centenary of Dimitri Mitropoulos’ birth and presents some of his finest performance of Mahler. The

This is a dress rehearsal, recorded in New York on 1946 and is fascinating to listen to. We hear
Toscanini hushing his singers or enthusiastically cheering them on, shouting “Crescendo” or “Legato” or
simply singing along. He even takes the role of Guiseppe in place of an indisposed singer. The blend of
total emotional involvement and professional detachment is revealing and very moving.

This CD is a selection of operatic ariettes which enjoyed great success in the opera houses of Paris and
Brussels during the second half of the eighteenth century. They were published in the form of
arrangements in which the orchestral accompaniments were replaced by two violins and continuo. It
was the Austrian musician Ignace Vitzthumb who made these reductions.

Henry du Mont was only French by adoption, originally coming from Liège. He was a prolific mid-17 th
century composer and wrote over three hundred compositions, mainly religious. His first collection of
motets was published in 1652. His favourite vocal combination was the duo and half of the pieces in this
collection are these. He exploits other combinations too, such as a top line, bass and upper violin part.

This year the Hagen Quartet celebrates its 30 th anniversary and begins a new collaboration with Myrios
Classics. Three members of the quartet are siblings and the ensemble has developed and retained a
distinctive character. They will be performing at the Wigmore Hall and Queens Hall Edinburgh in March.
