven Dunn adds
Stevens St to the list of streets he’s cycled
(in red on map). He says he’s about halfway
through his trek and plans to finish on Dunn
St in Somerfield by the end of the year. ‘Then
The 31-year-old labourer, who
has interim name suppression,
was initially charged with
causing grievous bodily harm
but this was upgraded to murder
following the victim’s death on
Sunday.
The victim was assaulted
some time between 7.30pm and
7.50pm on Friday on Linwood
Police said on Sunday night he
“Our thoughts are with
said.
The alleged assailant appeared
via audio-visual-link before
Judge Jane McMeeken at the
district court on Tuesday.
The man’s lawyer Stephen
Hembrow asked the judge for a
weeks so he can take further
instructions.
He asked for his client’s
woman in the public gallery
could be heard calling out “love
Christchurch Indian Social
Monty Parti said the Indian
community has been wrapping
support around the victim’s
family.
“We all are trying to support
Death still under investigation
POLICE ARE still investigating
an unexplained death in
Hei Hei.
Armed police responded
to a Kāinga Ora house on
Gilberthorpes Rd about 12.30pm
on Tuesday.
Police blocked off the road
between Taurima and Roberts Sts.
SPCA personnel were also
seen removing a dog from the
address.
Detective Senior Sergeant
Colin Baillie said on Tuesday
night the death was being treated
as unexplained.
The area was cordoned off
while police and ESR forensic
investigators conducted a scene
examination.
A nearby resident said the
property at the centre of the
incident was visited regularly by
police.
Another resident said armed
police were at the same property
A VERDICT may never be
reached in a New Zealand Army
officer’s alleged sexual violation
case after a stay was decided.
This means the officer’s guilt
or innocence may never be
determined.
The officer, who has name suppression,
was on trial in February
at Burnham Military Camp for
the alleged assault and sexual
violation of a female colleague
following a “rough” sexual encounter
in July 2017.
He earlier pleaded guilty to
two other charges of assault for
slapping the woman in the face
in another incident and pouring
Canterbury over an alleged drug
debt.
Residents in the area said they
did not notice anything out of
the ordinary until the police
arrived on Tuesday.
Detective Senior Sergeant
Baillie said further information
will be released when it is
available.
Verdict may never be reached for army officer
Red Bull over her head. This
week the New Zealand Defence
Force confirmed its decision on
the future of the case.
“The director of military
prosecutions made the
decision to stay the charge,” a
spokesperson said.
“No further action will be
taken in relation to this.”
The officer said his life had
been “plagued” for four years by
the allegations brought against
him, limiting his ability to serve.
During the trial, a panel of
military members found him not
guilty on the third assault charge,
but were unable to decide on a
verdict for the charge of sexual
violation.
Still no progress or empathy:
• By Anna Leask and Daniel
Alvey
THE mother of a Christchurch
schoolgirl who was abducted and
murdered in 1986 is “very happy”
man who did it will remain
behind bars.
Peter Joseph Holdem, now
66, was jailed for life in 1987
for murdering six-year-old
Louisa Damodran near
Christchurch. He will remain in
jail after refusing to participate
in rehabilitative treatment and
making no progress in prison.
And he refused to attend his
own parole hearing after media
applied to attend and report on
proceedings.
Louisa’s mother Aynsley
Harwood told The Star she was
pleased that he will stay in jail.
“I think the most shocking
thing is that he had forgotten
what he did to Louisa,” Harwood
said.
Louisa Bina Damodran was
just days shy of her seventh
birthday when Holdem
kidnapped her as she walked
home from school in October
1986.
She was just 100m from home
when Holdem – who already had
an extensive rap sheet – swiped
her off the street and drove her to
the Waimakariri River north of
the city.
There, he throttled Louisa and
drowned her.
Her body was found
downstream three weeks later.
At the time of the murder
Holdem was on parole after
serving time for the 1982
attempted rape of a 10-year-old
in a Christchurch park.
He has a history of sex attacks
on children dating back to the
1970s.
Retired Detective Inspector
Mal Greibel told The Star he still
thinks about the case regularly
and was glad to see the parole
board keep Holdem behind bars.
He remains “absolutely certain”
if Holdem is released he will reoffend.
“The thing that worries me is
that if he ever gets out he will
commit another murder,” Greibel
said.
Greibel felt sympathy for
Louisa’s parents, who are left
with uncertainty every two years
when Holdem comes up for
parole.
“I feel deeply sorry for them
with the uncertainty, and
dragging up everything again.’
The Parole Board has
repeatedly refused Holdem any
release from prison since he
became eligible for a hearing in
1996, saying he is too dangerous
to the community to be freed.
His most recent hearing was no
different.
Holdem was due to appear
before the board on March 28,
but waived his right to a hearing
stating concerns about media
coverage.
The Herald had applied to the
board to attend the hearing and
report on the process, but that
was declined by Parole Board
chairman and panel convenor Sir
Ron Young.
Louisa’s killer refused parole
“Mr Holdem decided not to
appear today. He indicated that
he was concerned about the
presence of the media,” said
Young in a decision released to
the Herald after it had been sent
to the victims.
“As chairperson I had considered
an application by the media
to be present at Mr Holdem’s
hearing, but in my view, there
were exceptional circumstances
and I decided that the application
should be refused.
“Mr Holdem has been advised
of my decision but apparently
he still wishes to maintain his
waiver.”
Young said when Holdem
was last seen in 2021 he agreed
to repeat a child sex offender’s
treatment programme with a
view to beginning the reintegration
process.
However, that had not happened.
“The psychological report
provided to the board ahead of
the March hearing noted that
Mr Holdem said that he did not
think he needed any further
treatment and was not motivated
to undertake the programme,”
said Young.
“He has little real empathy
with the victims and had significant
memory limitation.
“He is assessed as being high
risk of sexual reoffending and
medium risk of violence.
“Really, since our last contact
with Mr Holdem in November
2021 no real progress had been
made.”
The board heard Holdem had
told his case manager he wanted
to reintegrate “now” and felt he
had done enough in prison to
warrant that.
He had done the child sex offender
treatment programme in
1995 and in 1997 and claimed he
had also completed “34 one-onone
sessions with a psychologist”
by 2013.
“However, after further
discussion, Mr Holdem told the
case manager that he would be
prepared to do the programme
and so he is now identified to undertake
the 2024 programme,”
said Young.
“And so, we are satisfied Mr
Holdem remains an undue risk.”
Harwood said she was glad
to see him do another child sex
offender treatment programme,
but was not sure what difference
it would make.
Young said a registered victim
of Holdem’s offending against
Louisa also spoke to the board
and firmly opposed his release.
“The deep hurt and trauma
the family suffered from Mr Holdem’s
crime has never left them,”
he said.
“We will see him again in two
years’ time, by the end of February
2025, at which time he should
have completed the programme
and we can review whether any
further rehabilitation might be
required and what reintegration
might be appropriate.”
The board would need a full
psychological report before that
hearing.
New wind turbines for Antarctica
THREE NEW wind turbines are
getting set to sail for Ross Island,
Antarctica.
The new EWT turbines have
been selected to replace the three
existing turbines that supply
renewable energy to Scott Base
and the neighbouring American
base, McMurdo Station.
The new turbines are scheduled
to sail south to Antarctica
in the summer of 2023/24. The
first turbine will be installed in
the summer of 2024/25, and the
other two the following year.
The EWT turbines will stand
at 40m tall (hub height) in the
same location as the existing
ones at Crater Hill – a small
increase in size from the existing
hub height of 37m.
Antarctica
New Zealand
chief executive
Sarah Williamson
said the new
wind turbines
are part of an
A large battery energy storage
system will also be installed and
the high-voltage network and
diesel generators at Scott Base
upgraded as part of the project.
“One of the new turbines
will generate almost as much
power as the three current ones
combined and, together with
a battery storage system, will
provide more than 90 per cent of
the electrical demand of the new
extreme wind conditions in
Antarctica while meeting the
higher energy requirements of
the new base that is due to be up
and running in 2028.
Further delays possible
for Parakiore centre
ŌTĀKARO Limited says there
may be further disruption to the
Parakiore Recreation and Sport
Centre because a subcontractor
has gone into liquidation.
The centre is due to open in
2025 – nine years later than
planned due to ground conditions
and Covid-19.
An Ōtākaro Limited spokesperson
said it was notified last
Friday that Benmax had been put
into liquidation.
Benmax had previously
worked on the city’s town hall
and its justice precinct.
It also had current contracts
for Te Kaha – Christchurch’s
new stadium – and Ashburton’s
library and civic centre.
“Benmax was contracted by
CPB (contractors) to deliver the
mechanical systems, including
heating, ventilation and air conditioning,
at Parakiore Recreation
and Sport Centre,” they said.
“Benmax was about three
quarters of the way through
its work on Parakiore. It had
substantially completed the
installation of all the ductwork,
pipework and major mechanical
plant.
“It was under way with the
finishing work that follows
plastering in the courts building
at the time of liquidation. Similar
work was yet to get underway in
the aquatics building. Benmax
would have had personnel onsite
through the remainder of the
build to commission the systems
as construction progressed,” the
spokesperson said.
They could not disclose the
value of the contract because it
was “a commercial matter between
CPB and Benmax”.
Ōtākaro Limited, the Crown
company overseeing the city’s
post-earthquake rebuild, said it
was waiting for an update from
CPB on the likely impact.
But the spokesperson said “it
is reasonable to expect this will
disrupt the construction programme”.
The city council’s Te Kaha
project delivery chief executive
David Kennedy said it was aware
Benmax had gone into liquidation.
“The council has contracted
BESIX Watpac to design and
construct Te Kaha, and BESIX
Watpac had employed Benmax
to deliver Te Kaha’s mechanical
services,” he said.
“Although this sub-contractor
had begun some detailed design
work, the delivery of this work
on-site was not scheduled to
begin for at least six months,
and BESIX Watpac believes the
works can be delivered without
impacting the opening date.”
Benmax has been approached
for comment.
Surgery delays prevent burns
victim from returning to work
• From page 1
Until he has these surgeries,
Burney can not lift his arms
above his head and needs help
with basic tasks such as getting
dressed, combing his hair and
shaving.
He also can not return to his
job as a printer in the city.
“It’s a bit disappointing,
because you really want to get
this over with and get on with
your life,” Burney, who lives in
Darfield, said.
“I would have been back to
work about now, but because of
that delay it’s going to be August
or something like that.”
Burney said the longer he
stayed away from his job, the
more he feared his employer
would not be able to hold the
position open for him.
He had worked there for more
than 30 years, and wanted to
stay in order to retain financial
security for himself and wife
Amanda leading into retirement.
“If I don’t go back to work, it
would impact our future,
it would not be as secure,”
Burney said.
“I have no intention of retiring,
I have always been active and
work is a big part of my life.”
Burney said when told his
surgery was being delayed, there
had been no specific reason
given. He and wife Amanda
suspected it was due to hospital
workforce shortages, as had been
reported in the media.
Te Whatu Ora Waitaha
confirmed theatre capacity in
Canterbury is reduced to match
the anaesthetic technician
workforce, with initiatives to
solve this not expected until the
end of this month.
A spokesperson would not
comment on Burney’s case
specifically, but said surgical
teams were delivering 70-75
per cent of normal planned
care targets, with a 50 per cent
reduction in some specialities.
“Surgeons in Christchurch
are having to prioritise patients
waiting for surgery every day,
with only the most urgent
cases going ahead and some
patients have had to be
deferred at short notice,” the
spokesperson said.
Burney suffered burns to
70 per cent of his body when
a metal drum he was using
a grinder on in his driveway
exploded in flames on April
2, last year. He was rushed
to Christchurch in a critical
condition, and airlifted to
Middlemore Hospital in
Auckland.
The first four weeks were in
intensive care, where doctors
said they had not seen burns as
severe since those they treated
from the deadly White Island
eruption. They did not know
whether Burney would survive
as he battled for his life. One of
his lungs collapsed, he suffered
an infection and his heart
stopped during surgery.
Burney’s family were overjoyed
when he made enough progress
to be taken out of intensive
care, moving to the hospital’s
specialist burns unit on April 30.
He spent eight weeks in
the burns unit, undergoing
several skin graft surgeries.
The surgeries were nine-hour
marathons involving three
surgeons, where skin was taken
from unburned areas of his
tummy and buttocks, to be
grafted onto the burned areas
of his torso, arms, hands,
and the front and back of his
thighs.
When he returned home, he
had to wear a compression suit,
and dressings covered his back,
chest and arms. Now his skin
has mostly healed, with just
two dressings remaining on his
upper arms.
Burney said he and Amanda
were enjoying life, having
taken a family trip to Australia
in November and a couple of
weekend vacations in their
caravan. He had also got back
into his passion of running,
having done some “light
jogging” near his home.
Overall he and Amanda felt
positive about his recovery,
which was being aided by district
nurse visits three times a week to
reapply dressings, and a
physiotherapist visiting twice
a week. “I’m fine, I have got a
good team of support that come
around, and work with me.”
Call for cellphone tower to be moved
• By Heidi Slade
REDCLIFFS residents are calling
for a cellphone tower to be
relocated.
Digital infrastructure company
FortySouth has begun upgrades
to the tower on Beachville Rd and
the Christchurch Coastal Pathway,
which involves installing a
new tower less than a metre away
from the existing site.
But locals and community
organisations say the new tower,
which is more than twice as wide
as the existing one, should be
relocated.
“That tower will dominate all
the views,” Redcliffs resident
Zara Fleming said.
“This is a really special place so
it deserves special consideration.”
Work to upgrade the existing
tower, built in 2003, began in late
March.
The tower will be the same
height as the existing one, and
will remain in the same area,
FortySouth head of external
affairs Lisa Mulitalo said.
“The cell site . . . will not extend
any further into the footpath
than the existing equipment,”
Mulitalo said.
However, it will be wider. The
existing pole has a diameter
of 11.4cm. The new pole has a
diameter of 27.3cm.
“We have selected the slimmest
pole possible to structurally
support the new equipment,”
Mulitalo said.
Work is currently on hold until
April 20, so FortySouth and One
NZ can communicate plans to
nearby residents, as they failed to
do so in an initial letter.
“Detailed plans were not
initially shared with neighbours,
but that has now been done and
we have apologised for not doing
this when we first wrote to them,”
Mulitalo said.
In the new letter sent to
residents, FortySouth provided
an email address for queries and
feedback.
But Redcliffs residents are
calling for FortySouth to
consider alternative locations
for the upgrade and to carry out
consultation.
“We would be disappointed to
see (the current tower) getting
more obtrusive,” Redcliffs
Residents’ Association secretary
Pat McIntosh said.
Pat
McIntosh
Hanno
Sander
The association was alerted to
the details of the upgrade by a
resident on Saturday, April 1.
“Before then we only knew
works were happening,”
McIntosh said.
“The company is quite correct
to say they can rebuild where
they are . . . we’re just asking
them to consider other options.”
Fleming, who lives nearby,
sought out more information
after receiving a letter in her
mailbox stating there would be
an upgrade.
She said an installation crew
arrived on Thursday, March 30.
She said she was told by the
crew the tower would only be
slightly wider.
When the new pole was bought
to the site, Fleming thought it
was massive.
“I thought, that’s not slightly
wider, it’s huge,” she said.
After seeing the size of the new
tower, Fleming and her husband
did some research. She said the
dimensions for the upgraded
tower had been left off paperwork
sent to the city council.
“You couldn’t tell how much
bigger it was going to be,” she
said.
Like the resident’s association,
Fleming is asking FortySouth to
investigate other locations.
She also thinks the company
should have consulted the
community and residents.
“If you’re a private company
using public land, you have
a responsibility to properly
consult with the people affected,”
Fleming said.
City council head of planning
and consents John Higgins
said consultation is usually the
responsibility of the operator.
“Sometimes, if the cell
tower significantly exceeds
the standards, then formal
consultation is undertaken under
“This wasn’t the case here.”
The Christchurch Coastal
Pathway Group moved a
unanimous motion at a meeting
last Tuesday, put forward by
CCPG chair Hanno Sander:
“That the Christchurch Coastal
Pathway Group’s key objective
is to promote the creation of
a 4m wide shared pathway
which includes the Beachville
Esplanade.
“CCPG was not consulted on
the proposed changes to the cell
tower, which will block a large
section of the pathway. Our
position is that the placement of
any structures on the pathway is
unacceptable.”
Sander said the group’s main
concern was structures built on
the path.
“We don’t want structures built
on the pathway blocking the path
of users,” he said.
The cellphone tower upgrade is
part of a nationwide programme
FortySouth has been carrying
out over the last couple of years.
It has been both upgrading and
building new towers throughout
New Zealand, as well as
working on other sites in
Christchurch.
A CHRISTCHURCH-developed
video game about fishing is
making waves overseas.
But Dredge isn’t a relaxing day
out on the water. This fishing trip
has a “sinister undercurrent,” its
developer says.
“The elevator pitch for Dredge
is a ‘cosmic horror fishing adventure,’
it appears to be a cosy
fishing simulator on the surface,
but very quickly you realise there
are other things going on,” said
programmer and writer Joel
Mason.
“The spookiness just feels
right, because the ocean is kind
of terrifying and unknowable.”
A week after its release, Black
Salt Games’ first project was
already a massive success. With
95 per cent positive reviews on
digital storefront Steam, and a
comfortable spot within several
other platforms’ top sellers
lists, Dredge far surpassed the
expectations of its four-person
development team.
Mason, studio manager Nadia
Thorne, lead artist Alex Ritchie
and 3D animator Michael
Bastiaens, took a risk when they
left the safety of a large studio to
begin their passion project two
years ago.
“The whole idea was just to see
if we can actually make a game
that gets out there and is played
by a few people,” Bastiaens said.
“To see it go as crazy as it has,
it’s been pretty awesome.”
The team thought a fishing
game with a horror atmosphere
would be
too
niche
to succeed.
Instead,
Dredge’s unique premise hooked
gamers around the world.
“The reception and the
response has blown all of our expectations
and even our dreams
out of the water,” Mason said.
He said game development
was a risky business, and the
decision to build a game from
scratch was not made lightly.
Video games are often
developed by large teams with
dozens of staff, but Black Salt
Games said their small size had
unique benefits.
“We get to move pretty
quickly, like if we want to change
direction or try something new,”
Ritchie said.
“Another benefit is that there’s
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Global players hooked on fishing game
less heads talking in a room at
any given time, so we can make
design decisions a lot quicker,”
Bastiaens said.
Mason
said it was
not easy
splitting
an entire
project
between just four people.
“The challenge is how much
we can achieve with the hours
we have in the day.
“We try to be really careful
about keeping the scope of the
game manageable, not making it
into a 10-year project.”
Thorne said keeping the team’s
expectations in check was vital
for the project to succeed.
“I think being in the industry
for a while meant we were
really realistic about what was
likely achievable with the first
title from our own studio,” she
said.
“So we went in armed with
that knowledge and everything
we did was to just try and
increase the chances of Dredge
being a success.”
A week after its release Dredge
had surpassed the expectations
of its Black Salt Games’ development
team.
After a whirlwind week, the
team was thinking about the
future. Should they work on
further updates to Dredge? A
sequel? Or should they start
something entirely new?
Thorne said their first order of
business would be to address any
bugs, glitches and flaws discovered
by Dredge’s unexpectedly
large playerbase.
“Immediately it’s about
making sure Dredge is fully
supported and our players feel
how appreciative we are for their
response,” she said.
Bastiaens said next week’s plan
was to do a breakdown.
“We’ve got a couple of ideas
of where we could take things,
whether it’s more Dredge or
something else entirely.”
Following two years of intensive
work on Dredge’s oceans,
the team felt inclined to change
course.
“I think Alex is kind of done
with fish for a while,” Bastiaens
said.
“Yeah, (he drew) 128 fish
illustrations,” Mason said.
“We got there in the end,”
Ritchie said.
Airport pipe-dream makes
A Tarras
airport is
a ‘nut-bar
idea’, says
Canterbury
Mornings
host on Newstalk ZB
Christchurch John
MacDonald
IT JUST doesn’t make sense in
any way, shape or form for the
city council’s airport company
to keep up this pipe-dream of
building another airport in
Central Otago.
Tarras is the location. And
you’ll remember how a few
years back the airport company
bought a fair bit of land down
there – 750 hectares.
But it wasn’t until media got a
whiff of it that it announced – or
was forced to announce – its
plan to set up another airport
to service Queenstown and
Wanaka.
It wants a slice of the action
from that market, which I can
kind of understand.
And if Queenstown and
Wanaka airports can’t be
extended, then I can see why
some people would think
building another one nearby is
the answer.
And, to be honest, until now
PROTEST: Activists from the ‘350 Christchurch’ climate crisis movement made a
submission on the Tarras airport plan at last week’s city council meeting.
I’ve never really felt strongly
either way. Until now.
Unlike those who are
concerned about the whole
environmental thing and think
it’s nuts to be building more
airports and aren’t happy about
how this thing could impact the
natural environment at Tarras.
Aviation, of course, is in the
gun big time when it comes to
climate change.
And some in the aviation
sector are responding.
For example, Schiphol Airport
in Amsterdam – which is one
of the world’s busiest airports –
announced last week that it was
going to ban private jets from
using the airport, reduce hours
and scrap a plan to build a new
runway.
Christchurch Airport, though,
wants to build a whole new
airport – about 400km from the
city it serves.
And 400km from the city that
its owners – the city council –
want more people to come to.
The environmental people who
aren’t happy with Christchurch
Airport’s plan to expand into
central Otago are really ramping
things up at the moment, too.
Turning up at city council
meetings with their ‘No New
Airports’ banners. They’re doing
the same down south with the
Otago Regional Council and
Central Otago council.
But the reason I’ve had this
realisation that this new airport
is a nut-bar idea, comes from
ChristchurchNZ’s intention
to market Christchurch to the
world as the City of Play.
And how there’s going to be
this big effort to shift peoples’
thinking of Christchurch as a
gateway to the rest of the South
Island. And, instead, promote it
as a destination in itself.
So, why on earth would you
want to build another airport –
400km away from Christchurch
– if you want this place to be the
destination, not just part of the
journey?
Well, you wouldn’t. Unless
you’re Christchurch Airport,
which wants to make it easier
for more people to skip across
the Tasman and completely
avoid Christchurch, at the same
time as the local tourism agency
is trying to get people to stop
using Christchurch as a stepping
stone and to treat it more as a
destination.
And what makes this situation
particularly oddball, is the fact
both these organisations – the
tourism agency and the airport
– both of them are owned by the
Christchurch City Council.
PLAN: Christchurch Airport wants to build a whole new
The airport, by the way, is
75 per cent owned by the city
council. The Government has a
25 per cent stake in it. So, for all
intents and purposes, the city
council owns and runs it. Just
like it owns ChristchurchNZ.
ChristchurchNZ has its own
board and is a bit of an armslength
operation. But there’s no
escaping the fact we have two
city council outfits completely at
odds with each other.
ChristchurchNZ wants to get
more people coming here and
not treating the city as just a
gateway. The airport company
wants to make it easier for
people to fly directly to
Queenstown and Wanaka – and
avoid Christchurch altogether.
Does this seem as weird to
you as it does to me? I don’t
think it’s weird – I think it’s
nutbar. And I think the airport
company should just forget
about it.
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Add colour and joy to an autumn garden
SELECTING plants that
offer you a long flowering
season and good seasonal
choices, allows you to have
blooms throughout the
year.
Many summer flowering
perennials have finished
and now the autumn
blooming plants, such as
aster, helenium, and
chrysanthemum, are coming
into flower.
One perennial that can be
overlooked over summer is
sitting in the shadows ready to
take over. Even its name gives
it away: Autumn Joy (Sedum
spectabile).
This easy-care plant has a
lot to offer throughout the
seasons, with its combination of
architectural foliage and flowers
that are attractive to bees and
butterflies, but comes into its
own now.
Plants with succulent, thick
grey-green leaves produce large
flat heads of rich pink flowers
in autumn, ageing to a coppery
pink and eventually to a
rusty red. If left on the plants
they look great on a frosty
morning.
In spring remove seed heads
and divide and plant. Replant
in a sunny location with
well-drained soil or grow in a
container.
Time to harvest feijoas, kiwifruit
Autumn is now arriving
with many deciduous
trees displaying beautifully
coloured leaves. In
preparation for winter, there
are many tasks for the home
garden inside and out
Vegetable garden
With the ongoing increases in
vegetable prices, having a home
vegetable patch has become even
more crucial. Make the most of
whatever space you have. Think
creatively and consider growing
in containers, in vertical gardens,
or even hanging baskets – you
will be surprised at the array of
veges that can be grown like this
– particularly dwarf varieties.
Plants growing in containers
are in a confined space and are
reliant on the mix you use, so
always choose a good quality
potting mix.
For traditional gardens, what
you put in is what you get out,
so soil preparation is absolutely
vital. Incorporate a mixture of
fresh Garden Time compost and
vegetable mix to all areas that
will be planted.
Remember to rotate crops to
different parts of the garden,
from where they were growing
last winter.
New seeds and/or seedlings
to be planted in April include
peas, radish, silver beet, spinach,
swedes, and turnips.
WINDFALL: Harvest ripe feijoas regularly from the ground.
Flowering annuals
Time to prepare and plant
winter flower beds. As with the
vegetable garden, incorporate
fresh compost along with Garden
Time enriched garden mix into
the existing soil prior to planting.
To add colour to outdoor areas
over the cooler months, plant
winter annual’s seedlings in
containers, large pots or hanging
baskets now. Position them where
you will see them regularly such
as on decks or in entrance ways.
Winter flowering annuals
include alyssum, calendulas,
cineraria, cornflower, lobelia,
nemesias, lupins (South Island
only), snapdragons, stock, sweet
william, pansy, primulas, and
violas.
Fruit harvesting and
pruning
Time to harvest late-season
apples. Feijoas are now ripe and
PHOTO: DALTONS
its best to regularly collect fruit
from the ground and not pick it
off the tree.
Kiwifruit can now be picked
and although they may still be
hard, they will ripen after being
harvested.
Early in April the last of the
passionfruit will fall to the
ground. The vines can be given
a tidy up prune before winter
arrives.
Stone fruit, peaches, plums,
and nectarines can be pruned
and then sprayed with copper
oxychloride to help protect them
against bacterial diseases.
Add a good layer of mulch to
help insulate the soil around the
trees’ roots, keeping them warm
and protected during the cold
winter months.
Perennial Garden
Many perennials can remain
undisturbed for a number
of years, but if you notice
overcrowding then plants will
need to be lifted, divided, and
replanted into different parts of
the garden.
With other perennials where
the ‘top growth’ has finished,
plants can be trimmed back to
ground level.
Garden centres usually have
a good range of perennials at
this time of the year, so it’s an
excellent month to extend or
replant the perennial garden.
Lawns
Keep fertilising existing lawns
until late April. Set the mower
a little higher as we approach
winter – this gives your lawn the
best chance to absorb sunlight
and nutrients.
Belfast and Shirley will want to
seasons last year. Belfast
managed to finish 11th after they
beat Burnside 22-18 in their final
game of the season.
Shirley were unable to finish
inside the top eight following
their plate semi-final loss against
University of Canterbury.
Belfast go into the first
round on the back of a preseason
win against Burnside,
with Jimmy Hema returning
as head coach. Shirley will be
without young lock Fitifiti Sa this
season, who has moved to the
Taranaki Bulls.
•Burnside v High School
Last result: HSOB 32,
Burnside 10
Last year’s beaten semifinalists
High School Old
Saturday. HSOB lost the semi
in an extra-time thriller against
eventual champions Sydenham.
Joff Mooar returns as head coach
of HSOB, assisted by Sione Lea.
After making the 2021 final,
Burnside never got going last
season and finished with a close
loss in the 11th place playoff
against Belfast.
Willie Brown takes over from
Dave Robertson as head coach of
Burnside, and will be looking to
get the club back to it’s winning
ways.
the plate final last year. Former
Sumner Storm coach Gareth
the first time.
Last result: New Brighton 15,
Lincoln University 10
It will be a battle of the Pawson
brothers on Saturday. Scott
Pawson will return as head coach
of New Brighton, while Lincoln
University have retained Jason
Pawson as co-coach alongside
Simon Livingstone.
Lincoln University will be
missing loose forward Liam
Allen, who is currently playing
for Lyon in the Challenge Cup
in France. New Brighton go into
the season on the back of plenty
of pre-season games, including
matches against HSOB, Suburbs,
Kaiapoi and Sydenham.
Both teams were last year’s
top qualifiers but beaten
preliminary-finalists so will be
looking for a better finish this
season.
•Sydenham v Marist
Albion at Sydenham Park
Last result: Sydenham 23,
Marist Albion 15
Arguably the most
anticipated match of the
round will be a rematch of
last year’s final between
Sydenham and Marist Albion.
Both Ian Robinson (Marist)
and Ben Rhodes (Sydenham)
will be leading each of their
sides once again. Sydenham
have lost Blair Ryall, Dan
Fransen and Patrick Thacker
from last year’s winning side but
will no doubt be eyeing up backto-back
titles.
Marist will be looking to reach
the final for the fourth year in
a row. Ben Blair returns to the
Marist coaching team after a
year away and will be assisted
by former player Robbie Harlow
and Ross Kennedy.
Unbeaten United, Technical
aim to extend winning runs
• By Jaime Cunningham
FOOTBALL
Christchurch United and
Cashmere Technical lead
the Southern League points
table after three rounds of the
competition.
Last season’s National League
qualifiers are the only teams to
win all three games as the 10-
team competition heads into the
fourth round this weekend.
Christchurch United will
take on Selwyn United at Foster
Park on Friday. Selwyn United
bounced back from a heavy loss
against Dunedin City Royals to
beat FC Twenty 11 1-0 on Good
Friday.
Selwyn had two goals ruled
out for offside in the match
against the Southern League
newcomers.
Christchurch will be after two
consistent halves tomorrow night
after their dominant start against
Dunedin last weekend. Leading
4-1 at halftime, Christchurch
were unable to make the most
of Dunedin being a player down
due to a red card. It wasn’t until
the 82nd minute when Sam
Philip found the net for a second
goal in the match to make it 5-1.
FC Twenty 11 and Nomads
will be after their first wins of the
season when they meet at Tulett
Park on Saturday.
Nomads got off to a strong
start against Cashmere last week,
with Caleb Johnson scoring
in the third minute before
Cashmere levelled the game
four minutes later. Although
it was close at halftime, with
Cashmere leading 3-2, Nomads
wasted chances in the first half
and couldn’t gain back control of
the match until a goal by Jacob
their first win of the campaign
against Green Island last week. It
was a scoreless second half, with
Liam Cotter netting the only
goal of the match for Coastal in
the 38th-minute.
Ferrymead Bays will be
looking to extend their unbeaten
start to the season when they
face Dunedin City Royals
in Dunedin on Saturday.
Ferrymead Bays played out a
Friday.
Coey Turipa will be a key
player for Ferrymead Bays
on Saturday after saving two
penalties against Nelson.
However, the team will need to
convert their chances against a
strong Dunedin side. Ferrymead
Bays were unable to score against
Nelson until the 83rd minute,
although they had plenty of
opportunities.
After two rounds of the
women’s South Island
Qualifying League, Nelson
Suburbs sits at the top of the
table with two wins in as many
games.
Coastal, along with Cashmere
Christchurch teams yet to lose a
The newly-merged Halswell-
The Canterbury Premier
League will return on Saturday
with plenty of squad and
coaching changes.
The women’s and men’s
competitions will play two
round-robins starting this
weekend, with Carlton Redcliffs
set to defend the Hinemoa Cup
and Marist looking to retain the
Presidents Shield following their
dominance last season.
Canterbury Hockey
competition and events manager
Sam Grimshaw said the men’s
league may be one of the most
competitive he’s seen in recent
years.
“The Black Sticks programme
was previously centralised
(all players had to move to
Auckland) but they have
decentralised, so all Canterbury
Hockey Association Black Sticks
have moved back and are playing
in Christchurch,” Grimshaw
said.
New Zealand representatives,
such as Joey Morrison (Marist),
David Brydon (HSOB Burnside),
George Enersen (Carlton
Redcliffs) and Simon Yorston
(Hornby), will all be playing in
the men’s competition.
The men’s league also sees
a large number of coaching
changes, with last season’s
assistant coaches at Carlton and
Marist stepping up to the head
coaching roles. Former Black
Sticks captain John Radovonivch
will take over from Matt Walcott
as Avon’s head coach.
In the women’s competition,
Marist will be looking to
continue their pre-season form
into the regular season following
their Porritt Cup win. Former
Black Stick and Canterbury
Cat, Kate Trolove, is the only
coaching change to the seven
women’s teams, leading HSOB
Burnside this season.
Harewood (below) are set to
defend the finals trophy after
they won three consecutive
play-off games in a week last
year to take out the women’s
competition.
All games will be played
at Nunweek Park, Nga Puna
Wai, and Marist Park on
Saturday.

HP skills and campaign coach.
The role will encompass coaching
in the FPC, Academy and
Black Ferns hub programmes.
Canterbury Rugby chief
executive Tony Smail said the
new roles are a major step for
women’s rugby.
“To be the first provincial
union to offer full-time coaching
roles reinforces our leadership,
support and commitment to the
female game,” he said.
“This will help with the player
depth here in Canterbury and
ultimately add to the pool that
Matatū and the Black Ferns have
to select from.”
Underfloor insulation
Foam insulated expanded polystyrene panels
under the concrete slab act as an insulating
barrier, stopping cold coming through from
under the house.
Garages
Insulating the garage and its door will cut
down on a steady stream of cold air sneaking
into the house. An insulated garage door can
lift the temperature substantially even when
the garage itself is not heated, making it a
more pleasant place to spend time. Any home
appliances kept in the garage will use less
electricity as they will not have to work as hard
and your car battery may last longer.
Roof design
Roof designs vary. The simplest way to achieve
a weather tight house is to have a simple
roof design with an overhanging surfeit.
Architectural flat roofs will work though more
care is needed to achieve weather tightness
especially where there are hidden or back
roof gutters. Having a roof with no overhang
also requires more care with the design due
to its complexity and potential for problems.
Regular maintenance to clean out leaves and
debris that gets caught in the roof will be
advantageous in both cases.
Porticos
Taking the roof out beyond the house is ideal
for providing a sheltered area for spending
time outdoors when the weather is inclement
Snow straps or guttering protection
Wherever snow is a likely part of winter,
throughout installation of snow Christchurch
straps a good idea.
These prevent damage to guttering from
the weight of snow as it slides off the roof.
Weatherproofing tips
for your house design
Insulation and double glazed windows are compulsory in new homes making
them infinitely superior to their older counterparts for warmth yet more can be
done to weatherproof a new home.
Low-E argon gas filled double glazing
increases insulation.
such as Gutter Guard could be fitted. This
has the added benefit of preventing spouting
blockages from leaf and other debris.
Capitalise on the sun
Maximise the sun’s free energy with plenty of
windows, especially on the north side of the
house.
Outdoor areas
When choosing a house design, consider how
it will sit on the section and whether it offers
potential to catch sun inside the home and
for sunny sheltered outdoor areas away from
prevailing winds.
Windows and doors
Upgrade on the minimum standard for
double glazing with thermally broken joinery
and low-emissivity argon gas filled windows
and doors, increasing insulation effectiveness.
Energy efficient heating
Explore heating options, selecting what will
Home & Property appears every Thursday, work best given delivered the size of FREE home and family
heating with two cassette and energy saving
