Eagle on ninth drives
teen golfer to victory
• By Neville Idour
JUNIOR GOLFER Cooper
Moore decisively won the senior
champion of champions event at
Pegasus.
The Waitikiri player, who
turned 15 last Wednesday, made
no race of it against the 24 Canterbury
senior club champions.
Playing with eventual second
placed gross scorer Sam Purdon
from Templeton, Moore was
always a step ahead.
Following a birdie on seven,
Moore (right) used a driver on
the 9th fairway from 225m and
the sensational shot left him a
two foot putt for an eagle to be
-4 at the turn. It is rare to see
even the world’s very best professionals
use a driver from the
fairway.
Another fine birdie from four
feet after a wonderful approach
shot on 10 stretched his lead.
However, Moore’s putter went
cold for a period and a couple or
bogeys on 11 and 12 halted his
progress. Then a couple of solid
saves from several feet on 13 and
14 got him back on track.
A wonderful drive on the par
4 awkward 15th left him just
5m from the green and a birdie
resulted. Nice pars on 16 and 17,
then two cracking shots on the
long par 5 finishing hole to just
a few feet from the green, led to
a closing birdie. Moore’s 67 was
four shots clear of Purdon’s 71.
Sam McGill, Aaron Neill and
Kerry Branson were tied for
third with 73.
Other individual winners were
Desmond Gong (Templeton) in
the intermediate and Cameron
Bartlett (Russley) in the junior.
Moore has now left for Japan
to play in the under-19 Toyota
Junior World Cup and has some
major events to target when
he returns. The New Zealand
under-16 champs in Timaru,
Charles Tour events in Tauranga
and at Clearwater, the Waikato
champs, plus the New Zealand
boys inter provincials and the
New Zealand amateur champs
in Hamilton are on his calendar.
Meanwhile, Canterbury professional
golfer Amelia Garvey
made a huge step towards gaining
her card for the LPGA Tour
with her best finish on the US
Epson Tour. Her three round
score of 207 was good enough
for second and US$18,695 in
welcome prize money.
With her most consistent performance
to date, Garvey began
the final round tied with eventual
winner Siyun Lu, who led
by two shots after nine holes. But
Garvey fought hard and drew
level after a birdie on the 15th
hole. But Lu birdied the 17th to
seal a one shot victory.
Garvey will take great heart
as her form has been on a steady
upward spiral over the last three
tournaments, plus she won the
US Open qualifier. In the race
for the LPGA Tour card, she is
now 19th after 10 events, needing
to finish in the top 25 at the
end of the season to join Lydia
Ko at the highest level.
our electricity
network
Orion is installing a new 66kV underground power
cable on Ensors Road, between MacKenzie Avenue
and Sullivan Avenue, as part of a major project we are
undertaking in Christchurch city to replace old cables.
We will have traffic management in place as we are
laying these cables. There may be traffic delays from
Monday 19 June until the end of August. These are essential
upgrades to the network, to enhance the resilience and
security of the network. Please allow extra time for your
journey and follow all signage and instructions from our
