Comeback
spoils Lincoln
lead in first
XI football
• By Jaime Cunningham
IT WAS a case of would’ve,
could’ve and should’ve when
Lincoln High’s first XI blew a 2-1
halftime lead against Connetics
schools premier competition
leaders Shirley Boys’ High.
Lincoln were kept scoreless in
the second half by the unbeaten
Shirley side, who came back to
score four unanswered goals and
claim a 5-2 win last week.
There were moments of brilliance
from the Lincoln side, but
Shirley’s energy and momentum
in the second half was unstoppable.
Finlay Cotton scored Lincoln’s
first goal from a penalty before
Isaak McTurk found the net with a
rebound shot late in the first half.
Due to the school holidays
Lincoln’s next game is on July 19.
They could climb into the top four
with a win over Cashmere High,
who are one point above sixthplaced
Lincoln.
In the girls’ competition,
Lincoln managed a 1-1 draw
against second-placed Cashmere
High. With five wins already in
the bag this season, Lincoln are in
third going into the last round.
They play table leaders St
Andrew’s College on July 26 with
the Challenge Shield up for grabs.
• By Jaime Cunningham
IT WAS a tough return to
Lincoln High for Selwyn
Schools, who suffered their sixth
consecutive loss, this time to
Marlborough Boys’ College 24-12
on Saturday.
In their first home game at
Lincoln High this season, Selwyn
were unable to gain momentum
throughout the 70 minutes. The
team are yet to back up their
first round win over St Andrew’s
College on May 13 and currently
sit ninth on the Miles Toyota
Premiership standings.
However, it was a special day
for prop Louis Ridgen, who
started at loosehead in his cap
game for the team.
Selwyn will return to Lincoln
High when they take on St Bede’s
College on July 15 following the
school holiday break.
Last year’s beaten finalists
sit fifth after a 20-10 loss to
Christchurch Boys’ High on
Saturday.
It will be Selwyn’s final home
game in the round robin stages
before they travel to Timaru for
their last match of the regular
season against Timaru Boys’
High the following weekend.
‘Not our
weekend’
says driver
• By Daniel Alvey
DESPITE A promising start to
the weekend, motor racing driver
Jacob Douglas has not had the
results he would have wanted.
The Lincoln driver was back on
track at the Mid Ohio Sports Car
Course in the United States for the
next round of the USF2000 series.
Douglas (right)
finished 6th and
3rd in Friday’s
practice, but only
managed a best
of 6th place in the
weekend’s three
races.
In race one he had a DNF after
crashing while passing Elliot
Cox and colliding with the back
of Pabst racing teammate Max
Garcia.
In race three he finished 15th,
two laps down on the leader, following
a mechanical failure.
“Not our weekend,” Douglas
said on social media.
Douglas is now 11th in the
championship standings.
This marked the second
weekend with Pabst Racing after
a mid-season team switch last
month to the championship-winning
team.
Douglas now has his eyes on the
next round for the street race in
Toronto on July 14 -16.
