Sky NavigationBefore the development of precise timekeeping and satellites, the firsttheory of “lunar distances” or “lunars,” an early means of establishing an exact time atsea, was published in 1524. A crucial step in calculating Greenwich time was for thenavigator to determine latitude and longitude using the angular distance between themoon and another celestial body. Private yacht owners continue to employ celestialnavigation, particularly for long-distance global cruising vessels since satellite navigationsystems can occasionally malfunction. Thus, it is also regarded as a necessary abilitywhile traveling outside of the visual range of land (Davidson, 2022).
