Paddle to the metal 

on the lake – and surf

DYLAN MONK only took up 

flatwater kayaking to keep fit 

for surf life saving. 

But the 16-year-old is now 

one of New Zealand’s most 

promising sprint kayakers with 

15 national, Oceania and Asia 

Pacific titles 11 months after 

taking up the sport. 

“I only really started 

kayaking over the winter to 

improve my fitness and my 

paddling for surf ski,” the 

Shirley Boys’ High student said. 

“I got into it through surf 

life saving, which I’ve done for 

seven years.” 

The South Brighton surf life 

saver won the under-17 surf ski 

event at the Canterbury surf 

life saving championships in 

February – while training for 

sprint kayak events. 

Monk, who represents Arawa 

Canoe Club, had 20 podium 

finishes across under-16 and 

under-18 events at the New 

Zealand and Oceania canoe 

sprint championships and Asia 

Pacific Sprint Cup on Lake 

Karapiro two weeks ago.

Two buyers go head-to-head for 

‘family perfect’ character home

THE OWNERS of a character 

home in Strowan where 

properties don’t hang around 

for long netted an almost extra 

$100,000 after two buyers went 

head-to-head for the property 

just two-and-a-half weeks after it 

hit the market. 

The auction for the “family 

perfect” four-bedroom, twobathroom 

home on 

Brenchley Ave was brought 

forward after an acceptable 

offer of $1.419 million 

was made. 

But that offer was 

knocked out last week 

when another buyer 

bid against them and 

eventually won the 

property for $1.505m. 

The two bidders battled it out 

with bids of around $10,000 and 

then later in smaller increments 

of several thousand dollars each. 

It was secured with a final $5000 

bid. 

Bayleys listing agent Sara Ashcroft 

said it was an outstanding 

result. 

“Both the owners and the buyers 

are really happy.” 

The bungalow had been 

popular with families due to the 

great school zoning and location, 

as well as couples wanting to 

retire into the area. 

“You had a bit of a crosssection 

there, but there was 

strong interest from people 

coming in,” said Ashcroft. 

A lot of the properties in the 

area were family homes, but 

people tended to stay in them 

throughout their 

children’s schooling as 

it was zoned for both 

Christchurch Boys’ and 

Christchurch Girls’ 

High Schools. 

“Things through 

there sell. Things that 

work for family homes 

they come up and they 

sell. Very seldom are 

they hanging around 

unless someone’s got totally 

unrealistic expectations, but they 

are sought-after, and they sell.” 

Last month a five-bedroom, 

three-bathroom home on 

Westall Lane in Avonhead 

broke the record for the suburb 

when the out-of-town owners 

paid $2.2m for the property 

to be their family home at 

auction.

Architectural festival includes 

opening doors to the northwest 

OPEN Christchurch, the 

annual festival of architectural 

excellence, returns to celebrate 

the city’s architecture this 

weekend, with several buildings 

from the northwestern suburbs 

featured. 

This year’s festival, presented 

by Te Pūtahi Centre for Architecture 

and City Making, 

showcases its largest selections of 

buildings to date. 

Among the 50 buildings in the 

programme are two Merivale 

Warren and Mahoney-designed 

residences, a nod to the architectural 

partnership’s legacy. 

Both Schneideman House and 

the R C Webb flats booked out 

within hours, with attendees 

keen to have a nosey behind 

closed doors and experience the 

masterful layout, simple use of 

material and generosity of space 

that Warren and Mahoney are 

renowned for. 

Other buildings in the area are 

among the 33 in the programme 

where no bookings are required 

– visitors can just turn up on 

the day. The superb Centennial 

Chapel at St Andrew’s College 

(Architectus, 2016) blends a 

contemporary look with heritage 

elements and references the early 

V huts that served as churches 

in the European settlement of 

the city. Architectus principal 

Jane Rooney will be leading free, 

walk-up tours on Saturday at 

11am and noon for those wanting 

to find out more. 

Further up the road in Papanui, 

Te Ora Hou Ōtautahi 

offers a very different experience 

on Saturday and Sunday, 10amnoon. 

This is a chance to understand 

how community can be 

facilitated through values-driven 

design, on a very tight budget, 

at this kaupapa Māori youth organisation. 

Tours with the team 

take you through the site and 

end with a chance to chat with 

designer Amiria Kiddle in the 

wonderfully carved whare. 

Finally, at 866 Colombo St, 

a rare example of a building 

commissioned for women, 

by women, stands. The Rose 

Historic Chapel, designed by the

Luttrell Brothers, is filled with 

stunning stained glass windows

reconstruction. Free talks about 

the building’s historical and cultural 

significance take place on 

Saturday and Sunday at 10am. 

In an effort to open the city to 

more people during the festival, 

Te Pūtahi has worked with partners 

in the disability sector and 

appointed an accessibility advisor. 

The 2023 programme has 

improved accessibility information 

for all 50 buildings on offer. 

Apart from a handful of limited 

entry buildings and guided 

walks (which are $5 plus booking 

fees), Open Christchurch is free. 

The programme includes more 

than 30 activities – talks, tours 

and exhibitions.

Young kayaker sets 

sights on Olympics

“It was such a good experience. 

Hopefully I can just continue 

with it,” the Shirley Boys’ High 

student said. 

The four-day event saw Monk 

represent Arawa and New Zealand 

against competitors from 

New Zealand, Singapore, Japan 

and Australia. Alongside eight 

national titles, Monk also won the 

16-and-under K1 (single) 500m, 

K1 200m and K4 (four-person) 

200m races at the Oceania championships, 

and the K1 500m and 

K4 200m for New Zealand in the 

Asia Pacific Sprint Cup. 

Although Monk always believed 

some of his team boats 

would do well, he was surprised 

by some of his personal results. 

“In some of the individual ones, 

like the 500m, and especially the 

(individual) 200m race, I didn’t 

expect to win,” he said. 

Monk also won a national title 

with his younger brother Lewis, 

14, in the 16-and-under K2 

(double) 500m race. “It was really 

good – and obviously winning 

was a bonus as well,” he said. 

With the kayaking race season 

over until December, Monk will 

continue to train six days a week 

in a bid to represent New Zealand 

again in the summer. 

“I’d like to qualify for the next 

Asia Pacific championships, and 

maybe the junior world champs 

the year after,” he said. 

Monk has taken a similar 

path to five-time Olympic gold 

medallist Lisa Carrington, who 

also took up to kayaking as a surf 

life saver. The idea of representing 

New Zealand at the Olympics is 

in Monk’s sights – but not in his 

immediate future just yet. 

“I’ll just have to take it year-byyear 

and see where it takes me.” 

First XI stars selected for 

World Cup qualifiers 


PROMISING cricketers Ben 

Breitmeyer and Cameron Paul 

have been selected to represent 

New Zealand at the under-19 

Cricket World Cup qualifiers. 

Breitmeyer, a former Christ’s 

College student, and Paul, who 

was at St Andrew’s College 

till last year, are the only 

Canterbury players to make in 

the squad of 14 who will head 

to Australia on June 9. Connor 

Stewart (St Bede’s College) has 

been named as a reserve. 

Breitmeyer and Paul were 

integral members of their first 

XI sides. Fast-bowler Breitmeyer 

was part of the Christ’s College 

side who won the Gillette Cup in 

December. 

Although St Andrew’s College 

did not qualify for the Gillette 

Cup, Paul was in the 2021 first 

XI side who beat Christ’s College 

to represent Canterbury 

at the New Zealand secondary 

schools’ tournament. 

Paul and Breitmeyer played 

for Canterbury at the national 

under-19 tournament in January. 

They both study at Lincoln 

University as cricket scholars. 

The New Zealand under-19 

team are aiming to qualify 

for the 2024 World Cup in Sri 

Lanka following New Zealand 

Cricket’s decision to opt out 

of last year’s tournament due 

to Covid-19 and player wellbeing 

issues. The squad will be 

coached by Jonny Bassett-Graham, 

with support from Graeme 

Aldridge and Paul Wiseman. 

They must top a pool 

consisting of Fiji, Indonesia, 

Japan, Papua New Guinea, 

Samoa and Vanuatu to qualify 

for the World Cup. The New 

Zealand under-19s take on 

Japan in their first match on 

June 12 in Darwin.

Multi-talented young 

sportswoman 

named in NZ team 


SIENNA STOWERS-Smith 

has been named as the only 

Mainland representative in 

the New Zealand secondary 

schools’ netball team for the 

second year in a row. 

Netball New Zealand 

announced the squad of 14 

following a three-day camp in 

Auckland consisting of fitness 

testing, skill sessions and trial 

matches. 

Stowers-Smith (left), a year 

13 St Andrew’s College student, 

was selected in the team last 

year but they were unable to 

play any international matches. 

The talented sportswoman 

plays touch for Canterbury 

and won the South Island 

secondary schools’ mixed title 

as co-captain of St Andrew’s in 

March. 

Stowers-Smith also played 

for the New Zealand Māori 

under-18 Ngā Māreikura 

sevens team at the world school 

tournament last December. 

Stowers-Smith and her New 

Zealand team-mates will travel 

to Australia in June for a camp 

and their first international in 

three years. 

NZSS head coach Pelesa Semu 

said it was an exciting time for 

the side. 

“Our opportunities to head 

overseas for international play 

has been severely impacted 

in recent years due to Covid,” 

Semu said. 

“I don’t think we can 

underestimate the importance 

of this pathway when we look 

at the bigger picture of high 

performance netball in New 

Zealand. 

“It all begins again here and 

Jo and myself are eager to work 

with this group of players and 

watch their progress.” 

The team includes former 

Silver Ferns head coach Janine 

Southby’s daughter, Ella, and 

current Silver Fern Elle Temu’s 

sister, Summer. 

Four players have also played 

for various National Netball 

League franchises this season, 

the league which feeds players 

into the ANZ Premiership.

from June 27 to July 3.

squash instead. It is important 

to use a firm-fleshed pumpkin 

or squash, so it keeps its shape 

inside the pastry. Just make sure 

to let it cool and firm up before 

you use it. 

Makes 12 

Ingredients 

For the pumpkin: 

1kg butternut squash or pumpkin 

(peeled weight) 

½ tsp aleppo pepper 

3 spring onions 

325g puff pastry 

1 egg, beaten 

2 tsp nigella seeds 

For the dipping sauce: 

4 tsp pomegranate molasses 

1 clove garlic 

5 Tbsp olive oil 

Juice of ½ lemon 

2 tsp grain mustard 

A large baking sheet 

Directions 

Put a deep pan of water on to 

boil and place a steamer basket 

or colander over it, covered with 

a lid. Cut the squash or pumpkin 

into 5cm pieces and steam for 

about 25-30 minutes until tender 

to the point of a knife. 

Transfer the cooked squash, 

still in its steamer, to drain over 

a mixing bowl. Then put the 

squash into a bowl and using a 

potato masher or a fork, crush 

to a thick mash. Season with 

salt, black pepper and the aleppo 

pepper. Finely chop and add the 

spring onions. Set aside to cool. 

The mash must be firm and cold 

before you use it. If it isn’t then 

drain it further over a bowl in 

the fridge. 

Roll the puff pastry into a 

rectangle approximately 35 x 

25cm, then turn the pastry so the 

longest side is facing you. Cut in 

half lengthways (to give 2 strips 

of pastry 35 x 12.5cm). Spoon 

half the squash in a line along 

the edge of the pastry facing you, 

about 2cm from the edge. Brush 

the pastry edge with beaten egg, 

then roll up tightly into a long 

sausage, sealing the pastry edges 

together with more of the egg. 

Repeat using the second piece 

of pastry and the remaining 

squash. Place in the fridge for 40 

minutes. (Don’t be tempted to 

skip this step.) 

Set the oven at 200 deg C and 

place a baking sheet in the oven. 

Remove the rolls of pastry 

from the fridge and slice each 

one into six short lengths. Using

a palette knife, transfer the rolls 

to the heated baking sheet. Brush 

lightly with more beaten egg, 

then cut a small slit in the top 

of each and sprinkle with the 

nigella seeds. 

Bake in the preheated oven for 

25-30 minutes until the pastry is 

golden and puffed. Remove and 

leave to rest for a few minutes 

before transferring to a serving 

plate or board. 

Make the dip: 

Put the pomegranate molasses 

in a small saucepan with the 

garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and 

mustard, bring to the boil, then 

pour into a small dish. Dip each 

roll into the sauce as you eat. 

Ingredients 

6 apples, sweet and mediumsized 

45g butter 

3 Tbsp maple syrup 

250ml cream 

½ tsp 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

Directions 

Set the oven at 200 deg C. 

Using a sharp knife, score each 

apple 1cm down from the stem. 

This will allow the flesh to puff 

up as it bakes. Then place them, 

just touching, in a baking dish. 

Melt the butter in a small pan, 

then remove from the heat and 

spoon over the apples. Bake until 

the apples have puffed up and 

their flesh is soft and frothy. The 

exact timing will depend on the 

variety of apple, so start checking 

after 25-30 minutes. The 

occasional baste with the buttery 

juices in the baking dish is a 

thoroughly good thing. 

When the apples are nearly 

ready, pour the cream into a small 

saucepan, add the maple syrup, 

ground cinnamon and vanilla 

extract. Bring to the boil and let it 

bubble for a minute, then spoon 

over the baked apples.

Landlords to provide heating in rentals, it’s

standards.

and an unhealthy living environment. 

Providing a fixed heater with a higher heat

Start dreaming of driving electric 

BUILD YOUR Dreams – 

abbreviated to BYD, that’s the 

name for one of the newest 

entrants into New Zealand’s 

electric vehicle market. 

More specifically, the BYD 

Atto3 is the key model here 

for the all-electric Chinese car 

building company, and it’s a 

tidy, stylish sport utility vehicle 

that already I’m seeing in good 

numbers on our roads. If you are 

wondering where Atto comes 

from, it is inspired by the Attosecond 

– the smallest time scale 

unit in physics – and according 

to BYD it represents speed, energy 

and dynamics. 

The Atto3 lands here in two 

model variants distinguished by 

their battery size. The extended 

range vehicle incorporates the 

larger of the lithium-ion battery 

capacities – a 60kWh unit – 

giving a 420km range and the 

standard battery unit – 50kWh 

– providing a range of 345km. 

Both models are driven by a 

single motor powering the front 

wheels, there is 150kW of power 

on tap with 310Nm of torque 

in both, offering a standstill to 

100km/h time of 7.3sec. 

Prices start at $55,490 for the 

standard model, the extended 

range variant adds $4500. Those 

prices both easily qualify for the 

full New Zealand Government 

Clean Car Programme rebate of 

$8625. 

Specification items are numerous, 

I can report that for 

its price there’s a good level of 

fitment. The evaluation car was 

the range-topper, but most of 

what is in that is also included 

in the entry-level model, it’s 

just the battery capacity that is 

different and the colour choices 

vary from level to level. For 

those of you who like to see the 

stars when you’re travelling at 

night, the Atto3 gets a full length 

panoramic roof, along with 

heated and electric seats, keyless 

entry and ignition, and electric 

tailgate, just to mention a few of 

the major items. When you take 

into account the value you get for 

the money, it’s no wonder BYD 

is showing much appeal in this 

country. 

The interior is very space age. 

The design and trim elements are 

styled with ideas that I’ve never 

seen before in any car. I particularly 

like the guitar strings that 

are fitted to the front doors, you 

can play music to the beat of the 

radio while sitting at the everincreasing 

traffic light queues. 

I travelled 200km in the evaluation 

vehicle, when I picked it 

up there was 86 per cent charge 

on the battery capacity display 

offering a distance to empty of 

400km. It panned out so that 

plugging in for several hours 

each night meant I could keep 

the batteries well within a range 

that minimised anxiety, although 

at a short 4m, the domestic 

cable is only just long enough 

to reach my garage plug. 

Of course, fast charging at a 

designated port will boost the 

batteries from 20 to 80 per cent 

in around 30min. 

A good friend of mine who 

lives in Australia has had a 

hefty deposit on an Atto3 for six 

months and there’s still no sign 

of his car arriving, but every 

market is different and I’d like to 

think that any prospective buyer 

here will be satisfied with their 

buying experience.

A Christchurch car dealer is offering a new and 

innovative way to trade-in your old car and help those 

in need at the same time. 

Tim Koller Motor Company (TKMC) is offering car 

owners the opportunity to donate their old vehicles 

with the proceeds going to World Vision New Zealand. 

Mr Koller says the initiative saves car owners the 

arduous process of selling a second-hand vehicle and 

means they help people living in the world’s toughest 

places. 

“We know that most people hate the process of selling 

a car. It’s a hassle, it’s stressful and it’s hard work! This 

initiative means people avoid the pain of trying to find 

a private buyer or negotiate a trade-in. 

“Now, they can simply donate their car and the sale 

proceeds will be used to help World Vision deliver 

emergency food to hungry children; clean water and 

sanitation to improve the health of entire communities; 

and provide safe spaces for children fleeing from

Use Technology 

Most online real estate agents and 

portals give you the option to set up 

alerts for houses that match your 

parameters. Look out for the ones where 

it’s possible to add inspection times and 

auctions to your digital calendar. 

What should you be looking out for at 

an inspection? 

As you’re walking through and around 

the property, take note of the following. 

• Does everything open and shut? 

• Do doors close smoothly or do they 

stick? 

• Do lights turn on and off without 

flickering? 

• Do taps work and is the water flow 

adequate? 

• Are there signs of water damage (i.e. 

peeling or bubbled paint work, mould, 

stained ceilings)? 

• Do the floors slope or bounce? This 

may mean piles need replacing. 

• Are there cracks in the walls, which 

could be an indication of subsidence or 

earthquake damage? 

• Is there any fretting (cracked) 

brickwork that could indicate major 

structural problems? 

• Don’t forget to walk around the 

outside of the property to check 

fences and the condition of the 

building’s exterior including gutters 

and downpipes.
