Around the Electorate<br />
Family fun at Willowbank<br />
We are so lucky to have such an amazing asset on our doorsteps in<br />
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. It’s a place that features regularly on my<br />
family’s activity list, particularly in the school holidays, so it was fun<br />
to take my parents and children along for the day recently for three<br />
generations of Sunday family fun. It’s incredible to be able to walk<br />
through so many of New Zealand’s native plant species, viewing native<br />
animals from kunekune pigs to kiwis, so close to home. It is well worth a<br />
visit for locals as well as tourists, to remind us how fortunate we are to<br />
have such a special environment.<br />
Honouring our veterans<br />
Each year it is a privilege to be invited to speak at our local Anzac Day<br />
services across the electorate. It’s important for me to lay a wreath and<br />
pay my respects to all those men and women who sacrificed so much<br />
for the peace and freedom we all enjoy today. Anzac Day is a time for us<br />
to reflect on the effects of a war which touched the lives of every New<br />
Zealand family. I could not imagine what it must have been like for the<br />
parents from this area farewelling their children as they left for war. We<br />
will remember them.<br />
Investing in our Future<br />
We are living longer into our retirement, and we therefore need to<br />
future-proof our housing options so it was good to host National’s<br />
seniors spokesperson Ian McKelvie in the electorate recently. We had a<br />
great discussion with CEO of Ryman Healthcare NZ when we visited the<br />
new Rymans development site at Northwood. What is so impressive is<br />
the level of hospital care facilities that are being incorporated into these<br />
big retirement villages, at no cost to the Government of the day. It’s a<br />
huge investment in our senior citizens and I feel confident that places<br />
like the new Rymans will be a real asset to their neighbourhoods.<br />
