...66It is said that the first appearancesof the famous Hailey’s comet were documentedby the Babylonians (7 AncientCultures and how they shaped Astronomy,2018).From the tablets of the Babyloniansto the development of Astrology andthe Zodiacs, Mesopotamia is credited withmany achievements in the Sciences, especiallytheir study of the cosmos (Gleiser,2022).They looked at the stars and createdpatterns. They noticed how some lightsin the sky moved differently than others,establishing an association between thestars and religion. A scribe in the earlythird millennium BC, in the city of Uruk,was able to deduce that the day and nightstars were the same; a piece of knowledgethat hadn’t been discovered for another2,000 years in Europe (Steele, 2019).The ancient Mesopotamians werealso able to form ideas about the solarsystem. They understood this throughobserving the recurring presence of theplanets that were visible to the naked eye,which were Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars,and Saturn with the inclusion of the moonand Sun. This knowledge resulted in thecreation of a calendar of sorts..
