Ace comes up trumps
after 11 days in bush
• By Nathan Morton
A FAMILY dog which ran away
after a horror crash that killed
a young man has been reunited
with its owners.
The border-collie named Ace
had been tracked in the bush by
a search and rescue expert for
several days before he was found
on Tuesday night.
His owner Hailey Palmer
couldn’t believe the news when
she received the phone call
shortly before 10pm. It was a relief
after an 11-day rollercoaster
of emotions.
On the Friday of King’s
Birthday Weekend, Palmer had
been travelling with her partner
Shaydan and 7-month-old baby
Isla through Lewis Pass, near
Hanmer Springs, shortly before
5pm. Palmer was sitting in the
passenger seat looking down
when she heard her partner
exclaim ”what the f*** is he
doing?”
Looking up, a car was headed
right towards them for a headon
collision. Their ute flipped
and ended up upside down on a
roadside railing.
Disoriented, Isla screaming
and blood dripping from her
nose, Palmer recalls hearing
people running towards
the wreck.
“They were screaming ‘there’s
a baby in the back, get her out’,
she was in her car seat and hard
to reach,” Palmer said.
Their ute flipped and
ended up upside down on a
roadside railing.
Her partner, Shaydan was also
okay – she heard him call out to
nearby witnesses “someone stop
that dog”.
Ace had been tied to the back
of the ute, but his collar had a
catch that would release under
pressure. The pet had bolted
after his collar had come free,
and disappeared.
Palmer wasn’t focused on Ace
at that moment, as concern had
turned to the sole occupant of
the other car.
Lawyer
fighting
cancer
takes
$1.2m
claim back
to court
• By Emily Moorhouse
A LAWYER diagnosed with
cancer and given a bleak longterm
prognosis is suing his
insurance company over a $1.2
million payout he didn’t receive
- despite being in remission.
Hugh Roderick Catherwood
claims his insurance company
breached its contract when
declining to pay him the full
$1.2 million in life insurance
after his cancer diagnosis.
However, the company pushed
back, stating he did not qualify
for the payout as treatment
was available that would likely
increase his chances of survival.
The senior Christchurch
lawyer had maintained a life
insurance policy since 1976 and,
in 2009 at the recommendation
of his broker, entered into a life
insurance scheme with Asteron
Life Ltd, the Court of Appeal
heard.
The policy provided a death
benefit to be paid if Catherwood
died and promised to pay if he
became terminally ill.
In 2012, the benefit had
reached more than $1.2 million.
A DISABILITY day service has
launched an online fundraising
campaign in a bid to replace
five wheelchair vans which
have been stolen in the past six
months.
Police say the vans have been
targeted by offenders to use in
burglaries across Christchurch.
Chris Ruth Centre chief
executive Marilyn Paston said
yesterday a
Givealittle page
was being set up
to help replace
the vans, which
can cost up to
$80,000 each. It
was hoped the
fundraiser would
help bridge
the difference
between the
insurance cover and the cost to
replace the vehicles.
One van had been recovered
in Bryndwr and a youth arrested.
Police said it had been
used in burglaries. But the thief
had badly-damaged the ignition
and other parts of the vehicle
when stealing it from the Chris
Ruth Centre in Hoon Hay.
Another stolen van had been
located in Woolston; but before
it could be picked up and taken
back to the centre, it was stolen
again.
Paston said the thefts were
disheartening for the organisation.
It supports 120 people with
disabilities, taking them out on
day trips.
The organisation was now
having to rely on taxis and others
who were helping out.
“People just don’t realise the
impact it has on the people we
support. We really rely on those
vans to get people out to their
activities during the day. It’s just
not okay,” Paston said.
Catherwood
says he
should
have got
full payout
•From page 1
In July 2018, Catherwood’s
wife passed away from breast
cancer, prompting him to have
medical tests, despite feeling
healthy.
To his shock, the tests revealed
a tumour at the top of his
stomach. In January 2019 he
was diagnosed with oesophageal
adenocarcinoma, a type of
stomach cancer.
By the end of the month,
Catherwood was having
problems swallowing and was
told he would likely die in a
year if he didn’t get treatment.
Catherwood began eight weeks
of chemotherapy followed by
surgery in May 2019. He then
had a further eight weeks of
chemotherapy.
He made a claim under his
trauma recovery insurance and
received $564,185.
But Catherwood said he
should have got a full payment
of $1.2 million from Asteron, as
he met the definition of being
terminally ill.
Catherwood took Asteron to
the High Court for breaching the
contract. However, in a judgment
released in December last year,
Justice Rachel Dunningham
ruled in favour of Asteron.
The policy stated an insured
person was “terminally ill” when
“your life expectancy is not
greater than 12 months”.
Catherwood, who is now
cancer free, took his case to
the Court of Appeal claiming
Justice Dunningham failed to
interpret the relevant definition
and wording in Asteron’s life
insurance policy.
On Tuesday at the Court
of Appeal in Christchurch,
Catherwood’s lawyer Henry
Holderness said the words
“regardless of” have “one
ordinary and plain meaning”.
The judges reserved their
decision.
Where in the city can you
• By Nikki Preston
CHRISTCHURCH is proving
to be a hotspot for first-home
buyers who have been snapping
up properties at prices unheard
of in most other cities.
The majority of houses sold
under the hammer in the city’s
auction rooms last week were
in the $500,000s or under price
range. Most were snagged by
first-home buyers eager to finally
get on the property ladder.
Harcourts Gold salesperson
Cameron Bailey said houses in
the $400,000 to $800,000 price
bracket were
usually the first
to move – both
when the market
dropped and now
when it appeared
to be stabilising.
“What I think
Cameron
Bailey
is happening
is there’s an
acceptance of a
new norm. People
can clearly see that prices have
come back from where they were
a year or so ago and now it’s
exciting,” he said.
It was good for buyers because
a property worth $700,000 a
year ago is now probably worth
$600,000, he said.
In some areas a three-bedroom
home can be picked up for
somewhere in the vicinity of
$500,000. A three-bedroom
home in Te Rama Pl, Wainoni,
which has an RV of $480,000, is
going to auction at the end of the
month.
Bailey said while it was still
possible to purchase a property
in the $400,000s, stock in this
price range is scarce.
Last week he sold a modern
one-bedroom, one-bathroom
fully-furnished apartment on
Latimer Square for $442,000
after it was withdrawn and sold
during the auction.
At the same auction, a threebedroom
home on Peverel St
in Riccarton, marketed to both
first-home buyers and families,
sold for $535,000.
The apartment sold to an
investor, but Bailey said the
majority of properties in the
lower price range are being
bought by first-home buyers.
Of the eight properties sold at
Harcourts Grenadier’s auctions
last week, five were priced under
$600,000. A three-bedroom,
DEAL: A threebedroom
home on
Peverel St in
Riccarton,
marketed to
first-home
buyers or
families, sold
for $535,000.
Right - Six
bidders
battled it out
at a mortgagee
auction for this
property on
Masham Rd,
Broomfield.
one-bathroom home on
Chartwell St in Burwood
sold for $470,000 – $120,000
less than its RV. While a
three-bedroom, one-bathroom
home on James K Baxter Pl in
Spreydon sold for $577,500 –
$42,500 under its RV.
There were also six bidders
battling it out at a mortgagee
auction earlier in the week.
The three-bedroom house on
Masham Rd in Broomfield sold
under the hammer for $472,000,
$88,0000 less than its RV of
$560,000.
Ray White Metro sales and
auction manager Richard Withy
said people thinking they were
going to get a “deal or a steal” are
feeling a bit more confident now
interest rates may
have peaked – so
they are back in
the market.
“Some of that
first-home buying
market has
definitely sprung
back into life. Our
mortgage brokers
have definitely
been commenting
. . . that they are seeing those
Richard
Withy
first-home buyers. Rather than
just having pre-approvals in
place, they are actually coming
through in terms of contracts.
Ray White has sold several
properties in Christchurch priced
in the mid-$450,000s to early
$500,000s so far this month,
including a three-bedroom, onebathroom
home on Jebson St,
Mairehau, for $522,000.
And while some first-home
buyers are looking in the lower
existing home price range, Withy
said others are paying between
$700,000 and $800,000 for a
new-build.
Bayleys Canterbury general
manager of sales Rachel Dovey
said there are definitely opportunities
for people to buy properties
in the $500,000 price range
at the moment.
“I don’t feel like it’s been a
surge in that price bracket. There
certainly has been a few and they
do have good interest. Where else
GONE: This three-bedroom, one-bathroom house on
Jebson St, Mairehau, sold for $522,000.
in New Zealand in a city that’s
doing so well and got so much
going on can you buy [for that]?”
Even a bungalow in central
Christchurch with potential to
renovate can be picked up for
$700,000 or $800,000, a price
Dovey said would be unheard of
for a similar character home in
Auckland or Wellington.
Dovey said all signs are pointing
to the market declining and
being at, or near, the bottom.
“We are quietly optimistic. We
don’t want it to take off. I think
it’s fair to go up reasonably, but to
stop going down is a good sign.”
KĀINGA ORA hasn’t decided if
it will go to a meeting called by
residents next week to discuss a
social housing development it is
purchasing in Northwood.
Nearby residents, upset about
being blindsided over a partly
completed over-50s housing
complex in Pentland Estate being
turned into a social housing
complex, have organised the
meeting with Waimakariri MP
Matt Doocey, city councillor
Aaron Keown and community
representatives – but have been
told the social housing provider
may not turn up.
Resident Ann Sanders said she
thought Kāinga Ora was going
to send a representative, then it
declined, she said.
Yesterday, the agency told The
Star it may attend after all.
“We are speaking with the
Belfast Community Network
about the meeting and whether
an appropriate representative
from Kāinga Ora will be able
to attend,” said Kāinga Ora
regional director Liz Krause.
Earlier this month, Kāinga
Ora did another letterbox drop
to the neighbours.
“We hoped to clarify aspects
of the development where we
Liz Krause
Ann Sanders
were aware there was some misinformation
circulating in the
community,” said Krause.
“It’s also worth noting that
we have only heard from one
member of the community, who
had questions about traffic.”
Consent for the 27-home
Kāinga Ora development, next
to the Northwood shopping
centre, was originally given to
a private developer in 2017 for
an older persons’ complex, after
neighbours agreed it could go
ahead.
Last year Kāinga Ora agreed
to purchase the completed
development from builder
Freeman Homes, but didn’t tell
nearby residents until April
when the social housing agency
distributed flyers revealing it
would be social housing for
over-50s and anyone of any age
on a permanent health benefit.
“We weren’t told that when we
agreed to it going ahead,” said
resident Ann Sanders.
She is particularly concerned
about the lack of communication.
“Kāinga Ora considers
the flyers that were dropped
off in April and last week as
community consultation. Is this
acceptable? Is this an example of
community consultation?” she
said.
“We are fielding dozens
of inquiries seeking more
information and asking for a
community meeting. Everyone
is supportive. No one is happy
with the development as it is,”
Sanders said.
Stage one of the complex
is expected to be occupied in
November.
Biggest project yet for developer
• By Tony Simons
PROPERTY developer Williams
Corporation is planning its
biggest housing project to date, a
307-unit complex on the former
Gough, Gough & Hamer site in
Hornby.
The developer has signed up
to buy the 5.7 hectare Amyes
Rd industrial site and plans to
build the units in 78 separate
buildings, alongside 41 storage
units, in what may also be the
biggest brownfields (industrial
land) residential development
undertaken in Christchurch.
“I am not aware of any brownfield
development with more
units,” said city council head of
consents John Higgins.
The property, with a rateable
value over $17m, is occupied by
Terra Cat, formerly the Gough
Group before the business was
sold to Malaysian-based Sime
Darby Berhad in 2019.
The site was then sold
separately to another company,
24 Amyes Road Ltd, before Terra
Cat announced plans to move
to a new site at the Waterloo
Industrial Park in Islington next
year.
Williams Corporation filed
a resource consent application
in September to develop the
site and has registered a caveat
against the title to protect
development in Hornby, bounded by Amyes Rd and
24 Amyes Road Ltd director
Richard Bell declined to comment.
Williams Corporation coowner
Matthew Horncastle also
refused to comment on his plans.
“I do not talk to the media,
sorry,” said Horncastle.
Environmental consultants
have told The Star the consenting
process for the project is likely to
cost at least $100,000, and may
be considerably more by the time
it is completed.
The 1746-page consent
document shows most of the 307
residential units will be one or
two bedrooms. Some will have
garages, but parking will be
limited and a third of the units
will have no off-street parking.
The main access will be off
Amyes Rd with secondary access
off Branston St.
Government social housing
agency Kāinga Ora told The
Star it has not been offered the
development for consideration.
The land will require
earthworks and remediation,
but the consent application
asserts there are no special
circumstances necessitating
public consultation.
The city council said the
application could be non-notified
or notified, which is a decision
yet to be made by a planning
commissioner.
Shift end of era
A move next year by
machinery company
Terra Cat, formerly Gough,
Gough and Hamer, to
a new home in the
Waterloo Industrial Park in
Islington will be the end
of an era.
The family-owned
Gough, Gough & Hamer
was based at the Amyes
Rd site in Hornby for
nearly 50 years.
It was founded 94
years ago by Edgar
Gough, Harry Hamer
and Tracy Gough, to
supply electrical goods,
before becoming one of
New Zealand’s biggest
earthmoving machinery
companies.
In 1932, it secured
the rights to represent
Caterpillar Tractors,
becoming the biggest
Caterpillar business
outside of the United
States just six years later.
The Canterbury branch
of Gough, Gough &
Hamer was officially
opened on the Amyes Rd
site in April 1971, followed
by its general office four
years later.
‘It was amazing he survived that
sort of crash with just bruising’
• From page 1
Shaydan went to check on him
but was pulled back by other
people at the scene. The occupant
of the car, a young man in his
20s had been killed on impact.
“Obviously it was really sad for
his family, heartbreaking stuff,”
said Palmer.
Sent to Christchurch Hospital
for checks, Palmer and her
family suffered no injuries of
concern.
The following day, attention
turned to Ace. Palmer believed
the dog couldn’t have survived
the crash.
“I thought, a 100km head-on
collision, he’s probably run off and
curled up to pass on,” she said.
“(I) figured he’d been thrown
around and had broken ribs or
internal bleeding.”
The couple trekked back on
Sunday night to look for their
pet, leaving food and a jacket
with their scent as bait. Posts
were put up on social media, asking
locals to keep an eye out for
the 3-year-old dog.
The interest captured the attention
of Don Schwass, a search
and rescue expert, who had spent
the past two decades running a
local search operation for dogs
that go missing in the bush.
He came across dashcam footage
that captured Ace running
across the road in front of a car a
day after the crash.
“It’s such a massive area, there
were signs 10km north of the
crash site – so Ace definitely covered
some ground,” said Palmer.
After three days of searching
last week, and two days of
searching after the weekend,
Schwass refused to give up.
He kept locals updated on his
social media page – at one stage
photos of dog droppings were
posted.
The couple also searched on
Tuesday, and then the phone
call: “He said ‘I got him’,” said
Palmer. “I was like ‘you got him?’
and he said ‘yeah, he’s in my
truck’,” said Palmer.
“I was just like ‘rubbish’. I
didn’t even know what to think,
when I drove up there I was still
in absolute shock.”
Cautiously driving to the meetup
point, Palmer got out of her
car and the cameras started rolling
to capture her reuniting with
her lost pup.
“(Ace) was crying with happiness
and giving me lots of
cuddles, being back in my arms
again,” she said.
“He came back from the dead
almost, it was amazing he survived
that sort of crash with just
bruising by the sounds of it.”
He was taken to a vet yesterday
morning and will be monitored
once the adrenaline wears off.
“It’s amazing how much people
have responded to help find
Ace,” said Palmer.
For Schwass, the case was a
reminder of why he does what
he does.
“It’s the joy of tracking and the
reunion with the family. It’s just
like a member of the family – I
think the couple had more of
a shock from the reunion than
from the accident,” he said.
Crash newlyweds and photographer file
lawsuit against helicopter company in US
• By Kurt Bayer
LAWSUIT: Newly married couple Fay El Hanafy and Mahdi Zougub and their wedding
photographer Rachel Jordan have filed a personal injury lawsuit in the US after suffering
severe injuries in a helicopter crash two years ago. PHOTOS: GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
A NEWLY married couple and
their wedding photographer have
filed a personal injury lawsuit
in the US against Robinson
Helicopter Company and several
aircraft parts manufacturers
after suffering severe injuries in a
crash two years ago.
Fay El Hanafy and Mahdi
Zougub had just exchanged vows
and said “I do” in front of their
closest family and friends when
guests watched on in horror as
the helicopter taking the newlyweds
away for a photoshoot
plummeted to the ground.
The young couple, along with
photographer Rachel Jordan,
were badly injured when the R44
helicopter crashed onto Terrace
Downs Resort golf course, 90km
west of Christchurch on June 12,
2021.
Aviation attorneys Timothy A
Loranger and Ari S Friedman, of
the Los Angeles law firm Wisner
Baum, have filed a complaint
in LA County Superior Court
on behalf of the trio, along with
Jordan’s husband, Eric.
The lawsuit seeks damages
against defendants Robinson
Helicopter Co, Avco Corporation/Lycoming
Engines, Weldon
Pump, LLC, and Parker Hannifin
Corporation.
The helicopter that crashed
was a Robinson R44 II model
helicopter containing a Lycoming
IO-540 model engine, a
Parker Hannifin pressure relief
valve, and a Weldon Pump auxiliary
fuel pump.
Robinson is a California corporation
based in Torrance, Avco
(Lycoming is an unincorporated
operating division of Avco) is a
Delaware corporation headquartered
in Texas, and both Weldon
Pump and Parker Hannifin are
Ohio corporations.
Not long into the flight, the
R44 suffered a loss of engine
power suddenly and without
warning.
The helicopter entered a rapid
descent from a low altitude and
landed hard on its skids near the
ninth hole of the golf course at
Terrace Downs Resort.
The helicopter suffered serious
damage, including separation
of the tail boom and tailor rotor
system.
According to the complaint,
the newlyweds each suffered
serious and permanent physical
and psychological injuries as well
as a loss of consortium.
Jordan suffered serious and
permanent physical and psychological
injuries, and her husband
suffered “a loss of consortium”.
“The injuries suffered from the
crash have essentially put an end
to Rachel’s very successful career
as a top professional wedding
photographer in Northland, New
Zealand,” Wisner Baum said.
“Her and her husband’s company,
Two Little Starfish, had
become a household name in the
New Zealand wedding industry.”
The LA law firm cites government
crash data from the
National Transportation Safety
Board that shows Robinson
helicopters have been involved
in more than 1650 incidents and
accidents since 1983. Of those,
411 were fatal. It says the R44,
which is Robinson’s most popular
model, has been involved in
more than 550 incidents and accidents
(187 fatal) over the same
time period.
“Unfortunately, protecting
profit margins is often more
important to manufacturers
than protecting the people that
fly their aircraft,” said Loranger,
who is representing the plaintiffs.
“Robinson helicopters must
do more to identify and resolve
safety issues that all too often
injury or take the lives of pilots
and passengers.”
The lawsuit alleges strict
product liability, breach of warranties,
and negligence against
all defendants.
Wisner Baum has investigated
and handled 20 crashes
involving R22s, R44s or R66s,
representing 34 passengers or
pilots, in wrongful death or
personal injury claims involving
Robinson helicopters.
Battle between right and
left rolls on over cycleway
The Park Tce cycleway
in the central city
has been a battle
between right and leftleaning
city councillors.
Tony Simons looks at
the controversy
THE VOTE to keep a temporary
bike lane along Park Tce was
a victory for Labour and
Green-aligned city councillors
in the ongoing battle over
Christchurch’s cycleways.
The 350m bike lane, which
replaced a vehicle lane on the
north side of Park Tce, is part
of a project to improve cycle
and pedestrian safety while
Canterbury Museum’s multimillion
dollar redevelopment is
completed.
It was built without explicit
approval from city councillors,
under authority delegated to
city council staff. But some city
councillors claim they did not
fully realise what was happening
and say it was done without a
proper consultation process
being followed.
Fendalton Ward city councillor
James Gough made it an issue
when he, supported by other
right-leaning city councillors,
tried last week to get it ripped
out, but the move failed after The
People’s Choice and Green city
councillors voted to keep it.
The cycleway trial plan was
presented to city councillors at
their March meeting – so they all
knew about it before it went in.
It was part of an agenda item:
“Parking Changes on Gloucester
St & Hereford St”. But city
councillors were not asked to
vote on it because the cycleway
was considered operational, a
temporary traffic management
plan which staff had discretion
to approve.
Part of that report said: “It is
proposed to install the works
initially . . . in April 2023 prior
CONFLICT: City councillor James Gough tried to get the temporary Park Tce cycleway ripped out, but the move failed after
10 city councillors, including Yani Johanson (right), voted to keep it.
to the closure of the shared
path at the museum. Once the
temporary works are in place
a report will go to the council
in mid-2023 to seek approval
and confirm resolutions for the
remaining period of the museum
works, which is approximately
five years.”
A number of city councillors
later claimed they did not
understand the cycleway was
definitely going ahead and took
issue with the process.
Even The People’s Choice city
councillor Yani Johanson, who
voted for the cycleway to remain,
said he could have asked more
questions at the March meeting.
“We got memos and we
got the report and I probably
misinterpreted what was going
on. The staff made us aware,
but there was stuff in there
that wasn’t very explicit,” the
Linwood Ward councillor said.
“I do believe there was some
degree of confusion, but I don’t
think that is the fault of staff,
they clearly indicated it. I didn’t
process clearly what was written,
but that is on me.
“Fundamentally, now that
[the cycleway] is there it seemed
the right thing to do to wait for
the trial, even though I am not
convinced of the design or the
need, compared with widening
the existing shared pathway,”
Johanson said.
Hornby Ward city councillor
Mark Peters chose to abstain
from the vote.
“While I don’t agree with
what was done, I couldn’t see
any sense at all in pulling [the
cycleway] out.
“My friends around the table
put some pressure on to support
the motion, but I couldn’t in
HOW THEY VOTED
•Councillors who voted to remove the cycleway: James
Gough, Sam MacDonald, Kelly Barber, Aaron Keown,
Victoria Henstock, Phil Mauger (mayor).
•Councillors who voted to keep it: Tyrone Fields, Jake
McLellan, Pauline Cotter, Yani Johanson, Tyla
Harrison-Hunt, Melanie Coker (The People’s Choice);
Sara Templeton, Andrei Moore, Celeste Donovan and
Tim Scandrett.
•Abstained: Mark Peters.
good conscience. I read the room
and my vote couldn’t have made
any difference anyway,” said
Peters.
After the cycleway was
installed, Waimairi Ward city
councillor Sam MacDonald
asked for a review of the decision-making
powers delegated
to council staff. The motion was
lost by one vote.
“It’s a loss for transparency,
democracy and community consultation,”
said MacDonald.
Said Gough: “I am not in any
way anti-cycleways, but I wanted
it removed because it had never
been approved. I think it is clear
these [staff] delegations are not
working.”
Mayor Phil Mauger even
accused city council staff of
“running amok” and said they
needed “to be reined in” over the
issue.
Former mayor Garry Moore,
who helped Mauger’s rival David
Meates run for the mayoralty in
the October local body elections,
took issue with the accusations.
“It is demeaning of elected reps
to attack council staff who cannot
defend themselves,” he said.
Mauger later said he had an
extremely bad day when he made
those comments.
“They were meant to refer to
the council system and not calling
out one person over another.
oN sAle Now!
I would never ever do that,” he
said.
In the end, Gough’s motion to
rip the cycleway out was lost by
10 votes to six.
MacDonald’s motion to review
staff delegations was lost by nine
votes to eight.
“The debate around this wasn’t
the council’s finest day in the
sun,” said Mauger.
“It has reinforced for me that I
need to have a different approach
when dealing with staff over
these types of issues.”
Meanwhile, an online survey,
designed to gather residents’
views on the cycleway, closed
on Sunday. The results, along
with traffic count data and
other information, will go to the
Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central
Community Board before going
to the full city council for a final
decision on the cycleway’s future.
Said city council transport
head Lynette Ellis: “That report
will include feedback from
the survey findings . . . and
will be made public when the
community board agenda goes
live.”
MacDonald is predicting the
cycleway will stay.
“Given they [council staff] put
in hard infrastructure without
consultation, it would seem
unlikely that decision will be
reversed,” he said.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Convicted sexual predator
maintains innocence
• By Emily Moorhouse
A MAN found guilty of sexually
assaulting a young girl for three
years maintains he’s innocent
and stood in the dock shaking
his head as his victim described
the ongoing effects of his abuse.
Blair Hunt, 55, appeared in
the district court on Monday
for sentencing with his arms
crossed, often sighing as the
judge outlined his offending.
Even after a jury found him
guilty of 11 charges of sexual
connection with a young person
and five of indecent assault
against a young person, he didn’t
accept the verdict, and nor did
his supporters who filled a large
space in the public gallery.
Hunt’s victim and a couple of
her supporters sat at the other
end of the gallery, watching as
he was imprisoned for three
years and two months.
The victim said Hunt destroyed
her concept of love as he
would often tell her he loved and
she began to believe his actions
were normal, in a statement read
to the court by Crown Prosecutor
Grace Collet.
It wasn’t until the victim was
in a health class when the teacher
began discussing consent that
things slowly started clicking
into place.
The offending spanned from
2016 to 2019 and involved Hunt
touching the victim, who was
under 16, inappropriately on
multiple occasions.
The victim said Hunt would
assault her every chance he got
and would often wait until the
This report was produced
by Open Justice – Te Pātītī,
a Public Interest Journalism
initiative funded by NZ on Air
pair were alone.
Hunt’s lawyer Kerryn Beaton
KC said her client did not accept
the jury’s verdict and asked the
judge to take his health into
consideration while imposing a
sentence, as diabetes can be difficult
to manage in prison.
However, Judge Kevin Phillips
rejected the idea of Hunt’s good
character, stating he lost this
when the offending first began
and continued over three years.
Assault charge
withdrawn after
man’s death
• By Sam Sherwood
POLICE HAVE withdrawn an
assault charge against a man after
the death of Rangi Ned Kingi at
a Bryndwr property four months
ago.
Kingi, 43, was found dead at
an address on Eden Pl, Bryndwr,
on February 4. Another man had
suffered serious injuries when
emergency services arrived at the
home and was taken to hospital.
Police later charged a 53-yearold
man, who was injured, with
assault. The man has name suppression.
In the district court on Tuesday,
Crown prosecutor Kerry
White sought leave to withdraw
the assault charge, which Judge
Tony Couch granted.
The man’s appearance was
excused.
Police said emergency services
were called to the address on
Eden Pl about 6.20pm on February
4.
Kingi’s oldest child, Luther
Anderson-Kingi, earlier told the
NZ Herald his father was “hardworking,
loving, caring”.
Luther Anderson-Kingi (left)
with his father Rangi Kingi.
Kingi loved his son’s partner’s
children like they were his own
grandchildren, he said.
“He had a good soul, he had a
good heart.”
Anderson-Kingi said the family
was “confused” and waiting
for answers.
“We’re not coping because
we don’t have answers, we don’t
know what happened.
“The whole family is up in the
air. We just want to know what
happened to dad.”
Thursday June 15 2023 The Star 15
Thank you to our community
patrollers
Community patrols are an important
partner to the police and a valuable asset
to our neighbours. The first Canterbury
patrol was set up in 1994 and there are
currently 15 patrols supporting our streets.
These patrols pre-dated the national
CPNZ body, which was established in
2002 and in June of 2019 they celebrated
their 25 year anniversary helping
Christchurch feel safer.
The police and patrols share the same
goal: Safer communities together. The
patrols work closely with the police as
their additional eyes and ears. The key
role of patrols is to observe, record and
report, including taking note of the little
things that may be out of place or not
quite right that might form part of a
bigger picture for the police.
Patrols assist in big and small emergency
situations and community events
to provide support to the police or
organisers.
Christchurch Patrols also work with
the City Council reporting issues such
as graffiti and rubbish so that they can
be dealt with promptly.
A big thank you to all of our
patrollers who are volunteers
between the ages of 20 to over 80,
who share a commitment to give
back to their community. They all
believe that by doing what they can
they make the community a better,
safer place: at a time when many
within the community are feeling
stressed and pressured.
Thank you to the dozens of
volunteers who give of their time
who help to give peace and comfort
to keep our streets safe. We salute
you.
BACK TO THE FUTURE: A reader has proposed reinstating passenger rail
to Lyttelton for cruise ship passengers, to ease overcrowding on the
No. 28 bus.
Why not put on
a train for cruise
ship passengers?
I CAN’T understand all the commotion
about cruise ship passengers needing
buses (The Star, June 8). Why not use the
infrastructure that is there?
The rail is still used occasionally
for other purposes – why not put on a
passenger train? A few carriages would
cater effectively for transport to and from
the city, without all the worry of causing
inconvenience for residents or trying to
find extra bus drivers.
In fact, this would be a convenient
service on a regular basis and would cut
down the need to restrict cars when there
are events happening in Lyttelton.
- Cherrie McGlashan
Sydenham
Park Tce cycleway
I used to ride the shared path past the
museum every day and now use it on
weekends.
Most people move to one side when I
ring my bell; most people are reasonable.
There have been many times that people
won’t keep left, dogs are not under control,
children dart in front of me.
I have been verbally abused, forced to
go on the grass, hit by oncomers as they
refused to move to their side, and recently
(through Hagley Park when the T-Ball
games were held on Saturday mornings)
been strangled by a parent when I stopped
to hear what he said to me.
About 50 people watched – and did
nothing as I was crying out – when this
person had his hands around my throat
squeezing.
I now use the new cycle lane, and it
takes the stress out of that particular area.
- Hamish Craig, Latimer Square
Greens tax policy
So now the Greens want to tax us twice.
Once when we earn the money and again
if you buy some assets.
The cost of valuing everyone’s assets
would well exceed what would be
collected. Assets include property,
furniture, cars, paintings, antiques,
vintage cars, boats, caravans, bank cash,
private company shares, public company
shares, business investments, private
loans, gold and many more.
I could see a lot of money going out
of the country. Increasing the tax rate
on income over $180,000 to 45 per cent
is totally misleading. Add in GST,
fuel and road tax and other indirect
taxes the real rate is about 60 per
cent. Why bother to work? A 60 per
cent tax rate destroyed socialist
Sweden.
- Alan Roberts, West Melton
I AM FEELING deflated and
disappointed by the lack of Government
foresight and investment in flood
protection for our region.
As the regional council in New Zealand’s
largest region, it feels like we are
being neglected when it comes to futureproofing
Canterbury. I know others feel
the same.
That’s not to say support isn’t needed
for areas badly impacted by Cyclone
Gabrielle – we received considerable support
during the earthquake recovery, so
we know the response up north is critical
– however, to not invest in protection of
other at-risk areas in Waitaha is shortsighted.
Flooding is the number one natural
disaster in New Zealand and, with the
impacts of climate change becoming
more significant and frequent, we are at
risk here in Canterbury.
Along with other regional councils,
Environment Canterbury made a joint
submission to the Government asking for
co-investment in a major flood protection
programme. Our proposal was for
central and local governments to coinvest
$257 million over the next three
years, to fund 92 urgent flood protection
projects across Aotearoa.
Thursday June 15 2023 The Star
We have been asking central
Government to co-invest with us in
flood prevention measures and river
management since 1989, however it
has been ratepayers across the country
footing the bill.
The recent devastation of Cyclone
Gabrielle could happen anywhere in the
South Island, and we shouldn’t wait for
that to happen before taking action. Prevention
is still better than a cure.
We thought we had a strong case for
funding in the 2023 Budget, especially
given what’s at risk if there is significant
flooding along our 78,000 kilometres
of river systems. That includes national
assets such as Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency roads, KiwiRail bridges that run
near rivers, power and internet infrastructure
– which would all be impacted,
and disrupt our supply chains in the
event of another major flood event.
And that doesn’t factor in our ongoing
ability to live in some areas, or people’s
ability to get insurance or how events
might impact on premiums – a sad
reality that some families in the badly
affected areas in the North Island are
grappling with.
I am hoping this decision by the
Government isn’t final. I will be working
over the coming days and weeks with my
regional colleagues around the country
to make sure our concerns are heard
in Wellington.
GARDENING
Of the $240 million worth of seed and grain exported by New Zealand growers
annually, almost 90 per cent is Mid Canterbury bred. The seed and grain industry is
nothing short of big business.
Why a city focus on food, fibre
and agritech?
Feeding
the world
and fueling
innovation
Carrfields is a pioneering Canterbury-based
agribusiness that is part of this. Their forty plusyear
history includes five traditional divisions such
as livestock, machinery, agricultural contracting
and seeds.
Their reach extended further with their investment
in NZ Natural Fibres, a company that supplies
premium wool yarn systems for high-end
residential, retail carpets and private jets. Over the
last few years, NZ Natural Fibres partnered with
Hemp NZ to produce sustainable products from
natural hemp fibres. They are now on a mission
to be leaders in this growth industry by providing
premium products with a reduced carbon
footprint. With a growing global population and
the ongoing impacts of climate change, the call
for smart agritech solutions is more important than
ever before. And it’s not all meat, dairy and wool.
Carrfields is an example of a business in the Food,
Fibre and Agritech Cluster, one of four sectors
identified by ChristchurchNZ as driving growth and
future innovation.
Innovative Ōtautahi-based companies that are transforming the food, fibre and agritech sector
Leaft Foods exists to reduce the environmental
impact of food production. They are separating
a protein called Rubisco which is the most
abundant protein on the planet and responsible for
photosynthesis, and using it to develop a range of
foods that people love.
This is a strategic intervention to fuel
innovations in big data, artificial intelligence,
robotics, automation, the Internet of Things,
plant-based proteins, nutraceuticals, high
value ingredients and materials. Investment
to grow the sector includes startup business
development programmes such as the current
Food, Fibre and Agritech Challenge where
finalists go through an eight-week validator
to develop their idea into a viable business.
Delivered by the University of Canterbury’s
Centre for Entrepreneurship, the 10 finalists will
pitch their ideas to a live audience at Aotearoa’s
biggest primary sector conference, E Tipu
IFAMA 2023 being held at the Christchurch
Town Hall from 17-20 June.
From sustainable farming solutions to cuttingedge
drone technology, these ideas will have
a positive impact on the future of Aotearoa
and the world. And just like Carrfields, it is
innovations like these that are set to transform
the industry.
A world-leading biotechnology company,
Keraplast recover bioactive keratin proteins from
regeneratively farmed New Zealand wool and
blend these together to create unique, branded
ingredients that are used in the world’s leading
beauty and personal care products.
Canterbury is New Zealand’s
largest and consistently highperforming
agricultural region
producing one-fifth of the nation’s
agricultural GDP and employing
nearly 20,000 people.
The region’s competitive
advantages include: our
temperate climate, fertile soils and
water access and are leveraged
by a logistical hub of world-class
manufacturers, technology and
professional services. Education
pathways play a part as well with
Lincoln University boasting one
of the largest concentrations of
land-based researchers in the
Southern Hemisphere, while the
University of Canterbury produces
world-class engineering and
software talent.
Founded in 1961, Aroma NZ manufactures
premium New Zealand origin Green-lipped mussel
extracts which are used in leading joint-care
brands world-wide for people and pet. Grown
sustainably, Aroma export in bulk to world-leading
nutraceutical companies all over the world.
PHOTO: Carrfields, NZ Hemp and NZ Yarn are
developing cropping innovations for highly
efficient use of the whole hemp plant. Natural
fibres like hemp and wool could one day
produce materials for products from Formula 1
race cars to America’s Cup boats.
What started as Kōrure mussel oil supplements
for natural health care benefits, the company has
expanded to develop a unique manufacturing
technique with University of Canterbury to
extract more efficiently and sustainably aiming to
lead the charge on extraction technology.
Bambax is a sustainable food packaging technology
company that innovates biotechnology enabling
Woodfibre to enter extended shelf life territory.
This results in fibre packaging with high barrier
properties replacing conventional plastics, reducing
reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing biodiversity.
FoodSouth’s purpose-built product development
facility provides scale-up support for food
and beverage businesses. They offer advice,
expertise, equipment, and connections
needed to grow and succeed domestically and
internationally.

Give
volunteers a big
Shout-Out
This June we want to give a Big Shout-out to the volunteers in
our community.
“Volunteers are vital to our communities, and everyone
who gives their time to help their neighbour, school, marae or
community organisation deserves a big shout-out,” says Michelle
Kitney, Chief Executive of Volunteering New Zealand.
Volunteers are first responders in emergencies, clean-up our
beaches and restore wild places, provide baking and meals for
those in need, and support people who are having a hard time.
More than one million people across Aotearoa volunteer for an
organisation, contributing $4 billion to the economy. Much more
happens within communities and informally between people. In
fact, about 50% of all adults in New Zealand volunteer, and in
some communities, such as Pasifika peoples, it’s as high as 97%.
“During the challenges of the last three years, volunteering
has been vital to the wellbeing of people in Aotearoa. Many
community organisations have had much greater demand for
their services.
“Now it is time to shine a light on our unsung heroes, and we
need your help to say thank you,” Michelle says.
The Big Shout-out encourages everyone to thank a volunteer
they know – to give them a shout-out on social media or shout
them morning tea.
Supporting
Volunteering
While increasingly wellknown for its volunteer recruitment
platform which enables its nearly 300 member organisations
– not for profits across Otautahi – to advertise volunteer roles
within their organisations, Volunteering Canterbury recognises
that the experience of volunteering should be one which is
worthwhile to all parties. For that to happen, it is important
that volunteers’ motivation to volunteer is taken into account.
For example, a large number of people are currently utilising
volunteering to gain transferrable skills to eventually take into
a new work place, or to enhance their opportunities to rejoin
a workforce. Recognising that, Volunteering Canterbury
offers a full programme of volunteer management support to
community organisations covering topics such as health and
safety, privacy, reimbursement, through to a series of information
and knowledge ‘bites’ on all things governance. Throughout the
year, also, more comprehensive workshops are on offer providing
tools so that, as one example, organisations can evaluate their
operations and role as well as better tell the story of their impact
in the community.
As part of its volunteer celebrations for 2023, a tree planting
event has been organised as a Family Volunteer Day at Styx
3.30pm. A great chance to get out and make a difference in the
community with friends and families.
Thanks to all
Hagley Adult Literacy Centre (HALC) is
delighted to acknowledge and thank our
60 plus amazing active volunteers. Jason,
one of our awesome volunteers, is being
recognised this year for his commitment
to our tutors and students. Jason travels
around the city to assist at four of our
classes each week, he goes the extra mile
to assist the learners and the tutors. Jason
mostly volunteers as a tutor assistant in
our literacy and numeracy classes. ESOL
and literacy and numeracy classes are held
all over the city and our volunteers travel
there to contribute their time, energy,
skills and patience to help both tutors
and learners. Everyone at HALC is very
grateful and appreciative of the wonderful
work our dedicated volunteers do. Our
classes are most certainly enhanced by
their support and commitment.
together
Presbyterian Support would not be able
to continue its work without the valuable
and vital contribution of volunteers. Last
year 200 volunteers gave over 18,500 hours
of their time to help care for vulnerable
children, youth, families and older people.
Volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and
nationalities provide support to the Family
Works mentoring programme and Enliven
programmes for older people.
Sarah Campbell has been a volunteer
mentor with Presbyterian Support
since December 2021. Sarah says the
benefits of mentoring are numerous
and she particularly enjoys seeing the
child’s progress, especially their positive
behavioural changes.
“Volunteers make a huge commitment
to our organisation and the people we care
for,” says Barry Helem, Chief Executive
Officer for Presbyterian Support Upper
South Island. “Our programmes rely on
their generosity and willingness to help
others. We’re very grateful to them.”
Victim
Support,
here for you
Every year, thousands of New
Zealanders are affected by crime, trauma,
and suicide. Victim Support operates
nationwide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
and we’re here to make sure they’re well
supported.
This might involve listening to someone
dealing with the shock of a crime or
sudden trauma, assisting a bereaved family
with the coronial or funeral process,
supporting a person or family through a
trial, ensuring victims get any financial
assistance they’re eligible for, making
referrals to other support services.
Victim Support volunteers come from all
walks of life, just like those who need our
help. They make an incredible difference
for victims, providing much-needed
information and support through times of
crisis and beyond. They don’t have to be a
qualified counsellor or social worker to get
involved – they just need to be a patient,
good listener with the empathy and
resilience to help others under pressure.
We thank all our amazing volunteers
for their mahi. We couldn’t do what we do
without you.
Ever known someone
who’s had your back no
matter what? That go-to
person who supports
you through ups and
downs, and guides you to
better things? A mentor
who provides a sense of
belonging and connection?
Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Christchurch have over
130 volunteer mentors
matched with young
people from disadvantaged
backgrounds. Our mentors
provide friendships and
empower tamariki and
rangatahi; fostering their
confidence, self-esteem
and resilience so they can
experience a more positive
future.
The unifying quality our
mentors have is that they
want to make a difference
for a young person. They
understand the importance
of having one extra person who believes in
you, a champion always in your corner. It’s
no wonder many of our matches become
By tackling a young
person’s need for support at
an early stage, BBBS brings
wider benefits to the whole
community by developing
healthy, happy, productive,
confident youth who can
go on to make great
contributions to their
community, including
mentoring others. Research
also shows mentoring
reduces the likelihood of
offending, addiction, and
domestic violence, as well
as improving students’
educational achievement,
mental well-being and physical
health.
At BBBS, we rely solely
on the generosity of our
volunteer mentors and the
community we serve to
support with mentoring
where it’s most needed. We
can’t do what we do, without every single
one of our generous, caring, kind, amazing
volunteers – and for that we thank them
wholeheartedly.
To our volunteers ... thanks!
Every life fully
lived at Hōhepa
Sabine Grey became a volunteer because
she wanted to make a positive impact on
her community. As a former student of
neighbouring Cashmere High School,
she was familiar with Hōhepa’s vibrant
community of people with intellectual
disabilities.
Sabine started volunteering with our
Friday Music Group, where she played the
clarinet and shared her passion for music.
Sabine tells us that she loved seeing how
much everyone enjoyed singing and
dancing along to their favourite songs.
When a new job meant she couldn’t
continue with the music group, Sabine
chose to visit Debbie at Hōhepa’s Kaiwara
house on Wednesday nights instead. They
have a great time going for walks, doing
puzzles and working on crafting projects
together. During this one-to-one time,
they’ve developed a close relationship
and Sabine looks forward to chatting with
Debbie each week. Recently they attended
Hōhepa’s annual Variety Show held at
Sabine’s old school, Cashmere High. They
had an amazing time together and loved
seeing all the hidden talents of the people
at Hōhepa.
Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu
All Hōhepa volunteers have big hearts
and want to give back to their community,
but it’s often surprising how personally
rewarding volunteering can be. Sabine’s
friendship has made a positive difference
to Debbie’s life, but also her own. She’s
learnt new skills and gained a deeper
understanding of how Hōhepa supports
people with intellectual disabilities.
This Volunteer Week we want to share a
heartfelt thank you to Sabine and all our
amazing volunteers. Your dedication is
instrumental in our kaupapa of every life
NZ Blood Service says a huge thank you
to our wonderful volunteers who help to
look after our donors once they have given
blood and plasma. Their commitment
and generosity ensure the donors are well
cared for post-donation.
We have approximately 30 volunteers
who help us out at the Chch Donor Centre
(based at Lester Lane off Deans Ave).
Throughout Canterbury, we have over 65
volunteers who look after the refreshments
for the donors at the mobile blood drives.
We greatly appreciate the support of
all of our volunteers but for National
Volunteer Week we would like to put the
spotlight on Lyn Bell.
After her retirement from support
services at Chch Public Hospital, Lyn
started working as a volunteer for NZBS
and has been with us for over three years.
Lyn works three shifts each month at
the donor centre and local mobile blood
drives.
Lyn says that becoming a volunteer for
NZBS was an easy transition because she
has been a donor for over 20 years (with
300+ donations under her belt).
And she says that it’s a great place to
volunteer because everyone is happy to be
here and, as a donor and a volunteer, you
know that you’re helping someone in need.
Thank you and aroha
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Thursday June 15 2023 The Star 25
Do you know Glucosamine
has numerous health benefits
other than just joint health?
Many know of glucosamine
sulphates amazing benefits
for joint and connective
tissue health and support.
Glucosamine is a compound
that occurs naturally in your
body and is present in the
cartilage of your joints as
well as in your skin, bones,
nails and ligaments. Taking
glucosamine in sufficient
amounts provides the body
with more building blocks
to help maintain and repair
all your joints, ligaments,
tendons, connective tissue,
bones, and nails as well as
supporting healthy skin, hair,
blood vessels and more. As we
age the body’s production of glucosamine
declines and this is a reason why
supplementation may be beneficial. Studies
have found in athletes’ glucosamine
may protect joint tissue by preventing
the breakdown of cartilage. One study
demonstrated that supplementation with
1500mg to 3000mg of glucosamine daily
for three months significantly decreased
cartilage breakdown in college soccer
players as well as professional rugby
players. A comprehensive review of
multiple studies on glucosamine sulphates
(GS) benefits for osteoarthritis was
published in a peer-review medical journal
“Therapeutic Advances in Musculoskeletal
Disease” in December 2020. The review
found that a daily dosage
of 1500mg of “GS” can
positively affect the cartilage
structure, reduce pain, and
improve joint function, and
also glucose metabolism in
people with osteoarthritis.
Glucosamine has many
other surprising health
benefits. Animal studies
show it can extend lifespan
by around 10%. Several large
human studies have shown
glucosamine supplementation
to significantly improve
cardiovascular health and
reduce mortality.
Glucosamine has been
shown to reduce Age-related
inflammation now considered a leading
cause of aging and mortality. Glucosamine
has also been shown to protect your DNA
against damage, improve cellular health,
create more mitochondria and improve
energy levels.
We love them for that.
Do You Know GLUCOSAMINE
Offers Far More Benefits
Than Just
Joint Health?
Glucosamine sulphate (GS) occurs naturally in the
body. It is used in the formation of bones, nails,
ligaments, tendons, connective tissue & cartilage
– the material in all moving joints that protects and
allows them to move freely. Stiff, painful & swollen
joints are a sign of insufficient or damaged cartilage
(osteoarthritis). As we age the body’s production
of (GS) may decline & this is likely the main reason
for developing joint problems. A comprehensive
review of studies on (GS) benefits for osteoarthritis
suggests that a daily dose of 1500mg (GS) can
positively affect the cartilage structure, reduce pain
& inflammation as well as improve joint function.
(GS) appears to have many other surprising health
benefits. Animal studies show it can extend lifespan
by around 10%. Several large human studies
have shown (GS) supplementation to significantly
improve cardiovascular health & reduce mortality.
Also, it has been shown to protect DNA against
damage, improve cellular health by creating more
mitochondria as well as improve energy levels.
Sydenham bulldoze way into top
As the Metro Premier
Defending champions
Sydenham have burst into
Seventh-placed Sydenham
take on Linwood following their
first win since May 13 when they
handed top-of-the-table University
their only loss.
Head coach Ben Rhodes said
the Christchurch game was a
“big” win for the side off the back
of two losses.
“Our focus was being consistent
across what we did, and the
challenge was being able to do
that for 80 minutes,” he said.
The team scored an impressive
12 tries, but Rhodes said keeping
Christchurch to zero was the
most “pleasing” aspect.
Sydenham take on Linwood on
Saturday, who sit fourth following
a 45-14 win over Shirley.
With 10 teams in the hunt for
eight playoff spots, Rhodes said
a focus for Sydenham will be
trying to maintain momentum
in the remaining round robin
games.
“By focusing week by week and
winning games, we’ll be controlling
our own destiny,” he said.
“We just need to execute our
University, in round 9, losing
the shield against Burnside
on Saturday.
Burnside handed Belfast
their first win of the year after
a poor first half. Belfast’s 24-7
win will no doubt give the team
confidence for their game against
High School Old Boys.
Following a hefty 7-1 loss to
Nelson Suburbs, Selwyn United
will look to regroup during their
rest week.
NETBALL
The eight sides fighting for premier
netball’s Trust Bank Trophy
will remain unchanged when the
championship round begins on
Tuesday.
Kia Toa A and Technical A
were too strong for Kia Toa B
and St Nicholas A in promotionrelegation
matches this week,
meaning the seventh and eighthplaced
teams in the competition
round will stay in premier 1.
Little separated the two Kia
Toa sides after the first quarter,
with Kia Toa A leading 14-10.
But the luxury of a larger bench
meant Kia Toa A were able
to pull away from the B side,
marching to a 53-34 win.
Meanwhile, Technical A were
far too good for St Nicholas
A, who finished second after
the first round of premier 2. A
dominant 18-3 third quarter
from Technical set up the team’s
57-27 win.
While the remaining premier
sides take a well-earned break
from competition this week, Lincoln
University A have travelled
to Australia to play teams based
in the Melbourne area. The
defending premier 1 champions
lost to Boroondara 59-45 on
Monday then beat University of
Melbourne 52-34 on Tuesday.
Draws for premier 1 games on
Tuesday are expected to be confirmed
by CNC tomorrow.
HOCKEY
It will be another weekend of
defending the Challenge Shield
for both Carlton Redcliffs teams
after nothing could separate
Carlton and Marist when the
four premier sides clashed in
round 7.
Carlton’s women’s team take
on Avon on Saturday following
their 3-3 draw against Marist in
last week’s top-of-the-table clash.
Avon have not played since
their 3-0 loss to HSOB/Burnside,
and are yet to back up their 3-0
win over Southern on May 13.
Marist play the winless
Southern side following the draw
against Carlton.
Hornby take on Harewood
after their narrow 1-0 loss to
HSOB/Burnside in round 7,
while HSOB/Burnside have a
bye.
In the men’s competition,
HSOB/Burnside sit second following
Marist and Carlton’s 2-2
draw last weekend.
HSOB/Burnside recorded a
4-2 win over Hornby and face
University on Saturday .
University managed a 4-4
draw against Avon in round 7
to gain their first points of the
year. Avon will play for the Challenge
Shield against Carlton on
Saturday.
Harewood and Hornby play
each other after losses in round
7. Southern will be in search of
their third win of the season
against Marist.
RUGBY LEAGUE
The Linwood Keas will look
to back up their first win in
three rounds when they host the
Eastern Eagles on Saturday in
round 11.
A strong first half was key to
the Keas first win since their
44-10 victory over the Northern
Bulldogs on May 13. After leading
the Riccarton Knights 14-4
at the break, Linwood were able
to hold on for a 22-16 win.
The Eagles will be confident
following a large win over the
high-flying Halswell Hornets.
The Eagles put a stop to the
Hornets recent good form with a
dominant second half to win 22-
10 after an even first period (6-6).
Halswell take on the secondplaced
Hornby Panthers who
beat the Bulldogs 38-8 at the
weekend. The Bulldogs will
need to be more crafty on attack
against the Knights, following a
scoreless second half against the
Panthers.
Jamieson, who has recently
been battling a back injury,
Eagle on ninth drives
teen golfer to victory
• By Neville Idour
JUNIOR GOLFER Cooper
Moore decisively won the senior
champion of champions event at
Pegasus.
The Waitikiri player, who
turned 15 last Wednesday, made
no race of it against the 24 Canterbury
senior club champions.
Playing with eventual second
placed gross scorer Sam Purdon
from Templeton, Moore was
always a step ahead.
Following a birdie on seven,
Moore (right) used a driver on
the 9th fairway from 225m and
the sensational shot left him a
two foot putt for an eagle to be
-4 at the turn. It is rare to see
even the world’s very best professionals
use a driver from the
fairway.
Another fine birdie from four
feet after a wonderful approach
shot on 10 stretched his lead.
However, Moore’s putter went
cold for a period and a couple or
bogeys on 11 and 12 halted his
progress. Then a couple of solid
saves from several feet on 13 and
14 got him back on track.
A wonderful drive on the par
4 awkward 15th left him just
5m from the green and a birdie
resulted. Nice pars on 16 and 17,
then two cracking shots on the
long par 5 finishing hole to just
a few feet from the green, led to
a closing birdie. Moore’s 67 was
four shots clear of Purdon’s 71.
Sam McGill, Aaron Neill and
Kerry Branson were tied for
third with 73.
Other individual winners were
Desmond Gong (Templeton) in
the intermediate and Cameron
Bartlett (Russley) in the junior.
Moore has now left for Japan
to play in the under-19 Toyota
Junior World Cup and has some
major events to target when
he returns. The New Zealand
under-16 champs in Timaru,
Charles Tour events in Tauranga
and at Clearwater, the Waikato
champs, plus the New Zealand
boys inter provincials and the
New Zealand amateur champs
in Hamilton are on his calendar.
Meanwhile, Canterbury professional
golfer Amelia Garvey
made a huge step towards gaining
her card for the LPGA Tour
with her best finish on the US
Epson Tour. Her three round
score of 207 was good enough
for second and US$18,695 in
welcome prize money.
With her most consistent performance
to date, Garvey began
the final round tied with eventual
winner Siyun Lu, who led
by two shots after nine holes. But
Garvey fought hard and drew
level after a birdie on the 15th
hole. But Lu birdied the 17th to
seal a one shot victory.
Garvey will take great heart
as her form has been on a steady
upward spiral over the last three
tournaments, plus she won the
US Open qualifier. In the race
for the LPGA Tour card, she is
now 19th after 10 events, needing
to finish in the top 25 at the
end of the season to join Lydia
Ko at the highest level.
We’re
strengthening
Orion is installing a new 66kV underground power
cable on Ensors Road, between MacKenzie Avenue
and Sullivan Avenue, as part of a major project we are
undertaking in Christchurch city to replace old cables.
We will have traffic management in place as we are
laying these cables. There may be traffic delays from
Monday 19 June until the end of August. These are essential
upgrades to the network, to enhance the resilience and
security of the network. Please allow extra time for your
Building blocks to
a new home
As Cantabrians continue to move forward, when building a new
home, here’s a reminder to pay attention to some of the fine
details...
Anyone intending to build a new home
should have the builder’s contract
checked out by an experienced lawyer.
A payment schedule can also
minimise financial risks. Issues that
you may have to deal with include:
the deposit, guarantees and warranties
If you want to compare building
companies, it’s important to get down
to finer details such as how many
power points there are per room, the
type of windows you are having or
which paint finishes are included.
Questions to ask
builders include:
• Do you have a completion guarantee
and how does it work?
• Is there a loss of deposit
guarantee?
• Is the company a
Registered Master Builder
and does it use thirdparty
written guarantees?
• What is the schedule for
payments?
throughout Christchurch
• How are the deposit and
progress payments
administered?
• Are they held in a solicitor’s trust
fund?
• Will the master franchisor complete
the build if the franchisee goes out
of business
• What are the exact specs?
• Are the prices fixed?
• What is excluded from the build?
• Are there any restrictions on
driveways or any other connections?
• Can you speak with clients who
have just completed a build?
Do your homework before you decide
on a building company and you will
have a less stressful time once the
building process starts.
‘You miss all the
shots you don’t take’
WHEN THREE friends found
ou they’d been awarded the
same full-fee scholarship to
study at university, they called
everyone they knew to share the
news.
Now they’re heading back
to their old school to tell other
students why they should apply
for Canterbury University Te
Kakau a Māui scholarships.
Caoimhe Hungerford, Leonie
Jansen van Rensburg and
Izzy Froom, all 18, went from
Haeata Community Campus to
study at UC.
Moving from a familiar
school to the busy Ilam campus
has been a big step, but they’ve
had support from each other
and from the Te Kakau a Māui
scholarship programme, which
UC created to boost equity and
mark its 150th anniversary year.
The trio have been close
friends for the pas three years
Big drop
in graffiti
across
the city
THE AMOUNT of graffiti being
removed from structures across
the city has dropped significantly.
From March to May, city
council contractors removed
15,000m 2 of graffiti, compared to
the same period last year when
21,000m 2 had to be cleaned off.
City council graffiti team
leader Kerryn Findlater said the
reduction may
be due to several
factors, including
a collaborative
approach to
preventing graffiti,
the increasing
presence of street
art in the city and
a new volunteering
programme.
Kerryn
Findlater
and were thrilled to find out last
year their scholarship applications
had been successful.
(left), Leonie Jansen van Rensburg and Izzy Froom are returning to Haeata
Community Campus to spread the word about UC’s Te Kakau a Māui scholarships.
fantastic to discover they’d all
been accepted.
The scholarship has meant
she only has two part-time jobs,
editing videos, but I’m not sure
yet specifically what I wan to
do when I finish my degree.”
“I wan to le them know
that it’s like that saying: ‘You
“We have introduced the idea of
micro-volunteering, which gives
those who are reporting a chance
to be rewarded each month.
“It was developed after we
noticed that more than 60 per
firs to ge the news, texting her
friends: “Girls, it’s happened!
Check your emails.”
Hungerford, who is a firstyear
Bachelor of Digital Screen
with Honours student, said
they’d been worried that one of
including teaching dance to
children – withou the scholarship,
she would have needed to
work more.
“My mum is on her own as a
solo parent. Having the scholarship
means it’s much less stress
Froom, Jansen van Rensburg
and Hungerford are excited
about returning to Haeata this
week, on a UC-organised visit
to talk to senior students and
encourage them to apply.
“It’s cool because we can
miss all the shots that you don’t
take’.”
Jansen van Rensburg , a
keen netball player who is
studying towards a Bachelor
of Sport Coaching, said
students considering applying
cent of all graffiti reports came in
via our existing network of 150
volunteers; we wanted to increase
that activity and involve more of
our citizens.”
Findlater said by joining the
friend of the graffiti programme,
them might miss out, so it was
on my family,” Hungerford said.
“I really enjoy making and
show people tha there are other
opportunities ou there,”
Hungerford said.
shouldn’t be put off by doubts
abou their academic ability
(although University Entrance
people become “micro-volunteers”
Eyebrows were raised at the Rangiora
Showgrounds when a duck waddled off
with the top prize.
Chief Judge Ian Selby says the real
question was ‘‘why not a duck’’?
This was the first time the Champion
Bird in Show award has gone to a duck
in the history of the New Zealand
National Poultry Show.
‘‘I only had six birds to judge. They
were the best in their breeds here, and
so I was looking for anything wrong
with them.’’
He says every one of them were good
birds, but Willow, the Silver Appleyard
Duck, was the one with the least
number of faults.
‘‘The duck's body and stance were
good, and it had a great temperament,
so it was worth putting the duck up for
the champion in the show.’’
Willows's temperament extends to
cuddles and kisses, said owner and
breeder Caroline Falkingham of
Darfield.
She says winning was an accident.
‘‘A couple of years ago I put one male
duck, with one female duck, and out
popped a very special Appleyard.’’
Three generations later, Caroline
says her very special Appleyard, has
climbed to the top and somehow beaten
out all the chickens at the show.
‘‘I’m very surprised she won. She has
won at other shows, but to have a duck
come out and win at the national show
is something very amazing.’’
The president of the North
Canterbury Poultry and Pigeon Club,
Gary Donald, says hosting the national
show was a long time coming.
‘‘We applied to hold it four years ago.
‘‘It runs on alternate years between
the North and South Islands, and in
Rangiora we had over 1400 in nine
categories from all over the country
competing.’’
The categories included light and
heavy breeds, fancy bantams, pigeons,
ducks and game fowl.
Serena O’Brien of Twizel has been
exhibiting for 17 years, starting when
she was four.
She loves her bantams and finds
competing a lot of fun. ‘‘It’s my own
Lyttelton into the central city.
It has led Environment
Canterbury, which operates the
it is likely to cost ratepayers a
minimum of $500,000 more next
cruise ship season with passenger
numbers increasing by 30 per
The warning comes as the city
council grapples with its planned
general rates rise of 7.88 per
cent, up from the 5.68 per cent
projected in March. It is hoped
cost cutting will get the increase
down to just over 6 per cent when
the rates are set later this month.
Cruise ship passengers
swamped public buses in Lyttelton
and on the return trip from the
central city during the summer,
angering other bus users who
couldn’t get seats.
ECan reacted to the outcry by
putting on more buses to meet the
driver shortages.
$500,000 in extra spending.
It will mean households will pay
Waimakariri District Mayor Dan Gordon is
running for the role of President of Local
Government New Zealand (LGNZ).
He says standing for the role had not been on
his ‘‘horizon’’, but a growing number had
encouraged him to consider standing due to the
‘‘leadership I had taken on Three Waters’’.
LGNZ is the leadership group for local
government and provides advocacy and support
for local councils.
It is the lobby group for local government to
central government and provides professional
development and consultancy services for
councils.
‘‘ In recent years LGNZ has lost its way
especially with regards to Three Waters, this has
been witnessed with a number of councils like
Auckland and Kaipara deciding to leave and a
number of others considering similar action.
‘‘I made the decision to stand as you can either
sit on the sidelines or do something about it. A
key priority for me is to ensure that LGNZ
represents its membership and concentrates on
advocating for councils and their communities,’’
says Mr Gordon.
‘‘My record shows that I am prepared to stand
up for the things that matter.’’
Mr Gordon helped set up Communities 4
Local Democracy, a Three Waters advocacy
group born out of frustration that LGNZ signed
an agreement with the Government affecting
‘‘our ability to engage and shape Three Waters
Reform’’.
‘‘It did this without obtaining a mandate from
members. This must never happen again.’’
‘‘I am a candidate for change. I want to build
strong relationships across the political
spectrum and work hard to reunite the sector.
LGNZ needs to regain trust and show that we
can make a difference.
‘‘Strong local government and local
democracy are hugely important for the success
of every council and community. We have seen
through Three Waters and other reform
processes recently that the local voice is not
being heard. Local Government needs to work
and lobby for all communities.’’
Third time lucky
book editor from her Heathcote
Valley home, Rogers said the
award feels strange.
“The thing about editing is that
no one sees the work,” she said.
“It’s a back-room job. It feels
quite strange to be out of the backroom.”
As the author of more than 10
books, Rogers is most proud of
writing, With Them Through
Hell, which was shortlisted in the
2019 Ockham New Zealand Book
Awards. •Turn to page 4
