CHAPTER 2
Of the Subjects of Baptism
When the Lord rose from the dead, he
appeared repeatedly to his disciples during the
course of forty days, speaking to them of the
things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
Before he ascended up on high, he delivered to
his eleven apostles their commission in these
words: “All power is given unto me in heaven
and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost;
teaching them to observe all things whatsoever
I have commanded you: and lo I am with you
alway, even unto the end of the world,”
Matt. 28:18. 20.
There are two words in this commission
which are both rendered teach. The former is
μαθητευσατε literally make disciples. Men can be
made disciples of Jesus only by hearing and
believing the gospel. In this manner, therefore,
they were to make disciples from all nations.
