Wednesday July 5 2023 Selwyn Times NEWS 19 Plan to open roller skating rink • By Susan Sandys BROADFIELD roller skater Alana Caunter plans to establish an indoor rink as the sport grows in popularity. The 27-year-old former roller skating champion is scouting out commercial warehouses for lease along the fringes of Christchurch. She was pursuing the project by herself as a business venture. She was hoping to secure investors and open the facility within five years. Caunter said the last rink in Canterbury closed more than 10 years ago. But roller skating is now increasing in popularity, with recent appearances in popular culture, such as the movie Barbie, performances by singer Usher, and a music Alana Caunter video by Pink, raising its profile among young people. In February, Caunter established the Waitaha Artistic Roller Skating Club, which has grown rapidly from two to 13 members aged between nine and 18. She coaches young skaters at the club’s weekly training sessions at the Lincoln Event Centre and Avon Hub Richmond. Caunter said leasing a commercial warehouse could cost more than $200,000 a year. This would be paid for by individual clubs subleasing the facility, as well as from events such as discos and public sessions. She expected it would also cost up to $200,000 to fit the building out as a roller skating rink, and would be seeking investors. The club is focussed on the upcoming nationals. Caunter said members Sam Hayes and Emma Fawthorpe, both 18, will head of to compete at the national championships in Auckland next Tuesday. Caunter said the younger members look up to the pair who are both studying at Canterbury University. Boys’ Brigade milestone Boys’ Brigade Lincoln leaders (from left) Grant Taylor, Regan Morris, McKenzie Seaton- Payne, Alistair Morris, Ryan Sumner, Brett Robinson and Bryn Robinson marked the 140th anniversary of BB New Zealand in Christchurch. Founded by Sir William Smith in Scotland in 1883, the brigade was introduced to New Zealand three years later. It provides weekly adventures and challenges through the ICONZ programme. Alistair Morris said the Lincoln brigade has seen a resurgence and now has 25 members aged seven to 18. He said the anniversary was the latest event in what was turning out to be a busy year. Lincoln members attended a weekend camp at Waipara and now two of its senior members – Seaton-Payne and Josia Anderson – are gearing up for the national leadership development course at Lake Rotoiti next month. Caunter herself competed in the sport until she was 18. She represented New Zealand at the Oceania championships in 2010 and 2011. Artistic roller skating has disciplines similar to ice figure skating, with moves in time to music. “It’s a very creative sport.
