emergency.

THE BASICS OF MOTOCROSS
otocross is a challenging and physically demanding sport that requires
a high level of skill and athleticism. It is also a very popular sport, with many
Blue flag: This flag
cross the finish line is the winner. However, there are also rules
regarding safety, such as the use of protective gear, and
penalties for rule infractions.

THEY ARE CONCERNED FOR YOUR
SAFETY.
Motocross is a physically demanding sport that requires a combination
of skill, strength, and technique. Here are some techniques that
motocross riders may use to improve their performance on the track:
Body positioning: Riders need to maintain a proper body position while
riding, including a slight forward lean, keeping weight over the front
wheel, and keeping the elbows up to absorb the impact of jumps and
obstacles.
Cornering: Riders need to master the art of cornering, which involves
leaning the bike into the turn, keeping the inside foot peg down, and
using the throttle to power out of the turn.
Jumping: Riders need to master the technique of jumping, which
involves timing the jump, keeping the bike level, and landing smoothly.
Whipping: This technique allows riders to make the bike spin 180
degrees in the air and land facing the opposite direction.
Power sliding: This technique allows riders to maintain speed while
cornering by sliding the rear wheel.
Ruts: Riders need to learn how to ride in ruts, which are deep grooves
in the track created by the tires of previous riders. This technique
involves using the ruts to maintain traction and control while cornering.
Line choice: Riders need to learn how to choose the best line on the
track, which is the path that allows them to maintain the most speed and
avoid obstacles.
Fitness: Motocross is a physically demanding sport that requires a high
level of fitness and endurance. Riders need to maintain a regular
training regimen that includes cardio, strength training, and stretching.

SPEAKING AHEAD OF LYNG
MX1 CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER
"Lyng is 2 weeks away so there’s still
time for that. After first round all is
good but we focus for our training and
doing our best.
Yes, YZ405F changed completely for this
year. I really love the new bike, it has so
much potential. We have been working
hard on the bike to find all the small
things and make myself very
comfortable. The team has been very
supportive and so far we have done
good job and I love the new bike.
Competition is packed as it has been the
last couple years. It is good for the
championship and I enjoy it being hard
and close.
Lyng is nice, bit sandy and gets rough. So
far the layout and all jumps have been
same for many many years but not sure
if there’s changes for this year"

F A R
The Revo ACU British Motocross Championship kicked off its first round at Oakhanger in Borden, where the
top riders in the country gathered to battle it out for the top spot. The newly built sand track proved to be a
challenging one for the riders, testing their skill, determination, and speed. The next round of the
Championship was due to take place at Canada Heights, however, after careful consideration by the club and
promoters the decision to postpone the event was made. This leaves Lyng to continue the chaos that
Oakhanger revealed.
After the first round of the British Championship Harri Kullas dominated the MX1 race, leaving his competitors
behind as he took a 1-1 in the first round. Despite the best efforts of Conrad Mewse and Josh Gilbert from the
Crendon Fastrack Honda team, Kullas proved to be unstoppable as he powered his Cab Screens Crescent
Yamaha towards victory and will be a tough one to stop at Lyng, even for 2022 MX2 round winner and
championship winner, Conrad Mewse who went 1-1 at Cadders Hill in 2022.
CADDERS HILL, LYNG 23RD APRIL

In the MX2 class, Isak Gifting, Bobby Bruce, Jorgen-Matthias
Talviku, and Jake Milward battled it out on the track for the
top spot. Gifting showed incredible skill and determination as
he pushed his Gas Gas to the limit, taking home a 1-1 and
securing 50 points heading to Cadders Hill, Lyng after a late
entry at Oakhanger with the Stebbings Car Super Store
Powered by Bikesure 426 Motorsport Team. Without 2022
Champion there to stop him Isak is favourite to continue his
winning streak into Cadders Hill.
Billy Askew stole the show in the 250cc class with his bold and
aggressive riding style going 1-1, while wildcard turned
registered rider, Mckenzie Marshal put up a strong fight to
keep up. Liam Bennett also displayed impressive riding but
was ultimately unable to keep pace with the two leaders.
Askew crossed the finish line first, securing his position as a
top rider in the 250cc class. Askew will be looking to replicate
his BW85 win in 2022 finishing on the top step.
In the 125cc class, Reece Jones, Wal Beaney, and Jake Walker
took their respective places on the podium with impressive
performances in both races. Jones quickly pulled away from
the pack in race one, with Beaney putting up a valiant effort to
catch up, and Walker not far behind. Jones continued his
dominant performance in race two, crossing the line having
lapped up to fifth place in the class. Jake, who performed a
podium worthy performance in 2022 within the BW85 class is
one of this year’s favourites for the podium.
Rev up your engines and witness the ultimate display of skill
and speed! Join us to catch the top motocross riders from the
UK and Europe in action - it's a high-octane experience you
The Cadders Hill circuit will also see an additional race for the
Veteran riders. The Stebbings Car Superstore Veterans
Challenge is a support class that will run alongside the Revo
ACU British Motocross Championship at Cadders Hill, Lyng on
Sunday 23rd April. This will be for any riders aged 35 and over
and will be an open capacity class
LEE TOLAN
LEE TOLAN
In preparation for the Stebbings Car Centre Veterans Challenge at Lyng, we had
the opportunity to sit down with Lee Tolan, the owner and team manager of ASA
United GasGas Troy Lee Designs. In this interview, we discuss his thoughts and
feelings leading up to the upcoming challenge as he prepares to ride for his team.
Photo: XCast Media
How did you first get started in motocross,
and what inspired you to pursue it as a career
or hobby? I first started racing when I was 31
years old and immediately got the bug.
What has been your most memorable
experience or achievement in motocross so
far, and why?
My first achievement was winning the clubman at
the mx nationals
in 2015 and by
far my biggest
achievement in the sport is my team ASA UNITED
GASGAS.
What specific challenges do you face when riding
in events, and how do you prepare mentally and
physically to overcome them?
My biggest challenge is finding time to ride theses
day, with my team and my jobs my goal is to have
fun and not put much pressure on my self I always
give 100%
How are you approaching this event, both in
terms of strategy and mindset, and what
role does your experience play in your
approach? To have fun and take a good start.
What advice would you give to aspiring
motocross riders who are just starting
out, and how can they best prepare
themselves for the challenges of the
sport? To have fun and give it 100% effort
and the results will come.
How has motocross changed over the
years, and what trends or developments
do you see in the future of the sport?
Obviously the biggest change i have seen is
from two stroke to four stroke and the
speed they go now.
What training and conditioning have you
done to prepare for this event? Not a lot
lol the weather has stopped play so just in
the gym running and core work.
What are your goals for Lyng?
To have fun and finish every race.
How has your experience as a motocross
rider impacted your life outside of the
sport, and what lessons have you learned
CADDERS HILL, LYNG
NORFOLK
PAST,
PRESENT &
FUTURE
SUNDAY APRIL 23RD
WRITTEN BY NORWICH
VIKINGS

Welcome to Cadders Hill for a round of the 2023 Revo British Motocross Championship. Today’s
programme reflects the very best of British motocross as we welcome riders and teams from the past,
present and future! It will be interesting to note the lap times of the fastest riders in the Veterans class
against the leading lights in the current crop of stars vying for the British titles; while we get to witness
the youngsters in the 125cc/250cc youth classes as they look to stake a claim in one of the main
manufacturers teams in the next year or so.
Lyng is a venue that is steeped in history with the Norwich Viking Motorcycle Club involved in
organising motorcycle events on or around the ‘hill’ since 1936. Originally the venue was used for hill
climbs, but after the second world war they ran what were known as mountain grasstracks until the
circuit became too rough and from 1949 onwards they switched to scrambles – which of course we all
know today as motocross.
Cadders Hill is a natural hillside circuit, primarily sand based, without too many man made obstacles.
It is nonetheless spectacular, and becomes more physically demanding as the track cuts up which
really sorts out those who can, and those who think they can! History aside, the small dedicated team
from the Norwich Vikings are always looking at ways to improve the track and associated
infrastructure and the club hopes you will enjoy your day here with us in the Norfolk countryside.
After the postponement of round two of this years’
championship Harri Kullas arrives at Lyng at the top
of the MX1 standings after a perfect double win at
the opening round in Hampshire a little over a
month ago. The Cabscreens Crescent Yamaha rider
took a win and a second place at the corresponding
round here twelve months ago, but will have to be
right at the top of his game to head off Crendon
Fastrack’s Conrad Mewse who moves up to the
senior class this season. The 2023 Honda rider was
unbeatable in the MX2 class last year and his early

season form shows that he could well be on top of the podium here
this afternoon. With Mewse’s stablemate Josh Gilbert, and last year’s
champion Tommy Searle, who is returning from injury, on the GTCI
Revo Kawasaki also in the mix it promises to be a fast and furious
battle for MX1 honours.
In a typical motocross twist of fate Isak Gifting, who went head to head with Stebbings KTM
mounted Mewse for the MX2 crown in 2022, has signed a late deal to ride a Gas Gas under title
sponsorship from the same sponsor. The Swedish rider set his stall out at round one with two
victories and he will take some beating at a Lyng circuit that he really enjoys. Bobby Bruce, also Gas
Gas mounted but with the ASA United outfit, Sam Nunn on the Cabscreens Crescent Yamaha,
Dylan Walsh, fitness depending, who runs out of the GTCI Revo Kawasaki awning, and Verde Shiloh
KTM’s Jake Millward will all have a say in where the championship points are distributed at the end
of the day.

In the youth 125cc class Reece Jones, Wal Beaney and Jake Walker will lock horns again after some
terrific battles at the season opener; while Billy Askew, McKenzie Marshall, and Liam Bennett can
be expected to once again put on a top level show in the youth 250cc category.

"I’m feeling better now heading in to
Lyng on the 23rd with some more
preparations. We’ve got a good bike
already but now we have time to
hat would you say your role in the motorsport
ommunity is?
I feel like I’ve brought mx riders back together, who have
not seen each other for many years, with running my
Motocross & Speedway Memories Reunion mx meetings,
with my partner in it all Kevin Wheeler. It’s been amazing.
Both of our dads were mx dads/mechanics for us, and we
do it in their loving memory, as well as for many other
peoples special loving memories for every group, each
year.
n your opinion, what are some of the biggest
hallenges facing the sport of motocross today, and
ow do you plan to address them in your role as an
mbassador?
think some of the biggest challenges are keeping tracks
unning of course is one, as there’s been a lot that have
een closed down over the years.
own to anything from noise complaints, to mx traffic
hrough towns/villages, it’s really disappointing and been
lot of great venues lost.
nother thing is, trying to keep the sport trendy, and alive
nline for the kids that are coming through to be
nterested, or try the sport for instance.
feel some of the organisations have done well using cool
rands such as Monster and Red Bull is a great thing.
nd of course Revo is a great one to have on board for
he British championship.
How do you work with other ambassadors or
representatives of the sport to promote motocross?
To help with other people in the sport, I’ve done
photography at lots of events over the years, for free and
not charged anyone for images for instance, and post it
every where online.
You try to share other people’s media and events all the
time, and I’ve attended a lot of them these last few years,
and done lots of live videos and images, on my social
media platforms and shared them, which is all good for
exposure for the sports.
What initiatives or programs have you been
involved in as ambassador for motocross, and
what impact have they had?
I guess creating my Motocross & Speedway
Memories has affected a lot of race fans, I never
thought could be a thing. I just had a passion for the
sports, and chased the local hero’s to then the
world stars for interviews, which started out as
Q&A’s online, to then Skype recorded videos, to
then live interviews.
To share them with the fans and entertain them. I
didn’t realise it would go all over the world, and
people really enjoy them, and to get really nice
messages off fans, saying it even helped them
through difficult times in the Covid lockdown era.
That’s amazing to know. I had no idea.
Nothing was too planned I just went for it, I had no
contacts at all, and just kept working hard on asking
people, and then things went from there, and got
more and more contacts as I went.
So was super cool. And I couldn’t even explain how
crazy it is to have the contacts do in my phone, it
never gets old for me and a dream. I speak to a lot
of riders personally all the time, I’m always personal
and care about anything I do, so it’s nice. So for
fans, and even some riders told me it’s made then
keen about the sport again, and stuff like that’s it’s
incredible how much it’s effected people. I’m proud
of that and honoured.

What advice would you give to someone who is
interested in becoming involved in the sport of
motocross?
My advice to anyone wants to get involved with mx,
would be it’s all out there on social media, search it
out, get to a local race meeting/practice and check the
sport out live. As there’s nothing like live. Tv is great,
but watching live it a totally different experience, get
the smell, the atmosphere, the noise. And hopefully
people take the sport up, I did for instance after
watching my cousin race mx.
What do you believe is the most important factor
in the growth and success of motocross as a
sport?
I think to engage with the kids, who are the future of
the sport. Like I touched on before, you need to
appeal to these kids, who are on all the gadgets
known to man kind.
Any media of mx is great, lots do it now on social
media and platforms, so this all helps, as videos and
images can all look cool and appeal to youngsters.
And as I touched on earlier too, I think trying to get
trendy brands into mx would be another great way of
getting attention to the sport.
Can you share with us some of the memorable
moments or experiences you've had in motocross?
Memorable moments in the sport, would be creating
my platform and unknowingly bringing riders/fans back
together was great. Then even better creating a mx
reunion was all a follow on from that. A total pipe
dream to a reality was very surreal, and amazing to do,
we are even onto our 3rd Motocross & Speedway
Memories Reunion at the end of this month.
What are your goals for the future of motocross,
and how do you see your role as an ambassador
contributing to those goals?
I engage with the fans of mx & speedway every single
day, and sometimes to my detriment haha I reply to
every single message I get.
It’s just me, and I feel no matter what it’s about, you
try and help them, or talk about whatever the subject
is, I have made a lot of personal relationships with so
many race fans, and haven’t met 90% of them, that
I’ve likely spoken to for years, riders included.
I try to live by my dads quote he always told me
before he died back in 2015, “It’s nice to be important,
but it’s important to be nice” I even quote this about
my dad, at the end of every single interview I’ve done.
I’ve even had a logo made of it by a great lad in Pat
Stott designs. He also created my logo for my
platform too, super cool!
Did you ever ride? If so what are your best
achievements/ favourite memories etc.
Yes I raced mx, I was meant to be a speedway rider
really after my dad David Ashby & my Uncle Martin
Ashby. They both raced for my home town Swindon
Robins. I had a go at 16 and took to it straight away,
and they wanted me to sign a pro contract, but my
mum said over her dead body haha and she was the
secretary to the stadium owner. So that ended that. I
went to mx again at the weekend and won. It’s still a
regret to this day. But my parents decided no at the
time.
We finally won the BSMA finals title in 1998 in the
Expert/Amx class on 125cc, and amazing to have my
name on the trophy and a guess a british title to my
name with some of the greats that are on that trophy
was a dream.
It’s 29/30th April at Whiteway Barton in Devon, and if
anyone wants to ride or come down contact me. We
have a-lot of reminiscing to do, and of course making
cool new memories too.
Meeting my own hero’s and idols as been crazy, even
get help from them with contacts and meeting them,
has been a dream.
Racing from 1989-2000 with my dad as my mechanic
are special memories to savour for sure, even more so I
don’t have him with me. My mum was amazing as well,
she did all the lap scoring jobs, and marshalling over the
years, and washing all the kits haha forever grateful to
my parents for helping race bikes.
