Displaced refugees from around the world closer to resettlement State Department news is a small victory for Iraqi refugees BY JENNIFER T. KORAIL In another step forward in uniting displaced refugees from all over the world with their families in the United States, Christian Iraqis are being recognized as persecuted religious minorities in a report by the United States Department of State, U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “This is a result of the determination and dedication of the Chaldean Federation of America,” said CFA Chairman Michael George. “The ACC [Arab Chaldean Council] has also been big supporters of this issue. They have been volunteering with us, assisting the CFA with processing the applications.” ACC will also set up a Non-Government Organization (NGO) in Jordan to help Iraqi refugees. Chaldeans have been immigrating to the United States for decades. Much of the Chaldean population today is comprised of second and third generations. Yet it is difficult to find a Chaldean who is not affected somehow by a family member in the process of emigrating from Iraq or another country abroad. Unfortunately, the immigration process has been growing increasingly difficult, especially since the most recent war in Iraq. Many Chaldeans continue to fear for their lives in the Middle East amidst violence and persecution. However, Chaldean Americans are taking initiative on the matter. The Committee on Immigration and Refugees was formed this past May 2006 to aid in alleviating the concerns and pains of Chaldean immigrants hoping to settle in the U.S. COMMUNITY EFFORT Led by George, CFA Executive Director Joseph Kassab and Honorary Chairman Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim, the committee is made up of a number of humanitarian and professional Chaldean American organizations. Committee members have spent as much as three decades volunteering for the benefit of Chaldeans. Kassab, a nanobiotechnologies expert, has chosen to take six months off from his work to help spearhead the initiative. “This issue is in my heart,” Kassab said passionately. “It has been a truly noble effort by the volunteers.” The committee meets on a bi-monthly basis to discuss and explore ways of assisting the indigenous people of Iraq who fled the ancestral land due to religious and ethnic persecution and to the inability of the Iraqi government to protect them. Volunteers include doctors, students, professors and lawyers. “If we don’t help our own people, who will?” asked George, explaining why the refugee issue has become the primary focus of the CFA. “It is our obligation to help the Iraqi people from our historical ancestry and fellow members of the Chaldean community.” According to Kassab, tens of thousands of REFUGEES continued 50 32 CHALDEAN NEWS OCTOBER 2006
