With the weather starting to brighten up and get warmer, it feels like
everyone’s outlook is just that bit more positive...
And I guess that mentality is a good way to look at things, like it is in this
month’s Business Pilot Barometer. This month’s data suggests that while it is
clear there has been a slowdown in recent months, it doesn’t necessarily mean
there’s a downturn is on its way. See all this month’s sector data on page 16.
Positivity is also in the air with the fact that at the time of writing this, there
is just a few short weeks until we all head to Birmingham and return for FIT
Show 2023!
In this issue, we sit down with FIT Show Event Director Nickie West to discuss
the past, present and future for the show as it celebrates its 10th anniversary
this year! And to complement that, we also hear from companies attending the
show this year, such as Haffner, who once again have the show’s biggest stand,
glass giants Saint-Gobain Glass, and in the second part of our interview with
Selecta Systems on page 28, we discuss the company’s recent investments and
innovations, some of which will be on show at the NEC.
Elsewhere in this issue, First Degree Systems’ Greg Beachim provides his
solution to help fabricators stop holding too much stock (page 42); we
speak to hardware manufacturer Debar, who recently celebrated 15 years in
business (page 48); and forklift experts Combilift explain why your business
should really be investing in electric forklifts (page 62).
I hope you enjoy the issue, and we look forward to seeing many of you at the FIT
Show later this month. And whilst you’re at the NEC, make sure you grab your
copy of our FIT Show Daily paper, which will keep you up to date with all the
news from around the show!
News Roundup
A RECORD MONTH
BATTLING THE
ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE, SAYS
DECEUNINCK ALUMINIUM...
Anyone supplying windows and doors into new
build – including home extensions – has only
days to meet tougher standards of thermal
performance.
Nigel Headford
The Part L new build transition period comes to
an end on the 15th of June 2023.
A Freedom of Information request to
the British Business Bank by Purbeck
Personal Guarantee Insurance has
revealed the current level of debt and
arrears associated with the Bounce
Back Loan Scheme (BBLS), The
Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan
Scheme (CBILS) and the Recovery Loan
Scheme (RLS).
Purbeck’s analysis shows that over
145,000 BBL loans worth £3.8bn are in
default as businesses continue to battle
economic headwinds.
The findings come as latest estimates
show that of £47 billion paid out in
Bounceback Loans, £17 billion is already
expected to be lost, £4.9 billion of that -
over 10% of the loans - to fraud.
9% of Bounce Back Loans are currently
in default, down fractionally from 12% in
July 2022 with the average loan in default
standing at £26,571.
The analysis has also uncovered that
businesses are typically borrowing £210k
under the Recovery Loan Scheme which
is open for applications until June 2024,
and the average personal guarantee
commitment made by business owners
to secure a loan under the Scheme is
£472k.
www.purbeckinsurance.co.uk
Unless a project breaks ground before the transition
period ends, all windows and doors supplied to site
need to meet the higher standards of performance
introduced in last year’s update to Part L.
Coming into force almost exactly a year
ago (June 2022) revised Part L building regs
introduced a new notional U-value requirement
for new build windows and doors of 1.2W/m 2 K –
but with a 12-month stay of execution.
Nigel Headford, Director, Deceuninck Aluminium,
said that the end of the transition period could
force manufacturers of legacy aluminium systems
out of new build.
“There are a frightening number of older
aluminium systems which can’t get down to
U-values of 1.2W/m 2 K without using triple-glazed
units, which comes with increased cost and
weight, impacting on handling and hardware.
London-based investment firm RDCP Group
has made a major investment and acquired
98% of Somerset-based window, door, and
conservatory manufacturer Majestic Group.
After a record year, celebrating circa £8m in
turnover and £2m in operating profits, boasting
a 25% profit margin, Majestic says it is now
targeting significant growth in the years ahead.
Majestic Group consists of the manufacturing
company Majestic Window Designs (MWD) and
its sister retailing and installation company
Majestic Designs (UK). Based in Cheddar, the
business manufactures all its windows, doors,
and conservatories from its factories.
“It also has ramifications for home improvement
because under the regulations extensions are
classed as new build, so the implications are
significant.”
To combat the upcoming changes, Deceuninck
Aluminium continued with the rapid expansion of
its product offer, with the launch of the new ultraenergy
efficient Decalu88 Flush Casement Window.
Nigel added: “The new Decalu88 Flush
Casement makes compliance simple with
U-values of 1.2W/m 2 K with a standard doubleglazed
unit and none of the complexity for either
installers or the fabricators supplying them.”
https://deceuninckaluminium.co.uk
INVESTMENT GROUP PURCHASE
Majestic has been in operation for over 20
years after being established by Steve Harris and
employs over 60 staff members.
Steve Harris recently sold the business to RDCP
following his decision to retire and spend more
time with his family.
AT PRECISION
MAKES NFA FINALS
REYNAERS JOINS THE GGF
Reynaers says it is underlining its
commitment to supporting the glazing
sector through ongoing regulatory change,
by announcing it has joined the Glass and
Glazing Federation (GGF).
AT Precision has been confirmed as a finalist
in this year’s National Fenestration Awards.
The Durham-based company was been
shortlisted in the ‘Door Component of the
Year’ category.
Michael Hewitt, AT Precision Sales Director,
commented: “We’re delighted to have been
shortlisted for this award, and would like to
thank everyone who nominated us.
“Our team is dedicated to supplying the
very best in aluminium bi-fold hardware, and
this nomination is a testament to our hard
work, as well as to the support of our valued
customers.”
Already an active member of organisations
such as the Centre for Window and Cladding
Technology (CWCT) and the Council for
Aluminium Building (CAB), membership of
the GGF will further increase Reynaers’ ability
to help shape the future of the industry, with
particular interest in important topics such as
environmental legislation.
The Reynaers team held a series of roadshows
to inform customers and stakeholders about
changes and to discuss how they would work in
practice.
Samantha Hill, Head of Marketing at Reynaers
UK, said: “The need to act now in supporting
more sustainable construction practices could
not be clearer. To do this effectively it’s critical
that the glazing industry plays an active part in
the conversation, working with the Government
to develop the right regulations and guidance.
“The GGF has an excellent track record in
doing this, and we are delighted to join them
in making sure that installers, fabricators and
manufacturers can have their voices heard.”
www.reynaers.co.uk
Samantha Hill
AT Precision supplies the Everglide range
of bi-fold hardware, the Everseal range
of gaskets, as well as security hardware,
plastic ancillaries, and aluminium profile.
All products are compatible with all major
systems, and because they’re made inhouse,
come at a more affordable price
compared to other suppliers.
The company also recently introduced
a new Recycled Thermal Reinforcement
(RTR) system to its production line – the
new recycling scheme sees them picking up
unused PVC-U materials from customers,
and processing this for the manufacturing of
screw retention profile bars.
“At AT Precision, we pride ourselves on
supplying fabricators across the UK with
affordable hardware, with no compromise on
quality.”
HOODIES ‘BUILT FOR COMFORT’
Snickers Workwear says its
hoodies are built for comfort.
Along with the Work Trousers
range, its Hoodies and
Sweatshirts are said to be
the most popular products
among Snickers Workwear
users. Designed specifically
for professional craftsmen
and women, they’re built for
durability and comfort.
The ‘full zip’ or ‘overhead’ styles are ideal
as mid-Layer working clothes. They’ll fit well
with a jacket on chilly days and can be worn
as an outer layer in the spring and summer
months. You can choose from a selection of
fabric options that include Polartec micro fleece
and cosy polycotton. Street-smart and great for
on-site work or leisure activities there’s over
40 styles and a host of colours to choose from
including the new khaki green option, as well as
Class 1 and Class 2 High-Vis.
They’re also available with the Snickers
for company profiling.
ORION IS ALREADY
A STAR
AN ‘ELECTRIC’ PRODUCT LAUNCH
As Combilift celebrates its 25th anniversary,
the company plans to ensure that 2023
will be a year to remember, by launching
multiple products across various global
exhibitions.
VBH, the hardware manufacturer behind
the greenteQ range, has advised that
its Orion TS007 3 Star profile cylinder
has been welcomed to the market “with
open arms”.
VBH says Orion is the top-level
profile cylinder in the greenteQ range,
which also includes the entry level 6
pin Gamma, and TS007 1 Star Q-Star
models.
To kick off, the newest product – the COMBi-
CUBE was launched at the LogiMAT International
Intralogistics show in Stuttgart.
This new electric model incorporates a host of
technological and design features that not only
enhance handling procedures but also offer a high
level of driver comfort.
The driver’s position in the centre of the cab
offers generous room and excellent all-round
visibility.
The angle of the telescopic steering column
can be adjusted and the Grammer MSG65 seat,
combined with hydraulic cabin mounts guarantees
a comfortable ride.
An adjustable arm rest is mounted to the
seat suspension which incorporates a multifunction
joystick and an LCD colour touch
screen.
Combilift CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar
said: “Our engineers and R&D department
have been tirelessly preparing for a year of
new launches, and the Combi-CUBE is proof of
our continued commitment to provide the best
and most innovative handling solutions for our
worldwide customers.”
www.combilift.com
More from Combilift on page 62
As a 3 Star rated cylinder according
to the TS007 Kitemark, Orion offers
protection against drilling, picking,
bumping and snapping, all without the
need of additional hardware such as a
security handle or cylinder guard.
LINIAR OPENS NEW MIXING PLANT
Liniar says it is prepared for further growth
with the opening of its new mixing plant in
Denby, Derbyshire.
Hayley Martin, Media Coordinator at
VBH, said: “Being involved in promoting
Orion is a dream as it pretty much takes
care of itself!
“The snap guarantee element is very
simple. We will pay the homeowner
£2000 if the Orion cylinder is snapped
and a break in is successful as a result.
We’ve had no claims yet.
“The Key Security aspect is really
popular. When the homeowner registers
their guarantee online, they are
prompted to set up a password. Once the
password is set, additional keys can only
be cut when the password is given. This
has proved a real hit.”
www.vbhgb.com
Officially opened by Scott Zuehlke,
Senior Vice President, Chief Financial
Officer and Treasurer and Mark Livingston,
Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer
and Controller from the Quanex Senior
Leadership Team, the new £3million facility
mirrors the footprint of Liniar’s existing
PVC-U mixing plant.
The two mixing plants will run in tandem
using the very latest technology to
seamlessly switch between rigid and foam
PVCU mixes for optimum efficiency.
The build and fit-out, which took just over
ten months, has been delivered on time and
on budget by Liniar’s internal project team
and the twin mixing plants now offer the
largest PVC-U mixing capacity in Europe.
The ongoing investment in Liniar’s
plant and machinery means the systems
company can continue on its path of
sustainable, steady growth, whilst
maintaining an 99% OTIF rate across its
loyal customer base.
Liniar is already embarking on the
next phase of its site expansion with the
addition of a 350,000 sq. ft warehouse and
manufacturing facility during 2023.
PROTECTION FOR
YOUR EYES
Eyes are incredibly sensitive and
good protection is critical for many
construction jobs. Protective eyewear
is required whenever there is a risk
to the eyes and they should shield you
from splatter, dust, impact and light
filtration.
With that in mind, Carhartt has
developed a range of lightweight but
tough and highly protective safety
glasses, including a new half-frame
ratcheting temple design.
The Carhartt range of safety glasses
all meet EN 166, the European Standard
covering the requirements for protective
eyewear.
With a polycarbonate lens and frame,
these glasses are almost unbreakable –
polycarbonate is 250 times more resistant
to impact than glass, and 10 times more
resistant than standard plastic.
Polycarbonate lenses are also thinner
and lighter than other materials and
naturally block out 100% of the sun’s
UV rays – one of the biggest risks to eye
health.
All are available in three colours, bronze,
grey or clear, to suit different lighting
requirements and each pair comes with a
Carhartt polybag or, in the case of Ironside
Plus Safety Glasses (EGB6DT), a Carhartt
clamshell.
HINGE FAMILY SET TO GROW
VBH has announced that the Sigma door hinge
‘family’ is being bolstered by two new additions
this spring.
Sigma is the umbrella name for the entire
greenteQ resi-door hinge range that, until now,
includes three models to suit PVC-U and composite
doors.
Firstly, the company has recently launched a
new butt hinge for aluminium entrance doors. The
hinge will carry sashes weighing up to 90KG and
is available in white, black, anthracite grey and F1
silver anodised finishes.
VBH says that no jigs are required to fit the hinge,
known as the Sigma Aluminium Butt Hinge.
Following closely behind is the Sigma
Velocity Hinge for rebated doors. The 2-knuckle
construction T-Hinge design provides an
alternative to the Sigma Flag hinge, which VBH
advises is still immensely popular.
Rob Norman, Business Development Director at
Carl F Groupco has renewed its
membership of Secured by Design, the
official police security initiative.
John Crittenden, Managing Director of Carl F
Groupco, said: “The safety and security of our
products has always been front and centre of
our business.
“Moreover, we know how much our
customers value such recognition and are
reassured by our continued membership
NEW HQ FOR JADE
ENGINEERING
Jade Engineering’s Directors, Sean Mackey (left) and
Adam Jones (right)
Jade Engineering, a UK machinery
and machine tool manufacturer, has
purchased a 30,000 feet 2 industrial
property it that is destined to become the
Coventry-based firm’s headquarters from
the end of 2023.
Located just metres from the company’s
current main Bayton Road, Coventry
premises, the new building will allow
most of the company’s operations and
50-plus staff to be located under the same
roof, consolidated from three other sites
currently occupied. This includes machine
tool manufacture and manufacturing
operations for the company’s specialist,
single purpose frame fabrication machines.
Sheet metal production will continue in a
separate 6,000 feet 2 unit close by.
The new premises, which are located on
a four-acre, secure site will encourage the
natural efficiencies gained by consolidating
key operations under a single roof, in
addition to providing room for growth and
space for new, complementary enterprises.
Jade Engineering says the building caps
a proactive five-year period during which a
number of companies have been acquired,
including SALtech Machinery and Edgwick
Sheet Metal, that bring all complementary
operations under the control of Sean
Mackey and Adam Jones, who have owned
the business for the past 14 years.
SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES STILL PERSIST
72% of businesses reported supply issues
in the last six months of 2022, and don’t
expect the situation to improve soon
according to INVERTO’s “Risk Management
Study 2022”.
The study also found that more and more
companies are investing in digital tools, with the
number of businesses extensively using digital
tools to address supply chain risk increasing by
13 percentage points to 29 percent compared to
the previous year.
47 percent are partially using digital tools,
however, there are still around a quarter of
respondents not using any digital solutions for
their risk management.
Daniel Drylie, Principal at INVERTO UK, said:
“Companies have understood that effective
monitoring of supply chain risks is by far the
most effective when using digital tools and
With summer approaching, Machine Mart
has added two new Clarke orbital drum
fans to its product range.
Machine Mart says the two models are
great for keeping you cool in commercial
and industrial locations such as large
warehouses, workshops, factories and
shops.
The Clarke CAM20R 20” Orbital Drum Fan
and the Clarke CAM24R 24” Orbital Drum
Fan both offer 360° tilting and rotating to
allow you to alter the
airflow to suit your
needs, keeping the
entire room cool.
Both fans are
designed to create
the maximum airflow
output whilst also
being extremely
the increased transparency and automated
monitoring that they provide.
“Today, the question is no longer whether a
company digitises processes, but how.
“While measures such as long-term framework
agreements or dual-sourcing strategies continue
to be important for companies when dealing with
procurement risks, we have also witnessed that
the ability to react quickly is becoming more
important.
“The secret here lies in getting onto the front
foot and spotting risks before they actually
become issues”
“ In that light, 43 percent of respondents have
set up a task force for the ad-hoc management
of acute risk cases and 35 percent use an early
warning system to detect risks.”
www.inverto.com/en
KEEPING YOU COOL THIS SUMMER
efficient and sturdy.
Both models are said to benefit from robust
and durable construction, and feature three
balanced high efficiency aluminium blades
which are protected by painted steel casing,
guard and frame.
All of this combines to allow both the
CAM20R and CAM24R to meet the latest
energy standards.
14 TF MAY / JUNE 2023 CONNECTING THE WINDOW, DOOR & ROOF FABRICATION SUPPLY CHAIN

The Business Pilot Barometer
FEELING THE PINCH?
Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst at Business Pilot, says despite the data pointing to a
recent slowdown, “it doesn’t signal the arrival of a downturn”...
We are seeing a slowdown. Average window
and door sales in April [2022] dropped
13% on March, while leads dropped by
20% (Business Pilot Barometer, May 2022).
There is a sense that lower sales last month
are an indication that the cost-of-living crisis is
finally biting. Average window and door sales in
April 2023 were down 7%, while leads were down
9%.
Things slowed last month, but what is clear from
figures for 2022, is it doesn’t signal the arrival of
a downturn.
Most window and door companies would have
been happy with their bottom lines come the
close of the financial year. There is no reason –
so far – to indicate that they won’t be again. A lot
of the economic conditions remain the same, if
not slightly improved.
In fact, despite the fall seen March to April on
sales, year-on-year, they’re up 17% April 2023
compared to 2022. Leads are also up year-onyear
by a more modest 3%, despite a month-onmonth
fall March to April 2023 of 9%.
The 9% drop in leads March to April is the figure
to track going forward.
Conversion rates have remained at around the
38% mark for the last three months. This would
suggest a drop in sales this month (May) by about
the same. This would, in theory, lead to smaller
fabricator order books from late May into June.
Average order values were down 20% March to
April this year and 24% year-on-year.
Monthly fluctuations of this kind, are, however
not uncommon month-on-month, and so again
should not be interpreted in isolation as a signal
of a slowdown.
Stubbornly high inflation (still at 10.1%) and
the cost-of-living crisis, is probably having
an impact. That said the closely watched GfK
Consumer Confidence Index at the end of
last month found that consumer confidence
increased, rising by six points to -30.
Consumers also felt more confident about their
personal finances with an eight-point increase to
-13, while they were also prepared to spend on
big ticket items with the big purchase index at its
highest level in a year at -28.
While it isn’t guaranteed that renewed consumer
confidence will convert into home improvement
spend, it is a prerequisite to it, which is why
projected figures for May based on current leads
in April, have the potential to exceed expectations.
It is also worth reflecting on the fact that the over
65s are sitting comfortably on a record
£2.2 trillion in mortgage-free housing wealth.
Close behind them, according to last month’s
research by Savills, are owner-occupiers aged
50-64 who hold £1.53 trillion.
These groups may not be immune from inflation,
but they are not feeling the same dent in their
finances, while still high energy bills and the end
of Government subsidies next month [June], give
them a very real reason to invest.
There is more of an affordability gap for other
socio-economic groups but the incentive to
improve the energy efficiency of their home
remains, which is why we believe finance is
increasingly important in driving conversions, for
those not lucky enough to have seen their housing
wealth double in a decade!
The Business Pilot Barometer offers a monthly analysis of the key trends defining window and door
retail, drawing on real industry data collated by the Business Pilot customer relationship management
system (CRM). Business Pilot uses cloud-based technologies to give installers complete visibility of every
element of their operation from leads and conversions to job scheduling, cost of installation, service
FIT Show Preview
A FITTING CELEBRATION
We caught up with FIT Show Event Director Nickie West to discuss FIT’s 10th anniversary, hear
why this year’s show is not to be missed and find out what’s planned for future events...
Total Fabricator (TF): It’s not long until FIT
Show 2023 now! Can you tell us about some of
the key new attractions at this year’s event?
Nickie West (NW): FIT Show 2023 is so close,
it’s palpable! There are so many new things for
people to see and do at the show this year. We’ve
worked really hard to bring new brands, products
and features to the show as we know how
challenging it is for installers to take time off the
tools and away from the day job to visit FIT Show.
This year’s line-up is not to be missed!
Just some of the highlights will include:
• Almost 40% of the exhibitors at FIT Show
2023 have come from overseas which
means visitors will be able to see the latest
products and innovations literally from
across the world
• We’ve launched the new Installer Hub with
live installation and product demos from
the likes of Whitesales, Strongdor, GGF and
Made for Trade
• 25% of the exhibitors have never exhibited
at FIT Show before so these will be new and
exciting for our visitors
• We’ve got a long list of exclusive show offers
and discounts that visitors will only be able
to access if they attend FIT Show
• And visitors can access 30+ hours of CPD
certified learning content in the seminar
theatre
TF: What are your thoughts on the show
reaching its 10th edition? How do you feel the
show has evolved over the years?
NW: Ten years really is a big milestone for FIT
Show and the industry we serve. We launched
FIT Show back in 2013 based on a genuine need
for a trade show platform to connect people and
products on a large scale.
FIT Show is still the primary place for brands to
showcase the latest products and innovations and
connect with clients and customers. And it’s still
the only place for UK visitors to compare the latest
products side-by-side, network, do business and
speak directly to manufacturers and suppliers all
under one roof across three days.
In terms of evolution, what started out as a
predominantly PVC-U windows and doors event
has grown significantly to reflect the changing
needs of the market and innovation driven by the
“There will be tonnes
of exclusive offers and
discounts that only
show visitors will be
able to access”
market’s leading brands.
Visitors can now see the full range of products,
materials and services used for commercial or
residential construction and interior work at FIT
Show. From aluminium and timber windows and
doors through to lantern roofs and lifting equipment.
It’s for these reasons, and thanks to the support
of the industry, that FIT Show continues to go
from strength to strength.
TF: You cover so many disciplines in terms of
product offering for visitors from across the
supply chain, are there any new areas you’re
expanding into for FIT Show 2023?
NW: FIT Show 2022 saw the introduction of the
new outdoor living feature with products such
as decking, fencing, awnings and garden rooms.
We’re looking to build on this at FIT Show 2023
coupled with an increased focus on roofing
solutions. Visitors can see the latest tiled roofing
systems, lanterns and rooflights from brands
including Supalite, Brett Martin and FIT Show first
timers, Whitesales.
TF: After this year, the show reverts back
to every two years following the disruption
caused by the pandemic. Why do you feel the
show works better for all involved having it
every two years?
NW: That’s right, after FIT Show 2023 there will
be no show until 29th April – 1st May 2025. That
means anyone who misses FIT Show this May will
miss three years’ worth of shows with a two-year
gap until the next instalment.
Two years is definitely the sweet spot between
shows as it allows enough time for product
development to truly be able to deliver value at
every FIT Show. We’ve worked closely with our
stakeholders and researched our audience and
the market to reach this pattern.
TF: How is the seminar and speaker
programme developing? What topics will you
be shining a light on for your visitors?
NW: The seminar programme is now live on the
FIT Show website and people can pre-register for
specific sessions to secure their spot in the theatre.
The programme includes 30+ hours of CPD
certified learning content covering everything
from the latest building regulations, through to
practical advice and support to improve visitors’
business operations and marketing to increase
profitability when they leave the show.
TF: What will you do between now and 2025
when the show returns to maintain contact
with the market?
NW: With a two-year gap between shows, we’ll
be maintaining regular contact with the market
through the usual marketing channels. The FIT
Show CPD learning programme will also run online
again in 2024 after the success or trialling this in
2021 during covid. You’ll also be able to see our
team out and about at various networking events.
TF: Will the show be once again offering
visitors exclusive FIT Show discounts?
NW: There will be tonnes of exclusive show offers
and discounts that only visitors to the show will
be able to access.
These are just some of the offers visitors will be
able to benefit from:
• Winkhaus is running a daily competition to
• Whitesales are inviting visitors to take a ‘We
BM GROUP BACK AT FIT
The Business Micros Group will be at this
year’s FIT Show, and the company says it
will be showing fabricators and installers
why, when it comes to software and web
solutions, it is still the number one supplier
in the industry.
All the Business Micros Group companies
will be represented on the stand, including
BM Aluminium, which will be giving visitors
their first look at v12 of its LogiKal aluminium
processing software, and demonstrating some
of the features and shortcuts in LogiKal which
can help users get even more value from their
rental subscription.
The Business Micros team will also be
highlighting the newest stock management
and delivery features in its EvoNET business
management system, and The Consultancy
will be demonstrating its web development
and retail lead generation solutions.
Graeme Bailey, Group Managing Director, said:
“We’re very excited to be back at FIT in 2023
as the bigger and stronger BM Group. Our
stand will showcase the depth and breadth of
our product range and expertise, and reinforce
to existing and potential new customers
that we can support them with any digital or
software requirement.”
Nickie West, the FIT Show Event Director, added:
“Business Micros exhibited at the very first FIT
A TRUSTED PLATFORM FOR REBRAND
First Degree Systems’ international parent
company has rebranded as Cyncly, and will
be exhibiting at the FIT Show to let customers
experience how a new period of investment and
expansion across the home improvement space
will benefit companies using its software,
including window and door fabricators.
“Our new brand, Cyncly, unites us and
encompasses our passion to drive
innovation to enable our customers to be
more successful,” Ron Crowl (pictured
right), Cyncly’s Managing Director
Windows, Doors & Glass, explained. “We
are transforming the way our customers do
business, enabling them to simplify complexity, grow
sales, increase efficiency, and drive innovation.
“Bringing together best-in-industry solutions from
all our brands, Cyncly helps everyone in the value
chain make their work and the outcomes for their
customers amazing.”
Gerda says it has taken the lessons learned
from its spectacular debut and distilled that
information into its offer for visitors to its stand
at the 2023 event.
Gerda Residential Doors says it is unique in
the UK with a range of contemporary steel and
aluminium faced doors, that offer a level of
thermal and security performance that is not
available at this price point from any other brand.
The past year has been used to develop classic
four panel, glazed and unglazed styles in addition
to the contemporary designs that have become
so popular with buyers of aluminium windows in
Britain and Ireland in recent years.
Gerda’s unique engineered construction uses
steel or aluminium skins mounted on robust
internal aluminium chassis, utilising a PU foam
core that provides excellent thermal insulation.
Gerda doors are specified throughout mainland
Europe for their attention to security, with all
doors enjoying multi point locks, three bolt main
Cyncly’s brands that operate in the window, door
and glass sectors in the UK include First Degree
software solutions on Stand Q15 at the FIT Show.
Greg Beachim, Sales Manager of First Degree
Systems, said: “We can now take Window Designer
to places we didn’t even think possible as
part of a small company. Cyncly gives us
access to 2,500 employees across the
world – each with their own special set
of skills – who can develop the right
solutions for our customers.
OPENING NEW DOORS
Two brands have come together to launch a
residential door range which will be revealed
for the first time at the FIT Show.
The Residence Door Collection by Apeer
delivers a range of 20 door styles that have
been curated to complement Residence
Collection windows in terms of aesthetics,
quality and performance, and built around a
specification developed by composite door
manufacturer Apeer, that is designed to
future-proof the range.
Whilst designed primarily to complement
the widely acclaimed Residence Collection
flush sash windows, the range will be widely
available on the open market.
A total of twenty designs have been chosen,
including a concept door that the companies
say is designed to include everything that
the Residence Door Collection by Apeer
embodies, including the key elements of
design and performance.
Each door will be presented as a 120mm front-toback
format, including traditional, contemporary
and stable door designs, with 78mm quadruple
sealed glass units as standard.
Construction will be of GPR skins around
a high-density PU core, reinforced with
aluminium anti-cut through security mesh
embedded within the core of each door. Every
door, including skins and glass units, will be
manufactured by Apeer at its 120,000 feet 2
Ballymena factory.
LOTS TO SEE AND HEAR ON THE GGF STAND
In a bid to be more open, transparent and
accessible, the GGF and its associate bodies,
FENSA, BFRC (Window and Door Energy
Ratings), Installsure (specialist insurance)
and RISA (inspections), are inviting FIT Show
visitors to find out more about the initiatives
and support services now on offer.
New initiatives in recent months, from the GGF
alone, include the Skilled Pathways Training scheme,
Window of Opportunity research and the glass
recycling scheme, as Tom Butler, Head of Sales &
Marketing explained: “The GGF Group continually
researches, develops and launches initiatives
designed to provide members and non-members
with valuable and tangible support. The GGF and
its sister organisations have also been responsible
for launching Pulse Testing to assess trickle vent
requirements on a property, which has been a huge
help to installation businesses previously worried
about the change in Building Regulations. The new
glass recycling scheme is also a welcome addition
to the already successful recycling programmes for
PVC-U and aluminium frames.
“We invite visitors to the FIT Show to come and
find out what we are about! We welcome the
opportunity to actually meet the people we serve
who are at the coalface every day. Meeting people
face-to-face allows both parties to understand
each other better, so we want visitors to ‘come and
press the flesh’ to find out more about each of the
organisations in the group, and how they work.”
3 REASONS TO ATTEND
A CLEAR VIEW FROM ROSEVIEW AT FIT
Having exhibited at every FIT Show since
the start, Emmegi (UK) knows that most
visitors to the show want to see something
new, track down show-only deals and
spend time catching up with friends and
colleagues. Unsurprisingly then, the
Emmegi (UK) stand will offer all three.
FIT 2023 will be the first chance for visitors
to see the new Precision C2 entry-level twin
head saw; and it will also be the first time
Emmegi (UK) has included Someco products
on its stand, following the acquisition of
Someco by Emmegi’s parent company Voilap.
The electronic Emmegi Precision C2 will, in
time, replace Emmegi’s Classic Magic twin
head saw and will come in two versions for
4000 and 5000mm cutting lengths, complete
with brushless motors and blade adjustment
from 90° to 22°30’. It will be on the stand
alongside the Phantomatic M4L and Comet
X4 machining centres.
The Someco products on display will
include the SM3TVH 3-head welder and
accompanying CM1H milling machine, as
Emmegi (UK) demonstrates that its range
now includes dedicated machines for PVC-U
as well as aluminium and steel.
Ian Latimer, Emmegi’s MD said: “We’ve
selected products for the 2023 stand which
we know will appeal to anyone who is
shopping for machinery at the show. The
focus will be on some of our most accessible
and cost-effective options, and will include
Someco because PVC-U is such a significant
part of FIT. Of course, we’ll also have our
Acca XL benches on display – after 10
years, the Emmegi stand at FIT wouldn’t be
complete without them!”
Roseview Windows will be exhibiting at FIT
Show 2023, where it will showcase several new
developments to its range of PVC-U sash windows.
Amongst the developments will be two key
features for Roseview’s Ultimate Rose model,
which the company believes mark a significant
step forward in modern sash window authenticity.
Roseview director Mike Bygrave said: “Roseview
has been an enthusiastic supporter of the FIT
Show since the start more than ten years ago. We
love exhibiting at FIT, and always approach our
presence with two goals in mind. Firstly, the FIT
Show provides a great environment to meet our
customers. It’s relaxed but focused, giving us the
chance to meet face-to-face with the people we
usually talk to by phone or email.
“We’re also there to show off the new products
and features we’ve developed since the last show.
This year we have a number of recently released
features, including our Seahorse sash horn and
the slightly more understated Chamber Cover.
Maximising sales opportunities by having a
different conversation about the comfort benefits
of glass will be the focus for Saint-Gobain Glass
when it exhibits at the FIT Show 2023.
The company’s Planitherm Comfort range is
used widely in the door and window industry, and
provides a range of solutions including energy
efficiency, noise reduction, reduced overheating,
enhanced security and furniture fade protection.
Marketing Director Michael Butterick said:
“There’s a huge opportunity for fabricators and
installers to enhance their customer experience,
improve profit margins and differentiate their
business by offering more choice to consumers
who are very often willing to pay for highperformance
windows and doors that help them
to achieve a more comfortable home.
Both developments represent big steps forward for
Ultimate Rose, which is already widely recognised
as the most authentic timber-alternative sash
window on the market. Plus we have a very timely
new solution for trickle vents on heritage windows;
which we’re keeping under wraps until the show!
“Roseview has a long history of innovation and
pushing the development of modern sash windows
forward, and for the last ten years the FIT Show
has been the perfect place to showcase that.”
based on your customers’ requirements and budget.
“The FIT Show is the perfect vehicle for us to
talk to the industry about the latest product
innovations and the solutions that are available
today that meet required window performances.
“Planitherm is manufactured in the UK and is
specifically designed to meet the increasing
needs of the UK market. We have a wealth of
knowledge within the business and our experts
will be on hand at the FIT Show to provide
guidance and support to fabricators and
installers.”
“Glass will typically make up 70% of a window,
and plays a big part in maximising comfort within a
property – but it’s important to choose the right glass
Case Study
MODERN WINDOWS, COUNTRY STYLE
Total Fabricator hears how REHAU’s Rio Flush Fit system offers modern functionality
and features, while remaining sympathetic to a property’s country style.
Just outside the town of Sutton Coldfield, in
the Warwickshire countryside, is the village of
Lea Marston.
On the outskirts of the village lies a cluster of
older rural cottages called Paddys Row, which,
like many properties across the UK countryside,
often have unconventional layouts. This includes
period features such as exposed wood beams,
tiled floors and large open fireplaces.
A contemporary cottage look
One of the Paddys Row cottage owners wanted
to replace their property’s timber windows as
the frames had become worn out, impacting the
home’s thermal performance.
With the owners unsure about what replacement
windows to choose, they contacted Birminghambased
installer GL Glazing in early 2022 for their
recommendation. Their requirements were clear
– a frame and profile that while keeping with the
cottage’s original design and character, would
provide excellent thermal efficiency and security.
“Though homeowners expect security and energy
efficiency as standard, there were multiple
factors that marked out the Paddys Row project
as more complex than most,” explained Gary
Lynch, Managing Director at GL Glazing.
“For example, the cottage had an unusual layout,
including several different-sized window recesses
across the ground and first floors.
There were also 12 windows to be replaced in total,
with some facing the road, so we also needed to
ensure good acoustic performance too.”
Choosing the right product
With the homeowner’s requirements in mind and
the need to complete the project in a short period
of time, GL Glazing recommended REHAU’s Rio
Flush Fit system.
The solution’s clean lines, jointing options and
availability in a variety of colours and foils for
an authentic-looking finish was said to have
greatly influenced this decision, offering a highly
convincing alternative to wood.
Additionally, as the Rio is available in chamfered
and sculptured frames, it is a good match for both
new builds and, in the case of Paddys Row, period
properties requiring a more considered approach.
On GL Glazing’s advice, the cottage owners chose
Pearl Grey frames with welded joints, which
would provide a modern, understated look that
complements adjacent Paddys Row properties.
Alongside this, the specified frames enjoyed
a certified ‘A’ Windows Energy Rating and are
among the most thermally efficient on the market,
achieving 1.3 W/m 2 K thanks to glass widths of
28mm and 34mm.
These features are useful in cottages such as
those on Paddys Row which have low levels of
insulation that can lead to draughts and quicker
heat loss across the property.
Similarly, the Rio frames have the highest BSI
weather performance ratings for wind, air and
water, meaning they possess a durability often
beyond timber frames.
Combined with the fact they are virtually
maintenance-free and, unlike their wooden
counterparts, do not require treatment, they can offer
leading and consistent performance over its lifetime
with comparatively little effort from the homeowner.
Rio windows also offer a high level of security – a
key consideration for older properties in quieter
rural areas that can be targeted by thieves.
Specifically, they meet the stringent requirements
set out in PAS24, with accreditation to this
standard providing further assurance of high
security performance through an independent
testing process.
Furthermore, given the cottage’s location near
a busy through-road, the addition of 28mm and
34mm glass panels also greatly reduced the
noise created by passing traffic. As acoustic glass
also has the added benefit of being stronger than
SYSTEMS
Before...
...And after
standard double glazing, further assurances could
be given over the home’s security.
Alongside this, the Rio window profile itself
benefits from enhanced noise reduction qualities,
further improving occupant comfort.
Rising to the challenge
“The Paddys Row project was more involved
than typical domestic installations we usually
carry out,” said Gary. “The frames needed to be
designed with various recess sizes in mind, and
specified and installed in a short period.
“This is because the owners were still living in
the cottage throughout the refit, so it was vital
we chose frames that would be quick, simple and
non-invasive to install. The Rio, therefore, stood
out as an excellent frame to use for this project,
and so it proved – it only took us two days and 16
hours to install the new frames once the recesses
were measured and the parts were cut.
Though the fitting process itself was
straightforward, the cottage’s age also meant
that GL Glazing had to manage some unusual
“The cottage’s
traditional and
historic look was
very important to the
homeowners”
dimensions that are rarely found in the majority of
today’s homes, as Gary explained.
“The team had to work with some non-standard
window sizes, and some of the older windows
had deeper sills too, meaning everything had to
be measured and installed more meticulously
than your typical refit. As Rio frames are also
reinforced, we had to be very careful with the
cottage’s existing brickwork, making sure any
drilling maintained structural integrity and didn’t
damage the façade.
It’s difficult to say if an aluminium equivalent
would be as cooperative in a building of similar
age, so given the energy efficiency requirements,
polymer was a natural choice.”
Taking the project’s unique challenges into account,
the work was completed on time and to budget. As
a result, the Paddys Row cottage now has windows
that fit with the look of the surrounding area, to
the extent that the owners say neighbours often
compliment them on their new frames.
“The cottage’s traditional and historic look was
very important to the homeowners, so we’re
glad we were able to maintain that look while
upgrading their windows,” Gary explained.
“To hear that not only they are pleased with the
frames, but their neighbours are too, is therefore
a great bonus. Thanks to the Rio frames, this
project was carried out seamlessly, even with
the need to adapt windows to fit non-standard
openings. I definitely wouldn’t hesitate to contact
REHAU again for an installation with similar
requirements,” he concluded.
Fabricator Relationships
THE 'SELECTA' FEW
In the second part of our interview with Selecta Systems and what it means to be ‘part of
the family’, Sales Director Andy Green and Marketing Manager Mark Walker focus new
investments, and reveal what the company has is store for this year’s FIT Show.
Total Fabricator (TF): You mentioned in our last
issue that you have some planned investments
that could be ‘a game changer’. This all sounds
very exciting! Could you explain in more detail
what these investments are?
Mark Walker (MW): Firstly, we are launching two
brand new websites, one for the trade and one for
the homeowner.
Our current all-encompassing website generates
approximately 20-25 homeowner enquiries per
week, with the content striving to reflect the
requirements of all types of visitors. An internal
want to search, and also select which Selecta
product or range of products that they are
looking to enquire about or purchase.
A list of their local fabricators and
installers will show up alongside
a Google map, where all of their
contact details, direct link to
their website and also email
address is available. This enables
a homeowner to contact a local
fabricator / installer at their own
TF: The websites and the two features
sound impressive! What happens
to that enquiry once you have
received it?
MW: The whole point of this
homeowner engagement is to
generate sales leads for our
customers. We have a brandnew
interface for our customer
only portal, Connect, of which all
enquiries will come directly in to our
convenience.
dealer network section.
review of the website left us with the ideology that
we had tried to suit all visitors’ requirements, but
ended up confusing some visitors.
To go one further, a homeowner
also has the option to design their
own windows and doors with our
Andy Green
Once they land in our admin area of
the portal, it will show us the nearest
fabricator / installer to the enquiry.
fantastic Window and Door Designer! The
Therefore, we felt that separating the websites
We can then send this enquiry direct to the
designer has all of the Selecta range of products,
would enable ourselves to manage, control and
fabricator / installer, through the portal, of which
from casement, flush sash and tilt and turn
promote specifics better with each target audience.
it will land directly in to the customers own
windows through to residential, French, patio and
section of Connect for follow up.
Another reason for separating the websites was
EASi-FOLD doors.
to enable ourselves to promote the ADVANCE 70
The enquiry will have all the relevant product
We’ve also added in a range of composite doors,
brand direct to the homeowner. We feel that
imagery, customer information and details, which
so that the homeowner has a good range
this is an important factor in providing the
are presented in a professional document that
of products, styles and configurations to
consumer with the information that they
can be downloaded as a PDF. The fabricator /
choose from and improve their home.
require to ensue confidence in
installer can then utilise the enquiry to contact
the product, with the aim of
The homeowner can select a number the homeowner and carry out a survey.
directing enquiries to our
of window and door configurations
TF: Providing the fabricator / installer with
customers.
and styles, the internal and
solid sales leads can only be a good thing! Is
external colour, hardware colour
Sitting upon the homeowner’s
there anything else that it offers?
and other glazing options like
website will be two fabulous new
features. The first being a ‘Find a
offer a branded version of the window and door
The real beauty of this is that
Fabricator / Installer’ feature, where
they can also take a photo of their
installers will be available within a
how they would look! They can then generate their own sales leads directly and have
A homeowner can search a specific
area, define how far away they
version of the Connect portal.
SYSTEMS
They can have their own logo and contact
details contained within the package and also
emblazoned on all the relevant paperwork.
What’s also being added, is the ability to add
prices and provide professional quotes for
the homeowners. It really is a fantastic bit of
marketing kit if I do say so myself!
Andy Green (AG): We see this as a game changer
for fabricators and installers, as it’s the first of its
kind from a systems company.
It’s something you may have expected from a
super fabricator, but it’s not been done previously
by a systems company and that’s why we’re
excited about this whole project.
It takes our marketing support package to a
completely new level and that’s always been our
aim. That’s what being ‘part of the family’ means
for a fabricator and installer.
MW: Andy is right. This package certainly sets
us apart from our competitors and delivers a
marketing support package that will help our
customers win new business.
To compliment this, we can also offer a brand
new themed and branded website to sit along the
window and door designer.
This takes away the headache of a website
build, whilst also incorporating the ability to
have the window and door designer embedded
in to the site. This provides our customers with
a professional website and excellent sales lead
generation and presentation tool.
TF: So will this be on show at the FIT Show?
MW: It certainly is exciting and it’s been a project
that has been in progress for the last 18 months
or so. We can’t wait to unleash it and we will be
demoing it on our stand at FIT Show 2023.
Our aim is also to promote the homeowner website
and the Window and Door Designer through
homeowner dedicated social media platforms,
consumer-based online digital magazines and
newsletters. We really want to get engagement
from homeowners and provide customers with a
good volume of quality sales leads.
TF: Thank you for explaining what being ‘part
of the family’ means to everyone.
AG: Thank you for this opportunity to talk to you
and explain the whole concept and meaning to
being ‘part of the family’.
MW: Yes, thank you and we look forward to the
launch of our new marketing support package
and seeing you at the NEC for FIT Show 2023, on
ALITHERM 400 THE REAL DEAL
REAL Aluminium is offering customers the perfect balance of aesthetics and function with the
Alitherm 400 System.
Manufactured to incorporate a pre-gasketed system and quick glaze bead to optimise performance
and reduce installation times, Alitherm 400 is the first of its kind to be built into a thermally broken
aluminium system. The innovative design features polyamide thermal break technology, which works
by creating a thermal barrier between the cold air outside and the warm air inside. By reducing
thermal transmittance, this serves to enhance the overall U-value of the product. Additionally, the
system is rigorously tested to PAS 24:2022 as standard, and exceeds the requirements for both
weather resistance and security performance.
Phil Walker, Managing Director of REAL Aluminium, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer Alitherm 400 doors to our customers. The doors perfectly
complement the window range, offering the same stylish lines and ease of fabrication and installation.” https://re-aluminium.co.uk
REHAU INTRODUCES NEW TRIM RANGE
In response to growing customer demand, polymer supplier REHAU has introduced a new trim range to provide further
compatibility with its existing foil range.
The range includes Turner Oak, Midnight Black and Elephant Grey, which are colours not readily available from other trim suppliers, and it
has been bolstered to include 12 finishes. The new trims are available to order and are compatible with all REHAU window systems.
Russell Hand, Head of Product and Technical at REHAU Windows UK, commented: “We are continually looking for ways to offer our
customers more product choice and design flexibility. We identified a gap in the market in which popular window foils in our range,
Turner Oak for example, required matching trims. So, by expanding the portfolio to include such foils, customers can now source a
complete window package more easily than ever before. The new trims have been a huge success with an impressive number of orders coming through
already.” www.rehau.com/group-en
LISTERS LAUNCHES SMART WINDOW LOCK
Listers has added the new Superior high-performance bi-directional hook and shoot-bolt window
lock from Avantis, to its range.
Engineered to withstand more than 4.5 kilonewtons of end load, the PAS24 and Secured by Design
accredited mechanism is built around a unique bi-directional gearbox. Combined with the largest bidirectional
locking hooks of any window lock, reinforced keeps, plus high tolerance and adjustable mushroom
cams, the next generation locking mechanism delivers an enhanced level of security, compression and
weather sealing. Tested to 50,000 cycles and backed by a 10-year guarantee, it also fully integrates with
Kubu, the smart home security system, giving end-users real-time updates on the status and security of their homes.
Smart enabled, the Avantis Superior Lock uses the new Kubu floating window sensor. This determines if the window is opened, closed, secure or on a vent
setting. It also sends an alert to end-users if the window is forced or under attack. www.listerwindows.co.uk
VEKA SETS OUT ITS VISION FOR 2025
With Building Regulations set to change again in 2025, VEKA wants to reassure customers that they are
focused on preparing suitable solutions that will be effective across all market sectors and will meet all
required legislation.
Paul Kennington, VEKA Technical Director, said: “We need to fully understand what the consultations of this
year will bring. With results due in the spring, our team will be working hard to find fabricator friendly solutions to
the new legislation. The UK is experiencing hotter summers, which means that dark colours could be susceptible
to thermal movement. Even the smallest change will make a difference to a U-value. More storms during winter
months also mean that reinforcement is essential. We are taking time to ensure that we get this right. Our aim is to minimise the impact of these changes
for our customers by offering hassle free solutions.” https://vekauk.com
SYSTEMS
MAKING PART L SIMPLE AND COST EFFECTIVE
AluK says it is continuing its efforts to help customers comply with the new Part L rules as simply and cost effectively as
possible.
It is launching a Part L compliant version of its popular 58BD residential door system, with new foam inserts to deliver the
1.4 U-values required for new or existing buildings other than dwellings and replacement homes. There will be new pre-rolled
foam in the sash, and additional insulating foams underneath the glazing cavity. There will also be centre seal gaskets to
improve the thermal performance. In addition to that though, there will also be a brand-new material used for the low lamda
thermal break which will deliver enhanced thermal performance. Peter Willard, AluK Product Manager, explained: “All of our
product development around Part L has centred around achieving compliance through U-values, but always with the needs
of the fabricator firmly paramount. That’s why we are minimising the additional processes required for the new 58BD HI door
and delivering a solution which achieves real innovation with a new thermal break. The material we’re using is new to the
doors and windows market but widely proven in other sectors so it’s a no risk option.” https://uk.aluk.com/en-gb/products
OPEN UP YOUR ROOMS WITH VISOFOLD
For further updates, visit www.total-fabricator.co.uk
Tradelink’s Visofold 1000 Slim is said to deliver a range of benefits for the fabricator.
Featuring new slimmer profiles, the sightlines of Visofold 1000 have been reduced by 10mm to
122mm to make the glazed area even larger. Visofold can be used in domestic applications as either
an alternative to sliding doors in residential properties, or to open up an entire wall as part of a
conservatory; the system will make the most of a beautiful view or bring a garden into the home.
All Visofold profiles are said to feature a polyamide thermal break that enhances the thermal
performance of the profile and improves the overall U-value. Profiles feature EPDM high quality
gaskets and weather brushes to aid weather resistance. Visofold complies with the requirements of Building Regulations Document L 2010, while
security is assured by multi-point lock mechanisms on main opening sashes, and shoot-bolt locking on floating mullions. https://tradelinkdirect.com
STELLAR TRANSFORMS DAY CARE CENTRE
Kurt Greatrex (pictured) founded Dekko Window
Systems with Gary Torr in 2008.
Stellar aluminium windows have been used in a refurbishment of Victoria Lodge, a day service for
adults with learning disabilities and older people, in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.
Phil Parry, Business Development Director at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Stellar was developed
predominately as a domestic system but, as this refurbishment project shows, it has clear commercial
advantages too.”
The project involved the manufacture of 16 Stellar Flush Casement Windows with the glazing units
featuring laminated glass to maximise safety. The exterior faces were powder coated in moss green, RAL
6005M, to replicate the colour of the original timber windows, with white internal faces to complement
internal décor. www.epwinwindowsystems.co.uk
TRICKLING THROUGH INTO THE MARKET
The Residence Collection has announced a brand-new product, a concealed trickle vent cover, in line
with new legislation and tested in accordance with BS EN 13141-1.
The concealed trickle vents are specifically designed to fit with The Residence Collection’s R9, R7, R2
profile, including powder coated and foil finish, to ensure they are as hidden and concealed as possible. The
concealed trickle vent cover will be available to all fabricators and installers of The Residence Collection.
Sarah Hitchings, Sales and Marketing Director at The Residence Collection, commented: “We’re all very
Marketing & Branding
BUILDING UP THE BRAND
Emma Fowlds, Marketing Executive at Distinction Doors, discusses the steps you can take to
ensure your company creates the right brand and connects with customers...
Marketing comes in two guises – brand
building and marketing activation.
Brand building is long term and is about
making sure your brand is known. Activation is
more short term. It’s promotions, events and
campaigns which drive short term results.
For effective marketing a good marketer will do
both. The balance depends on the target audience.
In the past, research from Binet and Field has
indicated that B2B should be a 50/50 split, while
B2C is ideally 60/40 in favour of brand building.
Brand building
Last year we cemented our position as a premium
brand with the launch of our new brand identity.
This followed independent customer and market
research. Since then, we have concentrated on
brand building and raising consumer awareness
for the benefit for our customers.
Our objective is for consumers to be aware
of Distinction Doors and to recognise it as a
premium composite door brand. Ultimately, we
want our name to be synonymous with quality.
To achieve this, we have embraced media
diversity. We have upped the number of channels
we use and engage with and made radical
changes to our marketing collateral.
Premium product brochure
For this to happen, it is essential that we arm our
customers with the right tools.
Our product brochure was the first marketing
asset to be introduced following the re-brand.
The style, format and content are distinctly
different to the more familiar product directory
brochure, a deliberate and brave move.
The brochure has been extremely well received by
our customers, our customer’s customers, and
end-users.
“Lifestyle images are essential for
showing products in a relatable situation”
The feedback has been exceptional – from
customers speaking with us direct to consumers
sharing on social media.
With each new print run we have reviewed, and
in some instances, refreshed the content to
maximise its potential.
Brochure updates
Last month the third version landed. This
updated product brochure continues to reflect the
premium quality of our product.
Colour and image reproduction
To maximise our image quality and our colours
and woodgrain effect we have partnered with a
printer that specialises in colour reproduction on
uncoated paper.
Emma Fowlds
The result is clearer and sharper photographs,
graphics and colours throughout. We have also
maintained the reader friendly A4 format on
uncoated FSC certified paper for a premium look
and feel.
New lifestyle images
Lifestyle images are essential for showing products
in a relatable situation. Good lifestyle product
photography should help bring a product to life
and enable consumers to visualise it better. Often,
consumers project themselves into the scene.
Lifestyle photography is often aspirational, but it
should always be authentic and provide in-use
context. Context makes the product more real and
convincing which can help it sell.
We have supplied our customers with countless
high-quality images over the years.
More recently, demand has risen as content is
consumed quickly by digital marketing.
Support
To support our customers, we have invested in new
lifestyle images which feature in the brochure.
Curated to inspire, each image shows a different
door style in a different setting – outdoor
living, hybrid working, boot room, modern build
entrance, and modern entrance hall.
The new images are available upon request from
the Distinction Doors marketing team. Distinction
customers can also order brochures through the
online ordering platform, or a digital copy can be
downloaded from our website.
Door Systems
CREATING A DOMESTIC ID
Ash Pearson, Sales Manager at Jack Aluminium, discusses the ID30, the latest addition to
the specialist aluminium systems supplier’s range for the domestic market.
Hot on the heels of the launch of our
SD70 heritage style aluminium door and
screening system for external applications,
our new ID30 not only creates one internal
system that could be used for a full range of door
opening designs, but it offers incredible flexibility
when it comes to design.
ID30 has been purposely engineered for
interior use and is suitable for both domestic
and commercial projects – perfect for office
partitions, artists’ studios, separating open plan
kitchen-diners, or simply replacing traditional
timber internal door sets.
The same profile can be used to fabricate a
versatile range of configurations of doors,
including single- or double-hinged doors; sliding
doors; pivot doors; and bi-folding doors.
The system offers minimal sightlines with no
extra bulk or clunkiness, which often comes with
external or more traditional systems.
Locking mechanisms are housed within the
slim door stile, using specially designed
mounting kits which feature clever, 3D-printed
componentry. All hinges are concealed for an
incredibly sleek finish. Soft close and soft open
options are also available, as well as a wide
range of RAL colours – creating the perfect
internal aluminium glazing system that is fast
to fabricate and easy to install. Just as you’d
expect from Jack Aluminium.
We’ve done everything we can to make ID30
an easy add-on product to open doors into
the internal commercial fit-out market and to
help installers win more work from domestic
projects. It’s the perfect complementary
product to our SD70 slimline external doors, so
homeowners can get heritage styling – inside
and out.
ID30
Why choose heritage?
After speaking to customers and looking into
growing interior trends, ID30 was born. Current
trends are telling us that more homeowners,
architects and interior designers are looking
to install slimline, heritage-style screening in
interior spaces as a way of maintaining high
levels of natural light, while creating different,
high-end aesthetic ‘zones’.
It’s apparent in the research, too. The 2023
Rated People Home Improvement Trends Report
showed that interest in open plan has fallen
by 26% and is, instead, being replaced by the
trend for ‘broken-plan’ – which is a perfect fit
for the internal glazed screen market.
The launch of this new internal glazing system
therefore comes at an optimum time for
fabricators and installers, who are looking to get
ahead in these new markets.
Why Jack Aluminium Systems?
When Jack Aluminium began, we had a
laser-sharp focus on making life easier for
the whole commercial aluminium system
supply chain – delivering a better, faster and
more friendly service to customers. We offer
value-engineered, high-performance products,
with extensive technical support and fast
turnarounds, which has been replicated with the
supply of our domestic aluminium range.
SD70
This was demonstrated in our flagship product,
TD68. We invested heavily in TD68, to ensure
it met PAS 24:2016 standards, as well as
additional PAS 24 testing on door sets with
different configurations, access options and
hardware combinations. It also achieved
STS202 status, making it one of the most secure
aluminium commercial doors on the market.
As such, our commercial range grew to
encompass products, such as the JCW curtain
walling suite and JD47 non-thermal system.
However, customers wanted more and the
development of our TW70 window proved to be
a pivotal point for the Jack Aluminium range,
which allowed us to extend the many benefits of
our systems to the domestic market.
Applying the principles of our commercial
aluminium service to our domestic products
enables customers to do more and now we
are seeing fabricator-installers approaching
us specifically about our domestic products,
proving the high demand for aluminium glazing
systems delivered with great levels of service,
the Jack Aluminium way.
KEEPING STANDARDS HIGH
Quickslide has been awarded its CHAS certificate of accreditation, said to be the construction
industry’s leading standard of health and safety accreditation in procurement.
CHAS – the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme – is the UK’s third-party
guarantee of a company’s high standards of health and safety competence.
Quickslide underwent a thorough CHAS assessment of its health and safety management systems
before being awarded the standard and issued with certification and the CHAS logo to display.
The certificate and logo demonstrate proof of compliance against the CHAS standards in line with
the requirements of Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) and UK health and safety legislation,
and it is valid for one year.
Ben Weber, Quickslide MD, said: “CHAS has been around a long time and is well regarded in our
industry. This accreditation recognises our commitment to high standards of health and safety, and gives assurance that we meet all the required standards
and comply with current legislation.”
Advertorial: Metal Technology
THE 'NEXT GENERATION'
Total Fabricator finds out more about Metal Technology’s product portfolio which encompasses
over 30 window, door, curtain walling, brise soleil and louvre systems, with two high
performance ‘next generation’ products recently certified by the Passive House Institute...
Since 1985, Metal Technology has been
defining spaces through its architectural
glazing solutions and has grown to become
one of the UK and Ireland’s leading designers
and suppliers of bespoke aluminium window,
door, curtain wall and solar shading systems for
commercial and residential applications.
Building a sustainable future
Dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint, Metal
Technology is committed to reducing its scope
1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by
2030, as well as measuring and reducing its
scope 3 GHG emissions.
Metal Technology is also certified to BES6001 for
responsible sourcing of construction products
and through its ISO14001 environmental quality
accreditation, the company has been able
to reduce the impact of its operations on the
environment year on year.
Following on from the installation of solar panels
in 2014, the company is introducing an additional
100KW system this year, with a programme to
enhance this further in 2024. All company vehicles
ordered from 2022 will be fully electric or hybrid,
and any electricity sourced is from a green energy
source, further demonstrating Metal Technology’s
long-term commitment to the built environment.
Product range
Metal Technology’s product portfolio
encompasses over 30 window, door, curtain
walling, brise soleil and louvre systems. Its
Thermally Enhanced (Hi+) portfolio offers the
designer a wide and diverse choice of profiles
that provide structural integrity, weather
performance, thermal enhancement and security.
The introduction of its new Passive House range
is further testament of Metal Technology’s
commitment to the built environment. The
Passive House Institute has certified System
5-45 Hi+ Window and System 17 Hi+ Curtain
Walling, with the latter achieving the highest
ranking of A+. Further Passive House products
are under development as the company continues
its drive to reduce its carbon footprint on the road
to Net Zero.
Projects
Contracted for many commercial schemes
throughout the UK, Metal Technology has
supplied its architectural glazing systems for
developments such as: CABI’s stunning low
energy headquarters in Wallingford; Brinell
Building, the BREEAM Excellent rated contemporary
office space in Brighton city centre; the awardwinning
CDE Global headquarters in Cookstown;
the Halo Enterprise and Innovation Centre (HEIC),
part of the £63m brownfield urban regeneration
project by HALO Urban Regeneration Company
and Wolverhampton’s BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated
i9 Building which picked up Best Commercial
Development at the RICS West Midlands Awards,
and is now home to the Ministry of Housing,
Communities and Local Government.
This year saw the opening of SuperLab in Oxford,
for which Metal Technology supplied a range of
its high-performance glazing products. Providing
much needed lab space and facilities for the next
generation of science innovators, the purposebuilt
building by Robin Swailes Design and
Development provides a modern work space with
green credentials. Metal Technology’s systems
were also installed in the Port of Leith Distillery, a
40-metre-tall Scotch Whisky distillery located in
Edinburgh’s historic port of Leith.
Metal Technology has applied its expertise in
close collaboration with designers to deliver
financially economic yet technically robust
solutions for the healthcare sector. The company
supplied its high-performance glazing systems
for the National Treatment Centre for NHS
Highland, an ‘exemplar’ healthcare facility
for ophthalmology and orthopaedic surgery
in Inverness, and Metal Technology’s high
performance glazing systems were also utilised
in the new Clydebank Health Centre built on the
site of the former John Brown’s shipyard. The
£21.7m landmark building offers the Clydebank
community access to a wide range of health
and social care services under one roof. With
47,000 registered patients, the facility houses
300 NHS staff and boasts the latest in digital and
medical technology. Metal Technology has also
been appointed for the prestigious, £233m Baird
Family Hospital and Anchor Centre healthcare
project in Aberdeen for NHS Grampian.
Metal Technology has vast experience of providing
fenestration solutions for over 1,000 universities,
colleges and schools throughout the UK. The
company was a key supplier in a number of
recently completed projects within the education
sector: the landmark £41m Health Innovation One
building at Lancaster University; the innovative
£69m Barony Campus, Scotland’s biggest
school; the 1,480 bed £130m University of York
flagship student accommodation campus and
Madras College, Fife’s new ‘Platinum Standard’
sustainable school (pictured above).
AUTOMATION
BE CONFIDENT WITH COLOUR
Holding too much stock is seen as not good for business, but did you know there is a
simple way around it? Total Fabricator talks to First Degree Systems’
Sales Manager Greg Beachim to find out more.
Managing stock levels has become a key
pressure point for window fabricators in
recent years, as business owners juggle
the demands placed upon them.
Demand for high value products, including flush
casements and foiled profile; uncertainty in the
supply chain; customer demand for shorter lead
times – all of these can translate into growing
stock levels, which can add further pressures to
a business, argues First Degree Systems’ Sales
Manager Greg Beachim.
“Despite initial worries of demand falling off a
cliff at the start of 2023, window companies and
their suppliers have adjusted their offering to
meet the changing demands from homeowners,”
he explained.
“Business owners will tell you that if they have
seen a reduction in orders, this has been more
than made up by the demand for high value
products. The downside to this is extra pressure
this places on stock levels.
Greg Beachim
“If you are over-stocked, then that can tie up
thousands of pounds – money that can be
invested elsewhere in the business. That space
can also be used to manufacture those highervalue
products.”
Greg explained that all window fabricators that
use Window Designer from Cyncly Group company
First Degree Systems to process their designs
have access to Stock Assistant, which links the
information already entered into the software to
the stock holding.
“So, as you place an order with a manufacturing
date, Stock Assistant will pre-allocate your
product,” he continued. “That will raise a demand
for a given product, and then push it through to
what you order. “The net result is that you will
only order what you need to the timescales that
have been laid out by your production dates.
“Coupled with the Barcode Tracking System, stocks
can also be automatically downgraded as they’re
being used, reducing labour costs, reducing human
error, and simplifying the whole process.”
Greg explains that while many fabricators are
increasing their colour offering – to meet the
increased demand from homeowners – this added
pressure can be managed by Window Designer.
Continued from page 42
“Standard colours are straightforward, because
you have a good idea of what requirements are
going to come through the door,” he said.
“But when we look at non-standard colours,
there’s no point guessing. The reality is that trends
change. So, what might be a banana yellow job
today might be a sky-blue job tomorrow. Why hold
stock of those?”
COME AND SEE US AT FIT
We talk to Ron Crowl, General Manager for the Window, Door & Glass vertical
at Cyncly, to find out what’s in store for visitors to it’s FIT Show stand.
Window Designer, Greg explained, not only
manages stock holding according to demand, but
also builds in the cost of potential waste.
“With standard colours, you want to make sure
your prices are keen, so Window Designer will
optimise the lengths and keep enough stock to be
reactive to demand,” he continued.
“With non-standard colours, the whole pack price
is taken into account when pricing orders. This
means that window fabricators can confidently
price jobs with unusual colours without worrying
that any profits will be tied up in unused stock.”
“What might be a
banana yellow job
today might be a skyblue
job tomorrow”
Efficiencies like this are key for window fabricators
to remain agile in an ever-changing market, Greg
argued, while keeping a close eye on cash flow.
“If you access our software via a subscription
model, there are several tools that you can add
as you grow your business. And the benefit of the
subscription model is that you only ever pay for
those modules once you need them.
“We are looking to bring on new product
developments and innovations as we grow Cyncly
in the UK,” he continued. “We’ll be explaining how
and at the FIT Show. Come and talk to us on stand
Cyncly is the new international powerhouse
behind a portfolio of software products
developed for the window, door and glass
industry in the UK.
Cyncly’s brands include First Degree Systems,
SoftTech, FeneTech, and Contract ERP. On
Stand Q15 at the FIT Show, they will be talking
to customers and the wider industry about how
they can help them achieve their goals.
“Our new brand, Cyncly, unites us and
encompasses our passion to drive innovation to
enable our customers to be more successful,”
Cyncly’s General Manager of Windows, Doors &
Glass Ron Crowl said. “We are transforming the
way our customers do business, enabling them
to simplify complexity, grow sales, increase
efficiency, and drive innovation.
“Bringing together best-in-industry solutions
from all our brands, Cyncly helps everyone
in the value chain make their work and the
outcomes for their customers amazing.”
For many window fabricators, the Window
Designer product range from Cyncly company
First Degree Systems is the engine that drives
their operations. Users typically purchase the
software via a subscription model, and add
modules as their business grows.
“For example, a small start-up may just have
a chop saw and maybe three or four people
on the shop floor,” Ron explained. “They will
want to start with a simple configurator, but
as they grow, we have a product suite we
can customise that will allow them to work
smarter. This could include improved stock
management, increased workflow, and better
customer management.”
Ron explained that by drawing on the expertise
in the rest of the group, Window Designer
users will have access to a broad new product
offering that will complement their existing
fenestration software.
“And that’s what we can’t wait to talk about
at the FIT Show,” Ron continued. “Product
improve efficiencies, and maximise margin.”
Dave Thomas, CEO of Haffner, said: “We have been working with FOM since 2019 and
we are now the UK’s largest distributor of its cutting-edge aluminium machinery range.
Our relationship has gone from strength to strength, resulting in this strategic move.
“FOM has the same business pedigree and ambition as we do. It has plans in place
to double the size of its production space as part of its continued growth strategy.
“We are looking forward to being an even closer UK partner to the company as it
continues its trajectory.”
Speaking on the new strategic partnership, Stefano Beraldi, Export Manager of Fom
Industrie, added: “Thanks to the fast-growing business relationship with Haffner, we
are aiming to further reinforce our market presence in UK fenestration.
“The combination of Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie hi-tech products will ensure Haffner remains the strongest player in the field of aluminium and
BOOST EFFICIENCIES WITH PST'S VIRTUAL SHOPFLOOR
Efficiency is said to be at the core of any successful fabrication business,
which is why many in the industry are already seeing the benefits of Virtual
Shopfloor, a unique and powerful manufacturing software from Production
Software Technology (PST) that can help achieve a flat pack rate of 97%.
Compatible with a wide range of glazing products, Virtual Shopfloor is a
manufacturing-based software that allows fabricators to choose from a library of 3D
model templates or create custom designs from scratch using the free form tool.
All designs are bespoke to the products they manufacture, and can be built on
using easy to use drag and drop tools. Manufacturing and installation reports can
then be generated with the option to send instructions directly to CNC machinery.
PST Managing Director Neil Travers explained: “Virtual Shopfloor has been
designed with many benefits for modern fabricators – these include the transfer
of cutting instructions directly from the platform to the saw interface by creating
various saw driver output files, as well as an instant costing feature that allows for
the customisation of pricing using a simple matrix and the inclusion of extra costs
such as labour and site costs.
“The software also comes with an integrated reporting suite, allowing fabricators to create branded sales and survey reports, as well as numerous
manufacturing reports such as full-spec small parts drawings, top cap cutting templates, and customisable hardware printouts.
“Essentially, Virtual Shopfloor eliminates the need for fabricators to use various software programs at once, giving them everything they need in one
place, creating a seamless workflow from sales and survey right through to manufacturing.
“With industry-leading flat pack rates, a dramatic drop in trial build rates and substantial annual savings, Virtual Shopfloor is widely recognised as the
de-facto solution for the glazing industry, and in today’s competitive market, is the ultimate tool to help fabricators get ahead.” www.pstonline.co.uk
SETTING DEBAR HIGH
Total Fabricator caught up with Peter Sutcliffe, Managing Director of bi-fold hardware
manufacturer Debar, to discuss the company’s background, navigating supply chain
challenges, and the importance of customer support and collaboration...
Total Fabricator (TF): Tell us a bit about Debar...
Peter Sutcliffe (PS): Debar was incepted in 2008,
in a small lock-up unit in Bradford. Initially we
started trading with just handles and locks, but
started the development and launch of our A1
DeWall system around 2009.
After this launch in 2010, we started to develop
hardware for other systems within the UK market.
One key moment that stands out was in 2015,
when we were awarded the Best in Show award at
GlassBuild show Atlanta, USA.
Some other key parts of our business include
in-house manufacturing of previously purchased
overseas products to provide better service and
control supply chain – CNC introduction – in
2017, while we moved into new, 45,000 sq. ft,
larger premises in the same year, which then gave
us more space to increase the amount of CNC
machines on site which were purchased in 2018.
In 2021, we further expanded premises to include a
dedicated, 25,000 sq. ft warehouse and distribution
facility, and just last year we introduced a 5-stage
pre-treatment powder coating plant.
TF: What have been the big changes within the
industry over the last 15 years and how has
Debar adapted to meet these developments?
PS: We work within an extremely competitive
industry, but at Debar we feel we have a unique
way to market by allowing fabricators to buy direct
from manufacturer. Fabricators want bottom rolling
systems for ease of installation and longevity
which our system has this from the outset.
Testing requirements have become more prevalent
due to both legislation and consumer expectations,
and all of our products are tested to exceed
industry standards.
Peter (second from right) with the Debar team
Systems houses and fabricators are becoming
more dependent on the technical capability of
the manufacturer to take the lead on meeting UK
legislation such as U-values. Debar has a wealth of
technical expertise to meet these requirements and
have done so multiple times over the years
There has been a consumer transition from PVC
to aluminium-based bi-fold door systems. PVC
fabricators are looking for specific knowledge in
terms of fabrication, installation and commercial
expertise. Debar offers a handholding experience
for those looking to make such a transition.
TF: Can you tell us about some of the more
interesting projects your products have been
used on, or the projects you’re really proud to
have been involved with?
PS: As a manufacturer supplying in the main to
fabricators, we do not often get to see the end
results unfortunately. What we do get to see,
however, makes us immensely proud! As we have
grown, we have seen an increase in systems
house approaches. This creates new bespoke
projects which are always interesting. Offering our
technical expertise and working closely from initial
discussion through the design and development to
delivering the needs is always interesting. This is
what we live and breathe.
We have helped numerous systems houses along
the way and we would welcome the opportunity to
work with many more in the future. A positive for
the companies that have taken on Debar’s offering
is that we have seen many examples of rapid,
extraordinary growth, and we have often been
credited by them as being fundamental to that.
TF: The last couple of years have seen huge
challenges for both manufacturers and
fabricators – how have you had to adapt your
offering to meet your customers’ demands?
PS: The last couple of years have seen challenges
for everyone in our industry. From the uncertainty of
initial lockdown, no business could have forecast
what was going to happen. The key for Debar was
understanding how to manage the titanic increase
in demand. It certainly was not easy, from having
the extended lead times from our supply chain all
the way through to finding labour was a fight. But
it was a fight for all in our industry also, so it was
not a time to sit back and see the benefits of sales
without sacrifice. In essence, we were in constant
communication with our customers, transparent
with our capacities and, more importantly,
explaining how we were working hard behind the
scenes to meet their demands.
Because we have such close relationships with
them, between us we were able to manage the
increases while all the time investing in new
technology to increase both efficiencies and capacity.
TF: Some of the issues around supply and
lead times on products, as well as volatility in
pricing within the supply chain still remain – so
how do you plan to support your customers
through a potentially turbulent 2023?
HARDWARE & ACCESSORIES
PS: We are constantly challenging and reviewing
supply chain to maintain supply at the best
lead times possible. We want to maintain an
open dialogue and be transparent with our
customers. Debar has a reputation of reliance
and dependability and we will work hard to keep
this throughout 2023. We also want to continue
to invest heavily within the business to meet best
practice and further improve our lead times with
new machinery and technology.
We also want to try and stay close to the market
to keep abreast of developments and expectations
that may impact upon our service.
TF: What does the ideal fabricator look like in
today’s ever-changing world and how can you
support them to develop and grow?
PS: An ideal fabricator is willing to collaborate
with Debar to explore new opportunities and find
innovative solutions to their challenges. This
requires a fabricator that recognises the benefits in
collaborating with manufacturers to embrace new
ideas, as well as a commitment to ongoing learning
and development.
Debar’s approach of providing constant training
and support to our customers is an effective way
of building strong relationships and ensuring
that our customers are well-equipped to take
advantage of new opportunities as they arise.
By investing in our technical sales managers,
technical team, and service engineers, Debar is
able to provide expert guidance and assistance
to fabricators who are looking to expand their
capabilities and explore new systems.
TF: The homeowner is more knowledgeable
about the products and materials installed on
their properties – has this put pressure on the
supply chain, or does the greater interest and
understanding of what they want make things
easier for manufacturers and fabricators?
PS: The increased knowledge of homeowners has
helped develop the industry and give credibility
to those manufacturers that invest their time to
ensure their products meet the highest industry
standards. Debar is proud to be a British
manufacturer that ensures all of our bi-fold
hardware is developed to the highest standards
which will always exceed industry standards.
TF: Are there any particular trends with regards
to hardware design you’re recognising within
the market, and where do you see the growth
moving forward?
PS: We have seen a move towards slimmer
sightlines to make products look more aesthetically
pleasing. This has raised challenges which Debar,
along with our talented technical team, have
embraced and subsequently become the go-to
partner for such needs.
Current and future U-value requirements have
brought more enquiries Debar’s way due to our
expertise within the bifold market. We have, again,
successfully managed to meet the expectations of
partners.
We have also seen a trend for bigger, heavier doors
that are architectural statements. We are able to
design and manufacture hardware that has been
tested to meet up to 220kg per leaf and stands up
to 5m tall!
TF: Sustainability is a topic of ever-growing
importance to fabricators and increasingly for
installers and end-users. What does sustainability
mean to Debar and how do you see it impacting
the supply chain in the coming years?
PS: One of our main aims at Debar is zero
waste. By implementing zero-waste practices in
production and processes, Debar can reduce the
amount of waste generated during manufacturing
and minimize its environmental footprint.
The use of compactors and briquetting machines
to recycle waste further underscores Debar’s
commitment to sustainability, as it ensures that
any waste generated is diverted from landfills and
instead reused or recycled, thereby reducing the
environmental impact of the manufacturing process.
At Debar we endeavour to source products locally
which is another effective way to minimize
the environmental impact of the supply chain.
Local sourcing reduces transportation costs and
emissions associated with shipping products long
distances. Additionally, local sourcing can help to
support local economies and reduce dependence
on foreign suppliers, which can be important during
times of disruption in the global supply chain.
TF: What do you see as the main ambitions for
the company over the next couple of years?
PS: Our primary ambition is to continue to support
the growth of both fabricators and system houses
by committing to excellent customer service,
developing cutting-edge systems that align with
market trends, and being readily available to assist
their customers.
By continuing to invest in research and
development and providing ongoing support and
training to our customers, Debar is well-positioned
to remain a leader in the industry and drive growth
and success for their partners both in the UK and
globally.
Locking Systems
A FLEXIBLE OPTION
David Jennings, CEO of UAP, discusses his company’s new addition to its
range of locking systems with the launch of Flexi Lock.
Established in 1996, UAP is a hardware and
locking systems manufacturer for doors and
fenestration, providing products for installation
in both domestic and commercial environments.
The company has continued to expand its product
range with the launch of Flexi Lock.
Thanks to its design, the multi-point lock can be
paired with a vast range of rose handles, offering
fabricators, installers, and consumers more
choice and flexibility.
“The popularity of rose handles is growing rapidly,
especially in the new build market,” explained
David Jennings, CEO of UAP.
“From our own research, we know that more
customers want to use these handles on front
doors to match interiors and provide a more
contemporary appearance throughout a property.
“In response, we wanted to develop a multi-point
lock with more design freedom. The Flexi Lock
is compatible with lever handles on rose as well
as traditional handles on a backplate, providing
a highly flexible solution which also maximises
security and reliability.”
Keeping it simple
Launched under UAP’s Fullex brand, the Flexi
Lock is suitable for timber, composite and
aluminium doors with a 45mm lock backset.
Ideal with 1* or 3* cylinder, it has a non-handed
easily reversible latch. Quick and easy to install,
the Flexi Lock is prepared in the same way as the
Fullex XL Crimebeater lock.
UAP’s high security escutcheon is also available
with the Flexi Lock. Designed to colour match the
door handle, this further enhances aesthetics.
Security features include a bevelled edge, making
it a lot more difficult to grip the escutcheon with
pliers to pull it off, and high tensile strength fixing
bolts, which secure the escutcheon to the door.
Creating options
In line with the latest design trends, UAP has
bolstered its range of door handles with several
new additions, which can all be paired with the
Flexi Lock.
Introduced by UAP’s Intelligent Hardware brand,
the new products include the ‘Calla’, ‘Fern’ and
‘Lyra’ lever handles on round rose as well as the
‘Ava’ lever handles on square rose.
Designed in-house and following customer
feedback on shapes and styles, the range is
targeted at the high-end residential sector. Each
handle features a contemporary design and is
available in a variety of finishes, including a new
matt black option plus polished chrome,
satin chrome, and gun metal grey.
The handles have been developed to
operate with the lift and lock function,
which has been made possible thanks
to a mechanism created by UAP’s
design team.
Other handles in the range offering the
lift and lock function, and which can
be used with the Flexi Lock, include the
Enterprise, Jade, Ruby, Falcon, and Truro,
plus the Ventura, a range targeted at the
developer market, and the Nevis stainless
steel range.
Each handle can be purchased with
matching accessories and comes with a
five-year guarantee.
One for all
“Innovation is at the heart of UAP,
enabling us to keep evolving our range
and meet the changing needs of our
customers,” added David.
“The Flexi Lock is the latest example
of this proactive approach.
“Cost effective and affordable, it
provides one multi-point lock to
secure every type of door and
eliminates any design constraints.
“Combined with our recently
expanded range of lever on rose door
handles, the Flexi Lock means fabricators can
offer their customers a high quality, versatile
design which improves the security of a front
door and meets different lifestyles.
“Customers can be
assured of high stock
levels, fast deliveries,
and technical support”
“When choosing our products, customers
can also be assured of high stock levels, fast
deliveries, and technical support and guidance.”
The Flexi Lock also comes with a 10-year
mechanical warranty and a free registration
scheme.
SPRING HAS SPRUNG AT VBH
Hardware manufacturer VBH is offering a sprung lever on rose for aluminium residential and bi-fold doors.
The handle, which is part of the greenteQ Aspire range, is available in eight colours of the greenteQ Suite
of matching residential door, patio door and window furniture. As such, all finishes are covered by the
comprehensive greenteQ 10-year surface and performance guarantee.
VBH Marketing Manager, Gary Gleeson, said: “The lever is manufactured from grade 304 stainless steel, which is
a fittingly high quality material for top end doors, but is, of course, very heavy. Our greenteQ designers paid a lot of
attention to ensuring that the perfect strength spring was required. It’s a fine balance between preventing droop and
not having it snap to 90° too strongly. With the continued and increasing popularity of aluminium doors, it’s important that we continue to bring in new products to
suit. The Aspire Sprung Lever is just one of many products within our range that has been designed specifically for this end of the market.” www.vbhgb.com
MILA'S NEW HERITAGE DOOR HANDLE WITH A TWIST
Fire Safety Glass
SUSTAINABLE SAFETY
With an increased focus on sustainability, Andy Lake, Sales Director UK & IRE at Pyroguard,
explores how fire safety glass can deliver far more than just fire protection…
Given the focus on reducing our buildings’
operational carbon emissions, a mission
that has become even more prevalent
with the recent rising fuel costs,
increased emphasis is being placed
on the thermal performance of building
products. As a result, fabricators are being
tasked with making glazing systems work
harder – but what about fire safety glass?
Fire safety glass is a crucial component in many
buildings, from commercial, education and
leisure buildings, to multi-occupancy residential
developments. Its importance lies in its ability to
serve as part of a passive fire protection strategy.
Fire safety glass can act as a barrier that divides
a building into fire-safe compartments, helping to
prevent the spread of a fire, allow a safe route of
escape for occupants and facilitate a safe means
of access for the emergency services.
However, while fire safety glass is a critical
material from a fire performance position, what
“Glazing fabricators play a crucial role in
improving the energy efficiency of buildings”
about its energy efficiency when fabricated into
a wider system? With the correct specification
advice, it is possible for fabricators to create a
multi-functional system combining both thermal
performance and fire protection, amongst other
characteristics.
Take warm edge spacers as an example, used in
all insulated glazing units to separate the glass
panes and reduce the thermal bridge between
the glass edge and window frame or façade
profile. As well as saving thermal heat loss, it
also reduces the risk of condensation at the
GLASS PROCESSING & SEALED UNITS
glass edge. In fire safe IGUs, however, these
spacers are commonly manufactured from steel
or aluminium due to the need for the material to
retain its strength in the event of a fire. Of course,
while metal offers strength it is also an incredibly
conductive material, adversely affecting the
thermal performance of a glazing system.
Fortunately, thanks to recent market
developments and new test evidence to BS EN
1364, there are now warm edge spacers available
that can enable the fabrication of thermally
efficient, fire safety glass systems.
Hybrid construction
For example, a recent partnership between
Pyroguard and Technoform has resulted in
a successful test programme featuring the
Technoform SP14 spacer, which has a hybrid
construction of precision engineered polypropylene
and steel. The SP14 offers thermal properties,
while the inclusion of steel offers the necessary
structural stability and durability in fire situations.
There are other ways that the efficiency of a fire
safety glass system can be enhanced, such as
incorporating coated glass panes into the system.
The Technoform SP14 spacer
Although glass is a popular material for
construction and design, valued by architects for
its ability to create light, open and contemporary
spaces, it can also create something of a
greenhouse effect if used incorrectly. This is
especially true in applications such as atriums
or curtain walling systems, where the glass is
exposed to sunlight and UV rays. Understandably,
this is something that is to be avoided, not only
because it creates an uncomfortable indoor
environment for occupants, but also the energy
and cost required to regulate the temperature
back to a more comfortable level.
This is an example of where the multifunctionality
of fire safety glass can come into
play. With the correct specification advice, it’s
possible to add additional counterpanes into
a glazing system, with these panes delivering
various qualities and characteristics, from
improved acoustics and built-in privacy, to solar
control. By incorporating a counterpane with a
specialist coating into the wider system, these
issues can be mitigated, with sunlight able to
pass through the glass, while a large portion of
the sun’s heat is simultaneously reflected away.
Glazing fabricators play a crucial role in
improving the energy efficiency of buildings, as
part of all our broader efforts to help protect the
environment.
While fire safety glass is first and foremost a
product designed to protect, with the correct
technical expertise it is possible to achieve so
much more, balancing fire protection with
energy efficiency.
IGU Automation
GLASS PROCESSING & SEALED UNITS
THE KEY TO STABILITY
Tony Palmer, Edgetech’s Head of Sales, makes the case for automation as a way for IGU
manufacturers to modernise their businesses in an uncertain economic climate.
The last few years have been a peculiar time
for the glazing industry.
On the one hand, the industry has remained
strong, with the post-COVID home improvement
boom being one of the busiest periods for
fenestration in recent memory.
Yet, despite the strong sales, IGU manufacturers
have also faced unprecedented challenges.
Companies have been hit by materials shortages,
price rises, and inflation.
Additionally, the UK continues to grapple with a
skills shortage which has made the competition
for talent fiercer and recruitment very
difficult. These factors, combined with
ongoing supply chain disruptions, have
resulted in a difficult environment for IGU
manufacturers to operate in.
I believe that these challenges explain why
Edgetech has noticed a significant surge in
interest in automation. Whilst automated spacer
application lines have been available for some
time, many more IGU manufacturers now
consider it a more reliable alternative to the
traditional, labour-based model.
The benefits of automation
Industries of all kinds are now increasingly
embracing automation. The World Economic
Forum expects that by 2025 only 53% of work
will be done by humans, with 47% completed
by machines, leading to the expectation that the
demand by the global market for automation
technology will increase by billions of dollars over
the course of the decade.
The possible gains IGU manufacturers can expect
by automating their processes are substantial.
Automated lines can continuously apply flexible
spacer more quickly and efficiently, and to a
consistently higher standard than by manually
applying rigid spacer bars.
Tony Palmer
“With automation, the
quality is far superior
and unit processing is
much faster”
By switching to a fully automated Super Spacer
application line, manufacturers can save tens of
thousands of pounds each year, increasing output
by up to 18% while requiring less than half the
number of operators.
Embracing the future
One IGU manufacturer who has long recognised
the huge potential of automation is our valued
customer Cleartherm – early adopters of the
technology, becoming only the third UK company
to acquire an automated Forel Super Spacer
application line in 2006.
Now the company has invested in a modern
replacement, ensuring they will continue to offer
quality, consistency, and speedy service for years
to come.
“When we first started using Super Spacer,
we applied it by hand,” explained Cleartherm
Managing Director David Laing.
“Then, following a visit to America, we saw an
automated line for the first time. That was a real
‘wow’ moment for us. We had seen the future.
“We knew we had to incorporate automation
technology in what we did – and before long, we’d
acquired only the third automated Super Spacer
line in the UK”.
Sizeable benefits
Seventeen years later, having seen the sizeable
benefits that automation can provide, Cleartherm
made the decision to reinvest.
“With automation, the quality is far superior, unit
processing is much faster, and you can make
considerable savings on labour.
“We were reminded just how much automation
has improved our lives back in December, when
our previous automated line was taken out.
“For the last week of 2022 and the start of 2023,
we had to process all our IGUs manually – every
member of the work force was counting down
the days until the new line was up and running!”
concluded David.
We’re delighted that Cleartherm have decided to
reinvest in Super Spacer automation.
As a thriving IGU manufacturer with a reputation
for quality, technical excellence and innovation,
they’re a perfect example of what automation can
achieve.
PILKINGTON UK INVESTS IN A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Pilkington United Kingdom, part of the NSG Group, is making a multi-million-pound investment in its
Merseyside facilities as part of a government-backed project that will save 15,000 tonnes of carbon
emissions each year, while securing the future of rolled glass manufacturing in the UK.
Under the project, Pilkington UK will move its Watson Street manufacturing operations to its Greengate
site in the town. The move represents a major investment in its Greengate glass furnace, which melts the
raw materials into glass as part of the manufacturing process. The Greengate furnace will be upgraded to
accommodate its continued production of flat glass, while delivering the additional output required from the
relocation of its Watson Street rolled glass manufacturing line. Producing all glass out of the upgraded furnace,
rather than running two, will save carbon emissions equivalent to taking 8,800 cars off the road each year.
The work will begin in August 2023, with the line due to be up and running by August 2024. www.pilkington.com/en-gb/uk
FIT Show 2023
MORE THAN FIT FOR PURPOSE...
The team at Made for Trade explain why the Korniche range of products set it apart from the
competition and the company highlight what will be on show at FIT Show 2023...
As a multi-award-winning company aiming
to provide innovation for resellers and
installers, Made for Trade (MFT) says
it has rapidly become the industry’s go-to for
aluminium bi-fold doors and roof lanterns;
marketed under its Korniche brand.
Seven years on, the brand is now requested by
name alone from consumers and homeowners, but
what is it that sets the product line apart? As the
company looks ahead to meeting customers old
and new at FIT Show 2023, here are four reasons
to come along and find out more at the NEC;
Engineering and product design
Made For Trade’s Korniche brand was founded with
the idea to bring inspirational products to market
via the use of design and precision engineering.
Created as completely bespoke systems from a
clean sheet, the MFT engineering team design
products founded on the three core principles
of Precision, Simplicity and Beauty to offer
uncompromised glazing.
The combination of new technology and engineering
experience means slim sightlines for the consumer
lasting functionality and security.
The award-winning Bi-folding door followed,
underlined by the same principles and whilst
other products may appear to offer some similar
benefits, MFT says it is also the beauty of the
design you can’t see that identifies Korniche and
its approach.
Korniche lanterns, for example, use a selection
of aluminium components such as end caps
and ridge bosses that have been die cast to suit,
enabling greater accuracy and tighter tolerances to
be achieved to the benefit of the structure.
Meticulously engineered to be the strongest
and stiffest on the market, the lantern supports
maximum glass sizes without the need for
additional rafters, and the smart design details
mean that glazing the structure is free of tapes and
sealants, whilst Korniche Bi-folding doors feature a
similar raft of benefits.
The security aspect remains at the forefront of
any Made for Trade product, and with enhanced
protection as standard with Korniche, it is designed
into products from day one.
The doors and their durable frames come rigorously
thanks to low-profile extrusions, along with longtested
to keep homes protected – they are
certified to the advanced PAS24:2016 standard,
whilst the patented clip-in internal glazing bead
is said to be the standard by which all other
systems are judged.
Of course, any benefits are soon lost if quality and
consistency are not ensured for every item, from
order through to installation. This quality includes
the fit, finish and longevity of the product, and this
is secured through the principles and practice of
quality assurance and control for both the product
and service.
Made for Trade recently gained ISO9001
certification, based on continually improving and
optimising all stages of how the company operates,
allowing the company to remain at the forefront of
manufacturing and efficiency in the fenestration
industry. These are just some of the reasons that
Made for Trade was voted by industry peers as the
NFA’s Aluminium Fabricator of the Year.
Impeccable Service
Having satisfied customers around the UK and
expanding – becoming one of Ward Hadaways
‘Fastest 50’ companies in the North East in 2021 –
Made for Trade prides itself on the phone and email
support and service provided to its customers.
Come and meet the team at FIT 2023, and discover
the values of this family enterprise first-hand.
You’ll also have the chance to explore MFT’s
website featuring CGI imagery alongside more
traditional routes of product demonstration,
allowing trade customers keen to get up close
and personal with the products before committing
to orders, or looking to expand their product or
supplier portfolio.
Whilst visitors to the FIT Show will be able to
get hands on with the Korniche product line,
customers also have access to a contemporary
showroom area at the firm’s Wynyard base where
bi-folding doors are on display, and the area is
complete with a Demonstration Build using a
standard sized lantern.
Prospective installers are invited to see for
themselves just how quick and easy lantern
construction and glazing is with the Korniche
system using only basic tools.
Value and extras
Each year, Made for Trade has continued to invest
heavily in its customers and trade partners,
offering all the resources needed to allow them to
maximise sales and profit. The MFT team take care
of nationwide promotion and ensure all the possible
tools are to hand, meaning that customers can get
on with the next step of project supply or fit.
The company’s ‘Brand Toolkit’ offers a one-stop
resource for customers to find everything quickly
in an online directory that adds value and helps
develop sales. To assist with the creation of
websites or social media use, promotional video
content is available alongside trade brochures,
literature and professional images.
The Brand Toolkit is supplemented by the Geo-Tool
feature on the Korniche website, which actively
points consumers towards a registered MFT
partner to complete the transaction.
Homeowners and Project Managers can find their
nearest suppliers and installers with just a couple
of clicks and is free for registered trade customers.
New for 2023, customers can specify a Uni-Blind
system in their Korniche Bi-Folding Doors; offering
an integrated and energy-efficient light control
solution that requires no installation or setup.
This finishing touch, is said to be rapidly gaining in
popularity thanks to being maintenance-free and
energy-efficient.
The Screenline-based blinds use an SL20SV
Sliding Control and are now available as an option
on MFT’s online quotation request forms. These
venetian systems are installed ready to use, whilst
new and improved gaskets alongside the renowned
Korniche ‘SpeedBead’ ensure the blinds are truly a
‘FIT, Glaze and GO’ system.
Customer benefits
The Korniche lantern stands by its ability to be
‘fitted in minutes and glazed in seconds’ owing to
its design.
There are no visible fixings on show and all joints
are seamless. This means perfect aesthetics as
it meets the eye and hints at the ‘clean sheet’
method of construction behind.
The number, grade and size of fasteners, for
example, have been optimised for security and
rigidity compared with typical self-tapping screw
fixings, whilst intricate details such as ridge
bosses use anti-crush tubes for perfect installation
torque to provide a superior, more precise fit than
traditional glazing fittings such as flat plate.
Improving efficiency still further for the customer
is the ‘One-Drop Delivery’ service now offered
by Made for Trade. Having invested in excess of
£400,000 over the last 18 months in its fleet of
delivery vehicles, MFT now not only offer crane
offloading for maximum ease and safety on site,
but is proud to showcase a one-drop service that
includes both the door system and glazing together
on the same truck.
This significant investment allows MFT to offer a
Document L-compliant glazed product at a muchreduced
cost and increased convenience compared
to having the glass delivered by a third party.
Customers can now save up to 20% on glazing as a
result, with the glass delivered direct to site via MFT.
What’s more, the One-Drop delivery saves
downtime on site dealing with deliveries and glass
that could typically arrive a day or two either side
of the door system.
Electric Forklifts
PLUGGING INTO GREENER POWER
Total Fabricator is aware of an increasing number of businesses switching to electric forklifts.
Combilift explains why this is the case and why your business should be doing the same…
It is widely acknowledged that carbon footprint
reduction is beneficial to society, the environment
and our planet.
Switching to electric powered equipment is
therefore something that many companies
are thinking of, but are still unsure about
the consequences of what can be seen as a
major operational change. Materials handling
manufacturer Combilift believes now could be the
time to make the switch.
When Combilift was established 25 years ago,
diesel power was the default choice, as at the
time it was considered the best option to ensure
powerful and reliable performance for most users
and suppliers of industrial vehicles such as
forklift trucks. This was particularly true for heavy
duty and demanding working conditions.
Times have changed however, as have
environmental concerns which have prompted a
shift in public opinion towards what are seen as
greener and more sustainable practices.
This has in turn influenced decision makers across
diverse industry sectors to consider switching from
diesel to electric power – particularly when it’s
time to renew the fleet.
More stringent legislation has of course also played
its part in promoting battery electric vehicles and
equipment. And if companies are bidding
for tenders to supply local authorities or
governmental bodies, they will nowadays
need to prove their credentials when
it comes to the – electric – equipment
they use.
As a manufacturer and an exporter to
85 countries, Combilift has witnessed
the shift to electric power over the past
couple of decades or so, the pace of
which has increased markedly in the
past few years.
Combilift’s CEO and Co-Founder Martin
McVicar explained: “We launched our
first electric C-Series model over 18
years ago, and now more than 60% of
the trucks that come off the production
lines in Monaghan are electric, and we
are planning to launch four new electric
models this year.
“There are some geographical regions that are the
exception to this, but there is no turning the clock
back now.”
Developments and improvements in battery
technology enable ever increasing lift capacities,
longer run times and longer operation per charge.
The fact that electric trucks are now on a par with
diesel powered ones when it comes to performance
has addressed one of the previous major concerns,
and companies that choose electric no longer worry
about compromising on aspects such as productivity.
“Electric trucks are now
on a par with diesel
powered ones when it
comes to performance”
The latest generation is also versatile and can
work indoors and out. This can reduce the overall
number of forklifts required and consequently the
carbon footprint – as well as lowering operational
costs and outlay for insurance, maintenance and
Contract Electric Forklifts Talk
Continued from page 62
“What is good for the
planet can also be good
for your business”
so on. So, what is good for the planet can also be
good for your business.
The legislation introduced in 2022 to make it illegal
to use red-diesel for non-road mobile machinery
was also a catalyst for many companies to make
the switch.
As electric powered trucks do not have traditional
combustion engines or hydraulic transmissions,
there is no longer any need to check and top up
engine fluids or lubricants. This results in longer
intervals between services for further costs benefits.
But it’s not all about money – just as on-street
traffic emissions can cause serious health
problems, people need to be protected from
pollution at their workplace.
The British Safety Council has called for limits
on the amount of exposure to diesel emissions,
and the key benefit of an electric fleet is the
improvement in air quality on site and the
reduction of potential risks to employees, visitors
and customers alike. This becomes even more of
an issue in areas with poor ventilation.
Noise pollution is an underestimated threat to
human health, wildlife and environmental quality,
and more and more companies are aiming to
quieten down their operations by using electric
trucks. For those with premises in residential or
urban areas, keeping noise levels to a minimum
can substantially improve relationships with the
neighbours.
It also enables forklift operation during so-called
unsocial hours, for loading or unloading deliveries
for example.
Employers who operate electric fleets are also
assured of happier drivers – a comment from
an operator of an electric Combilift echoes the
sentiments of many. They said: “It’s smooth and
quiet to drive and there is now more space in
the cab, so when you are working in hot weather,
conditions are much cooler and more comfortable
as there is no heat emanating from the engine.”
“The key benefit of an
electric fleet is the
improvement in air
quality on site”
