This graphic calendar charts the measurement of time by thePlanetarium’s three “celestial bodies” over the course of variousincrements of time: a day, a season, a year. It combinesa modern calendar and traditional Chinese delineations oftime, including the lunar calendar and the 24 festivals of JieQi, demarking the equal division of the calendar year basedon the Earth’s position relative to the sun. The building acts asan astronomical instrument, tracking the movements of theEarth, the moon and the path of the sun in the sky. Specialfestivals - Chinese New Year, the autumn moon festival, thesummer solstice - are marked in or on the building in a varietyof ways: registrtion marks, alignments of figures cast bythe sun, completion of geometric shapes defined by sunlight,framing of the full moon.The result is a continually changing experienceof the building through the three celestialbodies, which synchronize with eventsthroughout the year.
