Thursday April 13 2023 The Star FOR THE first time since the February 22, 2011 earthquake, Christchurch’s Anzac Day dawn service will return to Cathedral Square. Post earthquake, most of the city’s Anzac Day dawn services have been held at Cranmer Square, and in 2020 and 2022, they were cancelled due to Covid-19. It will be also the first time the Citizens’ War Memorial will be on show, previously behind fences next to the Christ Church Cathedral. • By Tony Simons CYCLING enthusiast and weekend warrior Steven Dunn has set himself a year-long challenge – to cycle every street in Christchurch. That’s 2700 kilometres, including Banks Pensinsula. The 53-year-old, who works as a graphic designer for the city council, said his motivation has simply been to challenge himself and others to explore the city, and discourage the use of cars. “I remember a similar challenge by a Dunedin man who walked every street in Dunedin, finishing with Every St. That’s what gave me the idea,” he said. Dunn started six months ago and this week he reckons he has reached the halfway mark. To mark the occasion, he cycled down Stevens St in Waltham. He hopes to be finished by the end of the year. Very appropriately, he intends to leave Dunn St in Somerfield for last. Dunn has been clocking up the kilometres, mainly on weekends, about two to three hours at a time. To add to the challenge, he uses one of his collection of 1970s and 1980s bikes on flat sections. “I have an old Cruiser, a Morrison 10-speed and a Hudson singlespeed that I use,” he said. Dunn uses GPS mapping to keep track of which streets he has done and to try to cut down on double-ups. “It’s phenomenal how many cul-desacs there are in Christchurch and, of course, Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Dawn service returns to Cathedral Square Cyclist takes on the city one street at a time I have to go down them all and come out again,” he said. He admits he has been doing the easier sections first, including the northwest of the city where he lives. “I have lived in Christchurch for 20 years and feel like I am only now discovering it,” he said. He is also complimentary about driver behaviour. “It’s quieter at weekends and I’m in quiet streets for the most part, apart from a few dogs and cats,” he said. The city council is expecting more than 15,000 people to attend the dawn service, which will start at 6.30am. Mayor Phil Mauger will join representatives of New Zealand’s armed forces in laying wreaths. Later in the morning, the Transitional Cathedral in Latimer Square will host the 10am citizens’ service. Proposed road closures are set for Oxford Tce and the Colombo St entrance to Cathedral Square from 4am. Drivers who would usually operate routes 3, 28, 140 and 155 will attend an Amalgamated Workers Union NZ meeting. Metro said services are likely to be impacted from 10am with all services set to be operating as normal by 2pm. Use of alternative forms of transport is advised during the four-hour period. Unions are permitted to hold at least two meetings per calendar year. Any further updates will be posted on the Metro website. Warning to avoid waterways after spill Residents are being advised to avoid waterways around the Curletts Rd basin area of Wigram, opposite the A&P Showgrounds, after a chemical spill last week. Environment Canterbury was alerted to the incident at a Blenheim Rd business last Thursday in which liquid waste material was discharged. An ECan spokesperson said daily checks are being made and no wildlife has been affected so far. It also advised people to keep pets away from the area. City Mission Op Shop re-opened Christchurch City Mission reopened its new op shop on Tuesday. The new shop is located at 250 Barbadoes St next to the City Mission. The shop was located on Tuam St over the last 18 months while the City Mission site was being redeveloped.
