The top gathering for wine
professionals in Asia
As Vinexpo Asia 2023 wound down last week, both
visitors and exhibitors were very positive in their
response to the show, which exceeded everyone’s
expectations
With a highly qualified attendance, substantial business
generation and unequalled knowledge sharing, Vinexpo
Asia solidified its position as the top gathering for industry
professionals in the region.
For this first edition in Singapore,
it was clear that the atmosphere
was one of joy and relief to be
back in Asia, and everyone really
made the most of the opportunity
to be under one roof to renew
existing ties and forge new
business relationships. Rodolphe
Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium
Group, expressed his joy at
Vinexpo Asia’s comeback: “The
positive feedback about this year’s
event in Singapore demonstrated
the immense potential and
significance of the Asian market
for the wine and spirits industry.”
The turnout to Vinexpo Asia 2023
was impressively diverse with
9,989 professionals hailing from
64 countries. 80% of buyers had
trade and retail activities in the
region, introducing exhibitors
to numerous local business
opportunities. 20% of visitors
were from the media or education
and institutional organisations.
Vinexpo Asia 2023’s significance
on an international level
was highlighted by several
prestigious institutional visits,
including Ambassadors and
High Commissioners from 19
countries, notably His Excellency
Mr Jonathan Kaplan, Ambassador
of the USA to Singapore, and
the Ambassador of France to
Singapore, Her Excellency Ms
Minh di Tang.
The USA was Vinexpo Asia 2023’s
Director of Great China and
Southeast Asia for the California
Wine Institute expressed his
enthusiasm following the event:
“Vinexpo Asia has been great for
the exposure of US wines. The
quality of the visitors was truly
amazing. The entire US area has
been busy throughout. We have
made a lot of promising contacts
I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
“We are very happy with the outcome”
Vinexposium CEO Rodolphe Lameyse didn’t hold back his enthusiasm
regarding Vinexpo Asia 2023 in Singapore
After the success of the first edition of Vinexpo Asia in Singapore
and the announcement that in the future Vinexpo Asia would
alternate between Singapore and Hong Kong, The Daily spoke with
Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexposium, about his impressions of
the event and strategies looking forward.
What were your overall impressions of
the show this year and how did it feel to
be back in Asia?
We are very happy with the outcome
of Vinexpo Asia in Singapore. When we
decided a year ago that the comeback
of Vinexpo Asia was going to be in
Singapore, we understandably faced a
lot of questions regarding the size and
the state of the market. For us it was
obvious that we would serve the whole of
Asia from Singapore, as I noticed when
I visited Singapore last year. Questions
about the relevance of Singapore
didn’t last long because everyone
quickly understood that Southeast Asia
represented major potential for the wine
industry. And we are very glad to have
made this event a reality.
This first event in Singapore is the
cement in the strategy we’ve been
rolling out for four years. Covid was a
bit of a showstopper, but this was the
plan from the very beginning: having
the major show in Paris, which is now
really buzzing and making a lot of
noise, being in Asia, and covering both
the Chinese market and the Southeast
Asian market. The Southeast Asian
market was probably underdeveloped
and undercovered in the past. So I am
very happy and excited about the future,
with the potential we have, with the trust
of our exhibitors and partners, which is
very important, and more than happy
with the buyer turnout. Talking to our
clients in the aisles, they were surprised
that they met with Thai, Vietnamese and
Indonesian buyers.
IT IS IMPORTANT
TO MAINTAIN THE
RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN THE
WINEMAKER
AND THE WINE
DRINKER
With the strategy of alternating Vinexpo
Asia in Hong Kong and Singapore every
other year, are you expecting to attract
different clientele from two different
markets?
The opportunities that lie in Hong Kong
and Singapore are different. If you
look at the number of Southeast Asian
buyers we had in 2018, which was the
last Vinexpo show we had in Hong Kong,
compared to the number of trade buyers
we attracted this year, it’s incomparable.
This means there have been a lot of
changes on the market, driven by wine
consumption which is booming in
Southeast Asia. But one size doesn’t fit
all. If you want to reach certain buyers,
you have to be near them. Asia is huge.
So if you are in Singapore, you’ll reach
the Southeast Asian buyers, of course
some will go to Hong Kong next year
and that’s good, but not all of them will.
Like not all of the Chinese buyers came
to Singapore this year. So it’s a good
balance between both, supplemented
with our presence in Korea which will
be another booming event. Ultimately
I think having this event in Singapore
this year and going back to Hong Kong
next year is a no-brainer for most people
and the last brick in the strategy that
we are deploying with the team, making
Vinexposium the strongest partner for
the entire wine and spirits world.
Can you tell us a bit about your
upcoming event in Korea this October
and why it’s a strategic market?
We are very interested in Korea because
if you look at the surveys on wine
consumption around the world, they
are all saying the same thing: things are
flat or slightly decreasing by one or two
percent, the population is ageing, people
are buying online, etc. Korea is different.
It is led by the younger generation, they
are interested in wine, they cannot buy
wine online because you cannot in
Korea. There is a workaround where
you can buy online and it’s delivered in
a place where you have to show your ID
and sign a paper, but it’s not all-inclusive
e-commerce.
In Korea, the older generation of 50 and
over are male, they go out for business
dinners, they have beer and Soju. Younger
people aren’t doing that. They start with
a beer, then they have something else.
They are more interested in wine and are
educated in wine through social media
like the Korean equivalent to TikTok. This
is a young market that’s booming with
double digit growth. This is why we met
with the Korean wine and spirit importer
association. And they asked us to be in
Seoul to organise a business matching
event. They want to meet importers
because they have to fuel this demand
for new products, different qualities of
grapes and different tastes.
How did the Grand Tasting event in
partnership with Bettane+Desseauve
go?
It was a resounding success. We were
expecting close to 600 tasters, and we
more than doubled that attendance,
which demonstrates the benefits of
the association between B&D and
ourselves.
Vinexpo Asia is a B2B-market-focused
company. If I’m a wine producer, I will
discuss with the intermediaries: the
importers, distributors, retailers, etc.
But I won’t speak to the people who are
actually drinking the bottles. I think it is
important to maintain the relationship
between the winemaker and the wine
drinker. And this is a unique opportunity
to kill two birds with one stone
DuePalme’s Corerosa
at Vinexpo Asia 2023
The experience of Roseblood, the
iconic rosé by Estoublon, begins with
its imagery. The wine celebrates the
Garden of Eden and nature through its
symbolism of the snake, both as a sign
of seduction and metamorphosis, and
the rose, a flower that’s both elegant
and strong at the same time. The
