Season finishes on a<br />

high for bowls club<br />

A function and trophy presentation was held at Burnside Bowling Club on Saturday<br />

to mark the end of the season. The club’s publicity officer Kerrie Bruce reports<br />

SEVERAL SPECIAL guests were<br />

among the crowd at Burnside’s<br />

annual closing day function.<br />

After the flag was lowered to<br />

mark the end of the summer<br />

bowls season on Saturday, club<br />

patron <strong>May</strong>or Phil Mauger spoke<br />

to members.<br />

He said the club was “a<br />

fantastic asset for the local<br />

neighbourhood and for our<br />

city”.<br />

“The level of success is a result<br />

of having such a strong club.”<br />

Canterbury Charity Hospital<br />

Trust chair Philip Bagshaw and<br />

Dame Sue Bagshaw were also<br />

invited to accept a $600 donation<br />

to the hospital.<br />

Other guests included<br />

city councillor Sam MacDonald<br />

and Bowls Canterbury general<br />

manager Lorraine McLeod.<br />

Several fun activities and games<br />

were held including a match<br />

between the men’s and women’s<br />

club championship winners.<br />

There was no trophy on the<br />

line, just bragging rights. The<br />

men won all of the games except<br />

one.<br />

A the prize-giving ceremony,<br />

Richard Hocking was named<br />

men’s player of the year.<br />

Hocking had a big season with<br />

a number of highlights including<br />

three Burnside championship<br />

titles, Canterbury Centre<br />

men’s singles runner-up, and<br />

Stewart Buttar Burnside pairs<br />

tournament runner-up.<br />

He also received a silver star<br />

for reaching 12 Burnside titles.<br />

Tayla Bruce was named<br />

women’s player of the year.<br />

Bruce’s highlights included two<br />

Commonwealth Games bronze<br />

medals, a world champion of<br />

champion women’s singles gold<br />

medal, and gold in the multinations<br />

women’s triples and<br />

national pairs.<br />

The Burnside women’s under-5<br />

singles winner was Jill Lee who<br />

also took out the Canterbury<br />

Centre champions of champions<br />

women’s under-5 singles.<br />
